Red Faction: Armageddon starts some time after Red Faction Guerilla, and with a new Mason: Darius Mason, the grandson of Alec and Samanya Mason. The struggling colonists have been driven underground by earth forces led by Adam Hale, the Edf cultist leader. He is hell-bent on seeing the destruction of the Mars colony and will even destroy his own forces to achieve it. Darius, has, of course, been thrust into the thick of it.
Upon opening a disused mining shaft, Darius finds a long lost chamber deep underground. Unwittingly, Darius soon realises that he has removed an ancient seal that had been sealing the entrance/exit to this underground colony, and it will come as no surprise that our hero has now unleashed complete and utter mayhem. Coincidentally, Darius comes to the conclusion that he has - although accidentally - inherited his family’s reputation, one where his own people...

Chicago – “Red Faction Armageddon” is a stellar game for players who like their action explosive. The last game in this franchise, “Red Faction Guerilla,” was based more on open-ended gameplay with destruction being a key element. As the title suggests, things have gotten a bit more intense in the follow-up, which is a much more linear shooter but hasn’t lost the franchise’s defining characteristic — things that go boom.
Video Game Rating: 4.0/5.0
Fans of the last game may be initially thrown by this experience, which features a very clear path (you even have a Gps that guides you on it), well-defined objectives, and even a rather-limited variety of enemies. There are cultists and aliens and that’s about it. You have an increasingly-awesome selection of firepower (that you can cycle out regularly with weapons lockers peppered throughout the game) along with a powerful device called the Nano Forge, which serves multiple purposes.

Red Faction Armageddon has passed under the radar somewhat this year. When I came to write my top 10 upcoming games list at the start of the year, it didn't even get a look in for the sole reason that, despite my videogame enthusiasm, I had heard little to nothing about its upcoming release. Furthermore, 2011 has already been so saturated by controversial and eagerly anticipated titles that Armageddon has remained fairly quiet.
However, I intend to change this. Red Faction, for me at least, has been one of the most enjoyable shooters of the last 10 years, and its success is testament to the professionalism and enjoyment given by the franchise to date. We have already covered the preview event - and have the review ready to go when the embargo is lifted - but I want to help spread the word as best I can, so why not keep you up...
