The Voice’s 26th season is going to the Dogg.
NBC announced at its upfront presentation Monday that Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé will join the singing competition as coaches for its 26th season in the fall. Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani will return to the show, McEntire for her third edition of the show and Stefani for her eighth.
Both Snoop and Bublé have appeared on The Voice in the past: Snoop Dogg served as a “mega mentor” in the show’s 20th season, and Bublé was an adviser to Blake Shelton’s team back in season three.
McEntire’s return means that she’ll bookend NBC’s weeknight schedule in the fall, with The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays and Happy’s Place, a comedy series starring the multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM award winner, set for Fridays.
The Voice is one of several collaborations between NBCUniversal and Snoop Dogg in the near future.

Despite recent comments from Iger advocating for prioritizing quality over quantity and with only ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ slated for release in 2024, Marvel Studios shows no signs of slowing down.
With the strike resolved, projects that have long been stuck in development limbo are finally moving forward, and others must be expedited to maintain coherence in the MCU timeline. It’s time for these projects to advance in production.
One long-awaited project is Don Cheadle’s ‘Armor Wars.’ Initially conceived as a movie following the comic storyline of the same name, it was intended as a sequel to ‘Secret Invasion’ (released last year) and ‘Ironheart’ (release date currently unknown). Don Cheadle himself confirmed back in 2011 that a War Machine film was in the works, with Joe Robert Cole hired as the writer. Now, according to NexusPoint News, filming for the project is set to commence in January 2025 in the United Kingdom and Atlanta.

Marvel Studios has a lineup of projects slated for release or development in the coming years. While progress on most of these projects is clear, one movie has been stuck in development limbo for quite some time, with only sporadic updates emerging. We’re referring to the War Machine movie, ‘Armor Wars.’
‘Armor Wars’ was initially envisioned as a film based on the comic storyline of the same name. It was intended to serve as a sequel to ‘Secret Invasion’ (released last year) and ‘Ironheart’ (whose release date is currently unknown). As far back as 2011, Don Cheadle confirmed the development of a War Machine film, with Joe Robert Cole brought on board to pen the script.
Nine years later, during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was revealed that the ‘Armor Wars’ TV series is in the works for Disney+, with Don Cheadle reprising his role as James Rhodes. In 2021, Cheadle...

We all love Captain America and Iron Man. Those shining icons made the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the powerhouse franchise that we know, and that at least some of us continue to love. The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

As the WGA strike continues to unfold, one of the key issues at its center has to do with artificial intelligence. While AI may be a relatively new concern for many in Hollywood, it’s old hat to Tom Rob Smith and Joe Robert Cole, two of the executive producers behind FX’s upcoming drama “Class of ’09.” Though their new series examines the dangers of law enforcement relying too heavily on AI, Smith isn’t concerned that AI in its modern form will fully replace writers.
“I’m less worried than other people are right now on the story creation, but I could be just naive about that right now,” Smith, who previously served as an executive producer and writer for “The Assassination of Gianna Versace: American Crime Story,” told TheWrap.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best original film screenplay of 2023 at the Writers Guild Awards, which were held on Sunday evening in Los Angeles and New York.
The win gives “Everything Everywhere” a sweep of the four major Hollywood guild awards: the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild, where it won the ensemble cast award and set a record with four wins in the five SAG categories.
The win made the freewheeling indie film only the fifth film to sweep the major guilds since the SAG awards first handed out the ensemble award in 1995. The first four were “American Beauty,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Argo,” all of which went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
If “Everything Everywhere” was a strong favorite to win that award going into this weekend, it will now be a commanding one heading into Oscar week.

Writers had to share the spotlight with independent filmmakers and sound designers last night, but they’ll have it all to themselves tonight when the 75th annual Writers Guild of America awards are officially unveiled.
The WGA Awards took place in concurrent ceremonies tonight at New York’s Edison Ballroom and Los Angeles’ Fairmont Century Plaza. The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) labor unions represent writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news.
Michelle Buteau was hosting from New York and said she felt “luckier than Pete Davidson’s dick” to be presiding over the ceremony. Her raucous monologue included lines such as, “Tom Cruise is more of a ‘Bottom Gun’ than a ‘Top Gun.'”

Sunday’s 75th Writers Guild of America Awards will conclude the guild season (and a four-guild kudos weekend). Will they portend good things to come at the Oscars for the winners?
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” written by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, and “Women Talking,” written by Sarah Polley, are projected to win the Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay prizes, respectively. The caveat, of course, is that neither is facing its top Oscar competition at WGA due to the guild’s eligibility requirements. Martin McDonagh‘s “The Banshees of Inisherin” script, which won the Golden Globe and BAFTA, is Awol in original, as is Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” And BAFTA’s adapted screenplay champ “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Edward Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, is ineligible, along with Oscar nominee “Living.”

The 75th Writers Guild of America Awards took place Sunday night, wrapping up the final weekend of guild awards before the Oscars next week. Both screenplay categories are tight at the Oscars, but not all the contenders were present at WGA.
That’s because the guild’s strict rules disqualify a number of scripts every year. This year, ineligible original screenplays include Oscar nominees “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness,” as well as “Aftersun,” “Rrr” and “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.” Oscar nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” are among the ineligible adapted scripts, which also include “The Whale,” “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and “The Quiet Girl.”

Rebecca Lenkiewicz will be this year’s recipient of the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award in recognition of her adapted screenplay for She Said, the Universal film about the New York Times reporters who broke the story that exposed disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein. The guild said Thursday that she will be honored at the WGA Awards’ Los Angeles ceremony March 5 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.
Lenkiewicz is also nominated this year for a WGA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. She Said is based on the investigation by Times reporters Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Rebecca Corbett, and the book by Kantor and Twohey that helped propel the #MeToo movement by uncovering the system that had enabled years of sexual assault by some of the most powerful men in Hollywood.

February 16 marked the fifth anniversary of Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole’s “Black Panther.” Marvel Studios’ first Black-led superhero flick, starring the late Chadwick Boseman as the king of Wakanda, was seen as a watershed moment for Hollywood representation. With all the chatter about Marvel and DC films prioritizing diversity and inclusivity as a step forward for the caped sub-genre, the success of “Black Panther” was less a step forward and more a return to what was once the status quo generations prior.
Comic book and/or superhero movies fronted by Black actors, like the “Blade” trilogy and “Men in Black” series, once kept comic book features alive, only for Hollywood to declare them essentially whites-only as “Spider-Man” turned the genre into A-level tentpole IP.
Will Smith in “Men in Black 3”

Greetings, friends. If you're someone who returns to this sporadic column seeking Blu-ray info, I want to thank you. You're swell! And as always, I will continue to bring you the latest in Blu-rays. This week has one of the best movies of 2021: Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." But wait, there's more! There's a 4K release of Hype Williams' amazing cult classic "Belly," Disney's recent animated flick "Strange World," Elvis fighting a mummy in "Bubba Ho-Tep," and of course, the "Black Panther" sequel "Wakanda Forever." That's a fine line-up if you ask me.
The Fabelmans
Steven Spielberg has been talking about making a movie about his childhood for decades, and he finally got around to it with "The Fabelmans." But this isn't hagiography, or Spielberg talking about what a talented kid he was (even though he was). Instead, this is Spielberg grappling with what is arguably the most persistent...

Special honorary award winners were Angela Bassett (Sidney Poitier Trailblazer Award), Effie T. Brown (Vanguard Award), Debra Martin Chase (Oscar Micheaux Impact Award) and Kerry Washington (Ruby Dee Humanitarian Award).

Don’t look for four of the 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay (the original scripts for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Triangle of Sadness” plus the adaptations of “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Living” ) on the list of 2023 Writers Guild of America Awards nominations announced January 25. They didn’t qualify for consideration under the guild’s guidelines or those of its international partners.
The Original Screenplay frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is in contention for this guild award as are two of its Oscar rivals: “The Fabelmans” and “Tar.” The WGA race is rounded out by the scripts for “The Menu” and “Nope.”
Likewise our predicted winner for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Women Talking” — is vying for this award too. It faces off against a pair of Oscar nominees — “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — plus “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “She Said....

The Writers Guild of America, East (Wgae) and Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) announced the outstanding screenplay nominees for their annual Writers Guild Awards just one day after the 2023 Oscars nominations came out. Given the organization’s strict eligibility rules, the WGA has created interesting differences between its choices and the Academy’s this year.
Looking at the five WGA Original Screenplay nominees, only three were nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar: “The Fabelmans,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “TÁR.” The difference could easily be chalked up to the fact that Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” were not eligible, as they were not written under the WGA’s Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of an international affiliate Guild.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is coming to Disney+ on February 1, but you can revisit it before then in its written form. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole's screenplay has now been released online via Deadline's "Read the Screenplay" series.
This version of the script is dated May 8, 2021, a few weeks before "Wakanda Forever" began filming. The screenplay has been pared down to match what ended up on screen, with some lines crossed out and deleted scenes omitted, but it's still an insightful read that offers unspoken character details in between the dialogue.
It's also interesting to see where choices were made to edit out certain lines in order to keep the story streamlined and stay true to the characters. For example, in the original script Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) contacts Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) after Shuri (Letitia Wright) is kidnapped and demands to know why they were attacked. In...

An image sticks with me from this season’s many female-driven contenders — that of Danielle Deadwyler’s Mrs. Mamie Till-Mobley. At the end of “Till,” she is planted onstage at a rally. With erect posture, she wears her Sunday best, red lips and finest necklace, following the racially motivated murder of her only son, Emmett, in the summer of 1955. Mrs. Till has transformed from private mother to public activist. In the wake of an impossible grief, assaulted by a country beset by racial prejudice, she has walked into her power as a Black woman, however dangerous that might yet be.

2022 featured one of the most epic-sized stories detailing how an aquatic-dwelling culture of blue-skinned Indigenous people comes into direct conflict with a whole host of technologically advanced land-lubbers who underestimate their enemy at every turn. The climactic battle between two opposing armies takes place in the middle of the ocean. There's even a strong recurring theme about family, grief, and environmentalism. No, as you hopefully have guessed by now, James Cameron wasn't the first filmmaker to bring his obsession with all things water-related to the big screen last year.

Director Ryan Coogler has revealed the story behind his original script for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. The ‘Black Panther’ director, 36, said that he and fellow screenwriter Joe Robert Cole had planned to centre the sequel on Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa struggling to learn how to be a father, before Boseman’s death to colon cancer in 2020, reports People magazine.
He made the revelation in The New York Times interview. “It was going to be a father-son story from the perspective of a father, because the first movie had been a father-son story from the perspective of the sons,” Coogler said, noting that they had shared the script with Boseman in 2020.
According to People, Coogler said that they had to work around the idea of the “blip” which took place in Avengers: Infinity War and led to T’Challa and several other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters disappearing for five years.

Writer/director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole sat down for an interview with “The New York Times” where they discussed the initial plans for what would become “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” In it, they revealed that the initial pitch was a post-Blip story featuring T’Challa (to be played by the late Chadwick Boseman) returning after a five-year absence and reconnecting with a son who had little-to-no memory of his biological father.
“T’Challa was a dad who’d had this forced five-year absence from his son’s life. You realize that he doesn’t know his dad was the Black Panther. He’s never met him, and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) is remarried to a Haitian dude. Then, we cut to reality and it’s the night that everybody comes back from the Blip. You see T’Challa meet the kid for the first time.”

Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole have revealed more details about their original plans for the Black Panther sequel, which they began writing before star Chadwick Boseman’s death in August 2020.
The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever screenwriters spoke with The New York Times for an interview published on Friday, in which they discussed the personal and creative impact of losing Boseman ahead of the Marvel sequel’s release.
Coogler, who also directed both films, has previously spoken about how the “blip” event that occurred between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame — which essentially wiped out half of every living thing across space — would play a key role in Boseman’s second turn as Wakanda’s King T’Challa. The superhero and leader of one of the world’s most powerful nations was among those who had disappeared during the five years between both films,...

When cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw was initially approached to join “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” she was already familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Arkapaw served as the cinematographer on the first season of the Marvel series “Loki” and scored one of the acclaimed show’s six Emmy Award nominations for her work. But “Wakanda Forever” presented a much greater challenge for Arkawpaw and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler: a large-scale Marvel sequel that also reckoned with the death of star Chadwick Boseman and included intimate moments of mourning and unflinching depictions of grief.
“It was very important to Ryan to kind of have this fog or texture of grief that would be a throughline in the visuals and would be felt,” Arkapaw tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I think it’s always important to listen to your director emotionally, and see what he or she wants to bring to the table,...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus can extend her own SAG Awards record with a ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ win
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced a series of creative highs (“WandaVision”) and narrative lows (2021’s “Eternals”) throughout Phase Four, but the “Black Panther” (2018) sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” has to be considered a triumph.
Ryan Coogler, who directed the movie and co-wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole, had the unfortunate and unenviable task of resetting the popular franchise in the wake of the untimely death of star Chadwick Boseman in 2020. The result is a film that is probably too long (it is not alone), but one that is also deeply moving as it honors Boseman’s T’Challa and sets up his sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright), to be the new Black Panther. Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett give strong, emotional performances as Okoye and Queen Ramonda, respectively, as Wakanda faces a threat from Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the ancient underwater civilization of Talokan. To cut through the overall heaviness of the narrative,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for the ending and mid-credits scene in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” currently playing in theaters.
Angela Bassett, who is generating Oscar buzz for her performance as Ramonda in Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” is sharing her feelings about her character’s death. Her tone was good-natured during the discussion, but the sentiment was clear that she wasn’t happy when she first read the script by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole.
During an interview with Variety for an upcoming episode of the Awards Circuit Podcast, Bassett reveals for the first time that she shot a scene with the young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun, who plays a character revealed to be the son of T’Challa (the late Chadwick Boseman) and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). However, Bassett’s scene with the young actor was cut from the final version of the film.
