As the creative community tonight mourns the loss of legendary television show creator Steven Bochco, several of the writer/producers who cut their teeth on his shows and went on to great careers reminisced with Deadline on what made him so special. A common theme that explains how one man’s company could generate so many seminal dialogue-driven dramas like Hill Street Blues, La Law and NYPD Blue: Bochco was ferociously protective of the writers who worked for him, and heaven help anyone who violated that.
Ted Mann’s work with Bochco encompassed the early days of the provocative drama series NYPD Blue, as well as Brooklyn South and Civil Wars. Nicholas Wootton and Matt Olmstead came up under Bochco, and together they ran the signature series NYPD Blue after David Milch departed along with Mann and the early core of writers. Not many cinemas in Austin can claim to have had an opening night consisting of a true Hollywood red carpet, a gala premiere, high-profile attendees and a movie star or two on hand for its first night of business. Yet the hopes and expectations attached to Austin's then-new Mann Fox Theatre weren't the same as they were for most other movie houses of the time. While most movie theaters aimed to attract local families or groups of teenagers looking for a fun night out, the Mann Fox Theatre sought to make going out to the movies a more upscale affair.
The idea of having the Mann Fox Theatre appear as a grand moviegoing experience was in sharp contrast to Austin's then-current state. By the mid-to-late 1960s, the city had become one of the hotbeds of the counterculture with its share of social unrest, psychedelic drugs and revolutionary...

Even if you've never been to Los Angeles, chances are you're familiar with the world famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre. It opened 85 years ago and has been the host of countless movie premieres, appeared in dozens of films itself, and served as the inspiration for Walt Disney World's The Great Movie Ride, along with being one of Hollywood's top tourist attractions because of its location on the Walk of Fame and the celebrity hand prints in the cement. Now the theater is getting an upgrade and a new name along with it, as the La Times reports Chinese TV maker Tcl has changed the name to the "Tcl Chinese Theatre." This isn't the first time the theater has seen a name change. When Ted Mann bought the theater in 1973, it was altered to "Mann's Chinese Theater" (now another local theater) until bankruptcy caused owners to reinstate the Grauman's name in ...

The Hollywood cultural and historic landmark opened in 1927 by Sid Grauman will now be called Tcl Chinese Theatre under the 10-year, $5 million deal with Chinese TV firm Tcl Group. As part of the agreement, Tcl will help fund improvements to the property and has agreed to sponsor a national and international marketing campaign to promote Hollywood and the iconic theater, according to the La Times. “This is one of the landmarks of North America,” said Hao Yi, vice president of Tcl Group. “It can be a bridge to link the cultures of China and North America.” The deal gives Tcl, the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of flat-panel TVs, an opportunity to gain a foothold in the U.S. This isn’t the first name change for the venerable theater. Ted Mann bought the cinema house in 1973 and for nearly 30 years it was called Mann’s Chinese Theatre. Warner and Viacom...

History Channel is setting up another miniseries with the team behind Hatfields & McCoys. The cable network is developing a six-hour miniseries centered on the formation of law enforcement agency Texas Rangers in the 19th century, including the creation and annexation of Texas to the U.S., a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. Hatfields & McCoys' Leslie Greif will serve as producer, with writer Ted Mann set to pen the script for the tentatively-titled Texas Rising. The announcement comes after Hatfields & McCoys' three-night miniseries event in late May drew huge ratings for History, drawing 13.

Exclusive: On the heels of the blockbuster success of Hatfields & McCoys, History has teamed with two key auspices behind the miniseries — executive producer Leslie Greif and co-writer Ted Mann — for another six-hour mini set during America’s turbulent 19th century. History is developing Texas Rising, a miniseries about the formation and rise of the Texas Rangers, the oldest law enforcement organization in North America. It will chronicle the force’s humble beginnings — its creation was triggered by a call-to-arms penned by Stephen F. Austin in 1823 — as well as its role during Texas’ secession from the U.S. during the Civil War. Mann will write the mini, with Greif executive producing. Mann, repped by Apa and attorney Tom Hoberman, recently joined the second season of Starz’ period drama Magic City after serving as co-executive producer on the pay cable network’s first drama series Crash and the upcoming Da Vinci’s Demons.

Well if you hadn't really heard of Homeland prior to this weekend, you probably have by now. The Showtime series pulled off a major upset at the 64th Annual Emmy Awards last night, winning a large chunk of the major awards in the Drama category over favourites like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones. Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both took home awards for Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series, while the show also broke Mad Men's four-year win streak for Outstanding Drama Series. Elsewhere, Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for his supporting performance as Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won Best Lead Actress in a Comedy for Veep. Modern Family still took the Outstanding Comedy Series, however, while the HBO movie Game Change took the Outstanding Mini-Series or TV Movie. Kevin Costner did manage to pick up some...

Well, that’s it. This years Emmy race is over and there are some familiar names amongst the winners… Modern Family once again dominates the comedy categories whilst Homeland surprises everyone and walks away with Best Drama and Best Leads in a Drama for it’s two stars. It;s nice to see Louis C.K. get an award for the excellent work he does on his “sitcom” Louie.

The results of the television awards ceremony of the year are always something to look forward to – the quality of the small screen has only been improving over the past decade or two, and it’s nice to see credit given where credit’s due.
Mad Men, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, and 30 Rock led this year’s nominations, and it’s Modern Family and Homeland that have come away with the most wins, taking four awards apiece.
Homeland has been one of the most talked-about dramas over the past year, and leading stars Damian Lewis (doing a Hugh Laurie, being an English actor playing an American on Us TV) and Claire Danes came away with the Leading Actor/Actress prizes in the dramatic categories.

Awards season is just getting ready to gear up in the movie world, but awards show fanatics (if there are such creatures) don't have to wait for the new year to sit through a three hour-plus session of people winning things, because this Sunday brings the Emmy Awards, the annual celebration of the best/most popular/however you want to define it in television. The Creative Arts Emmys (for technical categories, for the most part) were held this past weekend, with "Game of Thrones" winning a brace of prizes, but this Sunday brings the main event. And to get you ready, we've made our predictions for the winners below (at least in the categories we care about -- not so much reality shows and co.), as well as picking out those who we think should take the prizes of the nominees. Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments section.

With no previous writing winners in contention for Best Movie/Miniseries Writing, it's harder than ever to predict the frontrunner in this race. Of the nominated screenwriters this year, only Ted Mann, co-writer of "Hatfields & McCoys," has an Emmy on his mantel, but that was in the Best Drama Series race for "NYPD Blue" (1995) and not an individual achievement. Mann's two co-writers for the History miniseries -- Bill Kerby and Ronald Parker -- each celebrate their first Emmy nominations. Perhaps the most well-known Movie/Mini scriptwriter is Danny Strong ("Game Change"). Besides a failed bid in this same category in 2008 for "Recount," Strong is an actor whose many TV appearances have included "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Gilmore Girls," "Mad Men" and "Grey's Anatomy." As "Game Change" is expected to prevail for Best Movie/Miniseries, that could give ...

NYPD Blue, the first cop show to really up the ante since co-creator Steven Bochco’s Hill Street Blues, was going strong early in season one. Bochco, along with David Milch, had brought to the small screen a procedural that also focused on character, and a spate of writers and character actors that gave the show its home-grown feel. Round five of our episode-by-episode recap is no practical joke.

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times now, we’re still not quite into what will become the normal groove for the show. Part of that entails three teams of detectives, working as partners, who catch cases as they come in, usually focusing on two cases per episode. Since we’re not quite there, there have been a lot of detectives just kinda wandering around the squad room, some with file folders,...

The theory at work in History's three-night, six-hour (including commercials) "Hatfields & McCoys" miniseries is a simple one: Roughly 130-ish years after its bloody roots, most (many? [some?]) Americas are aware that the Hatfield and McCoy families had a long-running feud, but they know nothing at all about the nature and the depths of said feud. What results is a lengthy litany of grievances and miscommunications that led to a series of deaths and placed the two clans and their names forever in our cultural lexicon. Produced by Leslie Greif, directed by Kevin Reynolds and written by Ted Mann,...

Amid seismic shifts in local exhibition, Warner Bros. and Viacom are stepping up efforts to unload L.A.-area movie theaters piecemeal, including the iconic Grauman's Chinese in Hollywood. Such an exit would conclude an initially profitable but more recently tedious tenure of ownership for the studio companies.
Execs at Cinemerica -- the co-venture of Warners and Paramount-parent Viacom that operates Mann Theatres -- believe the timing is right to make a concerted run at selling one or more of its Mann venues. Two are considered especially attractive: the fabled Grauman's on Hollywood Boulevard and the Criterion Theatre on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade.
"Grauman's and the Criterion are kind of the diamonds in the circuit," Cinemerica topper Millard Ochs said.
Mann let leases expire in Westwood Village's now-closed National and Festival theaters and will vacate the classic Bruin and Village spaces in March unless late-breaking negotiations result in an extension to those leases.
