Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Gabrielle Union tells me exclusively that she and Eva Longoria are developing an LGBTQ wedding comedy feature for Amazon Studios. They’ll not only produce the film but likely star as dueling soon-to-be mothers-in-law whose sons are getting married.
“Eva and I try to take over their wedding [planning] and make it the wedding of our dreams versus theirs,” Union said on Nov. 13 at a tastemaker screening of “The Inspection.” The untitled project is being written by Ricardo Gamboa and produced by Macro Film Studios, Union’s I’ll Have Another Productions and Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment.
Union also gave me an update on “Got to Be,” a Billy Porter-directed road trip movie she’s producing about three Rhode Island high schoolers who travel to New York City for their first Pride parade. It was inspired by Union and husband Dwyane Wade...

Ghetto Film School, in partnership with Madison Wells, is launching the Ghetto Film School Melissa Rucker Fund for young filmmakers.
The fund honors Rucker, the former producer and development executive at Madison Wells who was committed to inclusivity in the industry. Rucker passed away late last year after nurturing the careers and stories of playwrights Minhal Baig and Molly Smith Metzler, directors Haifaa al-Mansour and Tina Mabry, novelist Emma Straub and several others. She’s credited with advocating for new talent, especially creatives from underrepresented backgrounds.
The organizations will hold the first-ever New Voices: The Melissa Rucker Conversations on Thursday to raise money for the Ghetto Film School Melissa Rucker Fellows Fund. Madison Wells’ founder Gigi Pritzker will moderate with writer-artist Ricardo Gamboa, Karen Horne (WarnerMedia) and Rishi Rajani (Hillman Grad Productions) as they discuss ways to support and encourage young filmmakers. Access to the panel is invitation only.

For too long, the term bruja, which translates to ‘witch’, has remained a taboo in the Latino community. But, thanks to playwright Tanya Saracho, the Bruja movement, a subculture of Afro-Latina millennials reclaiming the elements of brujeria, the Spanish word for “witchcraft”, will soon get its due on television.
Deadline reports that the Mexico-born writer is developing a show titled Brujas that centers around the Bruja movement in Chicago, following four Afro-Latinas. The series is being produced by Big Beach, an independent production company responsible for films such as Little Miss Sunshine and Our Idiot Brother.

Some web series are driven by strong ideas. Others focus on providing strong characters who can connect with audiences. For some creators, serving underrepresented audiences is a primary goal.
For Brujos, created by Ricardo Gamboa, all of these statements are true. Gamboa's project is a bold, ambitious show that offers up complex heroes and places them within a supernatural situation. Its protagonists are gay, Latino witches who possess special powers thanks to their initiation into a cabalistic club. At the same time, they're also grad students who must master political theory, navigate their respective personal relationships and romances, and fend off a group of white hunters who are looking to spill the blood of their coven.
The strength of Brujos is not just degree to which it presents complex, challenging characters, but also its compelling cinematography, which allows the lives it depicts to resonate brilliantly. This is a show that succeeds on all levels,...

Brujos webseries
I’ve talked up Open TV in this space before, but I can’t help that its programming has been great and so relevant to my interests. Samantha Bailey’s You’re So Talented offered a previously unseen Chicago, and she followed that up with Brown Girls, which has become one of my favorite series about female friendships. Then I heard about Brujos, which is a new webseries about queer Latinx witches who are basically fighting white supremacy. Um, sí! please. Its undeniable queerness and brownness will serve as a high bar for entry for some, but for others—namely, queer and brown folks—it will feel like a Buffy The Vampire Slayer that was made for them. Creator-writer (and MacArthur fellow) Ricardo Gamboa stars as Panfilo in the series, which offers a bold new portrayal of marginalized, radicalized people on the small screen. Reshmi Hazra Rustebakke co-directs...

Chicago – Just two weeks after the European Union Film Festival concluded at the Gene Siskel Film Center, another excellent international showcase of world cinema began in the Windy City. The 26th Chicago Latino Film Festival screens over 120 films during its two-week run, highlighting Latino filmmakers and cultures from Latin America, Portugal, Spain and the United States.
The festival is presented by the International Latino Cultural Center, in cooperation with Columbia College Chicago, and runs from Friday, April 16th to Thursday, April 29th. It kicked off last Friday with an Opening Night Gala in the form of a Mexican fiesta, commemorating Mexico’s Bicentennial Independence and Centennial Revolution Anniversary. “Round Trip,” the winner at last year’s Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival, was screened, and its director, Gerardo Tort, was in attendance. Yet there are plenty more first-class festival events in store for moviegoers during this upcoming week.
