Burn Notice Season 6 Episode 16: Odd Man Out
Burn Notice has been filled to the brim with annoying characters this season. Tom Card (John C. McGinley) was rightfully shot in the head in the mid-season finale, “Means & Ends” and whenever I see Agent Olivia Riley (Sonja Sohn), her one-note overacting makes me want to yank my television off my wall, climb up a flight of stairs to “clean and jerk” it out of my third-story window. I know, I know, Sohn was on The Wire, but can we give her a little more range to work with here? Oh and by the way, we get two hours of her tough girl act in the season finale. But the award for the most annoying character this season – and perhaps all of the seasons – has to go to Colin Schmidt, played by comedian Patton Oswalt.

We often joke about Burn Notice being stuck in its formula but we’ve noted that Season 6 has been superbly different with a more serious tone and a focused Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) risking his own life and limbs to get Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) out of jail. TV spots warned us that episode 606, “Shock Wave” would bring death to the show and the inclination is to suspect Agent Pearce (Lauren Stamile) or Agent Card (John C. McGinley) would take the fall because most viewers don’t expect to have a significant death this early in the season. But we didn’t get one big death, we got two.
Agents Pearce and Card would certainly give Michael a duty of loyalty to fulfill, to see to it that their killer would be found if their time was indeed up–we saw how Michael reacted to Max’s death, even though he was framed for it.

The second season finale seemed to promise a third that would see Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) dodging attacks from every side as his supposed protection from the CIA vanished after his declaration of autonomy in a helicopter over the ocean. Management (John Mahoney), as the white-haired honcho with a plan is called, warns Michael that by swearing off his protection, every enemy Michael every had would come looking for him, as we’re to believe that he’s been off the radar ever since his burn notice – though many different enemies showed up on his doorstep anyways. Either way, Management promised a season that would see Westen dodging bullets from every angle; instead the season goes back to business as usual and seems to take a different direction altogether: with a new law bully looking over his shoulder, a new conspiracy to foil, and lots and lots of people who need his help.

Following eight episodes, Burn Notice wraps up with an installment that finds Michael realizing the true price of getting his job back, and it could cost him everything.
Last time we saw Burn Notice, Barry (Paul Tei) enlisted Michael's (Jeffrey Donovan) help in tracking down his money-laundering client list, which has been stolen by a vicious thief. Michael went after the thief only to find that the task wasn't all that it seemed. Meanwhile, Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar) tried to be supportive of Michael's decision to reconnect with the intelligence community, but she and Michael realized that their differences on the issue may not be reconcilable.
