Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a movie that French people love to hate. But despite harsh criticism in France, the historical epic smashed the box office and grossed over $9.76 million from 1.15 million tickets sold in its first two weeks in theaters.
Ironically, “Napoleon” got the lowest score of all of Scott’s recent movies on Allociné, the local equivalent of IMDb, with 2.3 stars out of 5 from 4,659 users’ reviews, yet it’s one of Scott’s biggest hits in France. “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoléon Bonaparte, a Corsica-born officer who became Emperor of France, and Vanessa Kirby as his wife as Joséphine de Beauharnais, world premiered in Paris on Nov. 14, a few days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Scott’s last two movies, “The Last Duel” and “House of Gucci,” were warmly reviewed in France, and yet they sold only 425,000 and 800,000 tickets respectively during their releases there.

Ridley Scott is shrugging off the negative reviews coming out of France for his new historical epic “Napoleon,” which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais. Reviews are all over the place for the biographical drama. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave it five stars, for instance, while French GQ wrote it is “deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny” to have French characters speaking in American accents.
As recapped by the BBC, other French publications also targeted Scott’s latest. The daily newspaper Le Figaro said the film could be renamed “Barbie and Ken Under the Empire,” while Napoleon biographer Patrice Gueniffey told Le Point magazine that Scott made a “very anti-French and very pro-British” rewrite of history.

It seems that every acclaimed director is trying to do his best to make a ‘practical’ film, that contains low to none of CGI shots. Now it’s the turn of the great Scott. In an interview, the ‘Napoleon’ director explains what it takes to shoot ultra complicated ‘practical’ fight scenes, utilizing a minimum amount of CGI and VFX plates.
Behind the scenes of “Napoleon”. The Arri Alexa Lf. picture: Sony Pictures Entertainment No-cgi is the new trend
We discussed a lot on this. Top-notch directors are doing their best to make a big-budget action film with minimum utilization of CGI. We saw this on the most acclaimed mega projects. For instance, Tom Cruise was bragging about Top Gun: Maverick minimizing CGI and VFX (although we’ve seen that it’s not very accurate). Nolan’s Oppenheimer is maybe one of the most solid references for zero CGI, by implementing...

As with any historical film based on a prominent figure or event, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon has faced some criticism for its historical inaccuracies – and the movie hasn’t even come out yet! Upon the arrival of the trailer, Dan Snow – a historian and television personality – took to TikTok to point out the errors, much to the dismay of its director.
After learning of the breakdown and just what Snow zeroes in on, Ridley Scott told The New Yorker that he – and those constantly questioning inaccuracies in such pictures – need to “get a life.” What makes anybody think Ridley Scott wants to hear your gripes?
Snow, who is an admitted fan of Ridley Scott, broke down the trailer for Napoleon by picking apart every detail he could, down to the poster’s tagline: “He came from nothing. He conquered everything,” which the commentator quickly rebuked. He then moved on to Marie Antoinette’s execution,...

“Napoleon” director Ridley Scott is unbothered by analysis from a critic who called out several inaccuracies in his epic new film, telling him to “get a life.”
The nearly three-hour movie is the 28th feature for the director, who turns 86 on Nov. 30. And he clearly doesn’t have time for nitpicks from TV historian Dan Snow, who pointed out inaccuracies such as “Napoleon didn’t shoot at the pyramids.” Snow even dinged the movie’s tagline, “He came from nothing, he conquered everything,” since the French monarch did not conquer Britain.
“Get a life,” Scott told Snow of his critiques in a New Yorker interview published Monday, echoing William Shatner’s long-ago message to diehard “Star Trek” fans.

Ridley Scott is returning to theaters this month with the release of the historical drama “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French emperor and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais. The film promises to bring numerous historical events to the big screen, from the beheading of Marie Antoinette to the Battle of Waterloo, but not all of them might be fully accurate.
As observed in Scott’s new interview with The New Yorker, the official “Napoleon” trailer was met with criticism by TV historian Dan Snow, who called out some of the inaccuracies in a viral TikTok post. Snow argued that “Napoleon didn’t shoot at the pyramids” (the film’s trailer depicted as much during a peek at Scott’s interpretation of the Battle of Pyramids), and he said that Marie Antoinette “famously had very cropped hair for the execution, and, hey, Napoleon wasn’t there...

Ridley Scott didn’t make “Napoleon” for history classes.
The director shrugged off criticisms over historical inaccuracies of the upcoming period piece starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French ruler during an interview with The New Yorker. The article cited TV historian Dan Snow’s viral TikTok that called out the locations and stylings shown in the film’s trailer, including having Napoleon Bonaparte show up in places he did not travel to in real life.
“Get a life,” Scott replied.
“Napoleon” looks at Napoleon’s origins and climb to power through the lens of his relationship with his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). The Apple epic aims to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, ambition, and strategy as a military leader and war visionary. The distributor doesn’t appear to be touting its historical accuracies.
The feature is set to have a four-and-a-half-hour director’s cut streaming on Apple TV+ in 2024.

Exclusive: Oscar winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and BAFTA-nominated director Natalie Hewit are boarding the National Geographic documentary Endurance (working title), the incredible story of “the epic search to find the lost ship of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.”
The announcement comes almost exactly a year after Shackelton’s ship Endurance was discovered eerily intact on the Weddell Sea floor near the northernmost part of the Antarctic, more than a hundred years after the vessel sank. The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust organized and funded the mission to find the historic wreck.

Shackelton and his crew of 27 set sail in late 1914 on an exploratory mission endorsed by Winston Churchill, then Britain’s First Lord of the Admiralty. The ship became trapped in sea ice, forcing the crew to quit the vessel and set up camp on an ice floe.

Dog tags belonging to two members of the Band of Brothers, made famous by Stephen E. Ambrose’s book and the 2001 Steven Spielberg-Tom Hanks HBO miniseries, have been discovered in the UK 78 years after D-Day and are being spotlighted for a documentary for Dan Snow’s History Hit streamer.
Snow’s team discovered the tags belonging to Richard A. Blake and Carl Fenstermaker after digging at Aldbourne, Wiltshire, where the 101st Airborne Division, otherwise known as Dick Winters Easy Company, were stationed during World War II. The tags were found by archaeologist Richard Osgood and a team of veterans from Nightingale and Aldbourne Heritage Centre supported by Breaking Ground Heritage.
Members of the Easy Company were made famous by the Emmy-winning HBO series Band of Brothers from Spielberg and Hanks, which dramatized the experiences of the battalion and starred Damian Lewis as Winters and David Schwimmer as Captain Herbert Sobel.

Over 100 years after explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance was shipwrecked, The New York Times reported on March 9 that the ship has been discovered. The miraculous story is now set to become a NatGeo documentary.
Airing as part of the network’s “Explorer” franchise this fall, “Endurance” will chart the discovery of Sir Shackleton’s shipwrecked Endurance, which sank in the Antarctic in 1915. The ship was located at the bottom of the Weddell Sea, east of the Antarctic Peninsula, using undersea drones. The Endurance22 search expedition team had been searching for more than two weeks in a 150-square-mile area around where the 144-foot wooden ship went down. The wreck was found at a depth of 3,008 meters.
NatGeo is partnering with ABC News, Snow’s History Hit, All3Media label Little Dot Studios, and Consequential for the feature, directed by BAFTA nominee Natalie Hewit.

The wreck of Ernest Shackleton’s ship “Endurance” has been found 107 years after it sank off the coast of Antarctica and National Geographic has been swift to commission a documentary on the subject that has fascinated the world for over a century.
National Geographic has partnered exclusively with History Hit, the SVOD and content platform co-founded by historian Dan Snow; All3Media’s Little Dot Studios and production company Consequential for a documentary detailing the successful search and discovery of one of the great lost shipwrecks of history — Ernest Shackleton’s “Endurance.”
“Endurance” left South Georgia for Antarctica on Dec. 5, 1914, carrying Shackleton and 27 other men with the goal of reaching the South Pole and crossing the continent via an overland trek. However, nearing Antarctica, the ship became trapped in pack ice and sank in 1915. The crew made it by sea to uninhabited Elephant Island before Shackleton and five men set off...

However, nearing Antarctica, the ship became trapped in pack ice and sank in 1915. The crew made it by sea to uninhabited Elephant Island before Shackleton and five men set off...

All3Media’s Little Dot Studios has signed Sky Group Head of Transformation Zara Gregory as Director of Operations.
Reporting to COO Kevin Gibbons in the newly-created role, Gregory, a former BBC exec, will develop and implement an overall operational strategy for the content producer, which is seeking an “operational change agenda.”
She has spent the last five years delivering transformation programs for Comcast-owned Sky and helping embed cultural change. Prior to Sky, Gregory helped lead BBC3’s transition from linear to online, a move that is soon set to be reversed.
She joins Little Dot at a time of growth, with the outfit having recently acquired historian Dan Snow’s streamer History Hit and content agency Wing, along with launching a consumer brand arm.

This year’s 74th Edinburgh International Film Festival will host the European premiere of Nicolas Cage’s latest flick “Pig,” the debut directorial feature from award-winning editor Michael Sarnoski (“The Testimony”). Edinburgh Festival and Cage have a long and amicable relationship. In 2014 the festival hosted the well-received “Joe,” in which he starred alongside Tye Sheridan, and two years ago the fest co-programmed a special sidebar called Cage-a-rama 3D with Matchbox Cineclub, screening a double-header of “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” and “Drive Angry,” both in 3D. “Pig” will screen on Wednesday, Aug. 18, in the Festival Theatre.
“The Oscar winner delivers his best performance in years as a chef-turned-recluse who briefly reenters society,” praised Variety’s Michael Nordine in his review of the film earlier this month. Cage plays a truffle hunter searching the Pacific Northwest for his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped.
