Zz Top were never really a ballad band. Think “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Legs.” But for 1986’s Afterburner they tried their hand at a power ballad with “Rough Boy” — this was the Eighties after all. Earlier this week in Nashville, Keith Urban put his own spin on “Rough Boy” at a special event honoring Zz Top’s Billy Gibbons.
Urban was in attendance for the annual BMI Troubadour dinner, an industry event held each September by the performing-rights org to salute a select artist as its “Troubadour.” Last year’s went to Lucinda Williams,...

Nashville songwriters turned out in force on Wednesday afternoon to escalate the fight against four music-streaming services on royalty rates. Earlier this year, Spotify, Amazon, Google and SiriusXM/Pandora announced they would appeal a 2018 ruling from the Copyright Royalty Board — the government body that sets royalty rates for statutory licenses — that would see publishers’ and songwriters’ cuts of revenue rise by 44% over the next five years. The four services have disputed the decision and asked for a lower rate increase, rankling the songwriting community, which is especially taking issue with Spotify’s involvement.

Actors Jacki Weaver, Nicole Kidman and Geoffrey Rush have all been nominated for the 83rd Academy Awards for their 2010 performances.
Shaun Tan/Andrew Ruhemman’s animated short The Lost Thing is also up for an Oscar, as is producer Emile Sherman for his work on The King’s Speech.
VFX supervisor Ben Snow was recognised for his work on Iron Man 2 (Australia’s Fuel VFX was one of the vendors working on this title), and editor Kirk Baxter is nominated for The Social Network.
It should also be noted that Australia’s VFX company Rising Sun Pictures worked on the nominated film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.
Perhaps the most anticipated nomination was Jacki Weaver’s, which is even more remarkable considering it’s a nomination for an Australian actress in an Australian film set in Australia. It’s her first ever, but she’s facing tough...

The Cma Songwriters Series will be returning to where it all started: New York City's Joe's Pub. The seventh year of the series, which showcases the best of Nashville's hit songwriters, will feature Ashton Shepherd, Rivers Rutherford, and Chris Wallin on March 24.
What makes Cma Songwriters Series different is that because the songwriters themselves are on stage, the fans get insight into the stories behind some of their favorite songs.
Sheperd said, "Songwriting is and always will be the backbone of country music. I'm just proud God chose me to write songs, and I thank Him everyday that I have a chance to be a part of something special."
Bob Dipiero will serve as the host for the evening.

It's been an interesting night at the 68th Annual Golden Globes; a potpourri of predictable winners…and some unusual victories.
Among the winners, David Fincher's film The Social Network, about the rise of Facebook, took home the top honor as best motion picture in the dramatic category.
HBO's Prohibition-era series Boardwalk Empire was an early winner on Sunday night. The series, which revolves around Atlantic City gangsters during the 1920s, took home trophies for best TV drama and best TV actor for star Steve Buscemi.
"I'm only as good as the people I work with and I have the best cast," the actor said on the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Glee favorite Chris Colfer and The Fighter's Christian Bale also picked up early honors. Colfer, who portrays openly gay high school student Kurt on Glee, was named best supporting actor in a TV series, miniseries or TV movie.

On the Best Actress, film front; Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry and Michelle Williams fight a tight race.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe nominations were announced today with The King’s Speech leading the pack with seven nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Colin Firth for Best Actor (Drama), Tom Hooper for Best Director, Helena Bonham Carter for Best Supporting Actress, and Geoffrey Rush for Best Supporting Actor. The film, which deals with King George VI’s stuttering problems, is expected to carry out this success to the Oscars and it is no surprise that it got the most Golden Globe nominations.
The Fighter picked up six nominations: Best Picture (Drama), David O. Russell (Best Director), Mark Wahlberg (Best Actor, Drama), Christian Bale (Best Supporting Actor), Amy Adams (Best Supporting Actress), and Melissa Leo (Best Supporting Actress). It tied with The Social Network for the second most nominations. Inception received four nominations including Best Picture (Drama), Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
The real bizarre news was in the Best Comedy/Musical category.

The 68th Golden Globe Award nominations, probably the most significant industry award ceremony preceding the Academy Awards (and most likely to match the Academy Awards), were announced minutes ago… and, of note, Halle Berry received a nomination for Best Actress (Drama) for her work in Frankie & Alice. So, it looks like the campaign has paid off somewhat. She hasn’t won, and she probably won’t win, given her competition, but at least she’s been noticed. Let’s see if Oscar voters feel the same way.

Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes and Blair Underwood joined HFPA President Philip Berk to announce the nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards from the Beverly Hilton early this morning. The King’S Speech saw the most love from the HFPA with 7 nominations for the Weinstein Films royal drama. The Social Network and The Fighter saw 6 noms each and Kids Are All Right, Black Swan and Inception round out the nominations with four.
As most awards season watcher will notice, some of the “surprise” nominations like the 2 for Johnny Depp, the embrace for The Tourist and even Burlesque, all stem from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual need for A-List stars and ratings.
