Brokeback Mountain the opera is to make its debut this month.
The operatic adaptation was first announced six years ago, but it will now finally be performed at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
The production, based on the Oscar-winning film by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, has been written by the book's author Annie Proulx.
Music for the opera has been composed by Charles Wuorinen. It will run from January 28 until February 11, BBC News reports.
Speaking in 2008, Wuorinen revealed how he accepted an offer from the New York City Opera to compose the show, which was originally scheduled to open in 2013.
"Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it," he said.
"It gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier [the company's general director] and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so."

New York — A bitter contract dispute has led to a lockout of musicians at the New York City Opera, a possible "death knell" for a company that's nurtured such singers as Renee Fleming, Placido Domingo and Beverly Sills.
On Sunday, hours after talks broke down, the cash-strapped company canceled Monday rehearsals for a Feb. 12 opening production of Verdi's "La Traviata" in Brooklyn.
