For Mac Quayle, composing the score for the HBO film project “The Great Lillian Hall” proved something of a departure from his most recent projects, which have included nine seasons of the FX anthology “American Horror Story,” the Fox/ABC procedural “9-1-1” and the Netflix drama “Leave the World Behind.” “Lillian Hall” tells the story of a legendary Broadway star (Jessica Lange) fearfully facing the ticking clock of time while doggedly working to defy it following a dementia diagnosis. In talking to director Michael Cristofer about the music, “we recognized this is an intimate story about Lillian Hall and this sudden dementia that she’s experiencing,” Quayle recalls. “We thought that (when) it needed some music that it shouldn’t be too big, it needed to have a little more intimate sound. So we chose as our palette nine strings and piano,...

Having it’s World Premiere at SXSW on March 14 was Alex Garland’s Civil War.
The Hollywood Reporter says, “The audience reaction to the film has been very effusive, with viewers calling it a riveting, disturbing, masterful piece of filmmaking (read the audience and critic first reactions).”
The consensus of many of the reviews out of the film festival in Austin say the film is brilliant:
“With the precision and length of its violent battle sequences, it’s clear Civil War operates as a clarion call. Garland wrote the film in 2020 as he watched cogs on America’s self-mythologizing exceptionalist machine turn, propelling the nation into a nightmare. With this latest film, he sounds the alarm, wondering less about how a country walks blindly into its own destruction and more about what happens when it does,” says Lovia Gyarkye in her review over at The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Leave the World Behind’ Review: Sam Esmail’s Apocalyptic Drama Is Taut, Terrifying and All Too Real
Apocalyptic thrillers are a dime a dozen these days. This year alone M. Night Shyamalan released his own take on the genre — also adapted from a popular novel — with this year’s “Knock at the Cabin.” But watching director/producer/screenwriter Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind” makes Shyamalan’s film feel quaint by comparison, with the “Mr. Robot” creator telling a two-hour descent into chaos that is compelling and utterly terrifying.
Based on the novel by Rumaan Alam, the film follows Amanda and Clay (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke), a couple who decide on a whim to leave their New York home with their two children and go on a weekend vacation to the small “hamlet” of Point Comfort in Long Island. But things go south when the owner of the house they’ve rented, a man known as G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali), arrives with his daughter.

Anyone who still needs convincing that we live in a fractured world may be startled by the futuristic nightmare drama Leave the World Behind, which had its world premiere at AFI Fest. Others might find something a bit stale in its portrait of racial suspicion and environmental catastrophe. Fine performances help to bolster a problematic picture written and directed by Sam Esmail, adapted from Rumaan Alam’s best-selling novel. The film will take its bow via Netflix in December, the streamer’s second release this year (after Rustin) that counts Barack and Michelle Obama among its executive producers.
The story starts with a New York family (Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke and, as their teenage children, Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans) leaving the city for a vacation in a Long Island rental home that advertised with the line “Leave the world behind.” The house and the grounds are indeed enticing, and...

Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali are dealing with the potential end of the world in “Leave the World Behind,” an adaptation of the best-selling novel by Rumaan Alam from “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.
In the trailer Roberts and Ethan Hawke are vacationing on Long Island when they are intercepted by a mysterious stranger (Ali in a role originally earmarked for Denzel Washington), who tells the couple of a mysterious blackout and his thoughts that this event is just the first in a series of catastrophes.
Kevin Bacon plays a potentially sinister local man, with Myha’la, Farrah Mackenzie and Charlie Evans in supporting roles. Not only is the set-up for the movie incredibly creepy but it feels real, especially given the recent weather events brought on by global warming (the flooding in New York most recently).

As noted in our Best TV Shows list, there was just a lot of television in 2022. It’s so, so easy for great work to get lost in the relentless churn of new streaming content, even as reality programming bends us ever closer to the “30 Rock” universe. It’s even easier for great musical work to get lost on television, where scores are able to have an ambition and originality the rest of a legacy IP production might lack, or to embrace experimental elements viewers may not even notice while they’re watching a conventional-looking scene. We double-checked that film legends John Williams and Howard Shore came to TV to score themes this year, because it feels like a million years ago already now.

Edie Falco is an undeniable Emmy magnet dating back to 1999. The acclaimed actress earned six Emmy nominations for “The Sopranos,” winning three times, and another six for “Nurse Jackie,” winning once. She also scored a bid for her guest spot on “30 Rock” in 2008 and another lead acting nomination for “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” in 2018. Now, she is hoping for her landmark 15th Emmy nomination for taking on the role of Hillary Clinton on “Impeachment: American Crime Story.”
For much of “Impeachment,” which centers on the Monica Lewinsky–Bill Clinton scandal, Falco’s Hillary floats in the background. While she isn’t given as much to do for most of the series, compared to Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, Clive Owen as Bill or Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, she is an evocative presence that gives an added layer to this fascinating story.

Brian Tyler, composer of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” was named a BMI Icon at Wednesday night’s 38th annual Broadcast Music Inc. Film, TV and Visual Media Awards in Beverly Hills.
Tyler is among the top 10 highest-grossing film composers of all time. His other films have included “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Rambo,” “Charlie’s Angels” and the recent reboot of “Scream.” His TV credits include “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Transformers: Prime.” He also wrote the Formula One racing theme and, as his alter ego Madsonik, has written and produced several songs with a contemporary edge.
“It’s just mind-blowing to now be included in that pantheon of talent,” Tyler told Variety, referring to the many previous recipients of the performing-rights organization’s highest accolade, including John Williams, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat and Terence Blanchard.

Composer Mac Quayle has become the go-to music person for many of Ryan Murphy’s projects including “Impeachment: American Crime Story.” The working relationship started in 2014 after he did some work for “The Normal Heart.” “Through that process, I met one of Ryan’s producers and I didn’t really think much of it, you know,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). Six months later he got an unexpected call from that producer about the latest installment of “American Horror Story.” “He said, ‘Would you be available to write a cue for us this afternoon?’ I happened to be free. Whether it’s “Ratched” “Pose” or “The Politician,” Ryan Murphy’s visual canvas is bold and vibrant and often filled with glitz and glamour. You could say the same of the music of Murphy’s world.
Mac Quayle first linked with Murphy in 2014’s “The Normal Heart,” on which he worked as an assistant composer. Then when producers on “American Horror Story” wanted to go in a different musical direction for the show’s fourth season, they called on Quayle, and he was hired.
Murphy sought a sound that was “1950s sci-fi strings,” so Quayle created a “string sound that had a retro feel, mixed in with a Theremin.” As Quayle explains: “That instrument was first used in ’50s sci-fi movies, and I mixed it to create the piece, and they loved it.”

Netflix's Ratched includes a few callbacks to iconic horror properties that came before it. This story, based on Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, not only plays up bold significant colors of red and green but also relies heavily on intense music throughout. Longtime Ryan Murphy collaborator Mac Quayle took the reins for this project, and if you thought some of the music sounds familiar, there's a reason.
Right off the bat, Ratched takes inspiration from the film Cape Fear specifically when it comes to the score. Rosanne Tan edited some of the most significant episodes of the final season of “Mr. Robot,” including the premiere, the dialogue-free fifth episode and Episode 8, where Elliot (Rami Malek) finds his father’s key. Tan joined for Season 3 of the series, having previously been a major fan and she knew it was going to be a major season going into the fourth. “I was excited, nervous, I think all the feelings,” Tan says in an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby. “Even before reading the script I just knew Sam [Esmail] and the writers would be creating something amazing for all of us to come back to.” Watch the exclusive interview with Tan above.

Mr. Robot composer Mac Quayle won an Emmy for his work on the first season of Sam Esmail‘s acclaimed USA hacker series, and his work has not slowed down since. Quayle’s dark, dissonant, synth-heavy score lends to the oppressive environment of Esmail’s techno-opera about a hacker (Rami Malek) battling an evil corporation and his own personal […]

Benjamin Franklin believed that only two things were certain in life — death and taxes — but longtime Ryan Murphy collaborator and recently elevated president of Ryan Murphy Productions Alexis Martin Woodall begs to differ. It’s all about music and smells in her estimation. “Nobody is ever going to smell the same thing you smell and feel the exact same way. And that’s how music is,” she says. “You hear a song and it puts you in a time and place. I argue that music is important in every show.”
Murphy wouldn’t disagree with Woodall on that score — they’re like a old married couple. And when it comes to a mutual love of music, they might be soulmates.
Fittingly, Woodall’s collaborations with Murphy have been hallmarked by a strong musical presence. Friday marks the premiere of the first product of Murphy’s record-breaking development deal with Netflix,...

Will “American Horror Story” return to the Emmy race with its timely installment “Cult”? The seventh season of the Ryan Murphy-produced anthology series took the most horrifying event of the 21st century — the election of Donald Trump — and turned it into spine-tingling fun. Gold Derby recently spoke with stars Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, as well as composer Mac Quayle about their work on the politically and psychologically charged season. After sweeping the Emmys in 2016 for its first season, “The People v. O.J. When you think of police procedurals on TV, you don’t always think “Emmy.” But that could all change this year thanks to Angela Bassett‘s performance as police officer Athena Grant on Fox’s “9-1-1.” The veteran actress received her fourth career Emmy nomination last year for her guest turn on “Master of None” after previously competing for “The Rosa Parks Story” (2002), “American Horror Story: Coven” (2014) and “American Horror Story: Freak Show” (2015). Will this Emmy favorite now earn a Best Drama Actress bid for playing Athena on Ryan Murphy‘s new series?

Music is one of the final elements added to a film or television show, and for the four panelists on Gold Derby’s Meet the Btl Experts: Music panel, they all had various starting points when it came time to craft the sound of their projects.
As a co-producer as well on her series, music supervisor Lyah Beth LeFlore (“Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.”) got her hands on scripts and outlines in advance, which helped her visually map out where she wanted to incorporate music. “I love being able to get the script or get the outline and really be able to sit with the characters and sit with the scene and pick from there,” she said during the Q&A, moderated by this author (watch above).

When Lyah Beth LeFlore joined USA’s anthology series “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.” as a co-producer and music supervisor, she anticipated one big obstacle: not getting the rights to their music. The estates of both rappers are famously restrictive when it comes to licensing their songs, but LeFlore, who came up in the ‘90s hip-hop scene and knew the rappers personally, already had a plan to work around that.
“Having known and watched their relationship as friends, I didn’t expect to be able to get the music and sort of had the foresight to say, ‘Ok, if we can’t get it, and out of respect for the estates, what do I do?’” LeFlore said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Music panel, moderated by this author (watch above). “And I knew that it had to have an authentic sound, it had to connect to their legacies,...

For the second season of Netflix’s hit series “13 Reasons Why,” composer Brendan “Eskmo” Angelides wanted to up the ante a bit. Season 1’s score had a gentle piano motif, but Season 2’s music palette features a throbbing, drum-based pulse, capturing the dread and threat of the “Who’s leaving these Polaroids?” mystery. And the genesis for that sound was none other than a member of Genesis.
“Peter Gabriel was a big inspiration in terms of the drums,” Angelides said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Music panel, moderated by this author (watch above). “There’s like chords on all the drums and everything. It was having essentially a general idea of, ‘Ok, it’s Round 2, up the ante, make it a bit more intense.’ And the idea of the Polaroids having a particular kind of energy to them … something that would pull you into it a bit,...

Ryan Murphy is one of the busiest people in Hollywood and his composer is just as prolific. Since 2014, Mac Quayle has been Murphy’s go-to guy for hypnotic, absorbing scores for his programs. He’s worked on every “American Horror Story” season since “Freak Show,” both seasons of “American Crime Story,” “The Normal Heart,” “Scream Queens,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “9-1-1” and the just-premiered “Pose.”
“Fortunately it’s never more than three at a time and usually less,” Quayle said during Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: Music panel, moderated by this author (watch above). When he is working on multiple shows at once, Quayle “tries to keep them separate.” “It’s like I put these walls up in between the shows, starting with the sounds.”
Currently, Quayle is just working on one show, which “is really, really nice,” he said. “It’s kind of gentle. I have some help.

Music often provides the finishing touch for a limited series or TV movie, and this year’s crop contains a diverse range of sounds that enhance the stories.
Contemporary composer and arranger Nico Muhly, who moonlights in film, wrote his first TV score for Starz’s “Howards End,” based on the E.M. Forster novel. True to his classical roots, it has a chamber-music ambiance that emphasizes the story’s intimacy.
The biggest challenge, explains Muhly, involved the Schlegel sisters, played by Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard: “They are slightly Bohemian, independent and learned, but there was a need to add a sense of yearning and poignancy to them,” he says. “I wanted the Wilcoxes’ music to be always slightly haunted by the music belonging to the first Mrs. Wilcox. Bast’s music was jagged and angular — stuck in an obsessive set of patterns.”

Of all the characters in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Donatella Versace doesn’t have the most screentime. But like Penelope Cruz’s distinct portrayal, the score of the FX series lets her linger throughout the story.
“Versace” composer Mac Quayle has effectively used digital scores in other TV series, most notably in “Mr. Robot.” For one of the central Donatella compositions, Quayle makes a haunting mix of electronic hums, distant keys and a surprising crescendo to some haunting strings. It’s a blending of digital and tactile that mirrors the way the rest of this season’s unconventional timeline blends past and future.
“After I had written the score to the first episode I realized the music was essentially Giorgio Moroder scoring ‘Silence of the Lambs’ in an Italian Villa,” Quayle told IndieWire. “From the moment we meet Donatella Versace she is grieving the loss of her brother,...

But being normal isn’t easy for anyone, especially as he becomes aware that Mr. Robot isn’t gone — he’s just losing control of the moments when that aspect of himself arises.
Whiterose continues to lurk in the shadows, planning for Stage 2 — which will now coincide with a United Nations vote on annexing the Congo, though Phillip Price has his own political conditions. Meanwhile, Joanna Wellick’s plan to clear Tyrell’s name seems to work. Too bad that immediately afterward, her now-former lover Derek confronts her and her driver on the street, and she dies...

Over the course of “Mr. Robot’s” run, composer Mac Quayle has done a pretty effective job creating an eerie and ethereal (etheerieal?) backdrop to one man’s psychological self-sabotage. The ongoing trials of Elliot Alderson have been underscored by electronic-heavy instrumentals, highlighting the character in moments of triumph and moments of despair (more on that later).
As good as Quayle has been, the series has also benefited from a finely curated set of musical moments, with some of the most memorable “Mr. Robot” sequences bolstered by an impeccable soundtrack selected by music supervisors Amie Bond and Charlie Haggard. Some of these have been the numerous string of classical favorites used to set up Tyrell Wellick in various stages of upper-class crises. Others have drawn on electronic music icons that have influenced the show in more ways than one.

The Upside Down of “Stranger Things” became an apt metaphor for this divisive year, and, maybe not so strangely, “Stranger Things,” along with several other Best Drama Emmy contenders, offered unifying themes to combat the forces of oppression, hate, and turmoil.
These included “Westworld,” “The Crown,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Feud: Bette and Joan,” and “Big Little Lies.” And, not surprisingly, they all offered stellar craftsmanship in support of their unifying themes.
“The Crown”

Ascending queens Elizabeth (“The Crown”) and Victoria (“Victoria”) face off in the Emmy race for Series Original Dramatic Score, while old Hollywood (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) counters Russian classicism (“Fargo”) for Limited Series, Movie, or Special Dramatic Score.
Meanwhile, political (“House of Cards,” Taboo”) and survival overtones (“Planet Earth II” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events”) clash in the Series category, as well as war (“Five Came Back,” “The White Helmets,” “Suite Française”) and culture (“O.J.: Made in America”) in the other category.
Not surprisingly, the odds are with Rupert Gregson-Williams (“The Crown”) and last year’s “Mr. Robot” winner, Mac Quayle (“Feud”), for their respective retro scores. While Williams reached for orchestral nobility, Quayle went for more orchestral glam.
