From “Fortnight” to “The Manuscript,” the latest episodes of Rolling Stone Music Now dive into every single track of Taylor Swift’s longest album ever, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Along the way, we debate larger issues, including whether Swift intends all 31 tracks to be seen as the album proper, or if the latter half — added by surprise on the night of release — is actually more of a collection of bonus songs.

Amanda Shires played the first of two scheduled concerts opening for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit on Thursday night, more than three months after news broke in February that the beloved Americana couple were divorcing. According to those in attendance at Mission Ballroom in Denver and social media posts, including several shared from her Instagram account, Shires delivered a stunning performance, storming headlong into any awkwardness that appearing on a bill with Isbell — announced back in October — might suggest.

Monday’s episode of The Voice — and the end of Season 25’s Playoffs — served up a painful reminder that sometimes it’s not enough to be “cute as a button.” Chance the Rapper and Reba McEntire had to shrink their teams of five contestants apiece to just three each. Along the way, some promising singers were cut (although, to be honest, none that I was as sorry to see go as Anya True and Mafe last week). Which six acts were the last put through to the Lives? At the very moment Taylormania was hitting preposterous heights, threatening to turn the artist at its center into an untouchable icon, it turns out that the real Taylor Swift was spending her time between glittery three-hour concerts making some of her most fearless art. The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology is stuffed with the rawest, angriest, and most unguarded songs of Swift’s career – quite the opposite of the ingratiating, focus-grouped inoffensiveness that a skeptic might expect from an artist at her current level of visibility.

Nielsen live-plus-seven-day data for Ryan Gosling’s Saturday Night Live episode has arrived, and the results are positive.
With Gosling as host, and Chris Stapleton as musical guest, the April 13, 2024 edition of SNL delivered 7,510,000 linear viewers. That represents the show’s largest total linear audience since Dec. 10, 2022, when Steve Martin and Martin Short were co-hosts, and Brandi Carlile was the musical guest. Additionally, the Gosling-led episode delivered 1,727,000 P18-49 linear viewers, the show’s largest P18-49 linear audience since Oct. 14, 2023, when Pete Davidson hosted the Season 49 premiere.
The Gosling-SNL story is even stronger if one takes into account episode viewing across digital platforms: 8.9 million total viewers and 2.64 million P18-49 viewers. Not only do the 8.9 million and 2.64 million represent season highs for the show, but the 8.9 million is SNL’s largest cross-platform audience since Dec. 11, 2021, when Billie Eilish was both the host and musical guest.

With a few lines in a guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin’s chart-topping hit “Like That,” Kendrick Lamar ignited his long-simmering cold war with Drake into what’s become the widest-reaching rap beef in years. Since then, it’s all gotten incredibly messy, starting with J. Brandi Carlile shared a fond recollection of the late Jimmy Buffett during an all-star tribute concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday night, recalling how he would use her name to make friends with “lesbian fisherwomen.”
During a speech leading into her cover performance of “Come Monday,” Carlile revealed that she bonded with Buffett over their shared love of fishing. “I could call Jimmy up, it didn’t matter where I was, and he’d have some salty dog captain come out and pick me up and take me fishing — even if he couldn’t be there — off the drop-off, off of Anegada, or in the Gulf,” she said.

Carlile continued, “He just treated me like gold, and he used to go out on the water and make friends with lesbian fisherwomen by telling him that he knew Brandi Carlile and that they were fishing buddies.

Even on a day when much of America was hoping to see the sun go out, there’s still an ongoing need to hear someone sing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” That, among many other things, is what’s offered in tonight’s PBS broadcast of a tribute special for Elton John and Bernie Taupin, two of the worthiest talents ever to be awarded the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize. If you’re a fan — and who isn’t?, as they say — the two-hour show will provide a total eclipse of all your other most pressing entertainment needs.
Three words: “Joni Mitchell” and “Metallica.” If this salute never moved out of the M’s, it would be worthy enough just based on those two highlights alone, neither of whom probably seemed like the likeliest Elton interpreter. But there they are, on the very same bingo card.

On Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé mixes R&b, country, and some hard-hitting guitars, among many other elements, and as the artist herself is well aware, there used to be a name for that kind of American melange: rock & roll. Call him the great collaborator. In the past year, Noah Kahan has duetted with Kacey Musgraves, Brandi Carlile, and Gracie Abrams, as part of his Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever) series. Now, he’s found the ultimate counterpart: A literal stick. Or as literal as it gets on Sesame Street.
In a teaser for the series’ upcoming 55th season, an adoring stick revealed itself actually to be a fan. “Oh, Noah, Noah,” it fawned, “Thank you, thank you.” Kahan played it cool: “Oh yeah, ‘Season of the Stick.

Few country stars have been embraced by the Grammys like Kacey Musgraves has. The singer-songwriter rose to prominence with her mainstream debut, “Same Trailer Different Park,” which became one of the most acclaimed albums of 2013, earning an 89 score on Metacritic and establishing Musgraves as one to watch in the industry. She received four Grammy nominations that year and won Best Country Album in a major upset against Taylor Swift’s commercial blockbuster “Red.” Musgraves followed that with another Grammy-nominated record, “Pageant Material,” but her third try was the charm: “Golden Hour” won Album of the Year and swept its three other nominations in the country field. Then came the pop-leaning “Star-Crossed,” which nevertheless received two country nominations. This year Musgraves is back with “Deeper Well,” which many are considering a return to form and a folk-country masterpiece. She is for sure getting her usual country nominations. But can she crossover to the general field again?...

Just last summer, experts on the intersection of AI and music told Rolling Stone that it would be years before a tool emerged that could conjure up fully produced songs from a simple text description, given the endless complexities of the finished product. But Suno, a two-year-old start-up based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has already pulled it off, vocals included — and their latest model, v3, which is available to the general public as of today, is capable of some truly startling results.

The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

Bratz is celebrating Women’s History Month by unveiling a concept doll in tribute to Sinéad O’Connor.
Honoring O’Connor just eight months after she passed away, the doll depicts the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer with her signature shaved head. While she isn’t ripping up any photos of the Pope, she is donning her “Jesus is coming — look busy” shirt, with sunglasses, baggy jeans, and a quintessentially-Bratz blinged-out lip-shaped handbag.
“Women’s Month continues with Sinéad O’Connor, an Irish singer, songwriter, and activist with a passion for ‘90z grunge fashion,” a post by Bratz on Instagram read. “O’Connor, who passed away in 2023, first debuted her scorchin’ buzzcut in 1987 when she was just 20 years old — two years after she signed her record deal. Sinéad‘s 1990 album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, was her biggest commercial success, selling over seven million copies worldwide. Its lead single,...

Allison Russell, Brittany Howard, Maren Morris, Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Brittney Spencer, Amanda Shires, and many others have formed a collective of country and Americana artists called the Tennessee Freedom Singers in support of Senate candidate Gloria Johnson. Together, they have released a new song called “Tennessee Rise” inspired by movements for social justice and equality. Stream it below.
Recorded at Sound Emporium Studio in Nashville, “Tennessee Rise” was masterminded by Russell after she found inspiration in the actions of Johnson, one of the Tennessee Three who was nearly expelled from the state’s House after participating in a gun control demonstration. Other artists who contributed to the song include Erin Rae, Katie Pruitt, Langhorne Slim, and Tré Burt, but the list goes on.

That inspiration isn’t exactly instantly evident within the album’s sleek production and Max Martin-assisted songwriting, but Grande said in an advance listening session for journalists that she had John, Paul, George, and Ringo in mind as she stuffed it full of unexpected melodic twists and half-buried ear candy.
