NBCUniversal tried to harness two Fox News anchors in the recent past and failed. Now the company no doubt hopes the third time’s the charm.
The company’s CNBC on Wednesday evening launched former Fox News daytime anchor Shepard Smith in a new 7 p.m. news hour that, as Smith himself described it, aims to give viewers “journalists and experts, not opinions and pundits.” The business-news network clearly has some ambition for the new program. It hired a well-known producer, Molly Kordares, from “CBS Evening News,” lured Sally Ramirez, a top news executive from a major-market CBS affiliate in Houston, and assigned one of its veterans, Sandy Cannold, to oversee the project.

If you can imagine a version of The View devoted to politics — with a rotating collection of pundits including many of MSNBC’s usual suspects – then you have an idea of the show that Alex Wagner soon will host in the noon Et time slot now held by MSNBC Live. The news network doesn’t have a name yet for the program that’s due to launch in November. The plan is to announce it next week, although some details spilled last week in a memo obtained by TV Newser. Dana Haller will be the executive producer. On MSNBC Live Tuesday afternoon, Contessa Brewer interviewed National Journal congressional correspondent Major Garrett about the ways in which former members of Congress skirt lobbying rules. The jumping-off point was former Sen. Chris Dodd's recent hiring by the MPAA, and while the segment was insightful and informative, the highlight was the revelation that disgraced former Sen. Larry Craig, according to MSNBC's chyron, "Lobbying Against Wolves." Somebody call Kevin Costner, I smell a sequel!
