There’s been a lot of Oscar buzz for Ron Howard’s drama “Hillbilly Elegy” with Amy Adams and Glenn Close premiering Nov. 24 on Netflix. But thi Oscar winner is also a strong contender in Best Documentary Feature for his well-received film “Rebuilding Paradise.” It was unveiled in January at Sundance, released theatrically and digitally in July, and will air commercial free Nov. 8 on National Geographic.
The NatGeo premiere is on the second anniversary of the devastating Camp Fire that destroyed almost all of the picturesque town of Paradise, California and surrounding areas killing 85 people, uprooting 50,000 residents and destroying some 95% of the town’s structures including hospitals and schools.
In “Rebuilding Paradise,” Howard, who won Oscars for producing and directing 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” vividly captures the harrowing firestorm that took 10 days to contain; the bravery of the firefighters and police, the tragedy of lives and homes lost; and the...

Looking back on the last few months, many have indulged in bouts of self-pity, perhaps even despair. “I can’t get a haircut”, “The movie theatres are closed”, “The store’s outta’ Tp”, were often heard in conversation or on social media. But at least you could complain in the comfort of your home. What happens when that gets wiped out in minutes, or in this case, an entire town (comprised of long-time residents). This new documentary is not focused on faraway land ravaged by earthquakes or tsunamis. Yes, it’s set in the US of A, where parts of the country get battered by floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, along with some nasty tremors. For this film, the makers zero in the West where fire season looks to replace Fall or Winter for a look at an entire town almost wiped off the map. Oh, that filmmaker is an Oscar winner...

As someone residing as far from wildfire country California as possible here in snowy Buffalo, Butte County’s town of Paradise brought two things to mind: the utter devastation suffered on November 8, 2018 and Donald Trump’s callous chuckle upon discovering he couldn’t even muster the empathy necessary to correctly identify the home of the survivors he was meant to console. Director Ron Howard talks about this phenomenon during his post-screening Q&a, describing it as one of the main reasons he sent a film crew as soon as possible to embed themselves and document the aftermath. We’re constantly asked to consume so much tragedy that it’s difficult to truly care beyond the spectacle of those initial moments. We move along to the next thing when their real work begins.

Ron Howard, over the last decade, has directed a handful of documentaries (all of them about popular musicians), and maybe it’s no surprise that he has turned out to be an ace craftsman of the nonfiction form. But “Rebuilding Paradise,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is a different kind of Ron Howard documentary, and not just because it’s about the aftermath of a devastating catastrophe. In this movie, Howard more or less abandons the classical mode of nonfiction storytelling for a style that’s more loose and random and verité; it’s as if he was trying to make his version of a Fred Wiseman film. There are, of course, advantages to this approach. Yet there are disadvantages as well. “Rebuilding Paradise” is a movie that shows us a great deal without necessarily exploring what it shows.
