London, Oct 7 (Ians) Former England Test skipper Joe Root and veteran top-order batter Dawid Malan have signed new deals despite Yorkshire County Cricket Club (Yccc) getting relegated to County Championship Division Two.
This is the first time since 2012 that Yorkshire have dropped into the second tier and the club’s dismal performance this season is being attributed to the upheaval in the wake of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal last year, where the Pakistan-origin cricketer claimed that it left him close to committing suicide.
In the wake of the allegations, almost the entire coaching and management staff of the county side was sacked, dealing a huge blow to the team’s preparations ahead of the County season.
However, the relegation has “not put off former England Test skipper Root, and fellow batter Dawid Malan signing new deals at Headingley” according to a report in Yorkshire Post.

After giving his best Madonna impression during Sport Relief, former Olympic sprinter Iwan Thomas swore he would never dance on TV again.
However, the experience can't have been that traumatic as he's admitted he's looking forward to putting on the glittery lycra to face his fears on this year's Strictly Come Dancing.
Strictly Come Dancing 2015 winner: We rank the celebrities' chances of topping BBC One's dance-off
He said: "The last time I danced was for Let's Dance for Sport Relief with a team of Olympians and we danced to Madonna's 'Vogue'. After that, I vowed I would never dance live on TV again because it was so scary!
"But here I am now on the biggest dance show on TV and will be facing my fears live every Saturday night, I can't wait."

The Jump was back on our screens this evening (February 1), and by god, have we missed it!
Joey Essex, Gogglebox's Dom and Steve-o set Twitter alight as the celebrity-injuring winter sports contest returned to Channel 4. Digital Spy rounds up the best reactions below:
Kind of miss Sinitta screaming the entire way down the skeleton track. #TheJump
— Nick Walker (@nickw84) February 1, 2015
Is this how Joey gets his teeth whitened? Hurtling down an ice runway, face down on a tea tray? #TheJump
— AuditionPianist (@AuditionPianist) February 1, 2015
I think Joey Essex has the advantage in going head first in the skeleton event. He's less likely to do himself any damage! #TheJump
— Matt Hill (@mat_hil) February 1, 2015
"Joey has got to keep things simple" yeah, think he can manage that.... #TheJump

Joey Essex is the only thing on the Jump thicker than the snow.

Andy Murray has said that he is unlikely to attend a live show for Strictly Come Dancing to watch his mother Judy perform.
The tennis player told The Daily Telegraph that he would prefer to spend time relaxing at home after spending six weeks playing in international tennis tournaments.
"I'm quite looking forward to getting back and being in my own bed and my home for quite a few days, rather than watching some very average dancing," he said.
"I've only seen two of the dances, but she is having a good time - that's the most important thing. From what she's said to me, it's been the best fun she's had in such a long time, learning something new."
Andy also praised his mother's professional dance partner, Anton du Beke, for helping Judy to enjoy the experience.
"Her partner's been just loads of fun," he said. "But for her it's tough on the body.

After all the excitement about the Strictly Come Dancing launch last weekend, we've now got to wait a couple of weeks to discover who can dance and who can... waddle around a floor, badly (We're looking at you, Gregg Wallace).
In the meantime, we've had the ultimate Strictly pub debate - yes, we talk about Strictly in the pub - who is the greatest champion of all time. Here is the Definitive* ranking of the 11 Glitterball Champions from Worst to the Best.
*Actually just our opinion.
11. Chris Hollins
You can't win Strictly Come Dancing and be a bad dancer. However, Chris Hollins would have struggled to reach the final in any other series and it was only really his partnership with Ola 'Chops' Jordan and the dull competition that allowed him to stroll (or should that be Charleston?) to victory.
10. Tom Chambers
Were Tom Chambers and Camilla Dallerup the best dancers in 2008? Probably not.

'The Jump' is to return for a second series on Channel 4. The broadcaster is pleased with how the first run of the winter sports competition was received and has commissioned another season. The debut series featured a host of celebrities, including Anthea Turner, Amy Childs, Sinitta, Kimberly Wyatt, Darren Gough, Melinda Messenger and winner Joe McElderry, who took part in different winter sports with the ultimate test being a live ski jump. Davina McCall and Alex Brooker hosted 'The Jump' - which averaged around 2.4 million viewers per episode when it aired in January and February - and Winter Olympic skier Graham...

The Jump has been praised by Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt.
Speaking to The Guardian, Hunt explained that she is keen to renew the celebrity winter sports show for a second series.
The show, hosted by Davina McCall and Alex Brooker, saw a number of famous faces taking part in games such as bobsleigh, skating and skiing, with Joe McElderry named the eventual winner.
The series - filmed in Austria - was plagued with injuries, as stars including Sir Steve Redgrave, Marcus Brigstocke, Melinda Messenger and Henry Conway were forced to pull out of the competition.
However, Hunt has now explained that she believes the show was "the first time [Channel 4 has] had a big pre-watershed hit for quite a long time".
"It's hard to think what is our pre-watershed tone of voice," she said. "There is a gravitational pull at [Channel] 4 towards the edgy, the difficult and the rude.

It's alright - we can all breathe a sigh of relief. The Jump is over, though sadly we cannot say that no celebrities were harmed in the making of this show. Because lots were. Lots and lots and lots.
When Digital Spy visited the set of Channel 4's luminary-lashing reality series just before Christmas - as the stars were in their first days of ski jump training - we made a joke on the plane about the broadcaster needing to have a lot of insurance. Looking back, that was either prescient or just in really bad taste.
Let's look at the numbers. Tara Palmer-Tomkinson pulled out before the show began, apparently because it "wasn't for her". That may have been one of the best decisions Tpt has ever made, ever, because shortly afterwards, and before one second had even aired on television, Sam Jones (Flash Gordon!) was forced to withdraw after injuring his shoulder.

The Jump continues tonight (January 29) with the girls taking on the giant slalom.
Channel 4 has unveiled a couple of training videos ahead of tonight's live show, where two of the celebrities show just how much of a struggle it can be to get on the slopes, let alone take a giant leap.
Kimberly Wyatt crashes through a mini fence while also taking a few hits on the ground, but shows great determination to continue.
Meanwhile, Melinda Messenger manages to have a fight with the ski lift and forgets how to apply the brakes.
Darren Gough was the latest celebrity to be eliminated from The Jump on last night's show (January 28).
Joe McElderry has also stepped in to replace the injured Henry Conway, who pulled out after suffering a broken bone.
The Jump continues tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Darren Gough has been eliminated from The Jump.
The cricketer left the show tonight (January 28) after jumping the shortest distance.
Darren Gough and SIr Steve Redgrave had to face the jump this evening after coming at the bottom of the leaderboard in the skeleton competition.
Gough took to the smallest jump and managed to travel 12m, while Redgrave decided to jump from the medium ramp and managed to travel 14.5m.
"I was nervous there, I really was," said Gough after jumping. "I'm just pleased to get down. To get down was a massive bonus."
Gough added that he was "fine" after finding out that he had been eliminated from the show.
Meanwhile, after Davina McCall informed Redgrave that he was to continue in the competition, he said: "It was horrible being up there. My plan was to not do any jumps at all."

The Jump stars Sir Steve Redgrave and Darren Gough had a bumpy ride during their skeleton training.
While the two sportsmen both performed well during the giant slalom on Sunday, it quickly becomes clear in these new clips from training that skeleton is a different challenge entirely.
"There's no way I'm going to fit in that!" Redgrave says when he first sees the sled. "You've got to be joking!"
Redgrave also notes that big skeleton riders tend to weigh about 90 kilos, while he is 120 kilos, before making the trainers wince with his bumpy ride down the track.
Meanwhile, Gough admits that when he arrived at the track his heart "went up probably about ten beats" and confesses that he didn't realise how fast the skeleton would be.
One of the trainers suggests that Gough was "flipping around like a ping pong ball", while the experience clearly shakes up the cricketer,...

Alright, let's get those jokes out of the way now. For a show called The Jump, there was a distinct lack of jumping from Amy Childs - she was eliminated from the show last night after having a freak-out at the top of the jump and deciding she couldn't do it (Sinitta flew into the next round - or at least she did a little jump and managed to land).
Amy got on the phone with reporters this morning to explain why she went on The Jump if not to jump, why she was so scared, "ballsy" Darren Gough and releasing her own ski range...
How are you feeling this morning?
"I'm feeling good this morning, I really am. Do you know what - I am really proud of what I've achieved in the competition. Obviously, I couldn't do the jump last night. I had a major mental block, but...

Nicky Clarke has been eliminated from The Jump.
The famous hairdresser lost out after facing 5ive's Ritchie Neville in a live ski jump to remain in the Channel 4 competition.
Both Neville and Clarke jumped the K15 - the smallest of the three jumps - with the former recording the longer jump at 11 metres.
The six male celebrities took to the slopes for the giant slalom, with Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave recording the fastest time at 39.30 seconds.
Comedian Marcus Brigstocke and cricketer Darren Gough followed in second (44.75s) and third (47.74s) respectively.
Fashion journalist Henry Conway narrowly avoided facing the live ski jump, finishing in fourth place with a time of 47.77 seconds.
Clarke completed the giant slalom in 53.21 seconds, while Neville finished bottom with a time of 54.79 seconds.
Following his exit, Clarke said: "It's been a great experience it really has. It's just one of those things, I did the best I could.

When we first heard about Channel 4's new winter sports show The Jump, we were intrigued. And then they announced the cast, and we could not wait. There is nothing about Sinitta in a snowsuit that doesn't appeal to us, so we've been counting down the hours until today, when the 12 celebrities will compete and face a live ski jump for the first time.
The show's already lost two - Sam Jones went out after injuring himself in an over-exuberant celebration, and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson decided the whole shebang wasn't for her. Now we're actually going to lose a celebrity in competition - let's just hope no-one breaks any bones in the process. So join Digital Spy from 8pm when the show kicks off on Channel 4...

Just before Christmas, Digital Spy was lucky enough to travel to Innsbruck for the day. We hung out in the snow, drank hot chocolate, and marvelled at the beautiful landscape. And we got to do all that without facing the terrifying ski jump that the 12 celebrities we were with had bizarrely agreed to tackle. (Seriously. We went up to the top of it. And then we all walked back down again shaking our heads in disbelief and horror).
Channel 4's The Jump starts on Sunday, and promises to be a great watch - who doesn't want to see Sinitta in a snowsuit doing the skeleton? We got the chance to chat with the stars of the show on one of their first days of jump training, so read on for the first of our dispatches from the front line of winter games with comedian Marcus Brigstocke and celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke.

The Jump celebrities have been introduced to the intimidating ski ramp for the first time.
The new Channel 4 show sees 12 famous faces tackling winter games such as bobsleigh, toboggan and cross-country skiing, as well as attempting a live ski jump to determine who stays in the competition.
Upon sitting at the top of the ramp for the first time, Amy Childs describes the prospect as "so nerve-wracking", while Sir Steve Redgrave claims that he hasn't got "a hope in hell".
Sinitta, Melinda Messenger and Darren Gough are among the other celebrities to express their shock at the height of the ramp.
The other competitors on the nightly series include Anthea Turner, Kimberly Wyatt, Marcus Brigstocke, Nicky Clarke and Henry Conway.
Laura Hamilton has stepped in for Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who backed out of the competition earlier this month, while 5ive's Ritchie Neville has replaced the injured Flash Gordon actor Sam Jones.

The Jump has lost another contestant as Flash Gordon star Sam Jones has been forced to pull out of the show.
The Channel 4 competition - which sees various celebrities battling it out in winter sports and live ski jumps - has already seen Tara Palmer-Tomkinson decide to quit.
Jones has now been forced to exit after picking up a shoulder injury during training a few weeks ago, and has been replaced by 5ive's Ritchie Neville.
When Digital Spy visited the ski jump in Austria last month, Jones - who injured himself in an over-exuberant celebration after a successful jump - was wearing a sling and had to leave to go to a doctor's appointment.
Channel 4 has now confirmed to DS that Jones will not be competing, saying: "We had hoped that he would recover in time to still take part in the show but unfortunately he has had to...

Harry Potter stars James and Oliver Phelps – better known as the Weasley Twins – may be gearing up to battle Voldemort in the final part of the massive film series, but they took time out to play cricket for a number of charities on Sunday.
Joining former England team members Darren Gough and Devon Malcolm, as well as actress Emma Samms, the twins took to the field in Mickleham, UK, to play at Box Hill School to benefit charities such as the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the English Schools’ Cricket Association and Round Square International.
“It was a very exciting day’s cricket and we had a significant increase in people compared to two years ago,” said match organizer Simon Powell. “The Weasley twins were a great hit with the children. It was rivalled only in popularity by the school’s high ropes course, while the...

Darren Gough has busted his jaw after accidentally headbutting Ray Quinn on Sing If You Can.
The cricket star was competing against the former X Factor runner up on ITV’s Sing If You Can when the accident happened.
Darren was trying to balance on a fast spinning giant inflatable record, while trying to sing the whole time. He toppled off, fell to the right and bounced off his team-mate who was waiting by the sidelines.
A source told The Sun:
“It was nearing the end of the show when Darren was trying to stay on the record for as long as possible.
“He was doing really well and the wheel was going pretty fast. But then he lost his footing and went hurtling off the side, right where Ray – his team-mate – was standing.

Saturday Night Entertainment television is very horrible.
Don’t get me wrong. I do not mean in terms of the content, because I love it when Phillip Schofield gets all ‘Prime time’ on me. I merely mean in terms of the pressures they set upon society. Am I Right, Cruel World?
Oh us. The unsuspecting general public, who just like something to watch whilst we sip from mugs. Because sometimes mug sipping is just not enough. Sometimes the mugs are merely empty. (This isn’t a metaphor for the depravity of life, it was a mug-based analysis only.) But nowadays, turning on the television is like reawakening a rubbish school bully who gives your trousers a ‘look’. So many demands and threats are suddenly thrust upon us:
Got to Dance.
Strictly come Dancing.
Do You think you can dance?
and
How Do you solve a problem like Maria?...

Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has broken his leg while on a charity trip to South Africa, it has been revealed. The actor, who plays Dr Matt Carter in the soap, was in the country with co-star Shobna Gulati (Sunita Alahan), actress Jill Halfpenny, TV host Gethin Jones and cricketer Darren Gough to show how useful motorcycles can be for delivering aid to remote villages and schools. However, nine days ago, he crashed his motorbike in Lesotho and needed surgery to insert a metal plate into his leg, The People reports. "I was really lucky because it was a clean break," he said. "If there had been fragments of bone, the surgery would have been a lot more complicated. Something - probably a patch of water - sent my wheel flying and the bike started to fall, (more)...

According to the James Bond fan site, MI6, James Bond could be shooting this November in South Africa.
According to the site, former cricket player Darren Gough was on a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa and spotted director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli on the same flight to the region.
Actor Nigel Lindsay sort of confirmed this news - he says he was visited by Mendes on the set of London's Shrek: The Musical and was told he was heading out to prep for 007 shooting.
So, we put two and two together - he was on a flight to Johannesburg and was also headed out to prep for 007 shooting - sounds like all the pieces fit.
No official word - right now this is purely a rumor. We'll update you when we hear more.

Oh, the conversations that can be overheard during a flight. Former England international cricketer Darren Gough overheard a conversation between James Bond 23 director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli as he sat next to them in first class of a Virgin flight to Johannesburg this week. Gough explained the pair was traveling to scout for locations for the film. It is not known where in South Africa the director and producer plan to visit. James Bond has never had an adventure in South Africa, although the villains Wint and Kidd visited the country in 1971’s “Diamonds Are Forever.” South Africa has often been rumored as a possible location for a James Bond film. The country is very popular for film productions due to financial incentives. In 2006’s “Casino Royale,” the producers planned to shoot part of the film in South Africa, but the plans changed during mid-production. The twenty-third...

Director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli are said to be currently in South Africa scouting locations for the next James Bond film reports MI6-hq.com.
The news comes from international cricketer Darren Gough who sat next to the pair on a flight to Johannesburg this week. South Africa has been a long-rumoured location for a future 007 adventure and at one time "Casino Royale" was supposed to film there.
1971's "Diamonds Are Forever" had scenes set in the country but they were brief, only involved supporting characters and were actually shot in the desert near Las Vegas.

MI6 , the premiere James Bond site on the 'net, has gotten some interesting information about the currently-untitled James Bond 23 , which is scheduled to start shooting this November for a November 2012 release. Apparently, former cricket player Darren Gough was on a Virgin flight to Johannesburg, South Africa earlier today and he spotted director Sam Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli en route there. Confirmation came from an equally odd source, actor Nigel Lindsay who was visited by Mendes on the set of the London production of "Shrek: The Musical" and was told he was heading off to prep for 007 shooting. Of course, until someone actually spots the duo location scouting, this is all still rumor, but South Africa has long been rumored as a possible location for a...

Lilia Kopylova has admitted that she was "inconsolable" after having her role reduced on Strictly Come Dancing. The 32-year-old Russian, who won the show in 2005 with Darren Gough, was one of the professional dancers offered a part in a new dance troupe rather than a celebrity partner. Kopylova turned down the dance troupe offer, announcing that she was leaving the BBC One reality series last month. Her husband Darren Bennett will remain on the programme. Speaking about her departure, she told The Mirror: "I was inconsolable. When I rang the BBC and told them I didn't want to take the new role on Strictly, I felt incredibly emotional. (more)...

Matthew Cutler and Lilya Kopylova have quit BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, after a huge shake up of the reality TV show.
The pair had been dropped from the main line up and were told they would not be partnering celebrities this year. Instead they were offered a place on a dance troupe, who would undertake weekly performances and be paid only by the dance. They followed in the footsteps of Brian Fortuna who quit last month and turned the offer down.
Speaking about his departure, Cutler said: “I’ve absolutely loved my time on Strictly, and now is a good time to focus on developing new areas of my career. I’m excited about having more time to commit to new projects, and of course, still having a hand in Strictly without all the training!”
Kopylova added: “I will miss it, but I am looking forward to new opportunities ahead.

Former Strictly Come Dancing winner Darren Gough has claimed that Alesha Dixon needs to offer harsher judgements on the show. The retired cricketer, who triumphed with professional dancer Lilia Kopylova on the 2005 series, spoke out following the controversy surrounding Dixon's debut as a panellist on the programme. Speaking to Pa, Gough commented: "I think some of the stick she's taken has been a little bit too far, but she's got to improve and if you're going to be honest about it, she's got to be more critical."
