According to the Chronicle, Newcastle have been offered the chance to resign Loic Remy on loan for the rest of the season. The 29-year-old is being mooted as a quick fix option for January, as the Magpies look to add to their poor goals tally and even poorer league position.
But would it really be the right decision?
At 29, Remy isn’t exactly a spring chicken, and though he’s still looked sharp when he’s got playing time for Chelsea, he’s not playing all that regularly and Newcastle would run the risk of waiting for him to get back to sharpness. That’s arguably better than looking to sign a young European striker with no experience of the Premier League, but it’s still something of a gamble.
At this stage, the options for Newcastle are being suggested as Charlie Austin, someone unknown who...

Hot on the tail of news that Guus Hiddink is closing in on the signing of Ukrainian based Brazilian attacking midfielder Alex Teixeira for £30m, the new Chelsea boss is now being linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Isco.
The London Evening Standard are reporting that Chelsea are considering rivalling both Man City and Juventus for the signature of the Spanish midfielder who has struggled to make an impact in Madrid since joining back in 2013. He’s made just 9 starts this term, and while the Standard say Madrid are “unwilling to sell this month”, the player is concerned about losing his place in Spain’s Euro 2016 squad.
Whether he would command the same sort of fee as he did when he moved from Malaga to Madrid two years ago remains to be seen, but Chelsea are already making a statement of intent in their pursuit of Teixeira.

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren has admitted he is “very surprised” that Daryl Janmaat has been left out of the latest Holland squad by new Netherlands head coach Danny Blind.
Holland face crucial European Championship 2016 qualifiers against Iceland and Turkey during the upcoming international break, but 25-cap Janmaat will not be part of the squad.
The Magpies right-back was an important member of Louis van Gaal’s 2014 World Cup squad, and he was also a regular under previous boss Guus Hiddink.
Owen Humphreys/Pa Wire
Yet it seems Dutch legend Danny Blind – father of Manchester United defender Daley – does not fancy Janmaat, at least not at the moment anyway.
And, when asked about Janmaat’s omission, McClaren said (The Chronicle):
“It surprises me, but I’m not the national manager of Holland.
“I know he’s changed but I’m very surprised.”

Southampton’s strong opening to their Premier League campaign this season has been rewarded with a duo of September monthly awards. New boss Ronald Koeman, in only his third month in the job, took home the Manager of the Month award, while £8.8 million striker Graziano Pelle picked up September’s Player of the Month.
September saw Southampton achieve a 100% record and rise as high as 2nd in the league. All three teams beaten in the Premier League were also managed by ex-Saints with Qpr’s Harry Redknapp a recipient of this same award in March 2005 while Southampton boss, Swansea’s Garry Monk having spent seven years as a Saints player, and Newcastle’s Alan Pardew (2012 Manager of the Season) having joined the Magpies after being fired from Saints in 2010.

Manchester United winger Nani is a target for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, according to the Mirror.
The Portuguese midfielder will sit out the English champion’s three-week long pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia with injury, meaning we could have seen the 26-year-old in a United shirt for the last time.
Cash-rich club Anzhi are hoping to secure Nani’s services in a £12 million deal, and former Red Devils coach Rene Muelensteen, who has joined Guus Hiddink at the Russian club, could be instrumental in any deal going through.
The 26-year-old fell out of favour under Sir Alex Ferguson last season and only made 10 Premier League appearances, and it is understood new manager David Moyes has offered no assurances that he will get more playing time next season either.
United paid Sporting Lisbon £17 million for Nani back in 2007 but with just one year remaining on the player’s contract,...

Time waits for no man in football, and it’s no different through the managers’ doors at Chelsea. Especially when your boss, eh, sorry, interim boss derides your fans for not backing him, and then criticises the board for brandishing him with the title mentioned above (a Rose by any other name, Rafa.)

Christopher Samba has passed his medical at Queens Park Rangers ahead of his move to Loftus Road after the Premier League strugglers met the £12.5million release clause in his contract, according to the Daily Mail.
The former Blackburn Rovers defender only joined Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala last year, but is set for a return to the Premier League.
Qpr manager Harry Redknapp said on Thursday morning:
“Samba has signed and that is a massive signing for us. That is the key one.
“He has passed his medical. He was having that last night so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
Samba has been playing for Anzhi but manager Guus Hiddink admitted defeat in holding on to the player.
The former Chelsea boss said:
“He left for England yesterday. I hope that today or tomorrow we’ll find out what has really happened.
“It’s a shame to talk about this...

In 2004, Jose Mourinho was appointed the new manager at an ever changing Chelsea, and it ushered in a period of unprecedented success for the Blues. They won three Premier League titles, four Fa Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League, though not all under the Portuguese’ guidance.
The club have had 8 managers since then, with the likes of Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti all coming and going. Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is just the latest in a long line of managers to sit in the hot-seat at Stamford Bridge, a job many associate with being a “poisoned chalice”.
Yet that has not deterred former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola from being linked with the job, and Benitez claimed recently that he would be “happy to hand over the reigns” to his fellow Spaniard.
And there’s a few things he can do to pave the way...

The last time Eastern Europe staged a European Championship saw a team from there crowned champions.
Czechoslovakia won the competition in Yugoslavia in 1976. Before that, the only other East European side to win was the Ussr – who won the inaugural competition in 1960.
Neither Czechoslovakia nor the Ussr exist today; but it is of great significance that the reincarnations of these past winners clash on the opening day of the first finals to be held in Eastern Europe for nearly four decades.
Russia dominated the former Ussr; while the Czechs have traditionally been stronger than the Slovak Republic – who formed Czechoslovakia with them. They have been placed in Group A with another Eastern European side – hosts Poland – who take on Greece in the tournament opener.
Russia, ranked 11 in the world, are favourites to top the group and go into today’s game following an impressive 3-0 friendly win over Italy last week.

With Roberto Di Matteo doing more than just ‘holding the fort at Chelsea and having guided the club to an unlikely Champions League final’, it would not come as a surprise if the Italian was given the job permanently should the Blues win European football’s biggest game tonight.
But Roman Abramovich is ruthless. Very ruthless. If Chelsea were to lose, the axe is likely to fall the other way.
Former manager Avram Grant guided Chelsea to the League Cup Final and more memorably, a Champions League Final in the 2007/2008 season. His first game came just a few days after Jose Mourinho had parted company with The Blues towards the end of September ’07. The result was a 2-0 loss against eventual champions, Manchester United. Grant then took his side on a sixteen match unbeaten streak, thumping Sven-Goran Eriksson’s newly-ambitious Manchester City, 6-0. During December of 2007 he was rewarded with a 4 year contract.

Blackburn Rovers captain Christopher Samba is on the verge of joining Russian side Fc Anzhi Makhachkala in a £12 million deal, according to the Telegraph.
27 year old Congo international Samba has been desperate to leave Blackburn since he handed in a transfer request and was frustrated when a move to Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur in the January Transfer Window was blocked by Rovers’ big price-tag. He hasn’t played for the club since January 2nd with Rovers boss Steve Keen proclaiming that his head wasn’t right for selection.
Now it looks like his desire to leave Ewood Park is finally about to happen. The Russian transfer window closes tonight, a few weeks after the Premier League mid-season window and it is believed a deal was struck between the two clubs and Samba just needs to agree personal terms.

After being recruited from Wigan in 2009 and consecutive improvements on Sunderland’s league position in his two completed seasons at the club, time was up for Steve Bruce after he was sacked as manager of the North East club on Sunday. Our question is, who is in the running to take the reigns at the Stadium of Light?
We know that owner Ellis Short has financial muscle and will no doubt want to improve the club as a force in the league. With this train of thought, we can assume that the American owner will want to attract the big names and the well respected managers of the business as opposed to an up and coming manager who may cost the club less but potentially be a risk to appoint.
Managers like Huddersfield’s Lee Clark or Brighton’s Gus Poyet could’ve been good shouts for the position but,...

Artwork courtesy of Espn and the Am I Collective. The German soccer team is commonly labeled as clinical, ruthless, and utterly determined. These are words that bend both ways. You might not want to share a beer with someone with those qualities, but you might not mind rooting for a team that bears them. Germany has won the World Cup three times; only Brazil and Italy have won more. The last time Germany didn’t reach the quarterfinals was in 1978. But perhaps most impressive of all, Germany has appeared in four of the last seven finals. Up until last fall, it looked dead on track to reap another round of devastation on its opponents, as it sailed through qualifying without a loss in ten matches—that included handing Guus Hiddink-coached Russia its first-ever World Cup qualifying defeat on home soil. But in November, Robert Enke, the team’s starting goalkeeper,...

Artwork courtesy of Espn and the Am I Collective. Much has been made of Ivory Coast’s star-studded squad—and of how little hardware it has to show for all its talent. The Elephants made it to the 2006 World Cup in dramatic fashion, qualifying when Cameroon’s extra-time penalty kick against Egypt hit the post. Since then, the Ivorians have been snake-bit. They made it to the finals of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, only to lose on penalty kicks to Egypt. They were drawn into the Group of Death in the 2006 World Cup, and were knocked out after losing to Argentina (2-1) and the Netherlands (2-1). They were then favored to win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 and 2010, but were eliminated by Egypt and Algeria, respectively. And now, in South Africa, Ivory Coast is in the Group of Death once again—its first two games are against Portugal and Brazil,...
