The typical season of “Fargo” starts at a simmer. Thanks to the famous opening disclaimer (“at the request of the survivors”; “out of respect for the dead”), borrowed wholesale from the Coen Brothers’ original masterpiece, the audience knows violence is in the offing. In translating “Fargo” into an anthology series, an interpretive exercise that now spans five different installments over nearly a decade, creator Noah Hawley has stuck to this structure. “Fargo” may hopscotch across time, points of view, and the Greater Midwest, but Hawley uses a loose and shifting set of signatures to identify the multiplying parts of the franchise as part of a greater whole — the pace heretofore among them.
The latest “Fargo” story, however, starts in media res. We’re in suburban Minnesota circa 2019, and a local school board meeting has descended into chaos. This isn’t a record-scratch-freeze-frame situation, either; in the six episodes provided to critics in advance,...

Joe Arpaio, the former sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County, lost a race for mayor of Fountain Hills on Wednesday. Arpaio’s defeat at the hands of two-term incumbent Ginny Dickey marks the fourth consecutive loss at the polls for the Trump-loving 90-year-old, dating back to his ouster as sheriff of the state’s most populous county in 2016, in part due to his abusive immigration tactics that have resulted in at least 100 million in taxpayer-funded legal bills.
Arpaio has yet to concede the race, though, and may pursue a legal challenge,...

When Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who Is America?” hit the airwaves in 2018, it quickly became the talk of the town in political circles. The Showtime series featured the comedian using a variety of fake personas to trick high-profile figures, ranging from notable politicians to famous internet trolls, into sitting down for embarrassing interviews. While the format was similar to previous Cohen projects like “Da Ali G Show,” it was recognized for Cohen’s remarkable ability to fool people, especially considering the fact that his fame had increased significantly over the years.
Speaking to Judd Apatow for his latest book “Sicker in the Head: More Conversations About Life and Comedy,” Cohen opened up about some of the enemies that the show made him in Washington. While few were surprised he was able to trick the likes of Oj Simpson and Joe Arpaio, Cohen recalled the story of duping someone who really...

In 2001, Dmx went to Arizona to record his fourth album. By then, he had already become an unlikely superstar, a barking battle rapper turned crossover sensation. He had channeled all the pain of his first three decades on Earth, all the rhymes that had been filling up the pages of his notebooks for years, into three multiplatinum albums. His single “Party Up (Up in Here)” was breaking down the door to a new demographic of fans. Just a few years before, Puff Daddy had said Dmx was unmarketable. He used...

The following includes major Don’t Look Up spoilers.
This was supposed to be a comedy, right? That’s what the marketing and 1960s-inspired opening title cards suggest for Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, and yet one might think the happiest moment in the whole thing is when Leonardo DiCaprio’s Dr. Randall Mindy and Jennifer Lawrence’s PhD candidate Kate Dibiasky sit down to dinner with family, friends, and even a new fiancé, before the comet strikes. At least they’re getting a break from trying to force reality into those people’s thick skulls.
That’s the bleak vibe and pitch black humor at work throughout Don’t Look Up, a passionate, strident, and intentionally abrasive dramedy which takes a page out of Stanley Kubrick and laughs at the end of the world. The film is clearly meant to be a parable about humanity’s inability to face the...

Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black were also among those that made the cut, so to speak. Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal’s La Corriente del Golfo has teamed with Amazon Prime Video on a new issue-driven conversation series “Pan y Circo” (Bread and Circus), which will launch globally on the platform on Friday (Aug. 7).
Using an innovative new format of Luna’s own design, the series seats a group of different personalities with unique perspectives on a common subject around a table for a meal (the “pan”) and discussion (the “circo”). The table-centric model has hints of Facebook’s Jada Pinkett Smith-hosted “Red Table Talk,” though Luna has been developing this series for several years and the differences in the programs are perhaps more pronounced.
In “Pan y Circo” the meal share equal billing with the conversation, and each episode starts in the kitchen where Luna and that dinner’s chef kick off discussions about the topic and soup du jour. After the final course the meal is served,...

No, Joe won't be going home with $300 million.
That's the amount of damages that Joe Arpaio, the controversial former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, demanded in a defamation suit against CNN, Rolling Stone and Huffington Post for getting the details of his legal troubles wrong. But on Thursday, a D.C. federal judge granted the motion to dismiss, ruling that Arpaio had failed to allege facts adding up to a plausible claim of actual malice by the media outlets.

When Showtime broadcast the Emmy-nominated seven-episode series Who Is America, Sacha Baron Cohen’s exploration of conservative ideals he felt were fomented by President Donald Trump led to embarrassing moments for several public servants who, with the slightest provocation, fomented extreme views on guns, immigration, racism and other hot button topics. A few resigned, and others threatened to sue. One byproduct is there were so many, it’s inevitable that some will run for office and look dreadful.
Joe Walsh — the former Illinois congressman-turned conservative radio host who has pledged to run against President Donald Trump in the Republican primary — and Joe Arpaio — the hardliner former Arizona sheriff controversially pardoned by Trump from a federal contempt of court conviction over his hard line anti-immigration stances who now wants to run to regain his post — each had a regrettable Who Is America moment. Though Donald Trump has found ways to subvert most of them, when the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution they made sure to include several checks to the president’s power. In regard to pardons, however, the president’s authority is all but absolute. “The President … shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment,” reads Article II. This means Trump can hand a “Get Out of Jail Free” card to literally anyone convicted of a federal crime, so long as...

Joe Arpaio, the controversial former sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., who earned Donald Trump's first pardon, is many things, but he's not a "convicted felon," as CNN reported, not an "ex-felon," as Rolling Stone described him, and he has never been "sent to prison," as the Huffington Post once wrote in passing in the midst of a story that had not much to do with him. Yes, he was convicted of criminal contempt after violating a judge's orders to stop detaining suspected undocumented immigrants, but it was a misdemeanor, not a felony.

As Showtime prepares its Emmy submissions for 2019, one of its contenders is a bit of an outlier: Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who Is America?”
The seven-episode series, which premiered last July, mixes elements of comedy, satire, sketch, reality, talk and variety — making it the kind of hybrid that could be entered in several categories.
And that’s Showtime’s plan. Although there are unscripted elements to “Who Is America?” (such as the time Baron Cohen got Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio to address the infamous alleged Donald Trump “pee pee tape”), the network is following the precedent set by “Saturday Night Live” in splitting its major submissions in both the comedy and variety/sketch categories.
“Who Is America?” will be submitted in the outstanding variety/sketch series category, where it would potentially face shows like last year’s winner “SNL,” and previous nominees such as “Drunk History” and “At Home with Amy Sedaris.

Presidential pardon power has always been political. But few presidents have wielded it to reward heroes of a political base like Donald Trump, who has pardoned the ranchers who set off the Malheur Occupation, former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Dick Cheney’s henchman Scooter Libby. Today, the pardon power hangs over the work of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as he racks up convictions for men like former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. Trump has even boasted on Twitter that he could pardon himself. Here, a look back at controversial presidential pardons,...

President Donald Trump used Twitter to stoke anti-immigrant sentiment in a video that brazenly ties migrants fleeing poverty in Central America to a cop-killer smirking as he brags about his crimes.
The president has spent the final weeks ahead of the midterm election attacking the thousands of migrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador heading for the U.S. border, a group he has dubbed a “caravan” of invading hordes.
Last week, Trump amplified his anti-immigrant statements at campaign rallies with a video that reached more than 6 million viewers on Twitter, and offered a preview of one of the most racially charged political attack ads to appear on television in decades.

The New York Times has found itself on the wrong end of a defamation lawsuit brought by former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
The immigration hardliner who was famously pardoned from a contempt of court misdemeanor by President Trump, accused the paper and editorial board member Michelle Cottle of a “maliciously calculated” effort to damage his reputation, stemming from an August 2018 article by Cottle celebrating Arpaio’s failed Senate run.

His death had earlier been confirmed by Nye County Sheriff Lt. David Boruchowitz, who told reporters that, preliminarily, there is no indication of foul play.

“The Good Place” may have returned for a third season with yet another rejiggered premise, but it still delivered its signature laughs, wordplay and of course, the Easter eggs endemic to the show. The series is always worth a re-watch thanks to the background jokes, hilarious asides, and other sneaky bits of humor thrown in.

When Sen. Cory Booker (D-n.J.) threatened to defy Senate rules and release confidential documents about Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, he cited the opportunity to have his own “I am Spartacus” moment — and prompted a few head scratches about the pop culture reference.
“This is the closest I’ll ever get in my life to an ‘I am Spartacus’ moment,” Booker said, citing a line from the 1960 Academy Award-winning movie “Spartacus,” directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas, and based on real history.
While the line Booker is referring to is iconic, it’s also just old enough that it’s beginning to slip from some people’s pop culture lexicon.

Sb-1070, known colloquially as the “Show Me Your Papers” law, merely codified the bigotry that disgraced Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio had been putting into practice. It permitted officers to question a person’s immigration status based on their appearance. The law was defanged in the courts, but Arpaio’s star rose in Republican circles. President Trump endorsed his practices when he pardoned him last year for a contempt-of-court misdemeanor conviction, which Arpaio received because he refused to obey a federal...

Did failed vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin help promote Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who Is America?” for no good reason? You betcha! The finale of the seven-episode Showtime series ended on Sunday night without an appearance from the former Alaska governor, which means what ever she said or did with a Cohen character ended up on the cutting room floor.
Earlier this month, Showtime programming head Gary Levine hinted that “there are several people who have thrown themselves into buses that may not be heading their way.”
Before the premiere of “Who Is America?” last month, Palin went public with the claim that she was duped by Baron Cohen, and claimed the comedian had presented himself as a disabled war veteran in a wheelchair. However, Showtime later revealed that Baron Cohen was actually in the guise of his character Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., Ph.D., a conspiracy theorist (in the...

John McCain died Saturday afternoon at his ranch in Sedona, Arizona. He was 81. The longtime senator from Arizona had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, for over a year, and his death came a day after his family told the media they had decided to discontinue medical treatment. Shortly after McCain’s office announced his death, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle expressed their sympathies for the six-term senator.

Sacha Baron Cohen goofed on two liberal figures Sunday on “Who Is America,” trying to get Howard Dean to comment on Hillary Clinton’s gender, and asking Jill Stein about whether climate change is real.
As his character Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick, Baron Cohen brought a conspiracy theory to 2004 Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean: the question of whether Hillary Clinton is actually a man.
“Do you believe Hillary Clinton is actually a woman?” Ruddick asked Dean.

Sacha Baron Cohen asked David Clarke to run down the trouble with anti-fascist protesters on “Who Is America,” and agreed with the former Alabama sheriff that “you don’t want to take sides” when talking about Germany in the 1930s.
Clarke joined Baron Cohen during a segment in which the comedian played his character OMGWhizzboyOMG, a viral YouTube star from Denmark who does “unboxing” videos of toys called Shopkins. The video setup is clearly aimed at children, but the gag is that the right-leaning Whizzboy talks about “issues” with guests while opening toys.
“Let’s talk bout the dangerous people who marched in Charlottesville, or as they’re called, Antifa,” Baron Cohen’s Whizzboy said to Clarke as the segment begain. “What are they like?”

Sacha Baron Cohen’s interview with former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on “Who Is America?” wasn’t Baron Cohen’s most ridiculous interview, but it did have some pretty ridiculous Bob Marley-related jokes baked in.
Playing his right-wing journalist character Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick, Baron Cohen interviewed Lewandowski about his sense of Donald Trump. Baron Cohen’s Ruddick started with a question about whether Trump is racist.
“Is Donald Trump a racist, or is he the least racist man alive?” Ruddick, Baron Cohen’s pro-Trump character, asked Lewandowski to start the segment.

After being duped on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Showtime series Who Is America?, former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has come forward to address the skewering Cohen gave him.
“I made a bad mistake security-wise,” Arpaio said in an interview with the Washington Examiner about his appearance on the show. “They said, ‘we’re doing a feature for Showtime — the top 20 people in the United States.’ It looked pretty nice [that] I made the top people.”
During the interview, Cohen disguised himself as a Finnish celebrity named OMGWhizzBoyOMG and the two had a bizarre conversation in which Arpaio spoke to a tiny toy donut about the need for guns, conceded that Trump has most likely had a “golden shower,” and admitted that he would accept an offer of “a blow job” from Trump.
Arpaio was impressed at the fame of OMGWhizzBoyOMG but at the same time, was a “little suspicious” because they were filming in a warehouse.

Less than a week after Showtime aired a Who Is America? episode featuring Joe Arpaio, the Maricopa County, Arizona, sheriff says that he responded to questions about oral sex and a "golden shower" because he was confused by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's fake Finnish accent.

Stephen Colbert used his opening monologue Monday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” to mock Donald Trump’s tweets about his son’s meeting with a Russian lawyer in 2016, in which he called Donald Trump Jr. “wonderful.”
Colbert zeroed in on Trump’s tweets from Sunday in which he admitted the Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 was actually about getting information on Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton. But first, Colbert took issue with the way Trump described his son, Donald Trump Jr.
“There’s a report in the Washington Post … that Donald Trump is getting worried that the Trump Tower meeting might lead to criminal charges for his son,” Colbert said during the monologue. “He tweeted, ‘Fake news reporting a complete fabrication that I’m concerned about the meeting my wonderful son Donald had in Trump tower.’ Wonderful son Donald? Stop telling everyone you were duped by Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Who Is America?” show, celebrities and politicians. Your episode might not even air, Showtime programming president Gary Levine (indirectly) said on Monday.
Levine made the remark in a reporter scrum following Showtime’s broader executive session at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour. Here’s how that smaller-scale Q&A went:
Reporter: “When does the Sarah Palin episode air?”
Gary Levine: “All I can say about that is there are several people who have thrown themselves in front of buses that may not be heading their way.”
Reporter: “So some of those bits he shot with famous people might even not end up in the show?”
Levine: “Sacha is incredibly hard-working and selective in the final product and he’s always refining it and he has a very high bar. So we will see what we will see.

Plenty of people have accused Joe Arpaio, the Donald Trump-pardoned former Arizona sheriff, of not knowing what he’s talking about. Arpaio handed them even more ammo than necessary when he got duped by Sacha Baron Cohen into an impossibly bizarre conversation in which Arpaio spoke sternly to a tiny toy donut about the need for guns, conceded that President Trump has most likely had a “golden shower,” and admitted that he would accept an offer of “a blow job” from Trump.

Controversial former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio is clearly grateful that Donald Trump has handed him a presidential pardon. Convicted of criminal contempt for refusing to follow a court order preventing him from racial profiling, Arpaio was pardoned by Trump last fall. On Sunday’s episode of Showtime’s “Who Is America?” he touted his close, personal friendship with Trump.
Star Sacha Baron Cohen, in the guise of the Finland social media star “OMGWhizzBoyOMG,” somehow convinced Arpaio to sit down for an interview during what was touted as a toy unboxing videos. At first, the questions were about guns, or how rich Trump was. But soon, Cohen asked about the infamous alleged Trump pee pee tape. It’s not clear Arpaio understood what he was being asked.
“Do you think Donald Trump, he’s your friend, that he might have had a golden shower?” Cohen asked. Arpaio’s repose: “It wouldn’t surprise me.

Is Donald Trump, as he claims, “the only person who immediately walked out” of an interview with Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Ali G” persona? If you’ve been paying attention for the last year and a half, you can probably guess the answer: nope.
But in fairness, we’ll concede Trump did bail fairly fast, even if he still had enough time to answer a few questions first.
Trump first made the claim on Twitter in 2012, as evidence he’s not the kind of person who falls for scams. And based on footage from the interview, filmed in 2003 for the second season of his HBO series “Da Ali G Show,” he at least figured out fairly quick that the situation wasn’t on the level.
