Donald Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said that her client would be like the late South African President Nelson Mandela if he gets jailed for violating the gag order in his New York hush money trial.
On April 1, Judge Juan Merchan expanded a gag order in the case, thereby keeping Trump from constantly attacking his daughter, Loren Merchan.
Initially, the gag order blocked the former president from making public statements about witnesses, other prosecutors, court staff and their family members if they were “made with the intent to interfere with” this case materially.
In a court filing on April 16, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office asked Judge Merchan to hold Trump in contempt for frequently using social media to disparage two of the witnesses in his hush money trial – ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and former porn star Stormy Daniels.

Concern about the fact that Donald Trump must post a $450 million-plus bond by Monday — and where he might get that money — prompted a curious debate with the ex-president’s lawyer on Fox News on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day on The View, Joy Behar worried about the risks posed by a financially-desperate Trump.
“I mentioned Saudi Arabia and Russia, they have motivation to give him money because then they will own him,” said Behar.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said that he will not endorse Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid.
“It should come as no surprise that I will not be endorsing Donald Trump this year,” Pence told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum earlier today.
“As I have watched his candidacy unfold, I have seen him walking away from our commitment to confront the national debt. I’ve seen him start to shy away from a commitment to the sanctity of human life. And this last week his reversal on getting tough on China and supporting our administration’s effort to force a sale of ByteDance TikTok.”
He added, “Donald Trump is pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed on during our four years. That is why I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump in this campaign.”

Donald Trump’s vice president won’t be endorsing the former president’s 2024 run to reclaim the White House. On Friday, Mike Pence told Fox News that it should be “no surprise” that he’s not backing the man who said he should be hanged on Jan. 6, 2021.

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

The big bipartisan border reform deal is all but dead, thanks to Maga Republicans obeying Donald Trump’s wishes to kill it. The legislation delivered many of the immigration measures conservatives have long wanted, but the former president and his allies in Congress worry progress on the issue would make Joe Biden look good ahead of the presidential election. Therefore, addressing what Republicans say is the most pressing crisis facing America today is going to have to wait until a later date when the party feels it’s more politically expedient.

The morning before the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary, the atmosphere at the media center of gravity in Manchester was busy but hardly frenetic — muted may be more like it.
At the Doubletree Hotel, there was the typical gathering of reporters in the lobby lounge and the appearance of attention-starved long-shot candidates, but the media footprint is smaller than it was four years ago. A group of a dozen of so twentysomethings gathered along a long table, clattering away on their laptops, but they were from a college class, not some news outlet.
On Tuesday, the cable and broadcast networks again will provide a swarm of coverage of the final hours of the race, then feverishly report on the initial exit polls and finish by micro-analyzing the results.
The question is whether viewers will show up.

Media-wise, the 2024 presidential election crosses the official starting line with debate season, and this cycle the contenders on the Republican side, including a multiple-indicted former Potus, are looking to beat Democrat Joe Biden and take over the White House. But first they have to take on one another.
For the candidates, debates are a way to score points against a rival, stand out from the field or define a campaign that’s heretofore been rudderless.

Front-runner Trump has opted out of all the debates so far. In August, he instead decided to hold forth with Tucker Carlson in a more friendly pre-taped interview. That debate drew 12.8 million viewers on Fox News. Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...

Though Margot Robbie’s delightful tributes to Barbie on the red carpet have become a fun staple this season, seeing a possible homage to Barbie on a presidential debate stage this year was definitely a surprise. During the final, pivotal primary debate on Jan. 10, five days before the Republican Iowa Caucus, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley sported a dress that could be described as blush pink topped off with pearls. That wasn’t an accident and she could just ride the Barbie wave all the way to the White House.

Mere hours after Donald Trump received the judicial equivalent of a spanking in the courtroom at New York City fraud trial, Biden’s courtroom appearance on the other side of the country had Fnc in a lather.
In the federal courthouse in downtown LA, Biden entered a not-guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarci. The hearing, Biden’s first appearance in the case, lasted about 30 minutes with Trump-appointed judge Scarci making sure Biden was aware a warrant for his arrest could be issued if he failed to comply with any conditions of release like drinking or having a gun.
“Do you understand?” the judge asked.
“I do, your honor,” Biden responded, with his attorneys by his side.

Tied to Saturday’s third anniversary of the attack on the Capitol, the speech also was intended to be a reminder of what happened that day, amid polling showing significant numbers of Republicans embracing conspiracy theories or diminishing what actually happened then.

Can “King Charles” rule in the heady, competitive world of cable news? CNN will soon find out.

A former Fox News Capitol Hill reporter and producer sued the network, claiming that he was wrongfully terminated for speaking out about the network’s false coverage of the 2020 presidential election and the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
In a lawsuit filed in D.C. Superior Court, Jason Donner alleged that he was fired after complaining, in writing, to Fox News’ human resources department and to his supervisor, NuNu Japaridze. In the complaint, sent to them on May 24, 2022, Donner wrote that “Fox News has not supported its journalists since the January 6th attack on the Capitol. By allowing highly paid hosts and contributors to make factually false statements about that day is not only demoralizing but creates a hostile work environment. I barely watch our programming or read our website anymore because it’s hard to stomach these untruths being aired and written.” Donner had previously complained to supervisors about the Capitol siege,...

Update: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israeli soldiers are now in the Gaza strip, in what he characterized as the next stage of the war with Hamas.
Appearing at a press conference that was covered on major news networks, Netanyahu said that ground forces have gone into Gaza, entering the terrritory through the “gates of evil,” with the objective of eradicating Hamas’ military capabilities and to retrieve hostages.
“Our brave troops and combatants are now in Gaza or around Gaza,” he said.
He also pushed back against accusations that Israel was committing war crimes, saying that it was Hamas that was using people as “human shields,” per the BBC. He said that Israeli Defense Forces were taking steps to try to protect civilians.
Netanyahu said that the Israeli troops “are deployed all over’ the Gaza strip.
He said that they decided to expand operations in Gaza in a “very educated” manner.

At Fox Business Network — for one night, at least — it’s all a lot more than the economy.
When the cable outlet televises a Republican primary debate on September 27, many of the strategies it used the last time it did so are going out the window. Gone are moderators Neil Cavuto and Maria Bartiromo, who have experience with such events. In their place: First-timers Stuart Varney and Dana Perino, alongside Univision’s Ilia Calderón. The network will also move away from its efforts to focus largely on business and economic topics, as it has in the past.
Executives at Fox News Media have begun contemplating when to take more momentous news coverage to a broader audience, says Jay Wallace, president and executive editor of Fox News Media, in an interview. “There are very few events out there anymore,” Wallace says. “People do care about politics,” he adds. “It is a...

Oliver Anthony’s viral populist track “Rich Men North of Richmond” remains the number one song in the country, topping Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for the second week in a row, the publication announced on Monday.
Like last week, the song saw particularly high digital download sales that helped bolster its chart placing, with 117,000 sales for the week ending August 24th according to data service Luminate, which powers the Billboard chart. The song has been atop the iTunes sales chart for weeks, with four other of his songs cracking the top 25 as of Monday.

Country-folk singer Oliver Anthony is denouncing politicians, namely conservatives, and those trying to make his hit song “Rich Men North of Richmond” the new right-wing anthem.
In a 10-minute video shared on YouTube on Friday, the musician said, “The one thing that has bothered me is seeing people wrap politics up in this. I’m disappointed to see [it]. Like, it’s aggravating seeing people on conservative news try to identify with me, like I’m one of them.”
Anthony’s comments come after the GOP’s first debate of the primary season in Milwaukee on Wednesday. A clip of the song was played at the beginning of the debate and moderator Martha MacCallum also referenced the song in the first questions, asking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, “Why is this song striking such a nerve in this country right now?” In his response, DeSantis took aim at President Joe Biden, Congress...

The singer-songwriter responsible for the unexpected summer hit Rich Men North Of Richmond released a video statement on Friday that lamented the way that it has been “weaponized” by political figures, including the way that GOP candidates addressed it at Wednesday night’s presidential debate.
“It was funny seeing it at the presidential debate, because it’s like I wrote that song about those people. So for them to have to sit there and listen to that, that cracks me up,” said the singer-songwriter, Oliver Anthony. “It was funny kind of seeing the response to it.”
At the debate, Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum noted that Anthony’s song speaks “of alienation, of deep frustration with the state of government and of this country. Washington DC is about 100 miles north of Richmond.” The song was essentially a jumping off point for the candidates to deliver introductory messages, including attacks on President Joe Biden.

Just two weeks ago, almost no one had ever heard of Oliver Anthony. Then, the Virginia-based country singer-songwriter, whose real name is Christopher Anthony Lunsford, went wildly viral with the instant Number One hit “Rich Men North of Richmond,” a raw, solo-acoustic, undeniably catchy track that combined righteous populist complaints about inflation and taxes with nasty swipes at welfare recipients. (He later clarified that he didn’t intend to attack the poor.)
As Rolling Stone pointed out early on, his initial rise was buoyed by heavy, curiously simultaneous support from conservative politicians and media figures.

The Republicans don’t need Donald Trump to get people to pay attention to their causes.
Approximately 12.8 million viewers tuned in Wednesday night to see a telecast of the first Republican primary debate in the race for the 2024 presidential election, according to data from Nielsen, with 11.1 million viewers watching the event on Fox News Channel and another 1.7 million viewing it on sister outlet Fox Business Network. Eight candidates took part.
The attention came even though Trump, the former president who has a commanding lead in Republican polls, decided to take part in a pre-taped and meandering interview with former Fox News opinion host Tucker Carlson that was streamed on X, the social-media venue once known as Twitter.
To be sure, the TV figures represent a decline in attention from the 24 million viewers –still a record — who tuned in to Fox News in 2016 for the first Republican featuring Trump. And the...

With the frontrunner sitting things out, the first debate of the 2024 Republican presidential primary still drew a big audience for Fox News.
Wednesday’s debate in Milwaukee, which featured eight candidates looking to challenge former president Donald Trump — who decided not to take part — averaged about 13 million viewers across platforms, according to Nielsen ratings and Fox’s own streaming measurement. While that’s way below the 24 million who tuned into the first GOP primary debate in 2015, when Trump’s campaign was just taking off, it did beat the 12.5 million for Fox News’ last primary debate without Trump. That one took place in January 2016 in Iowa.
Fox News averaged 11.09 million viewers for the two-hour debate, moderated by Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier. Fox Business had 1.7 million viewers, while streaming on Fox Nation and Fox News Digital made up the remaining 200,000 or so.

Fox News drew more than 12.8 million viewers in its coverage of the first 2024 Republican presidential debate on Wednesday.
The figure is the combined audience for Fox News and Fox Business Network, per Nielsen.
The number also is well above expectations given the absence of Donald Trump from the stage. Some analysts had predicted an audience in the range of 5 million.
In the adults 25-54 demo, Fox News drew 2.82 million. The debate drew a total viewership of 11.1 million on Fox News and 1.7 million on Fox Business. Fox News Digital also posted an average minute audience of nearly 200,000, the highest day of minutes watched on the Fox News livestream this year.
Trump counter-programmed the debate, appearing in a pre-taped sit down interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Trump touted that interview as drawing more than 100 million views; that figure had risen to 235 million by Thursday afternoon. But it is not an apples-to-apples comparison of ratings.

It was not until the Republican presidential debate entered its second hour that Fox News anchor Bret Baier addressed “the elephant not in this room” – the indictments of no-show Donald Trump.
“If former President Trump is convicted in a court of law, would you still support him as your party’s choice?”
When six of the eight candidates raised their hands — some with more hesitation than the others — it was undoubtedly one of the standout moments of the initial 2024 event.
No other question like that has ever been asked at a presidential debate because no contender, much less the front runner, has faced such an avalanche of criminal allegations. Surprising as it is that so many still pledged to support him, even though Trump hasn’t even signed a pledge to support them, speaks to the hold that he has on the party.

When debate moderator Bret Baier asked a stage of 2024 Republican presidential hopefuls to raise their hands if they would support their absent rival Donald Trump’s nomination even if he was convicted in one of the many court cases he’s currently facing, all but two of the eight candidates present raised their hands.
What followed was a bashing fest between the candidates outwardly opposed to Trump’s reelection, and those tripping over themselves to prove their loyalty to the former president — with heavy audience participation and dose of moderation chaos.

Jumping the gun on Fox News’ GOP debate tonight, Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson made it clear to Rupert Murdoch that revenge is a dish best served online. Running like an incumbent with no desire to share the spotlight with vice president wannabes, Trump easily dominated the debate by never showing up.
“It’s debate night, but we’re not in Milwaukee,” Carlson proclaimed at the top of the video with a sour-looking Trump by his side.
“We’re doing this interview, but we’ll get bigger ratings using this crazy forum that you’re using than probably the debate,” said the former Potus and leading candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination to the former Fnc Golden Boy during their pre-recorded chat that debuted on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter at 5:55 p.m. Pt, five minutes before the live debate began.

Update: Six of the eight contenders on the stage indicated that they would still support Donald Trump if he is the GOP nominee even if he is convicted.
But the cameras caught Ron DeSantis as he looked around at his rivals before raising his hand.
Moderator Bret Baier had asked if Trump “is convicted in a court of law, would you still support him as your party’s choice?”
The only two who did not were Asa Hutchinson and Chris Christie. And the latter looked as if he had raised his hand, but told Baier that he was waving a sign of disapproval.
“Here’s the bottom line: Someone has got to stop normalizing this conduct. Whether or not you believe the criminal charges are right or wrong, the conduct is beneath the office of president of the United States,” Christie said. His remarks drew some cheers and boos.

Update: Donald Trump confirmed that he sat down with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for an interview that will post at the exact time as the Republican presidential debate.
Trump, who is skipping the debate, wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, “My Interview With Tucker Carlson Will Be Aired Tonight At 9:00 P.M. “Sparks Will Fly.” Enjoy!”
His absence likely will be brought up at the debate, especially since Chris Christie will be on stage. The former New Jersey governor has staked much of his campaign on criticizing Trump.

Donald Trump says that he won’t participate in the first Republican debate, but seven of his rivals will be on the debate stage.
The Republican National Committee confirmed the list of those who qualified for the Wednesday event, to be telecast on Fox News and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum.
Those who will be in the debate include Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, former Un ambassador Nikki Haley, former pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy, Sen. Tim Scott (R-Sc), former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
To qualify, candidates must have a minimum of 40,000 donors and to have reached at least 1% in three national polls or a combination of two national and two early-state polls. Candidates also need to sign a pledge vowing to support the eventual nominee. Trump met the donor and polling criteria,...

When Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum moderate Wednesday night’s Republican primary debate, they won’t be running for office. But they will be at the forefront of a very important popularity contest.
The Fox News duo will kick off a coverage cycle that every TV-news executive hopes will reverse some of the recent trends of the medium, which has contended, like many other TV formats, with downturns in viewership and advertising dollars. The debate, says Baier, ought to be lively, and he and MacCallum — typically the faces of Fox News in all matters pertaining to elections — will have to be on their guard.
“I think the bottom line is that some candidates on this stage want to walk away with a moment that gets played over and over again,” he says.
The people who run Fox News — and its rivals — can only hope. TV-news outlets snare some of their biggest audiences during election coverage.
