Investment capital and management company Interactive Gaming Ventures is teaming up with Epic Games to fund independent game developers creating promising titles in Unreal Engine 4, Igv announced on Wednesday.
Igv, led by former PlayStation president and CEO Jack Tretton, plans to invest in two to three experienced indie teams per year. It will give $1 million to $5 million per project over the next seven years, and help fund milestone deliverables, along with managing promotion and distribution. Studios that take money from Igv will still control their IP and creation process, the company said. Igv typically focuses on teams looking to ship to PC first, with the option of porting their games to consoles and mobile as well.
“We are looking to provide exceptional independent teams building games with Unreal Engine the support structure, cash infusion, marketing resources, and relationships that will help them achieve incredible financial returns,” Tretton said.

Despite displaying early signs of potential, particularly coming off the back of the barnstorming PSP, it’s fair to say that the PlayStation Vita has now all but cemented its status as a legacy platform. Sony’s portable hardware continues to perform relatively well in Japan, a market that typically favors mobile gaming experiences over consoles, but all in all, at around 13 millions lifetime sales, the Ps Vita has struggled to carve out an audience from the get-go.
Why, exactly? Well, according to Jack Tretton, former CEO of Scea who left the company in 2014 after almost two decades, the Vita was simply “too late” to make a sizeable dent on the market.
Speaking in a candid interview with IGN, Tretton, who now holds a place on the advisory board for Genotaur, stated: “Now that I don’t work there anymore, I think internally it was: ‘This is a great machine,...

On November 22nd, Sony announced that they’ve sold more than 30.2 million PS4 consoles through to consumers in roughly two years on the market. For those of you not keeping score, that makes it the second fastest selling console of all time behind Nintendo’s cultural phenomenon, the Wii. While the attach rate for the Wii was pretty poor, indicating that people were buying the console and then quickly abandoning it (hello, Gran!), software sales for the latest Sony console are impressive. The PS4 is a games machine that people are buying in droves, and spending a lot of time with, and not even Sony seems to know why.
Of course, sales aren’t everything. The Xbox 360 was arguably the best console of the last generation, with games galore that largely outperformed their PS3 counterparts and a strong, reliable online infrastructure, and by the end of the cycle it likely...

Good question, Barrett.
E3 2015 will surely go down as one of the best. While it didn’t have the compelling narrative of the 2013 conferences, the battle between Microsoft and Sony this time round was a lot more pleasing to watch. Aside from one sassy comment regarding backwards compatibility during the Microsoft briefing, the two video game giants largely ignored each other, and the message of the day seemed to be less about sticking it to the other guy, and more about trying to delight the fans.
In that regard, E3 2015 was an unmitigated success. Microsoft opened the show on Monday morning with a conference that was confident and well paced, hitting their stride early and keeping things moving along until the end. They didn’t stop to remind us that we should all be watching TV through our consoles, and apparently, it seems they’ve forgotten that Kinect even exists like everyone else has.

E3 2014 just recently passed, but we still have one last E3 article to complete our month of E3! What we want to do is dig into the history of E3 and find the best moments that every gamer should remember. Moments that were funny, awesome, or just plain out of whack. No matter what, these moments will engrave themselves in your head for all future E3’s. Even if you never witnessed them yourself.
Sony’s Gets The Price Right 3 Out Of 4 Times
Sony was a newcomer to the gaming world back in the 90’s, but E3 was also rather new. Yet Sony already knew how to play the game, coming right out of the gates firing. Sega had just announced a spiffy new console that will cost $399, which was rather high for the time period let alone today, and not many people were thrilled. Up next to talk about their new stuff?...

It comes around quick, doesn’t it? Seems like only yesterday that Microsoft were announcing the terribly exciting Killer Instinct and now we’re already bored of it. They also announced they’d move both Heaven and Earth to stop you playing used games, you filthy cheapskate. And look how that turned out. Sony’s Jack Tretton joyfully trolled them for it at the time, though, much to the delight of a whooping, Jerry Springer crowd. And then Nintendo probably revealed some stuff, too, but who really cares about that?
So here’s why this year’s E3 will be the best one ever: Tretton recently stepped down as Sony president, Microsoft revoked all its DRM policies, and Nintendo need to prove the the Wii U is still relevant. In short, the dust has settled and all three are now more or less on the same next-gen playing field. So,...

During Sony’s keynote conference at Tokyo Game Show, President and Group CEO Andrew House stated that he expects the company to shift 5 million PlayStation 4 units by the end of fiscal 2013; which ends in March, 2014. This would encompass sales from all territories following the hardware’s launch, beginning with the console’s North American release on November 15th, 2013.
With a period of five months acting as the intended time window, Sony’s prediction would equate to one million units per month – a figure that would emulate the PS3’s 3.6 million figure during the same period. In order to achieve this 40% sales hike, House reiterated the PlayStation 4’s consumer-centric approach and accessible user interface. What’s more, although the company struggled with profitability on the PlayStation 3, he expects that the PlayStation 4 will be economically self-sustaining “significantly sooner” than its console predecessor.

Speaking in a recent Famitsu interview, Sony’s least productive freelance contractor, Fumito Ueda, provided yet another non-informative update on the development hell surrounding The Last Guardian. Ueda insisted that the game is still very much in development, but it is not currently a “priority” title for Sony.
“It’s under earnest development. However, Sce Japan Studio, who’s working on The Last Guardian, also has titles like Puppeteer and Knack, and those are only the ones currently announced. Those are taking priority right now.”

Jack Tretton made a big splash at E3 when he revealed that PlayStation Plus members will get free access to a beta version of Driveclub when the PlayStation 4 launches later this year. In a classic “too good to be true” moment, we are now hearing that the Plus version is not exactly the same as the full priced game.
Speaking during an E3 Q&A session transcribed by PlayStationer, Evolution Studios revealed that the PlayStation Plus version of Driveclub is “exactly” the same as full version, except for the fact that it is missing a “few assets.”
“Yes, the Ps Plus version will be the exact same as the full version, except that it may be missing a few assets such as cars or tracks, that will be found in the full version. However the online multiplayer, the asynchronous challenges and the single player campaign will all be present in the Ps Plus version.

As industry-defining moments go, it was initially about as understated as it gets. Words including terminology that is unfamiliar to most non-gamers, and even to a significant number of gamers. Words that were nevertheless greeted in the room like the very confirmation of the afterlife itself, and soundtracked by screams of relief and disbelief. Proponents of Microsoft’s iron-fisted used game DRM policy for the Xbox One have often justified their support for the company’s anti-consumer scheme by theorizing that the pre-owned limits would allow next-gen games to be sold at a cheaper price structure. Speaking to GameSpot, Microsoft has now confirmed that this will not be the case and next-gen Xbox One software will use the same $60 price model first established by the Xbox 360.
Those who were hoping for a small Xbox One software price drop in exchange for giving up their ownership rights, can always take some comfort in the fact the confirmed $60 price rules out the $10 next generation increase predicted by industry analyst Michael Pachter.
The $60 price point is in line with Sony’s plans for high-end PlayStation 4 games (as announced by Jack Tretton last February) although this next-gen pricing structure has only been confirmed by Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo at this point.

Well there's a little bit more good news for Xbox One fans -- game prices are staying the same. The industry standard of $59.99 was set at the beginning of the current cycle and so far it looks to remain there.
Talking to Gamespot, Microsoft confirmed that there won't be a price hike for the next-gen games. So there's at least that.
Conversly, the PS4 "will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range," Jack Tretton Scea CEO told CNBC. How this will shake out on Microsoft's end is anyone's guess but the way that Sony has positioned themself as the Indie friendly system, it might be a while before we see the byte-sized games for cheap on Xbox One.

Is the Xbox One already doomed? Has Sony already won the next gen console battle with the PlayStation 4? Here are some thoughts...
Now that E3 has been and gone, one thing has become seemingly apparent – Sony has landed several blows on Microsoft, and many in the gaming community seem to think that the PlayStation 4 has already defeated the Xbox One.
The furore surrounding the Xbox One and its policies on used games and connectivity was growing day by day even before E3 and Sony's big reveal. Now that the PS4 is a known quantity, things have ramped up to a Spinal Tap-style 11, and Microsoft, rather than admit mistakes, appears to be digging a bigger hole. But what's the big deal here, and what are people unhappy about? Let's take a look.

This morning during an interview with Game Trailers, Sony CEO Jack Tretton seemed to suggest that the platform holder would allow (but not facilitate) third-party publishers to implement used game DRM on the PlayStation 4. Sony has since clarified Tretton’s comment, stating that he was only referring specifically to playing used third-party games online.
During the interview Tretton was asked what Sony would do if a third-party publisher wanted to place restrictions, like an Online Pass system, on their PlayStation 4 game. Tretton responded by saying:
“We create the platform, we’ve certainly stated that with our first party games we are not going to be doing that [restricting used game sales], but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform.”
“There is going to be free-to-play, there is going to be every potential business model on there. And again, that is up to their relationship with the consumer, and what they think...

1. There is a general perception that the Playstation 3 was not the winner in the dying videogame generation. This is not to say that it lost. The Playstation 3 produced some of the most beautiful games ever created. It is a high-powered machine. The freaking Air Force used it to create a freaking supercomputer. But it didn’t have the mass appeal of the Wii or the swagger of the Xbox 360. It was merely excellent. The Playstation 2 was excellent, also, but it utterly defined its generation. In a weird way, even if the sales tell a different story, Sony is coming into this E3 as an underdog.

Los Angeles (AP) — Sony broke out the heavy ammunition Monday against Microsoft, announcing its forthcoming PlayStation 4 will cost $399 — $100 less than the competing Xbox One.
"The gaming landscape is changing with new business models and new ways to play," said Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
The price announcement wasn't the only shot fired at Microsoft during Sony's presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the gaming industry's annual U.S. trade show. The loudest applause at the company's event show came when Jack Tretton, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, announced that the company would not try to restrict used game sales. Sony just dropped the bombshell announcement we've all been hoping for, and that according to a lot of gamers, may have just handed them victory in the next-gen war.
Sony's Jack Tretton announced to thunderous applause that there will be absolutely No restrictions when it comes to used games. You'll be able to sell them, share with your friends, and rent them just like you can with the current generation of games. This caused the loudest applause I've heard so far at E3 and there's good reason for it.
As if that wasn't enough, they also confirmed that there's no online requirement in any way shape or form for the console. There's no game certification, and no need for your system to check in online at any time...If you want, it can be permanently off-line.
These are massive things that gamers have been the most negative about in terms of the Xbox One.

Early on during the Sony press conference at E3 2013, Ps Vita got a healthy boost of announced titles. God of War 1 and 2 in HD, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Dead Nation and Flower are slated to release on the system. Not that these aren’t good games, but these titles should have been part of the Vita line-up much earlier than over a year in the system’s life cycle.
Alongside this slew of remastered and re-released games from 2009, Jack Tretton of Sony also announced that TellTale’s next wave of The Walking Dead episodes will come to the system, starting with 400 Days. By that time, the entire series will be available for the Vita.
Are you excited to play games you may already own? Would you like to see more games of the past make an appearance on Vita? Let us know your thoughts.

Speaking during a panel at South by South West over the weekend, Wedbush Securities Research Analyst Michael Pachter revealed that his firm is expecting software for the PlayStation 4 and the next-gen Xbox (Xbox 720/Durango) to retail for $70.
This price directly contradicts recent statements from Sony Computer Entertainment America president and CEO Jack Tretton, who hinted that PlayStation 4 software would top out at $60, saying:
“We’re going to welcome free-to-play models, games from $.99 up to those $60 games… I think people are willing to pay if they see the value there. The heat for the true gamer is on the console.”
“You’re going to see some of the greatest games ever created and the consumer is going to have more ease of use, the ability to sample games before they buy them and have more breadth of games than they’ve ever seen before,”

Speaking during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference earlier this week, Blake Jorgensen (Electronic Arts’ chief financial officer) revealed that the publisher is anticipating that game development costs for the PlayStation 4and next generation Xbox (Xbox 720/Durango) will likely rise by five to ten percent over the cost to develop games for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
“On any one title, it might be five to 10 percent increases in cost, but the real opportunity comes with the ability to expand what you can do in that title. Overall you might see larger titles or larger costs because of the capability that you can deal with, but we’ll also see larger revenue streams, we believe, because of the excitement around some of those big titles.”
As to how that higher development cost will impact consumers, Jorgensen noted that Electronic Arts has yet to officially determine what their end-user cost will be.

One of the topics that Sony stayed far away from during the PlayStation 4 event this week was any discussion of the next generation console’s price tag, or how much its software will cost. While we still don’t have a definitive answer to either one of those questions, two Sony execs have stepped up to suggest that we might be able to afford the system without having to “work more hours to buy one“.
Speaking to IGN, Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida revealed that even though the PlayStation 4 does have a significant technology leap when compared to the PS3, the company will be able to keep the new console competitive in terms of price. Yoshida credited the decision to use custom Amd hardware over the PS3′s Cell architecture as one of the major cost cutting factors.

New York (AP) — Sony showed off what the PlayStation 4 can do, but not what it will look like.
The Japanese electronics giant talked about its upcoming game console for the first time and said it will go on sale this holiday season.
But Sony didn't reveal the device itself. Presenters played games that were projected on screens in a converted opera house, but the PlayStations themselves were hidden backstage throughout Wednesday evening's two-hour event.
"I don't know that the box is going to be something that's going to have a dramatic impact on people's feelings about the game. It will be a color and a size fairly comparable to previous consoles," said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, the U.S.-based arm of the PlayStation business.

Today Netflix and Sony revealed that the PlayStation 3 console has become the #1 device used by subscribers to stream Netflix video content to their TV. On top of that, it turns out Netflix has made the PS3 the "primary development platform" for Netflix, meaning PS3 owners could see new features first.
"PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing, and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our No. 1 platform overall," said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. "PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing and first deploying our most advanced features. We can transparently update our application with new features on a daily basis, and through the free PlayStation Network, people around the world can sign up for Netflix directly from their PS3."

We’re all eagerly looking to the future in anticipation of the next generation of consoles. The current console cycle has been the longest to date. With the launch of the Xbox 360 back in 2005, these machines have been with us close to seven years. With the Wii U being pushed out the door, Sony and Microsoft are busy developing their next pieces of hardware. Indicated by what many has seen as a some what lackluster and subdued E3, it’s clear that this generation is coming to an end and things are beginning to wrap up.
Speaking with GameTrailers Jack Tretton outlined the philosophy of the Playstation team as they move into the future.

It took Sony all of no seconds to start off with dubstep. Let's do this.
The presentation opened with Sony President Jack Tretton heralding his company's creative as the greatest in the industry, in a show all about bringing gaming to wherever you are. With that said, Quantic Dream's David Cage cam up to talk interactive storytelling, emotion, and his company's new project, Beyond. The Heavy Rain studio's next game deals with the very idea of life after death, featuring protagonist Jod Holmes over a 15 years as she deals with things beyond the world of the living. Ellen Page will be the actress portraying Jodi.
Cage presented footage from early in the game which he said was running in real time. An obviously traumatized Jodi sat in a police station as an officer attempted to find out what happened to her and why she was unwilling or unable to talk.

Developers have been coming out of the woodwork to tell us all how much they would love for used games to be banned in the next generation of gaming. However, at least on Sony executive believes this to be the wrong way to go.
According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who talked to Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton, when asked for his opinion on banning used games Tretton came out against this notion.
This is what Tretton had to say:
“For the record, I’m totally opposed to blocking used games. I think it’s great for consumers that they can buy those… I think it would be anti-consumer of us to do that.”
Although Pachter did note that Tretton stated he was only speaking for himself and that Sony executives in Japan may have different ideas. This does go against every thing we have heard about the...
