Four-time Academy Award-nominated Ethan Hawke is attached to star in “The Last of the Tribe,” a jungle thriller set in Brazil’s Amazon. Written by Mark Bailey, “The Last of the Tribe” is produced by Brazil’s Academy Award-nominated Fernando Meirelles and Academy Award-winning producer Ed Saxon.
Hawke is set to play William Phelan — a washed-out Chicago cop turned corporate gun-for-hire — who finds himself in a wildly unfamiliar landscape, his assignment the murder of the last surviving member of an uncontacted Indigenous tribe.
“A broken man standing at an unlikely crossroads, Phelan is given the chance to save a life and reclaim his soul,” the film’s synopsis runs.
Hawke will be joined by the Indigenous Brazilian actress-model Zaya Guarani, born in the Amazon’s Port Velho. Seen in Darren Aronofsky’s “Postcard From Earth,” the environmental activist has used her visibility as a fashion model to further her advocacy...

In Rory Kennedy’s four-part HBO documentary “The Synanon Fix,” the director explores Synanon, an organization formed in Santa Monica and designed to assist individuals struggling with drug addiction. Established in 1958 by Charles “Check” Dederich, a former alcoholic, Synanon was the country’s first in-patient rehabilitation center designed for people suffering from dependency issues. Dederich was among the first to try to have drug addicts help each other instead of relying on therapists or medications.
After attracting donations from people around the country who wanted to help the rehab facility, Synanon metastasized into a “nonprofit” with more than $30 million in assets including communal properties and farms in California. Members, who consisted of addicts was well as “squares” (non-drug users), were encouraged to participate in the Synanon Game, which was attack talk therapy. When the Oscar nominations came out last week, the Best Documentary Feature category contained some bombshells: no recognition for two of the most decorated nonfiction films of the year.
In the latest edition of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, co-hosts John Ridley and Matt Carey drill down on the nominations, examining the snubs of American Symphony and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie. Last October, White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced a decision to switch parties in his presidential bid by exiting the Democratic party and running as a third-party Independent. The move was quickly denounced by members of his own family, including Oscar-nominated documentarian Rory Kennedy, who joined her siblings in posting a family statement.
“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is dangerous to our country. Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgment. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country,” read the Instagram post signed by Rory Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy II and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a group that totals four of the 11 children shared by Ethel and Robert Kennedy.

Director Alex Gibney.s documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief made some serious waves when it was released last march. The movie provided chilling insight surrounding the inner workings of the high profile religion. Scientology itself has widely disputed the claims made by the film, and now has reportedly begun production its own documentary about Going Clear .s director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rory Kennedy . an Oscar winner and colleague of Gibney.s . alleges that a man recently approached her about the possibility of an interview regarding Gibney and his Emmy wins for Going Clear. She also claims that her husband, Mark Bailey, was approached separately by the same individual. The man reportedly identified himself as Joe Taglieri, and while he did not explicitly state to either Kennedy or Bailey that he represented Scientology, it later came out that he writes for Freedom . a Scientologist publication.

Marvel's Kevin Feige hints that the studio will soon be hiring a woman to direct one of its feature films - and it may be Ava DuVernay.
We've had word of one new director joining the Marvel cinematic universe this week, as it's been revealed that Jon Watts is the man to direct the next standalone Spider-Man film. But could Selma director Ava DuVernay be next?
She was linked earlier this year with directing Marvel's planned Black Panther movie, that's set to star Chadwick Boseman. And now, Kevin Feige has confirmed that he has indeed met the director with regards the project.
That's a long way from her being offered the job of course, and talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Feige said that "we’ve met with a number of people for a number of movies. She has been one of them… We need to find the best director for any given movie,...

Sometimes, stories based in fact make for the most compelling movies. Sure, the ending is almost certainly not going to be a surprise, and the potential for plot twists is greatly diminished, but the true nature of the tale brings with it an inherent emotional investment from the audience that is really hard to beat. Put that type of project in the hands of an Academy Award winning filmmaker, and you have the chance of something very special indeed. These are the stakes for The Last Of The Tribe, now that Paul Haggis is circling the director’s chair.
Based on the book The Last Of The Tribe: The Epic Quest To Save A Lone Man In The Amazon – by the South American correspondent for the Washington Post, Monte Reel – the script for The Last Of The Tribe is written by Mark Bailey and the film is an independent project from Chockstone and Hypnotic.

Writer, director and producer Paul Haggis currently has at least half a dozen projects percolating in some form or other, but there's apparently room for one more. He's now in talks to direct Last Of The Tribe, a jungle drama based on the book by Monte Reel.Washington Post reporter Reel's source is a non-fiction account of the events surrounding attempts to commercially exploit the Brazilian Amazon. The law states that if even one indigent is still living in any given piece of land, it must be preserved. One such was found in 1996, and investigations turned up the sinister revelation that the entire rest of his tribe had probably been murdered by corporate interests, and that his own life was obviously in danger for the same reasons.Mark Bailey, co-writer of the documentary Last Days In Vietnam, penned the adaptation, and the film is being set up as an indie,...

At last Saturday’s lively and informative annual Women’s Panel – expertly moderated by Madelyn Hammond – at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival , filmmaker Rory Kennedy had the capacity crowd roaring when she offered her brother Christopher’s two part definition of the kind of movies she makes: “Depressing . And more depressing”. That is not entirely the case for this veteran of more than 25 docs including her landmark HBO portrait of her mother, Ethel Kennedy in Ethel. But nothing she had done before could prepare us for the power and sheer brilliance of her latest, the Oscar-nominated feature Documentary , Last Days In Vietnam, which chronicles the final waning moments when we had to abandon Vietnam for good, heartbreakingly leaving behind hundreds of South Vietnamese refugees trying to get out, but abandoned at the last minute. The film was made under the ausopices of PBS’ American Experience and though it faces tough,...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced their nominees for their yearly awards and I'm very happy to report that Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" received a nod! Woot woot!
It was one of my favorite movies of 2014 (see my Top 10 here) and I'm glad that its zippy, entertaining, but highly heartfelt script is nominated.
I'm also elated that Dan Gilroy's "Nightcrawler" received a nod! That character-driven piece is all about writing (those soliloquies!) that gave Jake Gyllenhaal a great background to play with and director Gilroy (who also wrote the script) a fantastic material to helm!
Winners of the 2015 Writers Guild Awards will be revealed on Feb. 14th! I wonder who will receive a great Valentine from the WGA? Stay tuned...

People often ask me why I don’t include the Writers Guild of America in the “top guilds” when it comes to discussing awards, but the answer is very simple, with this morning’s nominations being a prime example. Every year, because of their silly and narrow-minded rules, they leave out several contenders for their screenplay awards, and this year is no exception.
Among the nominees, you’ll find most of what was expected, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, Boyhood, and Gone Girl. However, because certain films didn’t follow the WGA’s rules, you won’t find The Theory of Everything, Selma, or, most importantly, Birdman. The only reason I was looking forward to these awards this year was because they would help settle the matter of which original screenplay has the lead going into the Oscars, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel being practically neck and neck...

The WGA has announced nominations for outstanding achievement in writing for the screen during 2014 in three categories: original, adapted and documentary screenplays. Among the notables unveiled this morning: Damien Chazelle’s script for Whiplash nominated in the Original Screenplay category, the day after the Oscar Academy was criticized for slotting it in its Adapted Screenplay race. Today’s WGA nom will keep that story alive.
Winners will be honored February 14 at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) nominations announcement is always an interesting bend in the Oscar road if only because of the various awards season players that find themselves ineligible. "Selma," "Mr. Turner" and "The Theory of Everything" were among the non-signatory DQs this year, as was "Birdman" — a fact I cop to completely missing somehow when I first wrote about the scripts that would not be competing this year. (*facepalm*) Those gaps are a beautiful thing for fringe players looking for a foothold, however. Another intriguing twist (boy did the writers keep it exciting this year) is the revelation that the Academy has ruled Damien Chazelle's "Whiplash" an adapted screenplay, where the WGA considers it original. So it's nomination in that category with the guild will obviously leave a hole in the Academy's original race. With the day's guild mentions complete, we're left with "The Grand Budapest Hotel...

“The Imitation Game,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Gone Girl” and “Boyhood” are among the nominees for the Writers Guild of America’s best screenplays of 2014, the WGA announced on Wednesday.
The nominees did not include Ava DuVernay’s “Selma,” which was notably left out of Monday’s Producers Guild nominations – but this time the omission was expected, because the film was not eligible under WGA rules that limit its awards to scripts written by members or produced under the Guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in writing for the screen during 2014 and there aren't too many surprises, though I must admit and (even though I didn't like the film) slightly admire the decision to nominate Guardians of the Galaxy for Best Adapted Screenplay. Of course, we also have the expected continuation of the Whiplash controversy (read about that here) as it's nominated as an Original Screenplay here, but the Academy has decided it will compete in the Adapted Screenplay category at the Oscars. On top of all that, we must also remember certain screenplays weren't eligible for consideration due to WGA rules, those include Birdman, The Theory of Everything, Selma and Mr. Turner. So, if you're wondering how some scripts got in over others that should help a little in the sorting process. Just below is the complete list of nominees, winners will...

“Of All the Gin Joints: Stumbling through Hollywood History” by Mark Bailey with illustrations by Edward Hemingway takes readers on an alcohol-fueled ride with some of the biggest names in show business. Here are excerpts for TheWrap: Humphrey Bogart It wasn't a joke, but it damn well should have been. Certainly it began like one: So Humphrey Bogart walks into a bar with two stuffed pandas. Bogart was, by then — September 1949 — the biggest movie star in the world, and he was out in New York with an old drinking buddy named Bill Seeman. They'd been carousing since early,...

Chicago – It has been nearly 40 years since the Vietnam War truly ended, with the desperate events during the Fall of Saigon. “Last Days in Vietnam” is a brilliant new documentary that puts it all in perspective, the final surreal folly of America’s nightmarish involvement in the Vietnam War. Director Rory Kennedy – the youngest daughter of Robert F. Kennedy – generates a precise and gripping document that lingers long after it has been experienced.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Veteran filmmaker Rory Kennedy knows her way around a story, and takes the talking heads – including the ancient ex-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger – and combines their insights with the copious amount of archival footage regarding the event (the TV network news divisions at the time were at their peak in actually covering stories on the ground). Over a period of two months, in March and April of 1975, the whole of the Vietnam War participation for the United States came crashing down,...

"In terms of 'Black Panther,' it's absolutely in development."
That's Kevin Feige, Marvel's president of production responding to Black Tree TV when asked point-blank about the status of Black Panther on film. T'Challa, the monarch, scientist, martial artists, and tactician has had a winding road coming to the big screen for years now, with several false starts and elliptical starts as Marvel and the various rights holders who've had their hands on the character over the years have attempted to launch only the second black superhero franchise on film after "Blade."
For those unfamiliar with the character, the Black Panther was introduced in "The Fantastic Four" all the way back in 1966's #52 as one of the earliest black superheroes in comics. He was an interesting counterpoint to other representations of blacks in comics, imminently noble, in charge, and dangerous, from a fictional African nation of...

Bleeding Cool has come across an interesting tweet from actor Morris Chestnut. It seems that the actor is either filling in some holes in his comic book knowledge or, because wild speculation is so much fun, he's preparing for a role.

"Black Panther" has been in talks for years now, with actors like Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Djimon Hounsou stating how much they'd like to don the iconic black costume and claws. Anthony Mackie even showed interest in the role before landing the part of the Falcon in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." This isn't even taking into consideration Wesley Snipes' epic struggle to get Marvel's most prominent male hero of color on the big screen. Snipes' attempts lasted from 1992 to at least 2006, and are too extensive to be recounted here.

Ethel a documentary by Rory Kennedy
Ethel is a feature length documentary about the remarkable life of Ethel Kennedy, told from the point of view those who know Ethel best: her family. Produced and directed by Rory Kennedy, the film features candid interviews with Ethel and seven of her children. The film is a personal portrait of Ethel’s political awakening, the life she shared with Robert F. Kennedy, and the years following his death when she raised their eleven children on her own. Ethel offers a personal look inside the political dynasty that helped shape America.
Beautifully directed by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, this is her best work to date. Powerful, moving and deeply personal it was short listed for the Documentary Oscar. Produced by Jack Youngelston, smartly written by Mark Bailey, stunningly shot by Buddy Squires, elegantly scored by Miriam Cutler and edited by Azin Samari, this is that rare work that is perfectly crafted and feels like the director did not have to compromise one frame. Compressing an extraordinary life into this one and half ‐ hour work, the film both shares the life of Ethel Kennedy and covers the career of Robert Kennedy who was fatally shot in 1968 leaving Ethel alone to manage her family of eleven children. Never seeming to tire she shows continued strength, intelligence, sensitivity and love for her family and the Kennedys. This work is a tribute to an amazing mom.
The film aired on HBO in 2012.

Salar a short film by Nicholas Greene
In an isolated Bolivian village, on the edge of the vast Uyuni salt flats, two lives collide: Marc, a jaded American doctor looking to leave, and Carlos, a fiery Bolivian salt miner who's just been stabbed in the hand.
In this stunning fiction short student filmmaker Nicholas Greene has made a film worthy of an Oscar nomination. This 19 minute film has great production values, strong acting, an amazing cast and, with the Red camera, a clarity of image that gives a great look. Solidly produced by fellow Columbia University classmate Julie Buck and shot by Hilary Spera this work like many of the thesis films coming from Columbia shows how a solid original story can become a solid film. Short listed for an Academy Award, this thesis film is outstanding.
Director/ Writer’s Bio:
Nicholas Greene is a British writer/director. In 2010 he made the short film Salar in Bolivia, working with La Fabrica Escuela, the country's only film school. The film won the international competition at the Clermont‐Ferrand Film Festival. He holds an Mfa in Film at Columbia University. He works as an editor for non‐profit documentaries in New York.
Producer Bio:
Julie Buck is a New York‐based producer and currently works for Rabbit Bandini, James Franco’s production company, where her co‐producer credits include Child of God and Black Dog Red Dog. She has an Mfa from Brigham Young University, a certificate in film preservation from George Eastman House, and an Mfa from Columbia University.

The Film Mfa Programs
Columbia University’s film program has distinguished itself over the last decade by its students winning more Student Academy Awards in fiction than any other training program in the Us. Its entries are consistently well written, beautifully produced and strongly directed.
There are two Mfa programs in filmmaking, Screenwriting/Directing and Creative Producing, which share a common first year. The course of instruction combines producing, directing, and writing with technical training and even some history and theory to provide students with a deep understanding of all the principles and practice of dramatic filmmaking. All the courses within this unique, integrated curriculum focus on film as a medium for the telling of stories. The graduate programs average 25 students in each class. While Columbia does not “own” the student works they are produced under Columbia’s egis. Since the program is not training camera, sound, editors and other craft areas student films are crewed by friends, colleagues and others interested in working on them rather than the projects being required to use other Columbia University students.
The faculty combines veteran and new members of the New York and Hollywood film communities in both production and writing.

Kennedy was U.S. attorney general, his wife, Ethel, would take their children to the FBI building to watch sharpshooters at target practice. It was fun for the kids, though they risked running into FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, who disliked Robert Kennedy and didn’t care for children. So when Ethel came across a suggestion box, she wrote, “Get a new director,” on a piece of paper, and slipped it in the slot.

Raw Leiba, who had a minor role in last year’s Conan the Barbarian remake and a small part on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has suddenly become attached to two slow-developing but high-profile projects. The Geek Files has heard rumors that the actor and stuntman will appear in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Highlander remake and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther.
The Highlander project has Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, but other casting appears to have gone quiet since. Vinnie Jones and Ray Stevenson have been rumored to be in the mix for the character Kurgan (played by Clancy Brown in the 1986 original), so Geek Files speculates Leiba could play Sean Connery’s role, the immortal Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, but given Leiba’s low profile and stunt background, he seems more suited for a smaller part. The actor’s reps have not commented on his casting either way.

Prior to all the hype surrounding the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Marvel's second outing in 2014 was heavily rumored to finally adapt T'Challa, The Black Panther to the big-screen. While that's no longer happening, more discouraging news came when Marvel's co-president suggested that the potential film would be “a little more difficult,” due to the character's homeland being Wakanda, a fictional resource-rich nation in Africa. Despite all the discouraging news, there have been favorable hints towards the Wakandian king's existence within the Marvel cinematic universe, in previous films. Plus, notorious documentary screenwriter Mark Bailey was hired to pen the film's story in early January last year. Therefore, after The Avengers sequel possibly wraps up “Phase 2” in 2015, that's likely when we'll see The Black Panther grace the silver-screen. And when the film does eventually get the green-light, another relatively renowned actor to consider for the leading role has emerged.

Christopher Lambert headlined the 1986 film, with Sean Connery playing his mentor Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez and Clancy Brown as his evil nemesis the Kurgan. Four further films followed, along with two TV series, plus cartoons, books and comics.

Anthony Mackie recently told HitFix that given the chance, he would take a swipe at playing T’Challa in Black Panther, Marvel’s upcoming superhero film that is set for release in 2014.
In a joint interview with Benjamin Walker to promote Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Mackie was asked if he has been contacted by Marvel about the comic book adaptation. Although he admits that he hasn’t, he states that it is one of his dreams to play an action hero and expresses interest in the role. Co-star Benjamin Walker voices support, and says he “would watch the hell out of that.”
My sentiments exactly, Mr. Walker. With the explosion of iconic Marvel characters on the big screen, a film depicting the first black superhero is well deserved. So far, the Black Panther has been seen in numerous animated shows, including the currently running series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightest Heroes.

We’re all waiting impatiently to see what new superhero movie Marvel Studios is going to release post-Avengers. Sure, we already know that Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain America 2 are on their way, and characters like Ant-Man, Iron Fist, Black Panther and Doctor Strange have either been confirmed or rumored to be in the studios’ pipeline, but which hero will make it to the big-screen first?
Back in January, when we brought you the news when Marvel Studios hired screenwriter Mark Bailey to pen the big-screen adaptation of the comic book series Black Panther, we thought that would be the last we heard on the project for quite awhile. Now, the folks over at Latino-Review are reporting that several trusted sources of theirs have confirmed that Black Panther will be the film that occupies the previously Untitled Marvel Movie #1 slot, slated for a May 16th, 2014 release date.

While they're happy to talk up their upcoming sequels to the likes of "Thor," "Iron Man" and "Captain America", Marvel has been keeping fairly quiet about which of the characters that haven't been adapted for the screen yet will be the ones to fill the two "open slots" in their schedule.
Will it be already announced projects in development like "Doctor Strange," "Ant-Man," or "Guardians of the Galaxy"? Well Latino Review posted a report yesterday that indicates it just might be something else entirely - Black Panther.
In the comics, 'Black Panther' is the name given to royal leader of the fictional African nation Wakanda - in this case a wealthy prince, brilliant scientist and highly skilled warrior named T’Challa.
His nemesis is the physicist Ulysses Klaw who murdered his father to gain access to the precious deposits of vibranium, the rare and precious metal that makes up Captain America’s shield.

In the comics, 'Black Panther' is the name given to royal leader of the fictional African nation Wakanda - in this case a wealthy prince, brilliant scientist and highly skilled warrior named T’Challa.

The Marvel movie rumor mill is cranking out more intriguing "news." On the heels of the rumor that the X-Men: First Class sequel will be based on the "Days of Future Past" storyline, comes the rumor that another comic book Avenger is going to get his own movie: Black Panther.
The source of the rumor is Latino Review, which claims that four different sources have revealed that T'Challa, aka the Black Panther, will be the next character to get his own movie. Marvel already has a 2014 release date scheduled but hasn't yet announced what project will fill that date. (Captain America 2 is scheduled for April 4, 2014.) Documentarian Mark Bailey was hired to write the movie's screenplay early last year and the report claims that the script is "awesome."

Update: EW’s inside sources at Marvel say the report is entirely untrue, although studio reps decline to comment on the rumor.
The Wakanda tourism board should prepare to put in some overtime. They could soon become much more popular.
A report from the movie website Latino Review by writer El Mayimbe says Marvel Studios has committed to making one of its next projects a movie based on Black Panther, the leader of the fictional African nation and the character widely regarded as the first major black superhero.

With Marvel riding high on the success of those assembled Avengers, and plans for sequels to their current crop of on-screen heroes well under way, it’s only natural for the company to press ahead with the next stage in their character evolution. And if Latino Review scoop hound El Mayimbe’s sources are correct, it looks like one of those stages will be to finally get Black Panther prowling through cinemas. There has been no official word from either Marvel Studios or their Disney distribution partners to either confirm or shoot down the chatter, but it would certainly not come as a big surprise since there was movement on the idea as recently as January 2011.Documentarian Mark Bailey was hired to take the latest crack at T’Challa, the African prince who becomes a hero as part of his royal family’s legacy. That would building on clues and...

While Marvel is planning to release a pair of movies in 2014 (one of them being Captain America 2 on April 4, 2014), fans have been debating what the other film could be. Ant-Man? Dr. Strange? In an exclusive scoop, Latino Review says that mystery second movie is none other than The Black Panther. According to the site, Marvel is going after the urban film audience and apparently there is a script already written by Mark Bailey. The site goes on to point out other clues that led to the selection of The Black Panther. Now the only question is if this solo film will occupy the May 16, 2014 release date. There has been no official word from Disney/Marvel. [Latino Review] Jon Favreau has emerged as the leading candidate to direct an adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Jersey Boys. The...

Update: It looks like Marvel Films might finally be en route to Wakanda.
Well, the Black Panther didn't have a cameo appearance in "The Avengers" like we speculated over a year and a half ago, but he might now be getting his own stand-alone Marvel movie, according to Latino Review.
There has been much speculation as to what Marvel hero would be getting his or her own feature film now that the long-awaited big team-up is up and running (and breaking every box office record imaginable), and all signs are pointing toward T'Challa. Wakanda, the fictional African nation from which he hails, was featured on a map in "Iron Man 2," and Captain America’s shield is made from vibranium, which hails from Wakanda.
There's no hard evidence just yet, so stay tuned for confirmation on whether the Panther will indeed be clawing his way to the big screen — at long,...

Joss Whedon’s The Avengers capped off the supposed first phase of Marvel’s cinematic superhero domination in spectacular fashion. It currently sits as the third highest-grossing film of all time (not accounting for inflation), but more importantly, it’s a damn entertaining film. Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige recently laid out parts of phase two, which included sequels to Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, but he also left two titles unannounced. Confirmation on those mystery titles will most likely come during this summer’s Comic-Con, but that hasn’t stopped the speculation. The Avengers 2 seems obvious. Ant-Man is high on fans’ wish lists. The Vision is absent on most polls. But now it looks like we know the identity of at least one of them, thanks to Latino Review. They broke this scoop earlier today which, judging by their past history, pretty much makes it official. One of the previously unannounced Marvel films is...
