Donald Trump called today’s impeding impeachment vote an “assault on America,” but for the Big 4 networks the expected move by the Democratic dominated House of Representatives will likely besiege primetime programming.
As members of Congress continue to put their clearly partisan Pov on the record and cable newsers in the vaulted chamber over the two articles of impeachment right now, the actual vote to indict the former Celebrity Apprentice host looks set to start within the hour. In what is only the third time a President has been impeached in American history, that process will crash right up against ABC’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience: All in The Family & Good Times, the season finales of CBS’ Survivor and Fox’s The Masked Singer, and NBC’s Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways encores.

Fox buried the lede when it renewed Empire last month: The series’ upcoming sixth season will also be its last, the network announced on Monday (and it’s moving to a new night).
During a conference conference call with reporters, Fox CEO Charlie Collier elaborated on the decision to end the Taraji P. Henson-Terrence Howard soap with Season 6, side-stepping questions about what role — if any — the real-life drama surrounding embattled cast member Jussie Smollett played into it.
“We’re turning the final season of Empire into a large television event,” Collier said of the Tuesday-bound drama. “We are going out guns-a-blazing.

The fate of Cole and Murtaugh has been decided. After three seasons, Fox has canceled Lethal Weapon.
The news is not unexpected. As we noted in our story yesterday on Fox’s decision to pick up four new drama series, with a fifth pending, the move did not bode well for the network’s bubble dramas, including Lethal Weapon and The Passage, both of which were canceled today.
Lethal Weapon has been through the wringer since the firing of Clayne Crawford last spring over issues with on-set behavior. The show landed a last-minute Season 3 renewal after finding a new co-lead in Seann William Scott who was received fairly well by fans. Then last fall, star Damon Wayans dropped the bomb that he was going to leave after the first 13 episodes of Season 3. He later signed off for three more episodes and was reportedly open to another season.

The new Fox Entertainment is beginning to take shape.
The Charlie Collier-run network has handed out its first series orders since becoming an independent broadcaster after seeing its sibling TV studio move to Disney as part of the $71.3 billion asset sale.
Picked up to series are four dramas — the Stephen Dorff-led Deputy; the thriller Next (a favorite of Collier's, sources say); the Greg Berlanti-produced Prodigal Son; and the untitled Annie Weisman and Jason Katims drama formerly known as Sisters. Those join the animated comedy The Great North, from the creative team behind Bob's Burgers, and the multicamera comedy Outmatched,...

Fox’s breakout hit The Masked Singer will be produced within the newly streamlined Fox Corp., entertainment chief Charlie Collier confirmed during Fox’s investor day.
Fox Alternative Entertainment will handle the show as Endemol Shine exits the North American production. The budget for Season 2 of the show, Collier said, will come in below that of the debut season as a result. He didn’t break out the numbers or fully unpack the claim, but said it fit with the company’s overall mission to keep a lid on costs while taking advantage of its reach.
“The advantage of being a broadcast network is that we are home to programming for mass audiences,” Collier said during his presentation to investors. He saluted Masked Singer as the latest in a long line of risky Fox programming bets. “Technically, Masked Singer could have ended up on any platform but you have to note that it didn’t,...

Fox Entertainment is launching a new in-house unscripted studio, and bringing production of reality hit “The Masked Singer” in house.
“On the unscripted side, we’ve also begun to establish in-house production capabilities. Moving forward, this decision gives us a stronger ownership position and greater creative control over our programming while keeping production costs down, and generating additional revenue,” Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment, said Thursday during the company’s investor day. “As a result of this initiative, ‘The Masked Singer’ will be produced in-house and our budget will be significantly below that of Season 1.”
Endemol Shine North America, which produced and developed the first season for Fox, will leave the series while it moves over to Fox. Craig Plestis, who produced the series under his Smart Dog Media banner and served as showrunner, will stay on as showrunner for the second season. Endemol Shine will continue to produce...

Rupert Murdoch opened Fox Corp.’s Investor Day presentation on Thursday with a promise that the slimmed-down company will be a Wall Street growth story.
Murdoch, Fox Corp. chairman, told the crowd in New York that he decided to sell most of his Hollywood assets to Disney in order to make the most out of all that he had assembled over the past few decades. “We were pivoting at a pivotal moment while staying true of course to our principles and our purpose,” he said.
Murdoch asserted that the 20th Century Fox studio and other assets were better off under the Disney umbrella in order to achieve scale rather than struggle to compete against the deep pockets of the tech giants moving into video.
The remaining businesses that form the new Fox Corp. — Fox Broadcasting, Fox News and Fox Sports — will be energized with new focus and resources.

The Masked Singer has a new producer.
Fox Entertainment, the studio-free, independent broadcast network, is launching its own in-house production company — Fox Alternative Entertainment — starting with the unscripted singing competition.
The Charlie Collier-run Fox is bringing production on The Masked Singer in-house, while season one producers Endemol Shine North America have exited the U.S. version of the global format. Fox's in-house studio will be overseen by president of alternative entertainment and specials Rob Wade, who will continue to identify formats for the U.S. and expand them internationally. If its 2018 upfront brought a taste of “New Fox,” the 2019 outing will offer a full-on assault.
No longer in mid-merger limbo, with former chiefs Dana Walden and Gary Newman onto other things, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier will go it alone — likely bragging about slightly improved ratings, up 7 percent to tie CBS for No. 2 in the key demo this season with an average 1.6 rating, and the surprise success of The Masked Singer. But don’t let that confuse you. (Fox’s modest resurgence is largely credited to the arrival of Thursday ...

At 20 years of age, Charlie Collier of Zapamation may be a young filmmaker, but he’s already got almost eight years of stop-motion experience behind him. A self-taught animator, he says he was able to get into this partly because of the flexibility he gained from being homeschooled; he was able to incorporate animation into the curriculum. When he finished high school he decided to try his luck as a full-time freelancer. He hopes to attend film school some time in the future when he has built up “a little bit of a portfolio.” Collier has already created animations for clients …...

The Golden Globes has made cable channel AMC one-for-one on the awards circuit.
The Cablevision-owned network received its first-ever nominations for its first original-programming effort, the June miniseries Broken Trail. The four-hour Western drama collected three mentions, one for best miniseries/motion picture for TV and actor nods for Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church.
Trail already delivered a monster audience of 9.7 million over two nights, but the nominations have a value all their own, noted Charlie Collier, executive vp and general manager of AMC.
"We're thrilled to be recognized this way," said Collier, who moved from Court TV to AMC in September. "Without exception, 'Broken Trail' has become a turning point moment for AMC."
Rob Sorcher, executive vp original programming and production at AMC, said the noms give AMC additional credibility as it attempts to build on the momentum of Trail with a slate of series and miniseries. The network plans on rolling out its first original drama series next year.

Charlie Collier, former executive vp and general manager of ad sales at Court TV, has been named general manager of cable network AMC. In his new role, Collier will oversee the day-to-day operations of the network, working to enhance the AMC brand through "inventive" marketing, advertising and programming strategies across multiple platforms. Collier takes a position that has been vacant since June 2003, when AMC president Kate McEnroe, AMC executive vp and general manager Noreen O'Loughlin and 12 other Cablevision employees were let go in the wake of an accounting scandal. He will report to Ed Carroll, president of Rainbow Entertainment Services.

Turner Broadcasting said Thursday that it has executed another round of layoffs at Court TV, including the cable channel's advertising sales chief. Charlie Collier, executive vp and general manager of ad sales at Court TV, is among a dozen employees let go by the Time Warner-owned division. Turner eliminated 50 other Court TV employees in June, one month after the company bought out Liberty Media Corp.'s 50% stake of the company. A Turner spokeswoman said that the impacted areas, which included Court TV's human resources and legal departments, will be absorbed by Turner.
