★☆☆☆☆ Regurgitating elements of both the horror and western genres into a hideous example of grindhouse gone wrong, Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro's Beyond the Grave (2010) is an abysmal post-apocalyptic revenge thriller. In a desolate dystopia ravaged by some unspecified disaster, a merciless former-police officer (Rafael Tombini) is searching for a possessed killer. In a world where black magic dictates the tempo of everyday life and zombies roam freely like disoriented pedestrians, this is a road trip through the eerily deserted boondocks of Hell - where deliverance from evil is a wishful delusion.
As he embarks on his 'life or death' mission to find this supernatural serial killer, Tombini runs into violent cowboys, a sword-wielding assassin, two lost teenagers and a former blind colleague now infected and motivated merely by the taste of human flesh. Amalgamating choice cuts from Tarantino's oeuvre, Jodorowsky's El Topo (1970) and even Stephen King's The Stand,...

Porto dos Mortos (Beyond The Grave)
Written by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro
Directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro
Brazil, 2010
There’s a fundamental problem with a film that eschews internal coherency for existential pondering. Such is the state of affairs with Porto dos Mortos, a 2010 Brazilian horror effort. The film starts off yearning to be existentially important and finishes hoping that it has proven that it is an existentially great film. Most cinephiles will tell you that the existentially great films are great not because of their willingness to be existential but because of their willingness to simply be. It’s not a highfalutin concept mind you, it’s the simple matter of a movie being as true to itself as it possibly can be. Yearning to be accepted as existential flies in the face of a film being true to itself. Porto dos Mortos feels and plays as false...

Stars: Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa, Ricardo Seffner, Amanda Lerias, Luciana Verch, Leandro Lefa, Tatiana Paganella, Adriano Basegio | Written and Directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro
“In a devastated post-apocalyptic world where the rules of reality are transformed by magic and madness, a vengeful police officer searches for a possessed serial killer in a battle of the not-so-good versus absolute evil”
Films that feature zombies can be quite interesting, they tend to have different styles based on which part of the world they are based in. Beyond the Grave is a zombie film originating in Brazil and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro and he creates a film where zombies are in ways nothing more than a background menace to the main plot, which itself is more interesting than the average story of the undead.
The main character of the piece is only known as the police officer,...

It was in 2008 when we first heard about Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro's Beyond the Grave (Porto Dos Mortos), but things appear to be back on track for the Brazilian film as it's screening at the Chicago Latino Film Festival on April 21st and 26th.
Written and directed by Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro (who also produced with Isidoro B. Guggiana), Beyond the Grave follows the unstoppable hunt of a vengeful cop (Rafael Tombini) for a supernatural serial killer. Director/writer: Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro.
Cast: Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa and Ricardo Seffner.
Portos dos Mortos or Beyond the Grave is currently making the rounds on the film festival circuits in North America. A more accurate translation of the Portuegese title is Portals of the Dead and this film is from Brazilian director Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro. Pinheiro has developed a suitable action thriller here set in a zombie apocalypse. The desolate locales and makeup effects highlight the apocalypse, while a western genred film tries to develop in the character's dress and armaments. The characters are what made this film interesting to one reviewer and fans of indie zombie fiction should seek this film out.
