Maria Carlota Bruno has been working at VideoFilmes since 1989, holding various positions at the independent production company founded by Walter Salles and João Moreira Salles. In 2011, she became Executive Director, overseeing a wide range of films, including Últimas Conversas, the final documentary by Eduardo Coutinho, Paulina by Santiago Mitre, a Brazil-Argentina co-production, and Jia Zhang-ke, a Man from Fenyang, a documentary by Walter Salles screened at the Berlinale in 2015.
In 2018, she produced and commercially released No Intenso Agora, a documentary by João Moreira Salles that premiered at the Berlinale in 2017. She was also the executive producer of Deslembro, Flavia Castro's debut feature film, which screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival in 2018.
As an international juror, she has served on panels at the Santa Maria da Feira Festival (Portugal), SANFIC (Chile), and the Lima PUCP Film Festival (Peru). She participates annually in the Fénix Awards voting and has worked as a consultant for ANCINE in the Brazil/Argentina competition, assisting in the selection of projects in partnership with INCAA.
In 2019, she produced Marinheiro das Montanhas, by Karim Aïnouz, screened in the Special Session at the Cannes Film Festival, and was an associate producer of the award-winning Canción sin Nombre, directed by Peruvian filmmaker Melina León. She also co-produced the documentary Fico te devendo uma carta sobre o Brasil, by Carol Benjamin, in 2019.
Currently, she is finalizing the documentaries Criaturas da Mente, by Marcelo Gomes, about Brazilian neuroscientist Sidarta Ribeiro, and Minha Terra Estrangeira, by João Moreira Salles, about Indigenous environmental activist Txai Suruí. She is also a co-producer of the fiction feature Cyclone, by Flavia Castro, with a release date to be announced, and an associate producer of Manas, by Mariana Brennand, winner of the main award at the Giornate Degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival in 2024.
Maria Carlota is the producer of Ainda Estou Aqui, directed by Walter Salles, winner of the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2025.
