If you were a kid or teen in the 2000s, it's likely that you watched at least one movie featuring Josh Hutcherson, and it's also likely that you had a favorite movie with him in it. Hutcherson began acting in the early 2000s and had minor roles in a variety of TV shows before making his film debut in 2003's "American Splendor." From there, Hutcherson was launched into stardom and starred in a number of popular films throughout the decade, including "Kicking & Screaming," "Zathura: A Space Adventure," and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." By the 2010s, Hutcherson took on more mature roles and arguably landed his most popular role as Peeta Mellark in "The Hunger Games," which he would reprise for the remaining three movies in the beloved film series.

Sundance, like most of life, is all about who you know. If you don’t know people—and, more to the point, the right people—it can be a maddening experience. Luckily, we know some of the right people, so our snowglobe bubble isn’t as lonely as it might otherwise be. Jan. 20 involved screenings of “Emanuel and the Truth about Fishes” (look for our interview with star Kaya Scodelario soon) and the Daniel-Radcliffe-having-gay-sex movie “Kill Your Darlings,” which is much more interesting, jazzy, and smart than that joke logline would indicate. But screenings and interviews are only part of the working journalist’s job—there are also parties to attend. And, you know, things like picking up press credentials, trying not to get lost, and eating. In the interest of total disclosure, we have so far only succeeded at one of those three things. We did manage to snag...

The Berlin International Film Festival, also called the Berlinale, is one of the world’s leading film festivals and most reputable media events. 2012 marks the first year Sound On Sight was present to attend. Merle has been posting her recaps while the rest of us have been paying close attention to the films receiving the most buzz.
Founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978. With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly-attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, but only a select twenty compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. This year the Italian film Caesar Must Die took home the Berlin International Film Festival’s top honour as best film. Berlinale is, on the whole, a quieter festival than your really “big” outings — Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, even Nyff or Venice — but my interest is nevertheless piqued by this year’s winners, a list which comes to us from IndieWIRE. The top prize, that being the Golden Bear, went to Paolo and Vittorio Taviani (pictured above) for Caesar Must Die, their “documentary about criminals performing Shakespeare.” Adopt Films will be giving that a United States release later this year; reviews make me think it’s worth some of this early hype, thankfully.
Otherwise Bence Fliegauf‘s Just the Wind was bestowed with a Silver Bear for the Grand Jury Prize, while Barbara brought home a Silver Bear, Best Director for Christian Petzold. As with the main victors, the rest of the selections are far more devoid of “names” (and could more easily be considered esoteric) than any of the winners you...

As we roll into Berlin where War Witch (aka Rebelle) (Isa: Films Distribution) by Kim Nguyen is in Competition. While it’s Kim’s 4th feature, this is the first of his films to have a world premiere at an international festival. This is exceptional as well because the last time the Canadians had a Canadian director in Competition at the Berlinale was in 1999 with Emporte-Moi ! Guy Madden’s Keyhole holds a Berlinale Special slot. Guy is Canada’s cultural ambassador in Berlin and a regular at the Festival and sat on the Berlinale’s Official Jury last year – with Isabella Rossellini.
Sheldon Larry’s Leave It on the Floor (Isa: Arrow) is a U.S.-Canadian Co-pro which has played Laff, Tiff and is now in the Panorama.
Films in the Forum include Green Laser by another Berlinale favorite, John Greyson. Green Laser is his 8th film at the festival. His first was Urinal in 1989. Denis Côté’s Bestiary, straight from Sundance, and Francine, the first narrative feature by Melanie Shatzky (Canada) and Brian M. Cassidy (U.S.) the team that directed Patron Saints (Tiff 2011, Rotterdam 2012) are are all in the Forum.
4 films are in the Forum Expanded:
Chris Kennedy’s 349 (For Sol LeWitt)(1min long!) in Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
American Colour, Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
Road Movie by Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzkystarring Melissa Leo (Frozen River) Tiff 2011 Future Projections: Schedule, a 6-channel installation produced by The National Film Board of Canada. Elle Flanders’ documentary Zero Degrees of Separation was screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Festival in 2005.
The Tiny Ventriloquist by Steve Reinke, (with contribution from James Richards). The installation will be presented at the McLuhan Salon of the Canadian Embassy
In Berlinale Shorts Competition, The Man That Got Away by Trevor Anderson is his second film in this section (2009 The Island). His doc short The High Leve Bridge was in Sundance in 2010.
All we have to do now is wait to see which prizes go to them! Last year Canadian productions came away with three.
Perspective Canada will present 16 titles at the Market:
Café de Flore - Jean-Marc Vallée, Films Distribution, France
China Heavyweight (Straight from Sundance) - doc - Yung Chang Cat & Docs, France & EyeSteelFilms

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

There aren’t too many outlets that review short films. At Moving Pictures we have a tradition known as “The Short List,” short reviews of short films we’ve seen that we think are worth a look.

The 49th annual Ann Arbor Film Festival is an epic celebration of experimental media that runs for six days on March 22-27. There’s so much great stuff screening this year, it makes one wonder what they’ll have left for their 50th anniversary next year!
A couple of the highlights include the highly anticipated feature-length documentary The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye by Marie Losier, which chronicles the pandrogynous love story between industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and his late wife. The film already made a big splash at the Berlinale earlier in the year and looks to be a major hit on the festival circuit this year.
Also not to be missed is a special retrospective of one of this year’s festival jury members, Vanessa Renwick, a longtime favorite on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film. Renwick will screen 10 of her quirky and artistic documentary portraits,...

By Trevor Anderson (writer-director of “The High Level Bridge”)
When I really think about it, I guess I’m going to Sundance because I lost a contest.
“The High Level Bridge” is my ninth short film. It’s a five-minute, personal documentary about the largest bridge in my hometown: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The best way for me to describe the movie to people who haven’t seen it is to tell them the first lines of my voiceover: “This is the High Level Bridge. It’s where people who live in Edmonton go when we’re finally ready to kill ourselves. By the end of this little video, I’m gonna huck this camera over the edge.”
When I’m talking to the press, it’s tempting to pretend that the only reason I made the documentary was to memorialize our dead. But when I’m honest with myself, I...

Yet another movie set joins the long list of recent productions to have their security breached by determined "spy" photographers. The latest is the Hawaiian set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to the 2008 family-friendly hit movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. Very loosely based on Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island, the script for Journey 2 had to be reworked to feature Josh Hutcherson's character, Sean Anderson, after Journey star Brendan Fraser declined to reprise the role of Prof. Trevor Anderson. The large set of new pics include a few shots of Hutcherson, but they primarily focus on newcomer Vanessa Hudgens, who can be seen running in distress, lounging in the sand, and *gasp* using a port-o-potty. Dwayne Johnson, Luis Guzman, Kristen Davis and two-time Academy Award-winner Sir Michael Caine also star.

Dwayne Johnson is to star in the follow-up to 2008 fantasy remake Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The first film - helmed by Eric Brevig - saw Professor Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser) and his nephew Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) descend to a prehistoric subterranean world, but neither Brevig nor Fraser are returning for the sequel.
Brevig is busy finishing work on a Yogi Bear movie, while Fraser had scheduling conflicts (he's filming a murder thriller called This Side of the Looking Glass) that prevented him reprising his role.
Instead, former wrestler Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will step on board to play the boyfriend of Sean's mother, reports HeatVision.
The new film, to be directed by Brad Peyton, is to be called Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and sees the pair go on a voyage to find Sean's missing grandfather.

Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson, formerly Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and before that just "The Rock" (soon to be known as "Johnson", then just "J", then "Wayne 'The J' Donson"), is going to be visiting an island where more than his name has evolved: The Mysterious Island!
Heatvision reports that after pesky scheduling conflicts kept Brendan Fraser from reprising his role of volcanologist Trevor Anderson in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, executives at New Line began courting his muscle-laden Mummy Returns co-star, Mr. The Johnson. After protracted negotiations, the Scorpion King himself is about to come onboard.
Currently titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island and to be helmed in 3-D by Cats & Dogs 2's Brad Peyton, the film is loosely based on Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island which was in itself a sequel to his own 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Johnson will play the...

I have been sort of behind reporting on the all the tinsel town casting news from the past week. So I am dumping it all in this week’s Casting Couch article. First off, on the heels of the Piranha 3D acclaim, Shark Night 3D is casting away its film. The Rock is lining up another kids’ film, Rami Malik will joing the Twilight frenzy, and other actors you know and perhaps love are lining up projects as well.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is going to embark on an unforgettable adventure. According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the former wrestler is in negotiations to star in "Journey to the Mysterious Island", which will be the follow-up to "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D", with a deal expected to close within this week.
Lead actor Brendan Fraser had a big role in drawing moviegoers to watch the first film, but he will not return to the sequel reportedly because he and New Line Cinema could not agree on start dates. Johnson, however, will not take over the role of Prof. Trevor Anderson that is ditched by Fraser.
In fact, the 38-year-old hunk is going to portray the boyfriend of Sean Anderson's mother, who is forced by the young boy "to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather." Josh Hutcherson...
