- Conrad promised to serve only 1 term in the U.S. Senate and kept his promise, opting not to run for reelection in 1992. Late that same year, however, North Dakota's senior Senator, Democrat Quentin Burdick, died and Conrad was persuaded to run for Burdick's unexpired term, which he eventually won.
