Writer-director David S. Goyer is certainly no stranger to translating beloved, larger-than-life properties to life on screen, from the superheroic (including Marvel’s “Blade” franchise and DC’s “Dark Knight” trilogy) to science fiction (“Terminator: Dark Fate” and “FlashForward”) to supernaturally mythic tales (the forthcoming “Sandman” streaming series).
But Goyer had yet to face a task as challenging as unifying the epic, thousand-year vision embodying sci-fi novelist Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” series, which spans across seven books collecting stories written over the course of five decades. “Foundation” has long been considered a seminal example of 20th Century science fiction, quintessential in its allegorical approach — and, for decades in the view of always-ip-hungry Hollywood, next to impossible to adapt for film or television.
As a near-lifelong fan, Goyer remained undaunted, teaming with Apple TV Plus to build a story framework and character arcs that would unify Asimov’s far-flung saga (ultimately...

Apple TV+ today announced the worldwide premiere date for Foundation, and unveiled a brand new teaser of the epic saga from visionary showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer.
The teaser showcases the sweeping scope and scale of the eagerly awaited new Apple Original series, which marks the first-ever on-screen adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s iconic, award-winning novel series of the same name.
The 10-episode first season of Foundation will debut globally on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2021 with the first three episodes, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday.
“In the decades since the ‘Foundation’ series first saw print, Asimov’s prophetic science-fiction work has never been more relevant than it is now,” said Goyer.
“Growing up, I devoured ‘Foundation’ and dreamed of one day seeing it on screen – but a feature film didn’t seem big enough to embrace the ambition."

More cast members have joined leads Jared Harris and Lee Pace on the Apple TV+ adaptation of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.
Well, they're trying to adapt Isaac Asimov's Foundation series for TV again. Foundation was headed for HBO back in 2014 with Jonathan Nolan at the helm, but that version vanished into space. But now David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles) are tackling the extraordinarily dense and cerebral series for Skydance Television. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Marcy Ross, and Robyn Asimov will serve as executive producers.
Asimov's core three Foundation novels, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation are all worth your time. There's a secondary group of sequels, too, but really, these are the big three you should be concerned with.
