Do you remember the very first moment when you realized a movie could be far more than just a brief, amiable diversion from the temporal slog of life as an extant human? That first moment you realized film could be art capable of providing a fully nourishing spiritual experience? That perhaps even made you want to become a filmmaker in order to provide that experience to someone else? Just as important: Do you recall the most recent movie that gave you that same feeling or fit of inspiration? Well, in this week’s Survey Says that’s just what we asked: What’s the first movie you saw that you considered a masterpiece… and the most recent?

A Real Pain starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin has landed at Searchlight Pictures, with a theatrical release planned for this year. The deal is for worldwide.
The film stars Eisenberg and Culkin (fresh of his win at the Emmys for the final season of Succession) as cousins who travel to their grandmother’s native Poland to partake in a Holocaust tour. Jennifer Grey and Will Sharpe also star.
A Real Pain, which screened in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival, marked Eisenberg’s second time behind the camera on a feature and earned a standing ovation during its premiere screening. It has quickly become the go-to movie to see thus far.
“It requires emotional acuity and generosity of spirit for a filmmaker to mine painful history while providing subtle access pathways for audiences from entirely different backgrounds to find their way in. Acknowledging the universality of his underlying themes,...

Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” one of the buzziest movies to premiere so far at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, has sold to Searchlight in a huge $10 million deal.
Given the warm reception in Park City, the film sparked an all-night bidding war among several distributions to land global rights, with the deal closing early Sunday morning.
Eisenberg directed “A Real Pain” in addition to starring alongside Kieran Culkin. They play cousins whose tour through Poland in honor of their grandmother sparks some serious family rivalry. Their co-stars include Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Kurt Egyiawan, Liza Sadovy and Daniel Oreskes.
“A Real Pain” is one of two movies that Eisenberg is headlining at this year’s festival — the other is Bleecker Street’s wacky comedy “Sasquatch Sunset.” The actor says “A Real Pain” is an acutely personal story. In the film, the cousins end up joining a Holocaust tour,...

In the film, Emmy and two-time Golden Globe Award Nominee Chrissy Metz (“This is Us”) plays Michelle, a loving and well-meaning mother of two whose struggle with prescription drug addiction is adversely affecting her entire family. Prolific indie producer Jennifer Westin has three low-budget features being released in 2014, including "The Big Ask," "Mutual Friends" and "Dead Within." Below, in a guest post for Indiewire, Westin provides advice for aspiring and first-time producers working on a micro-budget feature. 10 Tips for Successfully Producing a Micro-Budget Feature 1. Make sure the script is written as a micro-budget feature. That the script must be excellent is a given. You can't make a good movie from a mediocre script. But if you're intending to shoot a micro-budget movie, you also need a script that works with -- rather than fights -- your budgetary constraints. Of course that means avoid car chases, tons of VFX and period pieces. Moreover, think about where your film fits in the marketplace. Don't make a $200K version of a studio romantic comedy – you won't have the star power or marketing budget to compete with "Valentine's Day." "Mutual Friends,...

The dark comedy Teddy Bears has added quite a bit of acting power, as Variety reports David Krumholtz, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, Gillian Jacobs, Zachary Knighton, Ahna O’Reilly and Ned Beatty have all joined the cast.
