Dua Lipa knows how to bring the party. And apparently it runs in the genes. While making her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut last night, the award-winning pop star acknowledged how she’d made her television debut in the same building eight years ago and gave a special shoutout to her parents — who were in the audience cheering her on — telling a story about an unlikely run-in she had with her folks one night.
“As you can see,” she said, “they’re kind of cool. They love to party. One night, I was out with my friends and we ended up at the club at three o’clock in the morning and who do I bump into but my parents. Which is embarrassing, cause the last thing you want to see when you’re super high and drunk-off-your-ass is your daughter.”
The punchline got a huge laugh, particularly from her parents up in the balcony.

Ryan Gosling mesmerized everyone at the the prestigious 96th Academy Awards with his iconic performance of I’m Just Ken, a song from Greta Gerwig’s 2023 film, Barbie. The performance was spellbinding as it left everyone at the ceremony grooving to the mellifluous voice of the Blue Valentine actor. Safe to say, that the actor had stole the show on the Oscars stage by being Ken.

However, throughout his Oscars performance, Gosling was worried for the well-being of one MCU star, as Simu Liu had torn his Achilles heel and was on his way to recovery. Nevertheless, the Taken actor decided to show up to dance at his Barbie co-star’s performance on the biggest and most honored stage, the Academy Awards.

From engaging in an X pat with Lil Nas X to calling out Drake, Baby Storme has been making waves all week and has recently labeled herself as an ex-best friend to Ice Spice. In her recent series of tweets, she took shots at Nicki Minaj after leaking an alleged exchange between her and Spice.
The alleged texts from Spice branded Minaj as ungrateful and delusional, claiming that she invited Minaj to collaborate on the title track for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. But according to the producers of the Barbie album, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

La La Land received one of the most memorable do-over moments in Hollywood history when the film was incorrectly announced as the Best Picture winner at the 2017 Academy Awards, which was actually presented to Moonlight. But the film’s leading man Ryan Gosling would rather go back and change a more crucial, aesthetic error about the movie: it’s promotional poster.
“La La Land. There is a moment that haunts me,” Gosling recently told The Wall Street Journal Magazine when asked if there were any particular roles he would want to do over.

The 16 Best Ryan Gosling Movies, from ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Drive’ to ‘Barbie’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023, and has since been updated.]
Ryan Gosling has that Ken-ergy. He’s Ken out of Ken. He’s Kendlessly Kentertaining. He’s the Kend all, be all. He’s the Kenvy of other actors. He’s impossible to not Kenjoy. He’s more, much more, than Kenough.
Gosling has had a long, fruitful career, but it’s safe to say that he’s never committed to a role as hard as he’s committed to the bit that was the “Barbie” press tour. Every interview and soundbite the Canadian actor gave in the publicity run for Greta Gerwig’s take on the iconic Mattel toy line has launched meme after meme, as he’s spoken about the importance of telling the tragic story of Barbie’s beau Ken. It’s a commitment that’s only seconded by his performance in the film itself, where he goes for broke with a hilarious, oblivious, and often sweet...

“The Fall Guy” costume designer Sarah Evelyn received the script long before Oscar nominee Emily Blunt was on board to play Jody, an aspiring film director. As Evelyn thumbed through the pages, she was attracted to the idea of how it felt like a classic movie with a prototypical underdog.
In putting Jody’s looks together, Evelyn began looking at ‘80s icons like Lauren Hutton and Brooke Shields. Then, she took stock of some famous female directors’ wardrobes.
“I looked at Kathryn Bigelow and Patty Jenkins, women who direct action. I took a good look at Greta Gerwig because she’s very of the moment,” says Evelyn. Other directors including Agnes Varda also popped into mind, and when Blunt signed on, she too came up with ideas. “She was really well researched and is costume-forward.”

Long before the superheroes of Marvel and DC became cult icons with fans, the 80s were all about another hero, He-Man. Die-hard fans of the franchise were ecstatic to hear that the show was going to be revived as a live-action film in 2022. Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Challengers and The Fall Guy prove that the movie star is still alive – and can make a huge difference to a film’s success. A few thoughts…
The movie star is dead. Or at least our idea of stardom may have drastically changed. After streaming has become a credible rival to cinemas, it’s not so much star power that necessarily gets people to spend their hard-earned money on a movie ticket. Sure, the Swifties ran to the cinemas to watch The Eras Tour, but Taylor Swift is hardly a movie star, despite her turn in Cats.
Ana De Armas blames social media for the lack of movie stars. “I feel like the new generations don’t have that concept, because of social media,” de Armas told Vanity Fair in 2023. “There is so much information out there and oversharing. The concept of a movie star is someone untouchable you only see onscreen.

Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing.
According to its official synopsis, “Masters of the Universe” introduces a 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia.

We recently got word that a live-action movie based on Rob Liefeld's fantasy/horror comic series Avengelyne was in development, and we have some exciting updates courtesy of Deadline.
As previously reported, the project will be directed by Olivia Wilde (Don't Worry Darling), with LuckyChap, the company Margot Robbie runs with Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, and Simon Kinberg, on board to produce. Now, we've learned that Warner Bros is negotiating to close a seven-figure film-rights deal for the movie, and Poor Things scribe Tony McNamara has signed on to pen the script.
The trade also confirmed that Robbie is interested in playing the title role, but it sounds like her decision will be script-dependent.
An earlier version of the movie was in the works back in 2013, with former The Mandalorian actress Gina Carano attached to star.

Chris Hemsworth has once again reflected on his role in the poor reception to Thor: Love and Thunder, shouldering the blame for leaning too much into the extreme silliness of the film.
In a new cover story with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth explained, “I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.”
The star of the Thor franchise previously spoke about the fourth installment with GQ last year, detailing his worry that the movie may have been “too silly,” prompting him to “do some other stuff for a while.”

Chris Hemsworth graces the cover of Vanity Fair’s May 2024 issue, where he revealed that he feels Marvel fans deserve another “Thor” movie after the whiff that was 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” The actor already admitted to GQ last year that his fourth standalone “Thor” movie was “too silly” for its own good, but the misstep appears to continue to haunt him.
“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “I didn’t stick the landing.”
While Hemsworth has always been grateful for his career-defining role as Thor, he admitted to the publication that he grew frustrated with the character while playing him in four standalone Marvel films and additional “Avengers” movies.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team,” Hemsworth said. “I would read everyone else’s lines, and go, ‘Oh, they got way cooler stuff.

While Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated “Barbie” was the highest-grossing film of 2023, as we’ve seen over the course of the last year, it angered and irritated many. From Oliver Stone to Kelly Reichardt to Ruben Östlund, seemingly everyone had a take on “Barbie” they were willing to share. The latest person to weigh in on the film, or at least give their candid thoughts, was TV super producer/writer Shonda Rhimes, known for “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “Bridgerton,” and her Shondaland TV producing empire.

Shonda Rhimes argues that 'Barbie' "didn't need to be" a "feminist manifesto".The 'Bridgerton' producer admits that she enjoyed last year's blockbuster featuring Margot Robbie as the iconic toy doll but was disgruntled with the cultural discourse that put unnecessary expectations on the flick.Speaking to Variety, Shonda explained: "Ok, here's what I'll say. If you're expecting a 'Barbie' movie, then I thought it was great."But I think a lot of people were expecting so much more, and then tried to make it so much more. "There was nothing wrong with the movie; I thought it was totally delightful. But the weight people put on a movie about Barbie was very interesting to me."I've heard the song 'I'm Just Ken' in my house every single day because one of my kids sings it all the time. Lily Gladstone is one of the eight jurors who have just been announced for the Cannes Main Competition. After success at last year's festival with Killers of the Flower Moon, the Oscar nominee feels like a logical choice. Indeed, most of the jury comprises artists who have found acclaim at the Croisette. There's a former Palme winner, a Jury Prize victor, the co-writer of a Palme d'Or recipient, stars of various pictures that have screened there, and more. All things considered, Greta Gerwig is probably the least familiar with Cannes red carpets and the screen of the Lumière. But after three solo directorial credits of such cultural prominence, it's easy to see why she's this year's Jury President.

Shonda Rhimes wasn’t dazzled by the discourse surrounding “Barbie.”
The “Bridgerton” producer told Variety that while being behind documentary “Black Barbie” and even getting her own Mattel doll in her honor, she was less than thrilled about the pressure that audiences and critics put on Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” to make a profound cultural statement.
“I saw the ‘Barbie’ movie at home,” Rhimes said before saying “no comment” as to whether she enjoyed the film or not.
“If you’re expecting a ‘Barbie’ movie, then I thought it was great,” Rhimes said. “But I think a lot of people were expecting so much more, and then tried to make it so much more. There was nothing wrong with the movie; I thought it was totally delightful. But the weight people put on a movie about Barbie was very interesting to me. We’re just two weeks away from the 77th Cannes Film Festival, and this morning the august French institution revealed who will determine the winners of this year’s awards. A cross-section of international talent will join “Barbie” and “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who will lead the panel, in an effort to undoubtedly compare apples to oranges and try to make sense of a diverse slate of films from directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Baker, Ali Abbasi, and many others.
Lily Gladstone, who won several Best Actress awards last year (but not the Oscar!) for her revolutionary turn in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” is the other American joining Gerwig. The actress, currently seen on FX/Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” is returning to Cannes one year after Martin Scorsese and Apple Original Films brought “Flower Moon” to the French Riviera festival for its out-of-competition debut.

Greta Gerwig might be honouring her two-film commitment to Netflix’s planned Narnia franchise in one big lump.
Before Barbie became the phenomenon that it did last summer, Greta Gerwig had already agreed her next move: a two-film deal with Netflix to kick off the streaming platform’s latest attempt to launch a big splashy franchise, this time with a series of adaptations of Cs Lewis’ beloved Narnia books.
News of Gerwig’s deal with Netflix first emerged towards the end of 2022, a good half a year before Barbie would release to huge acclaim and transform her from a respected director of impressive indie breakouts (Ladybird) and charming literary adaptations (Little Women) into a coveted studio director of blockbuster films with mass market appeal.
To be fair to Netflix, though, the folks there managed to tie Gerwig up before the success of Barbie and as such, they find themselves with...

Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and W1A’s Hugh Skinner will star in a National Theatre revival of Oscar Wilde’s play about courtships, betrothals, and confused identities. The Importance of Being Earnest also stars three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke playing the imperious Lady Bracknell.
Director Max Webster, making his Nt debut, told Deadline exclusively that casting Gatwa and Skinner as the idle bachelors Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing -both leading double lives – who pursue two young women, both determined to marry someone called Ernest, and with Clarke as the dreadnaught dowager decreeing her own rules of class, taste, and propriety, was “a dream come true.”

Uberto Pasolini’s “Nowhere Special” is delicately tinted by profound shades of imminent grief. As a 35-year-old, terminally ill single father in Northern Ireland, John (a quietly powerful James Norton) grieves his impending demise and the inevitable fact that he will vacate his four-year-old son Michael’s (Daniel Lamont) life permanently and prematurely. A Belfast window washer, John sees the reflections of his grief everywhere as he scrubs and shines surface after surface. In one scene, it’s the headstones on display in the window of a funeral parlor. In another, it’s a dad happily picking up his baby inside a restaurant. That’s just John’s every day on the other side of a glass facade, with stark glimpses into what’s coming and what he will soon lose.
Meanwhile, his often silent and always observant toddler Michael deals with his own share of grief, at an age...

The international film festival, playing out May 14-25, has a distinct American voice this year. “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig is the first U.S. female director name jury president. When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

In today’s time, the film industry is coming out with movies left, right, and center. Thus, studios have to go out of their way to promote their films just to draw attention to them. We haven’t forgotten about Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and the incredible marketing that came before it, have we? And now, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the latest entry into the list of films with unique promotion strategies.
Kingdom of the Planet of Apes (2024)

On Wednesday, three characters from the upcoming movie were seen riding horses on a beach in San Francisco. Yes, you read that right. Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver” debuted on Netflix on April 19. Critical pans aside (IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called Part Two “almost as disastrous” as Part One and gave it a D. Perhaps David’s the real “Scargiver.”), the sequel to the 2023 “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire” became the streamer’s biggest film (in any language) for the week of April 15-21. It was watched for 44.2 million hours; based on its 2:04 runtime, Netflix translates that to 21.4 million views.
On the March 6 episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Snyder said “Rebel Moon — Part One” was seen by more people (on Netflix) than the smash-hit “Barbie” (in theaters).
“Say right now, [Part One is] like almost 90 million views… 80 or 90 million accounts turned it on, give or take,” Snyder told Rogan. “They assume two viewers per screen, right? So that’s 160 million people supposedly watching… at $10 a ticket,...

Actor Ryan Gosling has an eclectic set of movies in his filmography, which has made him a versatile actor. Though the actor had his breakthrough with the romance flick The Notebook, he has branched out to action, comedy, sci-fi, and drama. Gosling was recently nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
One of Gosling’s most underrated performances is the Shane Black-directed black comedy The Nice Guys. The neo-noir comedy sees him play a detective in the ‘70s along with Russell Crowe. Though the film is a cult classic now, it was a commercial failure. Gosling mentioned that the success of the animated movie The Angry Birds Movie ruined The Nice Guys’ chance for a sequel.

A24’s political thriller “Civil War” is resonating not just in red states and blue but overseas, too.
Alex Garland’s film, starring Kirsten Dunst as a photojournalist who traverses a violently divided United States, has grossed $45.7 million in North America and $20 million internationally. Global ticket sales stand at $67.3 million through Monday, and it’s projected to cross $70 million on Tuesday.
“Civil War” is the first A24 movie to top the domestic box office, and it’s impressively remained the No. 1 film for two consecutive weekends. Given the fiercely U.S.-centric subject matter, it wasn’t clear the film would resonate at the international box office. But “Civil War” has managed to appeal to overseas audiences with the biggest turnout in the United Kingdom, where it has grossed $4.8 million, followed by the Netherlands, where it has grossed $750,000. Over the weekend, the film opened in first place in several smaller moviegoing markets,...

“We’re in a crisis situation,” Picturehouse Managing Director Clare Binns concluded this morning when quizzed on the current challenges facing British cinemas during an appearance at the UK’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry.
Binns, who has been with Picturehouse since 2003, was joined in front of the committee by Vue CEO Tim Richards and Alex Hamilton, CEO of Studiocanal UK. The trio spoke for over an hour about various topics surrounding the distribution and exhibition of British films, each with differing opinions and approaches.
“The industry is in a bit of crisis at the moment because it doesn’t really know where the future is,” Binns continued. “Since Covid, streamers coming into the marketplace and now the franchise movies are costing more to make and the profits are less than they were. So the studios are looking now at what they’re making.”
Binns added that the runaway success...

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn on Thursday, April 11. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. Et. See the full lineup below.
The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia Labeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis.
