Study Reveals Most Inclusive Episodic TV Programming; Greg Berlanti, Ava DuVernay Top Producers List
Just in time for Monday’s Emmy awards, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, along with the the Adobe Foundation, have unveiled The Inclusion List for episodic programming, which recognizes the most inclusive series in broadcast, cable and streaming.
Following a similar effort for films, the list analyzes on-screen and behind-the-camera personnel from more than 500 programs to determine the 100 most inclusive broadcast and cable series from the 2021-22 broadcast season, as well as streaming series from 2021 to 2023. The project also recognizes 20 producers responsible for the most inclusive content.
“The goal of the Inclusion List is to recognize the stories and storytellers who are taking inclusion seriously and whose content reflects their values,” said Dr. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “With today’s release of the Inclusion List for broadcast/cable and streaming series, we are excited to acknowledge the creative voices championing inclusion across the spectrum of episodic content.

Following news that the Writers’ Guild of America and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have reached a tentative deal, Hollywood is starting to prepare for its comeback. While some productions were in the midst of filming when the WGA strike happened, others were in the early planning stages — like “The Last of Us” Season 2.

Although season 2 of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) isn’t expected to start airing until sometime in 2025, the actors thought they would start filming the new episodes relatively soon – possibly even by the end of this year. But then the WGA and SAG strikes hit, and the longer they go on, the more a 2023 start date seems very unlikely. With that said, showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have both told Entertainment Weekly that The Last of Us season 2 is ready to go as soon as the strikes end.

HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us” scratched the surface on the video-game franchise’s massive world – which will continue to unfold when the drama series eventually returns for its second season.
But outside of Joel and Ellie’s main narrative, which co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously said could span across multiple seasons, the pair have not had discussions about the potential for spin-offs that could further expand on the world’s other characters.
“We haven’t talked about that specifically because we’re so focused on just telling this main narrative. I’m not against the idea of other shows that may draw from these characters or that world,” Mazin told TheWrap in an interview in accordance with WGA guidelines and facilitated through his personal publicist. “I don’t know how much more ‘The Last of Us’ I personally would be able to do. HBO has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy series Somebody Somewhere for a third season.
Created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen, Somebody Somewhere is inspired by the life of comedian and singer Bridget Everett and is set in her native Kansas. The series follows Sam (played by Everett), a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold. Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere. Season two reminds us that families are hard, even the fun ones. Sam and Joel (Jeff Hiller) have settled into a comfy routine. But nothing stays the same forever.

HBO is heading back to the Little Apple.
The premium cable outlet has renewed Somebody Somewhere for a third season. The pickup comes a few days after the dramedy starring Bridget Everett and set in Manhattan, Kansas, concluded its seven-episode second season.
“We’re thrilled to announce the third season of the honest and impactful Somebody Somewhere,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp comedy programming at HBO and Max. “Nothing makes us smile quite like this show, which never fails to remind us that life is made up of the small moments, that family can be chosen, and that dreams don’t have deadlines.”
The series draws relatively modest viewership in relation to some other HBO originals, but it’s been a critical favorite. Season one received an AFI Award as one of the top 10 TV programs of 2022.

Bella Ramsey, star of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) recently gave fans a heads-up that The Last of Us season 2 is still off in the far distance – and HBO has since confirmed that they don’t expect to start airing the new episodes until 2025. While we wait, Ramsey has done an interview with Vanity Fair – and this time the Ellie actor said viewers can expect season 2 to be darker than the first season!
Ramsey told Vanity Fair, “It’s darker. It’s really a story about revenge, and a continuation from the first season about the dangers of unconditional love.” The article also mentions that filming on The Last of Us season 2 could begin “as soon as the end of this year” – but at this point it depends on how long the writers strike is going to last,...

Bella Ramsey, star of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) said a couple months ago that The Last of Us season 2 probably won’t start airing until late 2024 or early 2025. Now HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi has confirmed to Deadline that the network is aiming for a 2025 premiere.
While speaking to Deadline about the writers strike and the fact that it’s too early to tell if the strike will impact HBO’s scheduling plans, Orsi said, “We were looking at The Last Of Us for sometime in 2025.” So even if the writers strike hadn’t happened, The Last of Us season 2 would still be well off in the distance.
When the new season does arrive, fans can expect to see more, bigger, and more elaborate creature action in it. Orsi added “there will be a couple of new pieces of casting,...

In a leadership shakeup, Sister Global CEO Stacey Snider is stepping down from her role at the media company.
It’s a surprise move given Snider’s high profile, her extensive relationships throughout the entertainment industry and the fact that she was prolific in getting projects off the ground during her nearly four years (many of them overlapping with the pandemic). But Snider will remain involved as a creative advisor to the company. As part of that arrangement, she will also serve as an independent producer and will remain in charge of the Los Angeles office’s TV and film slate. She will continue to be a shareholder in Sister. The change is effective immediately. Elisabeth Murdoch, who is also the company’s executive chair, will assume CEO duties on an interim basis until Sister hires someone to take over Snider’s operational role.

Season one of HBO’s Somebody Somewhere largely focused on lead character Sam’s (Bridget Everett) halting attempts to fit back into her Kansas hometown. The trailer for season two of the series suggests she’s feeling at least a little more comfortable there.
The trailer shows that Sam and Joel (Jeff Hiller) have moved in together — “It’s solely a financial arrangement,” Joel says — and settled into a routine. Sam also takes a few more steps to further her singing, approaching her old music teacher for voice lessons.
Hiller also told The Hollywood Reporter that Joel will have a new love interest in season two, played by Tim Bagley (Grace and Frankie). “I originally thought that Joel might get back together with his season one boyfriend, but I think this story is much more interesting,” he said.

The first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us (read our review Here) filmed in Calgary, Alberta for twelve months straight, with different areas doubling for the U.S. locations Texas, Wyoming, and Missouri. The first season of the HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us covered the entirety of the first game, and for the second season the show will be moving on to an adaptation of the sequel game, The Last of Us Part II. The HBO TV series adaptation of the video game The Last of Us has reached the end of its nine episode first season, and with those nine episodes it told the entire story of the video game. But there is a second video game to adapt for the second season that HBO ordered after only two episodes of The Last of Us had aired, and in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann (who was also the creative director on the video games) discussed their approach to bringing the story of The Last of Us Part II to the screen for The Last of Us season 2.
When asked about their creative process, Mazin said, “Our process works. Our process of kicking the tires on everything, our process of agreeing that no matter how much we disagree, we will find a way to agree. There’s no veto power here.

The Last of Us concluded its freshman season Sunday night by adapting the conclusion of the first video game.
Looking ahead to The Last of Us Season 2, however, fans shouldn't expect to get the entirety of the sequel video game's storylines across the season.
The Last of Us: Part II launched on PS4 in 2020 and told a story with differing perspectives that was much more ambitious and longer than its predecessor.
As a result, it will take more than one season to adapt the second video game in the series for TV audiences.
Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman confirmed the news to GQ.
The pair were asked if Season 2 will include the entire story from the sequel, with Mazin revealing, "No. No way."
Druckmann added, "It's more than one season."
While it's likely the second game will be told over two seasons, the creatives behind the HBO adaptation couldn't confirm...

“The Last of Us” co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have confirmed that Bella Ramsey will return for Season 2 of HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama series despite criticism on social media that she’s too young to play Ellie during the events of the video game’s sequel.
“One of the things about the casting process that’s tough is that we invite people to join us on this process and we know everything [about the secrets of the production] and nobody else knows anything except what they know, which is the game,” Mazin told reporters on Tuesday. “We know what we’re gonna do in terms of costume and makeup and hair but more importantly, we also know the spirit and soul of the actor. It’s tough as a kind of a parent of an actor because you become kind of a surrogate father on set, especially to someone who joined us when she was 17. She’s only 19 now,...
