I recently wrote about the surprise Best Supporting Actress Oscar win by Anna Paquin for 1993’s “The Piano.” At 11 years of age, she became the second youngest competitive Academy Award recipient in history. She remains the last child Oscar champ, though several have since been nominated.
The record for the youngest competitive Oscar victory by a child (someone age 17 or younger) was actually set two decades before the practically hyperventilating Paquin accepted her statuette. And it was in the same category — Best Supporting Actress. Ten-year-old Tatum O’Neal, daughter of the late Ryan O’Neal (a Best Actor nominee for 1970’s “Love Story”), delivered a performance in “Paper Moon” that was loved enough by the academy to bring her the coveted award. The younger O’Neal played Addie Loggins, a child turned con artist who teams up with a man posing as her father during The Great Depression. She was nominated alongside...

Thanks to a new preview of the episode, fans of the X-Men will finally get to see Rogue at her full strength as she goes completely “rogue” after the Genosha massacre.
Disney+’s X-Men ’97

Luckily, X-Men ’97 doesn’t seem to have any problem showing Rogue’s true personality and fans couldn’t be happier.

Anna Paquin’s acting journey began on a high note after she landed the role of Flora McGrath in the 1993 historical drama The Piano. Marking her feature film debut, the movie was a huge hit and earned three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actress for Paquin, making her one of the youngest actors ever to receive such an honor.
The Piano (1993)
She has since continued to demonstrate her acting prowess in numerous films. However, winning the industry’s most prestigious award for her first film at 11 was undoubtedly overwhelming for the young star. Later in an interview, Paquin reflected on her emotions at the time and recounted how she nearly violated an Oscar protocol after receiving her award.

Anna Paquin has been open about showing interest in the 1993 film as it allowed her to take a break from school.

Actor and X-Men star Anna Paquin won an Academy Award at a very early age. But after receiving the coveted prize, she became a little self-conscious with the idea of being an Oscar-winner.

Halle Berry wasn’t the only Oscar-winner who was a part of Fox’s original X-Men franchise. Anna Paquin, who played the young mutant Rogue, also knew what it was like to win the trophy. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 1993 movie The Piano. She was only 11-years-old at the time, and perhaps what made her win more impressive was that it was her first feature film.
Paquin had no ambitions to be an actor at the time of her victory. She was only interested in the role because it meant she could take time off from school.

Anna Paquin is telling the truth about those scenes in “True Blood.”
The sultry HBO series, which debuted in 2008 and concluded in 2014, marked when Paquin met now-husband and co-star Stephen Moyer, who later began directing episodes. The duo told The Post that things in fact did not get “awkward” despite Moyer having to oversee intimate sequences involving wife Paquin and fellow actors Joe Manganiello and Alexander Skarsgard.
“Stephen cut his teeth directing [on ‘True Blood’] and by Season 3 or 4, it would be like, ‘Hi honey, who are you fucking on camera today?'” Paquin said. “Steve started directing me when we were on ‘True Blood,’ and in Season 7, our final season, he directed the season opener, which had [my character] Sookie in love with the giant beautiful werewolf, Joe Manganiello. Steve directed us in a rather explicit sex scene, so when you ask if it is awkward to shoot a movie with your husband,...

“You know, True Blood, I mean, it holds a special special place in my heart. My career sort of took off in a way that it hadn’t before that show, and so we all bonded. We made True Blood kind of in a vacuum, and then it aired. […] We weren’t even together. So, we all like bonded over that show,...

This November, after three full years of waiting, fans of FX’s “Fargo” will be treated to a brand new season. Unlike the anthology series’ fourth iteration, which served as a prequel to its first two, the upcoming fifth batch of episodes will tell an entirely original Midwestern crime story. Leading the season’s star-studded cast is Jon Hamm, who has his sights set on earning his first Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor Golden Globe nomination this winter. Since he was already honored in the corresponding drama series category for “Mad Men” in 2008 and 2016, his possible new victory would make him the seventh man to clinch Golden Globes for performances on both continuing and non-continuing TV programs.
Hamm, who picked up four additional Golden Globe bids for “Mad Men” between 2009 and 2013, has already begun his splashy 2023 return to prestige TV by playing a new supporting role on the third season of “The Morning Show.

Toronto, Sep 6 (Ians) Spending more time on digital media from Netflix to Instagram to video games may not cause any change in the frequency of psychotic experiences over time, finds study.
However, the study showed that individuals with a tendency for higher levels of digital media use also had a tendency for higher levels of psychotic experiences
The study, published in Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology, defined “psychotic experiences” as a range of unusual thoughts and perceptions, such as the belief of being in danger and the experience of hearing and seeing things that other people cannot see or hear. These experiences are relatively common, affecting about 5 per cent of young adults.
“Our findings are reassuring because they do not show evidence that digital media can cause or exacerbate psychotic experiences in young people. It is important to keep in mind that each person is different. In some situations, digital...

Jane Campion had to comfort Sam Neill on “The Piano” set.
Neill wrote in his upcoming memoir “Did I Ever Tell You This?” that collaborating with Campion was one of the highlights of his career since “An Angel at My Table” was “without question for me the most important film made to that point in New Zealand.”
“Of course, I would work with Jane at the drop of a hat,” Neill penned, calling Campion a “marvelous collaborator” during the 1993 film “The Piano.” However, production proved to be especially “lonely” for Neill given his character’s relationship to the other cast members, as Neill’s Alisdair had a fraught marriage with Holly Hunter’s Ada and her young daughter, played by Anna Paquin.
“It was an uncommonly lonely job for me. Holly and I got along fine. But she was of necessity remote. I understand it,” Neill explained. “She commits to a role,...

The 70th Academy Award ceremony on March 23, 1998, is the most-watched Oscar ceremony to date — most likely due to a “Titanic” film nominated for several awards. However, Gil Gates, who produced 14 Oscar ceremonies between 1990 and 2008, also wanted a special segment to recognize Oscar’s platinum anniversary, and arranged for 70 past acting winners to sit together on the stage, with Norman Rose announcing the films for which each performer won. It was a spectacular gathering of actors and actresses from Classic Hollywood, New Hollywood and the contemporary period.

True Blood is not returning on HBO.
Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.
Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.
Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.
It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.
Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

There’s surely no feeling in the world quite like winning an Oscar– that heady, unfiltered hit of professional validation that so many actors desperately crave.
But what of those who aren’t so lucky? For every Oscar winner, there must be a handful of losers, deserving or sometimes undeserving also-rans whose work was collectively deemed to have fallen short.
While actors are often skilled at disguising their disappointment – this is show business, after all – sometimes they let their real feelings slip through.
Whether it’s via side-eye glances that seem to throw shade on the winner, or simply muttering expletives, there have been many Oscar losses that prompted reactions which live on in infamy.
These aren’t the sorest losers, necessarily, but rather actors who didn’t adhere to the staid conventions of dignified loserdom.

Awards season always turns up note-worthy moments: showstopping outfits, witty speeches or egregious faux-pas are instantly turned into memes and circulated endlessly on social media.
In 2021, one moment in particular captivated viewers worldwide, and that was watching eight-year-old actor Alan Kim – dressed in a tuxedo – tear up while accepting a Critics Choice Award for his scene-stealing part in the critically acclaimed film Minari.
After a successful season, however, which included a Bafta nod, the young star was eventually shut out of the Oscars. It was a shame – in a year of history-making nominations for the Academy Awards, seeing Kim recognised would have been the cherry on top.
But it was always a long shot. Child actors are a welcome but infrequent inclusion at the Oscars – their rarity though, does make every instance especially memorable.

It was up to supervising sound editors Will Files and Matt Yocum and dialogue and Adr supervisor Eliza Zebert to build the soundscape for Korean War-set “Devotion,” a story that centers on the friendship between Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) the first Black aviator in U.S. Navy history, and fellow fighter pilot Tom Hudner (Glen Powell).
Yocum, an alumnus of Savannah College of Art and Design, was able to record a real 1950 F4U Corsair, making it period-correct. “It was important for us to get authentic sound to feel the weight and visceral quality of these aircraft, because, at the end of the day, they are characters in the film that had to be brought to life and participate in the story with Tom Hudner, Jesse Brown and the other pilots,” he says.
To collect the sounds, Yocum flew to the Erickson Aircraft Collection in Oregon with friend and fellow sound expert Kai Paquin.

When Cameron Crowe was 15, he became the youngest journalist to write for Rolling Stone Magazine. Throughout his adolescence, he interviewed many iconic musicians of the '70s, including Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, and Elton John. In 1981, he adapted his book "Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story" into a screenplay, and seven years later, he added Hollywood director to his resume with the release of "Say Anything."
The writer has a natural affection for "the little guy" and a seemingly never-ending ability to create unlikely heroes with universal appeal. Before he fell in love with music, Crowe told Rolling Stone he was a precocious boy who was sheltered by a mother who thought rock and roll was "s*** disguised as candy." In typical teenage fashion, he rebelled against her beliefs by secretly reading Creem, Rolling Stone, and the San Diego Door, and carved his own path in life through writing and music.

Exclusive: The new iteration of The CW is starting to take shape.
Two and a half months after Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in the broadcaster, the new owners are starting to make moves that will determine its programming mix and who will be leading this charge.
Chief among these include the search for a top programming executive, a re-tooling of its scripted lineup and a drive to greenlight more unscripted formats.
This comes after a major round of layoffs at the company as well as the departure of long-term execs such as streaming and branding chief Rick Haskins, ad chief Mitch Nedick and comms chief Paul Hewitt.
Earlier this month, Dennis Miller was named President of The CW Network, replacing Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. Deadline understands that he has been leading a search for a programming boss with executives such as former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz...

Lio Tipton seems to be playing a fictional character in Peacock’s psychological thriller limited series “A Friend of the Family,” based on true events. But, as the Nick Antosca-created show proves, sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction.
Actor Tipton, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, portrays Latter Day Saints housewife Gail Berchtold, who seems to have the perfect life: a handsome husband (Jake Lacy), five adorable children, and kind neighbors, the Brobergs (Colin Hanks and Anna Paquin). Yet when Gail’s spouse Bob “Brother B” grooms and repeatedly kidnaps the young Jan Broberg, Gail’s own abusive relationship with Bob comes to light.
“It was really hard. There is nothing decisive in where she stands,” Lipton said of Gail. “The person I was representing in a big way was the most fictional representation of any of the characters. Because of that, I tried to...

The predicted TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup for the Golden Globes has remained consistent for quite a while — Evan Peters (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”), Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Sebastian Stan (“Pam and Tommy”), Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”) and Colin Firth (“The Staircase”) — all for playing real life characters. But don’t be surprised to see another name break through on this list, especially if the Globes have the opportunity to reward him first (something the Hollywood Foreign Press lives for).
Fresh off his first Emmy nomination for “The White Lotus” earlier this year, Jake Lacy is thrilling critics again in the Peacock original true crime series, “A Friend of the Family.” He plays Robert “B” Berchtold, a close friend and neighbor of the Broberg family. In 1974, he kidnaps their daughter Jan at age 12, and shockingly manipulates his way back into their good graces and kidnaps...

Certain roles seem like they’d make an actor pause before signing on. And Jake Lacy notes he was asked whether playing pedophile Robert Berchtold, the man found to have kidnapped Jan Broberg Felt twice during her adolescent years, was a good idea. While speaking to IndieWire via Zoom, Lacy recounts how co-star Anna Paquin asked him if he or his representatives worried about him taking on the role. It’s a valid question, especially considering Lacy, prior to this year, has mostly been known for playing very sweet Good Guys.
But to hear Lacy recount the story, that was exactly what he was looking for from the part. “He [Berchtold] thinks he’s Steve McQueen,” Lacy said to IndieWire. “There’s so much to dive into. I get to be the force that changes the story.” He certainly does that. Playing Berchtold required Lacy to not only be despicable, but...

Despite being best known for his role as the surly mutant Wolverine, Hugh Jackman actually has a reputation for being one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. Nobody has a bad word to say about the star of such films as "The Prestige" and "Les Misérables," making the fact that his most famous role is as the grumpiest X-Man a little ironic.
Having played the role since 2000, Jackman and Wolverine have become one and the same in the minds of many people. His portrayal of the character is so popular that he finds himself unable to retire from the role, now being brought back for the upcoming "Deadpool 3" just because people think it'd be cool for Wolverine to hang out with The Merc with The Mouth.
Jackman's first film in the role was Bryan Singer's "X-Men," a movie which is often credited with kickstarting the modern popularity of superhero movies.

This opening is usually where a disclaimer goes. For a series like “A Friend of the Family,” one that dramatizes the events behind a story that came to public attention through an acclaimed (or at least widely-seen) documentary, it’s almost second nature now to start off any discussion with a acknowledgment that many of the details are an open matter. Anyone who wants to know the story beforehand (particularly those who might want to avoid certain subject matter the story addresses) can easily find a concise summary with a few clicks.
Creators will go to great lengths to try to preserve a certain kind of viewing experience, one with twists unspoiled and jarring turns hidden. Amidst a sea of real-life stories of manipulation and grief and predation being turned into TV series, “A Friend of the Family” is one that stands out because it’s not constructed in that way.

The documentary to podcast to scripted series is now a familiar progression for those of us who can’t help but blast blue light into our eyes at night, plunging into one true crime rabbit hole or another instead of sleeping. It’s no longer enough to consume a real-life travesty just for the facts; we need to obsess over the really juicy ones from every angle, from the lurid to the topical to the philosophical.
The latest now-familiar story to make the final stop on the all-platforms content cycle — the A-list scripted limited series — is the story of Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped twice as a child by her neighbor Robert Berchtold, and is now chronicled in “A Friend of the Family.”
Skye Borgman’s Netflix documentary “Abducted In Plain Sight” first introduced this strange, maddening story to a mass audience, leaving viewers with outrage and righteous judgment, the...

In Peacock’s true-crime drama “A Friend of the Family,” Bob Broberg (Colin Hanks) pleads with his wife Mary Ann (Anna Paquin) to help him understand her egregious lapse in judgment. “Don’t you have better sense? It doesn’t make any sense…why would you do such a thing?” Those also happen to be the questions bandied about on Twitter when “Abducted in Plain Sight,” a 2017 documentary about the Brobergs, went viral after landing on Netflix. According to what passes for consensus on social media, while the Brobergs endured a horrible ordeal, they bear most of the responsibility because of the unconscionable decisions they made.
“A Friend of the Family” is written with an acute awareness of the backlash that met the Brobergs after they shared how they were manipulated and nearly destroyed by a malignant narcissist. It begins with a statement from the Brobergs daughter Jan, the primary victim in the story,...

Plot: Inspired by the harrowing true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of a few years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend”.
Review: There does not seem to be any end in sight for the current wave of true crime event series populating streaming services these days. While some are better than others, there are still some genuinely disturbing stories that have been told recently. Documentaries always have an advantage in the realm of true crime, but a well-made narrative series can chill you as much as entertain. A Friend of the Family, from producer Nick Antosca, is one of the most shocking and disturbing true crime stories I have ever heard and offers a well-made look at a story that is too crazy not to be true. With a great cast and the actual victim of the crime on board as a producer,...

Awards season always turns up note-worthy moments: showstopping outfits, witty speeches or egregious faux-pas are instantly turned into memes and circulated endlessly on social media.
But so far this year, one moment in particular has captivated viewers worldwide and that was watching eight-year-old actor Alan Kim – dressed in a tuxedo – tear up while accepting a Critics Choice Award for his scene-stealing part in the critically acclaimed film Minari.
After a successful season, however, which included a Bafta nod, the young star was eventually shut out of the Oscars. It is a shame – in a year of history-making nominations for the Academy Awards, seeing Kim recognised would have been the cherry on top. But it was always a long shot. Child actors are a welcome but infrequent inclusion at the Oscars – their rarity though, does make every instance especially memorable.
