Line of Duty is over, perhaps for good. It’s time to dismantle that evidence wall, file the exhibits away, and close the door on AC-12. With H unmasked, we can all rest our adrenal glands and get back to a healthy, Jimmy Nesbitt-free sleep pattern.
Once that’s achieved, if you start to feel the itch for more seismic shocks and sleights-of-hand, here are a few suggestions of what to watch next – eight TV thrillers that provide similar doses of double-dealing, truth-concealing, witness-squealing, case-breaking shenanigans. Add your own recommendations below!

Bodyguard proved that there was life after the Red Wedding for Richard Madden. His performance as David Budd, a former combat soldier living a new – and equally dangerous – life as a Principal Protection Officer (Ppo) in the London Met deservedly netted him a Golden Globe and a Scottish Bafta award.

Bodyguard has become the BBC’s first series to be nominated for an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy in nearly 50 years.
The thriller, which aired in the U.S. via Netflix as part of its co-licensing model, where it picked it up at “script stage”, was originally produced by ITV-owned producer World Productions for the British public broadcaster.
While rival ITV has been nominated in the category as recently as 2016 for season six of Downton Abbey, and Netflix picked up noms for its remake of BBC political drama House of Cards, the BBC has to go back to 1972 when Glenda Jackson-fronted drama Elizabeth R, aired by PBS in the U.S. for its original nomination in the main drama category. Strangely, that year BBC drama The Six Wives of Henry VIII, a limited series that aired on CBS, was also nominated.

A month ago our Emmy Experts thought Best Drama Actor was a two-way race between Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), while only one was betting on an upset by Richard Madden (“Bodyguard”). Then a couple of weeks ago two Experts were predicting Madden. Well, the Scottish actor is still gaining ground as we get closer and closer to the Emmy nominations, which will be announced on July 16. Now four of those elite journalists think he will prevail.
As of this writing, Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Mary Murphy (Gold Derby), Robert Rorke (New York Post) and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) think Madden will win for his title role as battle-scarred soldier David Budd, who is tasked with protecting a controversial politician (Keeley Hawes) after preventing a suicide bombing on a train. He won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his performance, and he was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award.

This time last year, Richard Madden was best known for his brutal death in the Red Wedding episode of Game of Thrones. But after the first episode of Jed Mercurio’s six-part action drama Bodyguard aired, the Scottish actor became a household name practically overnight as David Budd, the buttoned-down personal protection officer drawn into a high-level conspiracy. Madden presented a damaged everyman for these turbulent political times—an image he promptly turned on its head with his portrayal of Elton John’s ex-lover in the pop biopic Rocketman.

Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio has lifted the lid on the future of the BBC/Netflix drama as well as possible future opportunities with U.S. broadcasters and how his own production company is getting on.
Mercurio was speaking with Deadline at the Banff World Media Festival, said that he was “going through the logistics” of a second season of the Richard Madden-fronted terror drama, which aired on BBC in the UK and Netflix globally. He confirmed that he was in talks with the British public broadcaster but that it hasn’t been officially commissioned for a second season.
Star Madden has previously talked about conversations with Mercurio about future episodes, as long as his character, David Budd, can have a holiday first.
He added that he may consider opportunities to work in the U.S. and globally now that he has got his cop thriller Line of Duty running smoothly on BBC One.

For editor Steve Singleton, Bodyguard writer/creator Jed Mercurio’s “master stroke” was to skip a conventional opening and start the series with a nail-biting scene during which police sergeant David Budd (Richard Madden) is traveling with his kids on a London-bound train when he discovers a suicide bomber.
“The viewer was immediately taken down a tense and dangerous path with an unknown person and discovered much about his character and personality issues along the way,” Singleton says of the BBC series, available in the U.S. on Netflix.

The idea of using traditional thriller tropes in a TV show can be a tricky one. Unlike action movies, in which the story is typically used to string together elaborately choreographed fight scenes long enough for the hero to limp off into the sunset, with a series, the action has to be balanced out with the larger story, while the consequences of any shootouts or sword fights will ripple through the narrative long after the smoke clears.
But utilizing action on the small screen can heighten and subvert the storytelling and help elevate the medium. While there are obvious big-budget contenders, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” others, such as BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” AMC’s “Into the Badlands” and Netflix’s “Ozark,” all utilize action-thriller elements as a method to amplify their storytelling, rather than overshadow it.

Season 1, Episode 2
Gypsy (Joey King), a Munchausen by proxy victim, knows on some level that she doesn’t need all the medical assistance she’s been getting. But to live without it is a betrayal of her mother, and a step into the scary unknown. Her doctor (Poorna Jagannathan) offers Gypsy a soda to test her “sugar allergy” and, after agonizing thought, Gypsy refuses even to try it, saying in a strangled whisper, “My mom needs me.” It’s a choice that cements both her and her mother’s tragic fates.

“What does panic sound like?” That’s the main question Emmy-nominated composer Ruth Barrett wanted to solve when scoring the hit BBC/Netflix political thriller “Bodyguard.” “I was trying to tap into what is that sound,” she explains, which became the key to unlocking the show’s dramatic underscore. “That’s how we distilled it, with these modular synth sounds and this muscular brass sound underneath,” Barrett reveals. “It heightens the experience. So you’re already terrified; I was terrified watching it without any music, and then I was like what can I do to this to heighten that?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Barrett above.

“We wanted to meld the political thriller with the cop show,” reveals writer/creator Jed Mercurio about his acclaimed hit action drama “Bodyguard.” Ever since it became a ratings powerhouse for the BBC last year, the show has won over critics and audiences globally on Netflix, and is often heralded for its propulsive pacing and high tension storytelling. “To hear things like ‘I forgot to breathe’ or ‘I just couldn’t move from my TV,’” Mercurio says, “is so thrilling to have that kind of response.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Mercurio above.

Bodyguard made him a star – but he hasn’t always been comfortable as the lead. He talks about bullies, his inner ‘fat lad’ and new Elton John biopic Rocketman
For some lucky actors, there are moments when their career suddenly shifts into a higher gear. The right part comes along, the world notices, and boom! their whole life is different. This happened to Richard Madden with Bodyguard, in August last year. He played the tight-mouthed, tight-muscled David Budd, personal minder to Keeley Hawes’ home secretary, Julia Montague, in Jed Mercurio’s six-part BBC One thriller, and the country went bananas.
Bodyguard was great TV – gripping, unpredictable, sexy, with a madly Ott finale – but nobody could have predicted the furore it would cause. It was a national event, achieving the BBC’s largest drama audience for a decade. Social media was aflame every Sunday, with much of the heat centred on Madden,...

Emmy support for British imports are always hard to measure. And with the surfeit of Netflix content, many worthy series get buried there, even with a push from the awards team. But BBC breakout “Bodyguard” is such a popular word-of-mouth and social media sensation that star Richard Madden has broken into contention, boosted by that unexpected Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama win at the Golden Globes.
Until now Madden, 32, was best-known for his career-launching “Game of Thrones” role almost a decade back as princely Robb Stark, who met an untimely demise in Season Three’s Red Wedding. In Netflix’s “Bodyguard,” he plays David Budd, a tightly-wound, shell-shocked war veteran turned police sergeant who is assigned to protect the controversial home secretary, Rt. Hon. Julia Montague MP (Keeley Hawes), whose political views he profoundly disavows. But she doesn’t know that when they fall into a lusty clandestine affair.

Richard Madden is currently poised to nab a Best Drama Actor Primetime Emmy Award nomination for playing David Budd in the BBC One/Netflix series “Bodyguard,” sitting in fourth place in our combined Emmy odds. He’s behind Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) in first place, Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) in second place and Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) in third place; Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”) is in fifth and Milo Ventimiglia (“This Is Us”) in sixth. But here are five reasons why you may be underestimating Madden’s chances:
1. Accessibility and visibility
After its initial August-to-September run on BBC One, “Bodyguard”‘s six-episode first season was made available to audiences outside of the UK and Ireland on Netflix, which dropped the entire season on Oct. 26. Madden could benefit from wide-range visibility, given that the show is now easily accessible to Emmy voters.

"Bodyguard" star Richard Madden has quashed rumours that he is the next James Bond. He dismissed the buzz by saying: "It's all just noise." In an interview to Elle Magazine, the 32 year-old actor spoke about his upcoming film Rocketman and how claims that he could be the next Bond are simply an after-effect of his role as Sergeant David Budd in "Bodyguard", reports dailymail.co.uk.
He said: "It's all just noise. By March, there will be another British TV show with another young male actor, and then he'll be the next James Bond for the following two months."

The BBC series, which is an absolute must-watch if you haven’t seen it, places Madden into the shoes of Sergeant David Budd, an Afghanistan war veteran turned bodyguard whose sole purpose is to safeguard the Home Secretary at all times.
It’s a role that contains a lot of striking parallels with a certain 007, so it’s small wonder why Madden’s name has been tossed into the proverbial hat to be the next James Bond. In fact, according to sources close to the Daily Mail (!), the BBC isn’t about to fast-track season 2 of Bodyguard since Madden’s now among those being eyed to succeed Daniel Craig as the iconic super-spy.

Congratulations are in order for the very fine, very talented Richard Madden, who just nabbed a Golden Globe for best performance by an actor in a television series in the drama category for his work on Bodyguard! Prior to appearing on the BBC thriller series, many pop culture fans may know the young actor from his previous work on Game of Thrones and in Disney's live-action version of Cinderella.
Alongside a talented cast on Bodyguard, he plays Sergeant David Budd, a war veteran who must guard a steely senior official whose politics goes against his own. Scroll on to see him in action - quite literally because of his role - in one of the best English TV shows out there.

The BBC had a successful night at the Golden Globes with wins for Bodyguard’s Richard Madden and A Very English Scandal’s Ben Whishaw.
Charlotte Moore, Director of Content at the British public broadcaster said that it was “delighted to be flying the flag for British stories and British talent in an increasingly competitive market”.
She added, “It’s fantastic to see BBC drama and exceptional British creativity recognised at the Golden Globes. It’s been a great year for the BBC with a series of big hits that have resonated with audiences at home and around the world.”
Madden scored an upset in the Best Actor in a Drama Series category by beating Ozark‘s Jason Bateman — Stephan James (Homecoming), Billy Porter (Pose) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans) to pick up his first Globe win.

Winning his first Golden Globe tonight for Best Actor in a TV Drama series for Netflix/BBC’s Bodyguard, Scottish-born actor Richard Madden continued to wave off rumors that he’s going to succeed Daniel Craig in MGM’s James Bond series.
“It’s just rumors,” said the actor when asked if martinis were in his future.
Recently, the Game of Thrones vet was asked the same 007 question by the New York Times saying,”You know, I’ll see what happens in the future. Yeah, I think we’ll deal with that when we get to it.”

Not too many people had penciled in Richard Madden to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama Series — including the man himself. And he said so from the stage.
Game of Thrones‘ alum Madden topped a field of which only one person — Ozark‘s Jason Bateman — also was nominated in the category last year. The also-rans this go-round were Stephan James (Homecoming), Billy Porter (Pose) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). It was Madden’s first career Globe win and nomination. Rhys won the comedy actor Emmy in September for the final season of FX’s Cold War spy thriller.
The BBC politcal thriller, which streams on Netflix, is set in and around the corridors of power. Bodyguard follows David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service.

Up against a crowded field, Richard Madden won Best Actor in a TV Drama on Sunday night at the 76th Golden Globes.
The category had one of the most wide-open collections of nominees at this year’s awards, with all five actors having a decent shot at taking home at statue. Ultimately, Madden won on his first try for playing David Budd in “Bodyguard,” a security guard who becomes more than just a hired hand for the British Home Secretary on the Netflix sleeper hit.
Madden thanked co-star Keeley Hawes and his parents, who he said flew all the way from Scotland for the evening.

“I loved playing with the audience,” reveals Richard Madden in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about his acclaimed role on Netflix’s British action thriller “Bodyguard.” “This moral ambiguity he has, with this grey zone he operates in,” he explains, “I loved playing that.”
In “Bodyguard,” Madden plays Sergeant David Budd, a heroic army vet thrown back into the front line as he is assigned to protect UK Home Secretary Julia Monague (Keeley Hawes), a high profile politician that he initially despises. The series is a tense and riveting portrait of a man suffering with debilitating Ptsd in a world plagued by constant threats of terror attacks. It has been a huge success locally and internationally, as it twists and turns over six dynamite episodes to a conclusion that many do not see coming.

As we head into awards season now, one television show that’s picking up an awful lot of buzz and recognition is the hit political thriller Bodyguard.
Starring Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, the series follows his character David Budd, who’s assigned to protect the Conservative party’s Home Secretary. Though it begins as a fairly routine job, he soon finds himself falling deeper and deeper into a web of corruption, deception and a plot to assassinate the very person he’s supposed to keep out of harm’s way.
With fantastic acting, tight pacing and non-stop edge of your seat thrills, Bodyguard presented a first season full of twists and turns that culminated in an explosive final episode which left viewers wanting more. However, there’s still been no word on if we’ll get another outing or not. Despite this, Madden remains hopeful, telling Ellen DeGeneres the...

British phenomenon Bodyguard has exploded on to the Golden Globes nominations with two nods including a somewhat surprising inclusion in the Drama category.
The Jed Mercurio-penned series led a good morning for Brits with Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal also scoring highly with HFPA members.
Bodyguard, which is produced by ITV-owned World Productions, is thought to be the first truly original BBC drama to be nominated in the Best Television Series – Drama category at the Golden Globes. The six-part show airs on Netflix in the UK and while the Svod service is understood to have been a partner since the show’s early production stages, it was picked up by Netflix’s co-licensing team.

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, “Bodyguard” star Richard Madden sits down with Variety‘s features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, to talk about playing a former soldier with Ptsd, who is tasked with protecting Britain’s Home Secretary.
“In a lot of movies and television we see Ptsd as someone closes a door too loud or a car backfires and our subject suddenly is transported back to Afghanistan in the middle of this fighting and men are dying,” Madden says. “That does happen sometimes for people with Ptsd — they have flashbacks like that — but that’s not the only thing that happens.”
Madden shares that he was most interested in bringing to life the daily struggle of someone in that position — the anxiety and depression that comes with the disorder.

After three seasons as Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones,” you might expect Richard Madden to aim for lighter fare. Instead, he’s the titular “Bodyguard,” the UK series that shattered ratings records during its initial run on BBC One, and has now found international success via (what else) Netflix.
As David Budd, the specialized protection officer tasked with protecting Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), the Scottish actor with the James Dean face is now a rumored contender to take over the role of James Bond. Both Budd and Bond are lawmen of few words. However, Madden said he considers the iconic British spy to be of another world altogether.

Not so long ago, it would seem the whole of Britain was on standstill on Sunday nights to watch Richard Madden in the BBC series ‘Bodyguard’. The nation was addicted to the tension each episode brought, and whose ending gave us the possibility of a second season.
With the dust now settled on the originally planned one-off series, due to its popularity and the brilliance of creator Jed Mercurio, Richard Madden has set tongues wagging by confirming to the Daily Mail that he will be imminently sitting down with Mercurio to discuss ideas for David Budd’s next traumatic adventure.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Netflix’s “Bodyguard” through the finale.)
David Budd needs a break. The lead character played by Richard Madden in BBC’s thriller series “Bodyguard” — which made its way stateside last month with a launch on Netflix — ended the show’s six-episode run totally spent. But you probably would be too if you were a Ptsd-plagued war vet turned Specialist Protection Officer for London’s Metropolitan Police Service, tasked with protecting Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) — before she was blown up in a terrorist attack.
Madden told TheWrap in a recent interview that Budd — who finds out in the finale that the person behind all of this was a woman who he underestimated in the first moments of the premiere — deserves to unwind if the show gets renewed for a second season.

Richard Madden might be best known in the Us as Robb Stark, the ill-fated king-in-waiting of Game of Thrones‘ first three seasons. But that may be about to change with the arrival a week ago on Netflix of Jed Mercurio’s Bodyguard, the BBC hit action drama, which became a national sensation on its release in August. When the finale aired in late September, some 11 million viewers were hooked, with the show capturing a 47.9% audience share in Great Britain. Even politicians commented on its portrayal of an ambitious Home Secretary and her ideologically-opposed personal protection officer, David Budd, played by Madden. A war vet with undiagnosed Ptsd, Budd is drawn into—and made the pawn of—a conspiracy that threatens to unseat the government.

(Spoilers ahead for the ending of the Netflix/BBC series “Bodyguard”)
There’s a lot to unravel once you reach the end of “Bodyguard,” the new Netflix limited series starring “Game of Thrones” alum Richard Madden. It’s a show full of red herrings and other robust misdirections, and by the time it’s all over your head very well may be spinning as you try to put together all the pieces. As you try to parse what in the hell just happened.
Don’t worry, because we’re here to help you pick through the madness and see the full picture of the six episodes of conspiracies and counter-conspiracies. It’s actually not all that complicated overall, but the way the show doles out information it can feel like way more of a convoluted mess than it really is. Like real life, “Bodyguard” is not a clean and straightforward story.

Political conspiracy thriller “Bodyguard” is Britain’s biggest TV hit in years, and it’s easy to see why. With Jed Mercurio’s suspenseful story and mesmerizing performances by Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes, it’s an intoxicating and addictive television cocktail. Netflix has released the first trailer for a great looking series called Bodyguard. The series stars Richard Madden (Robb Stark from Game of Thrones) as a secret service agent who is assigned to protect someone with political views he doesn’t agree with. This is the same actor who is said to be up for the role of James Bond after Daniel Craig is done, so this trailer will kind of give you an idea of what that might be like.
The series was already released in the UK where it was a big hit. I love what I’m seeing in this first trailer and I’ll definitely be binge-watching it when it’s released. The series comes with a compelling premise and some intense action. What’s there not to be excited about!? Here’s the synopsis:

After finding huge success in the United Kingdom, Bodyguard will make its way stateside on October 24 when it debuts on Netflix. The new trailer for the political thriller dropped today and features a wild amount of tensions rising between Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes.
Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic, but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?
The series also stars Gina McKee (Line of Duty), Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Pippa Haywood (Scott & Bailey...

Earlier this year, the BBC’s “Bodyguard” was a ratings sensation in the United Kingdom, with its finale garnering some 10.4 million viewers, higher ratings than any British broadcast short of the World Cup.
As the series arrives stateside on Netflix, it’s not hard to see why. The thriller star “Game of Thrones” alumnus Richard Madden as a security officer and military veteran who enters the series with no small amount of trauma and only builds up more scar tissue as it goes. Both juicy in its delving into character psychology and rippingly ready to tear up its playbook as it goes, it’s a six-episode ride that demands, and rewards, a quick binge, and one that is as likely as any of Netflix’s overseas imports to find a breakout audience.

The BBC drama “Bodyguard” bowed out on a high Sunday with 11 million viewers at its peak on BBC One, for a whopping 47.9% audience share. The six-part series, which Netflix is about to launch globally, is Britain’s most popular drama since “Downton Abbey.”
Starring Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Keeley Hawes (“The Durrells”), “Bodyguard” went out the gate strongly in the U.K., where it was the biggest launch for a scripted series in more than a decade.
Aside from soccer, the ratings for Sunday night’s finale make it the most-watched program of 2018 in Britain. It was the biggest drama across all channels since an episode of “Downton Abbey” on ITV in November 2011. For the BBC, it was the biggest drama since its Christmas Day episode of “Doctor Who” in 2008.
