We return with the latest edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting the recent independent horror news sent our way. Today’s feature includes news on Herschell Gordon Lewis’s next film, Zombificador, details on a feature-length version of The Little Mermaid short film, a Truth or Dare teaser trailer, and much more:
Feature-Length Version of The Little Mermaid Announced: “The Little Mermaid is a live-action, supernatural thriller set in the 1930s Oklahoma dust bowl. This dark fantasy centers around a sideshow of “living aquatic oddities” in which the Little Mermaid herself is both a captive victim, and an incredibly powerful catalyst. As a character-driven thriller, the film transcends traditional indie “pick ‘em off in the dark one by one” offerings. Impacting each of the ensemble cast in a unique way, this is not the Little Mermaid you remember from your childhood!

Filmmaker Adam Barnick dropped us a line pointing us to a new music video he has just completed for the band Rivulets that without question wears its classic horror influences on its sleeve. Check it out for some spooky acoustic magic.
For more from the Rivulets, you can dig on some ear candy below the video for their track "How, Who."
About the Band
"Who? Singer-songwriter Nathan Amundson, joined by members of Low, Magnetic Fields, and Puritan. Sounds like? Dark, sparse folk music played on acoustic guitar and an assortment of other instruments (ukulele, xylophone, toy piano and more). How is it? Quietly effective and moving. The subtleties may be lost on first listen, but close examination will be rewarded handsomely." - Alternative Press, 2002

This week's entry goes for haunting imagery and a chilly sense of doom, courtesy of “slowcore” artist Rivulets (aka Nathan Amundsen) and director Adam Barnick, whose ties to the horror genre include contributions to horror site Icons of Fright and behind-the-scenes documentaries featured on the Blu-ray editions of Grace and Frozen. Barnick's chilling black & white visuals recall horror cinema's vintage era, including Carl Dreyer's dreamlike occult film Vampyr. Rivulets - How, Who - Official Music Video (HD) “How, Who” comes from Rivulets' new self-titled album, available now through their official site, where you can also preview more tracks from this and previous Rivulets releases.

I had the abosolute pleasure of being able to catch Chillerama in New York City this past Saturday at a midnight showing. Chillerama was less of a movie viewing “experience” and more of an “event” for me. I make this distinction because there are a number of things that made this trip special. For one, I live on Long Island, which is one of the Worst places to live if you’re a movie lover (and just in general). All the movies that I want to see are always playing in the city, and it’s not always so easy to get there because it’s time consuming. Chillerama was a film I needed to see, I‘m a huge fan of Adam Green, I think he is the face of contemporary horror, even if many dismiss him. I also respect Joe Lynch, Wrong Turn 2 is more than enjoyable in its own right,...

In a very short time, filmmaker Ron Purtee is becoming quite the expert on creating no-budget shorts. His first effort, Becoming Undead, garnered a lot of attention from Internet audiences and led to Purtee’s next project - The Social Media Massacre, which the filmmaker hopes will some day become a trilogy of films.
Dread Central recently caught up with Purtee to find out what some of his favorite independent genre flicks are.
1. Raymond Did It (Written/Directed by Travis Legge)
I had the pleasure of seeing this on the big screen, and it did not disappoint. It's a huge throwback to films like Prom Night and Halloween. And the kills? Well, the kills are some of the most inventive things I've ever seen. Made me not want to do my laundry for a week. My family was less than happy.
2. Frozen (Written/Directed by Adam Green)

Writer/director Adam Barnick made his first impression on genre fans back in 2007 with his surrealistic vision of conformity, Mainstream, a short film that was released as part of Fangoria’s Blood Drive II. After Mainstream, Barnick went on to produce some of the most masterful behind-the-scenes featurettes for other indie favorites including Grace and Frozen and is now currently working on his documentary What is Scary? as well as a music video for singer/songwriter Rivulets.
We recently caught up with Barnick who gave us a look at some of his favorite independent horror flicks that may not be on the radar of a lot of genre fans out there.
1. Habit (1997)
I saw this film at the best or worst time, depending on how you look at it. Having recently moved to New York City after struggling to return there post-school, I lost my job and my girlfriend in the span of two weeks,...

Filmmaker Adam Barnick dropped us a line over the holidays to tell us about his new documentary What is Scary? and it sounds like it's right up our alley. A few years ago while covering Paul Solet’s Grace during what almost seems like a lifetime ago now, this writer was introduced to Adam Barnick, the mastermind behind the extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes for Anchor Bay’s home release of the title.
From the start, Barnick struck me as a filmmaker who wasn’t just about rocking out brilliant behind-the-scenes featurettes (even though he certainly raised the bar for anyone looking to make a name for themselves doing bonus material work within the horror community) but more of a storyteller looking to give fans a different perspective on the genre he holds dearest to him.
Case in point: Barnick’s 2007 short film Mainstream, which was part of Fangoria’s Blood Drive II collection of short films of that year, was a dark and surreal examination of the human condition that gave me a whole new reason to fear needles while...

What is Scary? is a new independent documentary that is aiming to answer that very question. Director Adam Barnick explains: “I set up a voicemail a while back and invited people to call in and answer one question: “What is scary?” And I’ve been taking the answers, marrying them to pictures and creating this visual journey, like something that would be playing on the wall in an art gallery. Talking to folks in and out of horror to see what they have in common, what their differences are, and truly examine what ‘scary’ is.”
He’s currently finishing the film in hopes of festival play next Fall, but until then, here’s the trailer:
Also, check out the film’s official site here. Sounds pretty interesting and differen than the traditional horror doc.

It's been a while since we've had any news surrounding Mark Pavia's upcoming Christmas slasher flick, Sick Nick, but we're happy to report the project appears to be moving forward steadily.
According to Pavia's Facebook page the director is embarking on casting trip to the Midwest with plans for a February shoot. If you need a refresher, dig on the synopsis below:
House-sitting for the President of the University over Christmas break, Cindy Hart and her college classmates gear up for a crazy night of holiday fun when a massive snowstorm traps them inside without power. Undeterred, they continue to party, unaware of the horror that is about to pay them a visit – a human monster dressed in a red and white suit hell-bent on delivering his terrifying gifts. Written and directed by Mark Pavia (“The Night Flier”).
Extra special thanks to filmmaker Adam Barnick for the heads-up on this one!

So really, dearest reader, what scares you the most? Speaking for myself, the answer is clear: the enigma that is Don King's Afro and the mystery that it represents. Okay, never mind ... it is frightening though. Filmmaker Adam Barnick has gone to great lengths to try and answer this question, and his new documentary, What is Scary?, is almost ready to shed some light on the subject.
"What is Scary? is an independent documentary that asks and analyzes a basic question that everyone has an answer for, if not an easy answer. While not intending to simply be a list of fears, phobias or 'what scares you', we hope to provoke thought and discussion while entertaining an audience, inside and outside of fans of the horror genre," says Barnick.
"Initial production was simple: A voicemail was set up, and people were encouraged to call in and answer the question 'What is scary?...

I can remember interviewing Adam Green this time last year one late night for an article about Grace, Paul Solet’s film that had premiered during the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, which Green helped champion and produce.
One year later, Green is back in Park City for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, but this time as a writer/director for his own film, Frozen (review here). I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to speak with him to find out how different the Sundance experience is for him this time around and to find out the latest surrounding Frozen’s February 5th release.
So how is Green holding up with the frenetic pace of Sundance? He had just one word to sum it up: exhausting.

If I may get a little incestuous for a moment… It’s always nice to see filmmakers whom Fango gave an early boost making good, and the recently released Blu-ray and DVD of Grace showcase three directors who were part of our Blood Drive short-film compilation discs. Not only are there Means To An End creators Paul Solet, who wrote and helmed Grace, and Jake Hamilton, who chronicled its trip to the Sundance Film Festival, but also Mainstream’s Adam Barnick, who put together its exemplary behind-the-scenes package.
The multiple featurettes demonstrate that this story of a very unusual birth and the unsettling events that follow was a (no pun intended) labor of love, and it’s also clear from the conviction with which Solet spins his weird tale that it was a passion project for him.
