Teppei Koike and Katsuhisa Namase are set to star in a film adaptation of the Nhk comedy show Salaryman Neo.
The Nhk series, which depicts a loose office atmosphere, has been a surprise hit with office workers across Japan since debuting as a 1-off special in 2004 and coming back as a regular show in 2006.
This will be Koike’s first appearance in the series, and the film version will feature an original story. Koike will play a new employee at a company while Namase plays his irrational section manager.
Turmoil erupts as a new product plan is revealed in an impromptu meeting, insuring a gloomy future for employees.
Ikki Sawamura and Sei Hiraizumi, who also appeared in the show, will play supporting roles.
Filming will begin in mid-April, with a national release planned for November.

The Japanese film site Cinema Today has released a new trailer for Gisaburo Sugii’s 3D animated film Tofu Kozo (literally “tofu boy”) via their channel on YouTube.
Based on the novel “Tofu Kozo Sugoroku-dochu Furidashi” by Natsuhiko Kyogoku, the story is set in Edo period Japan and revolves around the young son of the leader of all yokai (fictional spirits and monsters from Japanese folklore). Unlike his fellow yokai, Tofu Kozo (voiced by actress Kyoko Fukada) is unable to scare even the most timid of humans due to his silly appearance and his completely unintimidating calling card of carrying a plate of tofu around. Constantly made a fool of by his colleagues and scolded by his father, Tofu Kozo is joined by a Dharma doll chaperone as he embarks on a trip to find his mother. He’s involved in various adventures on his journey and experiences personal growth along the way.

The more I see of this upcoming movie addition to the Gokusen canon the more I can see that the production team behind it is really, really catering to only fans of the show. Thus dictates how successful they will be at the box office but with the new trailer and announcement of a lot of the returning cast from the first two seasons making appearances in the film it should boost their success at home in Japan. And then there are the gaijin like me who like the show as well who will want to see this as well but will have to resort to getting it on DVD cause I don’t imagine this could travel outside of Japan as a stand alone film.
