"Star Trek: Picard" shares more than a little DNA with "12 Monkeys." In its third season, the recently ended "Trek" sequel series was captained by showrunner Terry Matalas, who co-created the wild Syfy Channel adaptation of Terry Gilliam's also-wild film. Aside from a shared showrunner, "Star Trek: Picard" was home to several key cast and crew members who worked on both shows – and nearly featured one more.
In a Reddit Ama about the show's third season, user Drewski1138 pointed out several narrative choices in "Picard" that echoed "12 Monkeys," including references to a mysterious red realm, a new drug called "Splinter" (a reference to "12 Monkeys" time travel), and more. "Were there any '12 Monkeys' Easter eggs we might have missed ... Were there any that you were told you couldn't put in?" the user asked Matalas. The answer? No, but there was one Easter egg that never came to...

Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick on the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," has rapidly become a favorite of Trekkies everywhere. Unlike the aloof-yet-diplomatic Captain Picard, the no-nonsense Captain Sisko, or the family-friendly authoritarian Captain Janeway, Shaw is brusque, unfriendly, and even a bit of a jerk, more willing to adhere to protocol than listen to his crew. He's the kind of boss you hope you never have to work under. He's also not necessarily an incompetent starship captain and will follow whatever course of action that keeps his crew safe. Naturally, Trekkies have been quick to suggest that Captain Shaw and his crew be given their own spin-off TV series. Whether or not "Star Trek: Titan" ever appears remains to be seen, but the current season of "Picard" has not yet concluded, so many viewers are holding their breath, hoping that Shaw and his crew survive to the end.

[This story contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard, season three, episode four.]
For fans of Star Trek: Picard’s landmark third season, actor-director Jonathan Frakes has emerged as one of the series’ MVPs.
The Star Trek: The Next Generation veteran arguably delivers career-best work — both in front and behind the camera — in this week’s fourth episode, “No Win Scenario.” This complex hour, directed by Frakes and written by Picard showrunner Terry Matalas and Sean Tretta, finds the damaged U.S.S Titan-a adrift in a mysterious space anomaly. Captain Riker (Frakes) and key crew members of the Titan are afforded plenty of time to re-open old wounds as they confront the events of their traumatic pasts that have helped put their futures in jeopardy.
One of those events centers on fan-favorite Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick), who pays Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard a very tense visit inside a holodeck bar. Here, Shaw reveals...

Antonio Banderas famously portrayed the masked vigilante in 1998’s film The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 follow-up The Legend of Zorro. Banderas recently opened up about being game for a third installment of the franchise and who he would like to pass on the torch to play the titular character.
“Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not?” Banderas told ComicBook of starring in a third film. “Yeah, I think today, I said something like that to somebody. They asked me about Zorro. If they called me to do Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
Banderas said that he would like to see his Uncharted costar Tom Holland behind the mask.
“I did Uncharted with him, and he’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got this spark too,” Banderas said. “Why not?”

The long-gestating Zorro TV series reboot with a female protagonist has moved a step closer to reality with an order for six additional scripts from the CW, bringing the script total to 7. As Deadline reported exclusively last month, the CW’s gender-swapped reimagining of the classic masked vigilante character hails from from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez, Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.), Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate and CBS Studios.
The pickup of backup scripts for Zorro joins three traditional pilot orders the CW made today, to Berlanti Prods.’ latest DC project, Gotham Knights, the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters as well as the Walker prequel Walker: Independence. This represents the bulk of the CW’s orders this pilot season, I hear there is a chance for one additional one that could be straight-to-series. The “Supernatural” prequel “The Winchesters,” the “Walker” prequel “Walker: Independence,” and the DC series “Gotham Knights” have all landed pilot orders at The CW.
In addition, the broadcaster has given six additional scripts for their “Zorro” project. Further details on that project can be found below.
“The Winchesters” was first reported as being in development back in June 2021. Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), the show is the untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.
Robbie Thompson will serve as writer and executive producer on the pilot, with Thompson previously having been a writer and co-executive producer on the original show. Jensen and Danneel Ackles will executive produce via Chaos Machine, which has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Wbtv and CBS Studios will co-produce.

Exclusive: Zorro is headed to the CW. The young-skewing network has put in development a gender-swapped reimagining of the classic masked vigilante character, from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez, Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.) and Ben Siverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate. CBS Studios, where Propagate has a deal, is the studio.
This is a new incarnation of the project, which was in development at NBC during the 2020-21 cycle, with Tretta as a new addition to the brother-and-sister writing team of Robert and Rebecca Rodriguez.
Co-penned by the trio and to be directed by Rebecca Rodriguez, in Zorro, a young Latinx woman seeking vengeance for her father’s murder joins a secret society and adopts the outlaw persona of Zorro. I hear the story by Robert and Rebecca Rodriguez was already in place when Tretta, who has an overall deal at CBS Studios, came on board earlier this cycle to write the script.

Sons of Anarchy has been off the air for several years, but the franchise remains alive thanks to its spinoff Mayans M.C.
FX dropped the official trailer for the long-delayed Mayans M.C. Season 3 this week, and it left fans of the original series with a lot of questions.
The reason?
The footage shows Allesandro Montez (Jacob Vargas) delivering a warning to an unseen person.
"One wrong move could start a war," Montez says, before the footage switching to someone struggling after someone tries to suffocate them.
While the face is not visible, the Road Captain patch is there in the frame, seemingly alluding to Allesandro's death.
It's hard to imagine a trailer spoiling such a huge development, but it could be an interesting way to drum up interest for the third season, especially for fans of the original series who have not been keeping up to speed with the spinoff.

Just like they did back in 2011 with the first ABCs of Death, Magnet Releasing, Timpson Films and Drafthouse Films recently put together a competition designed to find the 26th director for the upcoming sequel ABCs of Death 2. Well-known as well as up-and-coming horror filmmakers were each given a letter of the alphabet and tasked with making a short film centering around a word that begins with that letter, with fans encouraged to submit their own films for the unclaimed letter M.
Since the launch of the contest in August, well over 500 short films were submitted from over 40 different countries, and the top twelve finalists have just been announced – six were decided by a jury while the other six made the cut based on votes from other fans.
We’ve compiled all twelve of the shorts for you below, which should only take you about a half an hour to get through.

It may be Monday, but demons still want to party, and as producer Kevin Tenney told us this morning, they're preparing to do so in a splatter-filled sequel to the 2009 remake of his 1988 cult classic Night of the Demons. Read on for more!
"It’s been too long since something unspeakable has happened with a tube of lipstick," said Tenney (pictured), "and I think it’s time to change that with Night of the Demons: After-Party, which will be the funniest, bloodiest, nastiest Night of the Demons yet."
Joining producer Tenney for the sequel will be director Anthony Hickox (Waxwork, Hellraiser 3), who will direct from a script by Sean Tretta (Death of a Ghost Hunter, The Prometheus Project), and actress/horror veteran Tiffany Shepis, who will star. Gabe Bartalos (Leprechaun, Basket Case 2 & 3) will handle make-up and special effects, and Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th, House), will score the film.

Group of scientists discover a method of reanimating the dead through stem cell research that results in a gunshot victim being brought back to life, but things go awry as he takes on violent tendencies.
Muddled, though intriguing film introduces Tiffany Shepis as the narrator and lead character of the film. However, her character isn't as instrumental to the story as some of the other characters and she ends up fading into the background for most of the second half. Still, she turns in one of the best performances of her career, to date. The story charts into standard stalk and slash in the last act. And the overall story doesn't feel complete.

You can’t blame Tiffany Shepis (Trade In) for trying to make create some more interesting work for herself as she does here, where she’s credited as one of four producers and cast as a genetic scientist. (Not that she’s hurting for work—the IMDb shows she’s signed on for 22 more films after this one in 2010.) But our favorite B-Actress could do better than a film that 1) requires her to wear a mask for many scenes, and 2) has a little bit more coherency, tension, drama, suspense . . . you know, stuff that keeps a viewer interested.

Mti will release the horror movie The Frankenstein Syndrome, a contemporary re-imagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein, on DVD on July 5 for a list price of $24.95.
Something monstrous this way comes in The Frankenstein Syndrome.
Written, directed and produced by Sean Tretta (The Great American Snuff Film), The Frankenstein Syndrome focuses on a beautiful stem-cell researcher Elizabeth Barnes (Tiffany Shepis, Bonnie and Clyde Vs. Dracula), who joins a secret research group in attempting to develop a stem-cell-based universal healing serum. Despite opposition, she quickly develops a serum that can bring the dead back to life – but with horrific results that involve lots of mayhem, lots of murders and a good deal of blood, as well.
A 2010 production, the film also stars Louis Mandylor (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Scott Anthony Leet (Abandoned) and Ed Lauter (Magic).

*a screener of this film was provided by Mti Home Video.
Director: Sean Tretta.
Writers: Mary Shelley and Sean Tretta.
The tale of Prometheus is one of epic Greek proportions. Consisting of three dramas, one about the Titan's heroic refusal to submit to Zeus' rule, the other of Zeus' realization to develop maturity and the last, perhaps lost to time, probably about his reconciliation with the rebel god Prometheus. The poet Hesiod was the first to develop this myth and portions of it can be found in Mary Shelley's seminal ghost story, Frankenstein.
In her tale, she reveals how Dr. Frankenstein is playing with fire. He is playing god by giving life to where it ceased to exist, and that ultimately destroys him. The monster he creates is a dodgy figure but by that story’s end, it reveals itself to a god-fearing sailor and demonstrates remorse when the rugged doctor finally dies.

The Frankenstein Syndrome is a film based on the Mary Shelley story we all know. In this case though, we get a modern day horror tale that is also very original in its own right.
Writer and director Sean Tretta has put together a unique vision. This is still very much a Frankenstein story, it just has new characters to play with like Dr. Elizabeth Barnes ( Tiffany Shepis) who we see in the very beginning running from something and then the movie fast forwards to her wearing a mask and wheel chair bound being interrogated by investigators. This is where her story begins.
What happens is Barnes get recruited by Dr. Walton (Ed Lauter) who has this team of doctors trying to find a cure for cancer in some sort of underground lab where we see their test subjects are humans. David (Scott Anthony Leet) is one of the unlucky...

Mti Home Video has acquired Sean Tretta's (Death of a Ghost Hunter) The Frankenstein Syndrome for North American distribution. This indie film is a modern retelling of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. Based on the bloody trailer, The Frankenstein Syndrome is more horrifying than the original 1800s fiction.

At the age of 14, Tiffany Shepis made her film debut with a bit part in Troma's 1996 cult fave Tromeo and Juliet. Since that unassuming start, Shepis has gone on to become one of indie horror's most loved, and most talented, performers. I recently sat down with Shepis for a free-wheeling, unfiltered conversation about her life, her career, and long hours, bad food and stupid people.

Horror filmmaker Sean Tretta has become pretty good at problem-solving. On small, independent flicks like Death Factory Bloodletting, Tretta had to deal with the usual issues that plague a low-budget shoot. But his new movie, The Frankenstein Syndrome, is his largest production to date. And with a bigger budget comes a whole new set of problems. "What surprised me is that no matter how much money you have, you always wish you had more."
"I had far more money for Frankenstein Syndrome than I had on all my other films combined, but it was still hard work," Tretta says. "Bigger productions mean more people and more issues. Obviously, the goal of any film, regardless of the budget, is to stretch each dollar as far as you can. People are shocked when I tell them what the budget of our film is — shocked that we did it for as little as we did.

One of the best tests of a story's merit is its ability to be adapted. If it's truly good, it can span eras and be repeatedly refashioned into something more, something relevant for a new age. By this measure, Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus is surely one of the great tales.
Through the years, Shelley's book has served as the foundation for countless entertainments, both high and low. Director Sean Tretta's new film, The Frankenstein Syndrome, distinguishes itself from the pack of Frankenflicks because it manages to be a rather serious examination of ethics as well as a brutal horror show.

Best known for a plethora of low-budget direct-to-video scare flicks, scream queen Tiffany Shepis (Nympha, Nightmare Man, The Ghouls, Tromeo & Juliet, etc.) has now turned a corner in her career where she finds her name attached to genre films of growing quality and intelligence. Movies like the dark drama Rule Of Three (see feature here), the Butcher Brothers’ 2010 festival hit The Violent Kind and this year’s Arizona-lensed The Frankenstein Syndrome. Shepis spoke to Fango about (and we got exclusive pics from) the latter mad-scientist tale, written and directed by The Great American Snuff Film’s Sean Tretta.

It’s hard not to get excited about an independently-financed motion picture that re-imagines Mary Shelley’s classic novel “Frankenstein” as a genre flick with an abundance of gore, several squishy head shots, some cage fighting, and the always enjoyable Tiffany Shepis. Writer/director Sean Tretta’s upcoming feature “The Prometheus Project” doesn’t look too shabby, particularly since I have fondness for all of the elements listed above. The film chronicles the exploits of an ambitious doctor who uses stem cell research to reanimate dead tissue. All sorts of horrific hijinks ensue. I’m not sure how the cage fighting figures into the storyline, but I’m certainly intrigued by its inclusion. “The Prometheus Project” will screen at this year’s Dark Carnival Film Festival, which runs from November 19th until November 21st. Director: Sean Tretta. Review: Tim Irwin. Back in 2003 a few guys got together to make a small movie. Director Sean Tretta rounded up a little money, about $3,000, and crafted a story of a serial killer who enjoyed making films. The man, named William Allen Grones (Mike Marsh), fancied himself a director, setting up scenarios where he could document the kidnapping and imprisonment of two young ladies before killing them on camera. The Great American Snuff Film purports to be the true story of Grones' crimes, re-enacted and dramatized. Then, the story goes, new interview footage surfaced of Grones before his execution. Tretta evidently cut this new footage into the old film, making it five minutes longer, and has now released it as The Greatest American Snuff Film. The movie's strongest selling point is that the filmmakers have created a fiction surrounding Grones, calling him one of the worst serial killers to never get any publicity.

Blast those scientists always meddling in God's domain. Have none of them read Frankenstein? Now it's stem cells giving rise to an unhappy undead abomination. What have scream queen Tiffany Shepis and Louis (brother of Costas) Mandylor wrought upon us with The Prometheus Project?
The Prometheus Project tells the Frankenstein-inspired tale of a group of researchers conducting underground stem cell research that discover a cell anomaly that has the potential to regenerate dead tissue. Believing they have created a “universal healing serum”, the researchers apply the serum to corpses with “unfavorable” results.
And somehow cage fighting figures into it based on the photos I've seen at The Prometheus Project's MySpace page. I'm all for Frankenstein-ian Mma movies.
Starring the aforementioned Shepis and Mandylor, The Prometheus Project (currently in post-production) is the newest film from the appropriately titled Ominous Productions and writer-director-producer Sean Tretta, he of The Great American Snuff Film,...
