Will “The Gilded Age” find Emmys gold?
After its sophomore season, HBO’s historical drama “The Gilded Age” has entered the Emmy race with up to 37 nominations, Variety can exclusively reveal. This includes outstanding drama series, 15 main cast members and the season finale “In Terms of Winning and Losing,” which will represent director Michael Engler and scribe Julian Fellowes in their submissions.
The central couple, Bertha and George Russell, played by Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, are contenders in the lead acting categories. Coon, an Emmy nominee for the third season of the anthology crime series “Fargo” in 2017, has a solid chance of picking up her second nom, competing against contenders Anna Sawai, Jennifer Aniston and Emma Stone. Already proving to be a big year for the actress, she could find herself in the Oscar race later this year for her remarkable performance in Azazel Jacobs’ family drama “His Three Daughters,...

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) argued that President Joe Biden should have pardoned former President Donald Trump on the numerous federal charges against him.
During an interview with MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle, Romney discussed his opinions toward the indictments against Trump.
“I don’t want to get into the details of this criminal trial happening in New York, but there is one, and Donald Trump is the criminal defendant,” Ruhle stated, referring to the former president’s New York hush money trial. “Fifty year years ago, leaders in the Republican Party walked into the White House and told a criminal [President Nixon] needed to step down. This week, leaders in the Republican party went up to that trial, stood outside the courthouse and attacked our legal system. How does that make you feel about Republicans right now?”

Oliver Stone has always had one eye pointed south of the U.S. border.
It began with his phenomenal script for Brian De Palma’s Scarface, which transformed the famous Chicago gangster into a hardened Cuban refugee. After that, Stone directed the photojournalist saga Salvador, about the deadly civil war that gripped El Salvador in the 1980s. And later on he made a handful of documentaries about Latin American leaders, two of them featuring Fidel Castro and another one including such leftist figureheads as Hugo Chávez and Evo Morales.
Stone’s fascination with the dirty politics and violent class struggles of the southern hemisphere seems to perfectly align with the dramatic twists and nonstop conspiracies present in much of his other fictional work, from J.F.K. to Nixon to W to Snowden. In the director’s world, which he argues is ours as well, leaders are either corruptible or taken down by the corrupt,...

Ali Abbasi’s film presents young Donald as an amoral narcissist, wastes the talent of Jeremy Strong and includes a grisly rape scene that is quickly glossed over
News: new film about Donald Trump depicts him as a rapist
Donald Trump will not be the smallest bit worried by this genially ironic, lenient TV movie-style treatment of his early adventures in 70s landlordism, property and tabloid celebrity – and his own apprentice relationship with dark legal sorcerer and Nixon intimate Roy Cohn, the bully whose connections added to Donald’s wealth and who taught him to lie to others and himself and never admit defeat. There had been many rumours here in Cannes before this film screened about its rape scene, of which, more in a moment.

To clear any confusion up front, The Apprentice has nothing to do with the NBC reality competition of that name, in which Donald Trump sifted through a field of aspiring businesspeople to identify the most promising of them, sending an eliminated contestant home each week with the brutal dismissal, “You’re fired!” On the other hand, you could say that Ali Abbasi’s biographical drama has everything to do with the television series.
It’s a reverse reflection of the mentorship process, in which the host becomes the hungry young upstart, laying the foundations for a business empire built in part out of smoke and mirrors, and operating under the guidance of a master manipulator.
Written by political journalist and Roger Ailes biographer Gabriel Sherman, the movie is first and foremost the story of a Faustian pact, in which the eager apprentice is schooled to ditch conventional notions of morality,...

Cynthia Nixon Responds To Satc Spinoff Criticism. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Cynthia Nixon is unperturbed by the criticism surrounding the “Sex and the City” spinoff, “And Just Like That.” During the 90th Annual Drama League Awards on Friday, May 17, the 58-year-old actress shared why she is not dismayed by the hate hurled toward the spinoff.
Cynthia Nixon portrayed Miranda Hobbes in “Sex and The City” for all six seasons before reprising her role for the spinoff “And Just Like That” in 2021. While Sex and The City left an indelible mark in pop culture history, its successor “And Just Like That” has failed to ingratiate itself with the audience, who often highlight the show’s shortcomings compared to its predecessor.
However, Cynthia Nixon told page six that she’s unperturbed by the hate, noting that viewers were just as harsh on the Og series when it premiered in 1998. She said, “I feel...

If you were to learn that Disney+, from the company that owns the work created by the late Jim Henson, was broadcasting a documentary about the visionary puppeteer and filmmaker and that doc was being directed by Ron Howard with substantial input from Henson’s family, you could probably guess what the movie would be like.
And you’d be right.
In this case, though, there’s nothing wrong with a little predictability. Henson and Howard are a fine match, and the sort of film you’d expect Ron Howard to make – straightforward, skillful, honest and sympathetic – is pretty much the kind of movie you’d want about Jim Henson.
There are surprises in “Jim Henson Idea Man,” which had its world premiere on Saturday night in the Cannes Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival. But there’s nothing shocking, nothing earthshaking about this portrait of the man who gave us Big Bird,...

The best festivals point to the future, capture the zeitgeist, or honor the past. At Locarno in 2015, you could have had all three: Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Happy Hour (his first time premiering in a major competition), Chantal Akerman’s No Home Movie (the director in attendance just months before she died), and Hong Sangsoo’s Right Now, Wrong Then (a mid-career masterpiece), all played. So did Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, the final film of Andrzej Żuławski, and the directorial debut of Josh Mond, at the time best known for producing Martha Marcy May Marlene for Borderline, a company he established with Sean Durkin and Antonio Campos in 2003. Mond’s debut James White featured Cristopher Abbott’s first lead role and (one year before dazzling in A Quiet Passion for Terrence Davies) a Cynthia Nixon performance that made you sit up and take note. It won a prize in Locarno and another at Sundance.

Oil and water. Oscar and Felix. Entering tonight’s Real Time, you’d expect Sen. Ted Cruz and Bill Maher to fit into that “don’t mix” category.
You’d be wrong, for the most part. Although they sparred at times, the two political opposites found that they were often on the same page.
Cruz is out supporting his new book, Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America, and surprisingly admitted his admiration for the “old-school liberal” Maher, who Cruz said was “funny as hell” and “believes in free speech.”
“I actually appreciate what you do,” Cruz said, adding he has retweeted some of Maher’s monologues.
Maher seemed taken aback. “I feel really bad about the jokes I did about you,” he said. He acknowledged he is often accused of slowly getting more conservative, basically because he refuses to “bend the knee” to the more “crazy train” ideas of the left.

In 1970, Elvis Presley traveled to Washington, D.C., with one goal in mind: to get a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. He was a collector of various law enforcement badges and believed that this would be the pinnacle of his collection. He also thought it would afford him new authority. When he learned that his request had been denied, he almost broke down in tears.
Elvis desperately wanted a badge from the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs
When Elvis arrived in D.C., he delivered a note at the White House requesting to meet with President Richard Nixon. Soon after, he went to a meeting with the Deputy Narcotics Director John Finlator. Here, he requested a badge from the bureau.

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

In the 1970s, John Lennon was in New York, living in a constant state of concern that the U.S. government had it out for him. He had a right to be concerned. The Nixon administration wanted to deport the Beatle, and he endured a lengthy legal battle to stay in the country. By 1972, Lennon realized just how serious the situation was. He noted that people were following him and believed people were listening in on his phone conversations.
John Lennon grew concerned that he was under surveillance by the U.S. government
Lennon and Yoko Ono became heavily involved in the anti-war movement. They staged demonstrations for peace and spoke out against the Vietnam War. Given his considerable influence, the Nixon administration grew concerned about his power to influence the youth. They wanted to deport him.

"Futurama" is a show that has had several different lives throughout its existence, which now extends for close to 25 years. One thing the beloved animated series has never had though? A spin-off. But it wasn't for a lack of discussing such a thing, and it turns out a spin-off series came close to happening at one point. While it never came to pass, fan-favorite characters Zapp Brannigan and his trusty pal Kif were talked about as possible subjects for just such a thing.
Speaking with Chris Hardwick on the "Futurama" series final post-show, voice actor Maurice Lamarche, who voices Kif, as well as executive producer David X. Cohen discussed this spin-off series that never came to be. When asked hypothetically by Hardwick which characters they would like to see get a spin-off, Lamarche responded with, "Didn't we come close to a Zapp and Kif spin-off in real life?" Cohen then...

“The Gilded Age” is losing a bit of its high society luster, thanks to a certain 19th century social climber.
Carrie Coon reprises her role of “new money” power player Bertha Russell, who along with her husband George (Morgan Spector), starts a social war in the teaser for Season 2.
The official synopsis reads: The American Gilded Age was a period of immense economic change, of great conflict between the old ways and brand new systems, and of huge fortunes made and lost. Season 2 begins on Easter morning 1883, with the news that Bertha Russell’s bid for a box at the Academy of Music has been rejected. Through the eight episodes of the season, Bertha challenges Mrs. Astor and the old system and works to not only gain a foothold in society, but to potentially take a leading role in it.

Los Angeles, July 30 (Ians) Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor, who was known for her powerful, evocative voice and her activism, passed away despairing about “biblical Devil” Donald Trump and the US.
The ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ singer and outspoken human rights activist said witnessing the reality TV star voted in as US president as well as racist outrages such as the police killing of George Floyd made her want to see a public uprising against corrupt leaders.
She ranted in Ireland’s Hot Press magazine in 2020 in what is thought to be one of her last long interviews about how she was convinced Trump was the real incarnation of Satan, “I actually do believe Donald Trump is the biblical Devil, the f*****, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I know this may sound extreme – I don’t really give a flying f*** what everyone else thinks – but I am convinced the man is actually a Satanist.

Ron DeSantis once again floated a potential pardon for his 2024 rival Donald Trump should the Florida governor win the presidency. During a Tuesday interview with right-wing podcaster Clay Travis, DeSantis justified the idea by citing President Gerald Ford’s pardoning of his predecessor Richard Nixon following the Watergate scandal as a way to “move the country beyond” Nixon’s actions.

What’s Wrong With Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Voice? Rare Condition May Affect His Presidential Campaign
In April, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced his bid for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2024 presidential election. As the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, Rfk Jr. has gained a significant following, especially as a candidate challenging a current president within the same political party. According to a CNN poll conducted in May, 20% of Democrats support Kennedy over President Joe Biden.
His popularity has reignited interest in his voice disorder, spasmodic dysphonia.
In 2007, Kennedy told O, The Oprah Magazine that his disorder didn’t begin to manifest until he was about 43.
According to the National Institutes of Health (Nih), spasmodic dysphonia is a disorder affecting the voice box where the muscles inside the vocal folds spasm, interfering with typical vibrations. This causes voice breaks during speech and can make the voice sound strained or breathy.

Cynthia Nixon is worried about what “Sex and the City” fans will think when Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones finally makes an appearance in “And Just Like That…” season 2.
Nixon — who plays Miranda Hobbes in the much-loved show — told Sunday Times Style that Cattrall won’t be in the show a lot.
She shared, “I worry that with all the build-up people are going to wonder what all the fuss was about. It’s important to know that it is a very brief, very small cameo,” Page Six reported.
Nixon went on, “We were very disappointed that the secret leaked of Kim’s upcoming appearance.
“We so hoped it was something people wouldn’t know about until they saw the episode and that it would be a fun surprise as they were watching.”

News media figures from the left and right clashed this week when Megyn Kelly took MSNBC’s Jen Psaki to task, saying that the former Biden press secretary’s Sunday program is “failing” because of “drivel” like she saw on this week’s episode.
The segment in question? Psaki had a standalone report Sunday on “the reemergence of a very old GOP playbook” of pitting different groups of Americans against each another for the party’s political gain. The latest example, Psaki said, was what she saw as the right’s pitting of Muslim Americans against trans people.
“It gets covered by MSNBC as ‘the white man is evil and manipulative,'” Kelly said in response on Monday.
In her “Inside” report, Psaki broke down over a five-minute segment the GOP’s history, dating back to President Richard Nixon, of “pitting one group of Americans against another,” which under Nixon...

Bradley Cooper is a superstar now, but in the late 1990s, he was a fledgling actor hoping to get his big break. Cooper thought his big break had come when he landed a small part on Sex and the City. There was one big problem for Cooper, though. The role required him to drive a manual transmission car. He enthusiastically insisted he could drive a manual to secure the part. He then immediately went to a driving school to learn how to drive stick since he didn’t actually know how. While he did reasonably well during his lessons, Cooper learned the difference between a Volkswagen and a vintage Porsche on the streets of New York City while filming his infamous scene.

There was one sex scene that was a bit too gross to make it on to “Sex and the City”.
Cynthia Nixon chatted to Andy Cohen on Thursday’s “Watch What Happens Live”, telling him how one scene involving her character Miranda Hobbes and a detective was cut.

“They didn’t cut that plot, but they cut the sex scene where she’s really, really drunk and then vomits all over him.”

The Season 2 premiere of “And Just Like That” opens with a montage with the three main characters — Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte (Kristin Davis) and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) — engaged in intimate acts with their respective lovers. And while the latter two appear in states of complete undress, Carrie does not.
Parker has talked openly about her “no nudity” stance in her career which dates back to her breakout role on “And Just Like That” predecessor “Sex and the City.” Davis, Nixon and Kim Cattrall all appeared nude on the show — which ran from the late ’90s to early ’00s on HBO — but Parker never did.

Quentin Tarantino is expanding the Rick Dalton lore in the remembrance of the late (and invented) movie star.
The “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” auteur announced May 19 that Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2019 film, died at the age of 90. Dalton’s 1969 exploits alongside stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) were captured in Tarantino’s “Hollywood,” during which Dalton saves Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) from the Manson family would-be serial killers.
During Tarantino and “Pulp Fiction” co-screenwriter Roger Avary’s recent entry in the “Video Archives Podcast,” Tarantino remembered the late fictional action star.
“Dalton was beloved by fans of ‘Bounty Law,’ where he played bounty hunter Jake Cahill for five seasons and also for his iconic role as Eddie Karpinski, the flamethrower-wielding vigilante in ‘The Fireman,’ ‘The Fireman Part 2,’ and ‘The Fireman 3: CIA Crackdown,'” Tarantino said. “But he was so much more than that, with...

Beyond the 19 films and TV shows that make up official on-screen “Star Trek” canon, there are quite a few more efforts that could, philosophically, be a part of this list.
There’s the rich legacy of officially licensed novels and comic books that brought the characters to life in print form. There’s the technology invented by production designers that eventually became real-life wizardry. There’s the 1999 film “Galaxy Quest” — technically a parody, but spiritually one of the best “Star Trek” movies ever made.

There are personal films, and there are personal films. "James White," a Sundance 2015 alum that opens in theaters this Friday, the film was shaped by writer/director Josh Mond's experiences after losing his mother. Christopher Abbott stars as the title character, and Cynthia Nixon, portrays James' mother Gail. All three join Indiewire Editor in Chief Dana Harris on this week's episode of Indiewire Influencers. Having previously worked on "Martha Marcy May Marlene," which Mond co-produced, Abbott and Mond worked together to craft the James White character. "Me and Josh, we had, and have, a rapport," Abbott said. "I trusted him and he trusted me to do what I do. That, in itself is a blessing." For Nixon, coming from outside that inner circle and playing someone personally known by many of the cast and crew, was a welcoming experience. "I feel like my role on the set was sort of like the.

Now that she's apparently returned from the dead, perhaps Osgood could step aboard the Tardis in series nine - providing she's not a Zygon duplicate.

Since Frank Underwood became president on Netflix’s House of Cards, I’ve had this geek fantasy of him debating Josiah Bartlet, Martin Sheen’s idealistic and professorial president from The West Wing. Bartlet’s Washington, D.C., was the proverbial shining city on a hill, a place where intelligent, well-intentioned people gravitated to do the peoples’ business. Underwood’s capital is the nasty underbelly of a trough coated by man’s craven pursuit of power for power’s sake. It’s practically Kennedy’s Camelot versus Nixononian realpolitik. To paraphrase Anthony Hopkins’ Nixon in Oliver Stone’s 1995 movie, “When look at The West Wing,...

We chat to the great Peter Dinklage about his role in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, meeting Game Of Thrones fans, and much more...
When we caught up with Peter Dinklage for a group interview during last June's visit to the set of X-Men: Days Of Future Past, he was dressed impeccably in a crisply-pressed 70s suit. With large shades, a handsomely curved moustache and voluminous hair parted to one side, he'd fit right into the cast of Anchorman. Instead, Dinklage is playing Bolivar Trask, who comic book readers will know is one of the key players in the Days Of Future Past story.
As the shoot of Bryan Singer's forthcoming X-Men movie rumbled on not far from where we were sitting, Dinklage talked enthusiastically about his role in the story - while keeping specifics of the plot firmly under wraps - meeting...

Bill Pullman is no stranger to the fictional presidency, having played the commander-in-chief in "Independence Day," but his latest role as President Dale Gilchrist on NBC's "1600 Penn" is pretty far removed from the 1996 blockbuster.
The comedy series aims to make the first family more relatable, dealing with problems like unplanned pregnancy, adult kids being forced to move back in with their parents, and the friction between a stepmother and her new children.
Created by star Josh Gad (who plays oldest son Skip Gilchrist), Jon Lovett and Jason Winer, the show also co-stars Jenna Elfman as First Lady Emily; Martha MacIsaac, Amara Miller and Benjamin Stockham as the other Gilchrist kids; and Andre Holland as press secretary Marshall Malloy.
Below, see what Pullman told HuffPost TV about returning to comedy, the complicated dynamics within the Gilchrist family and his top tips for playing the president.

The news must have had every paid up member of the Conservative Party choking on their breakfast cup of tea. In a thousand Home Counties bungalows, men called Jeremy or Brian must have reached for their writing paper and fountain pens to compose a strongly worded letter to the Telegraph. The reason behind their outrage was the actress Meryl Streep. Or to put it more precisely, not Meryl Streep herself. Jeremy and Brian probably quite like Meryl Streep. What they can’t tolerate is the idea of Meryl Streep, American as crippling medical bills, donning a wig, putting on an accent and playing Margaret Thatcher.
The Iron Lady opens in cinemas this week. Opinion on Thatcher as a person might be divided, but opinion on Streep’s portrayal of the woman who invented Mr Whippy icecream and kicked the Argies out of a sodden little pile of rock called the Falklands,...
