Canal+ Ups Stake In Asian Streamer Viu
France’s Canal+ has increased its stake in Viu to 36.8% as part of its $300M investment in the Southeast Asian streamer. This represents the last instalment of the cash injection and follows a strategic agreement Canal+ struck with Viu parent Pccw last year in June. The initial investment was $200M for a 26.1% stake, meaning it likely has paid $100M for the further 10.7%. Canal+ has the option to increase its stake in Viu to 51% in the future. Viu currently operates in 16 markets across Asia, the Middle East and South Africa and claimed to have over 62 million active monthly users, with 13 million paying subscribers, as of December 2023. It recorded revenues of $314M last year, which represented growth of 23% year over year. Exclusive: Hostile Planet producer Plimsoll Productions is moving into scripted. The natural history producer has hired Lisa Gilchrist, producer of Dominic West-fronted crime thriller Appropriate Adult, as Head of Drama.
This comes six months after the company, which also produces series such as Yellowstone Live and Netflix’s Night on Earth, has secured multi-million-dollar investment from private equity firm Ldc.
Gilchrist, who reports to Plimsoll CEO Grant Mansfield, has worked with Mrs Wilson producer Snowed-In Productions as well as ITV and the BBC. Other projects she has worked on include ITV’s See No Evil: The Moors Murders and This is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper and BBC One’s The Moorside.
She has been tasked with developing original scripted series with an initial focus on factual drama for the UK and international marketplace.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced Tuesday (April 24) the nominations for its 2012 television awards. British miniseries "Appropriate Adult," which chronicles the real-life serial killer Fred West, leads the way with four nominations.
Other notable nominations include Dame Maggie Smith up for Supporting Actress for her work on "Downton Abbey" - it's the only nomination "Downton" received, after earning two nominations the previous year. "Modern Family" also earned a nomination in the International category.
