You can’t outrun your legacy, it seems. Showtime has unveiled the first trailer for its feature film follow-up to Liev Schreiber-fronted drama Ray Donovan.
The network has also dated the movie, launching it on Friday January 14 at 9pm.
This comes almost exactly two years since the season seven finale aired on the premium network, which canceled the show after the final episode.
The film picks up where season seven left off, with Mickey, played by Jon Voight, in the wind and Schreiber’s Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago.

Laying out Showtime’s programming plans for the next year at TCA, the network’s Presidents of Entertainment Gary Levine and Jana Winograde said that the Ray Donovan feature-length movie will debut this coming winter. Levine later clarified that the film will premiere in the first quarter of 2022, which would be exactly two years after the series’ surprise cancellation that led to outcry from fans.
Levine was asked about Showtime’s decision to cancel Ray Donovan after seven seasons and the process that led to its resurrection for a wrap-up movie.
“It’s a very difficult decision sometimes,” Levine said about making the call to end a series. “in the best of cases you can plan for it, and it can be a nice gentle landing; Homeland had a beautiful finale in that regard as did Shameless, and sometimes it can’t be planned and circumstances just make the decision a little more abrupt,...

On Monday, Liev Schreiber posted a photo from the set of his upcoming Ray Donovan film, teasing his reunion with four longtime co-stars.
“I will miss this particular gaggle of actors very very much,” the actor wrote on his official Instagram account. “@raydonovan #comingsoon.”
In the photo, Schreiber is seen huddling up with Kerris Dorsey, Dash Mihok, Pooch Hall and Eddie Marsan. On Ray Donovan, Dorsey played Ray’s daughter, Bridget; Mihok played his younger brother, Bunchy. Hall played Ray’s younger half-brother Daryll, while Marsan played his older brother, Terry.
The acclaimed crime drama created by Ann Biderman aired for seven seasons on Showtime between 2013 and 2019. It centered on Schreiber’s professional “fixer” of the same name, watching as he arranged bribes, payoffs, threats, crime-scene clean-up, and other illegal activities on behalf of his (usually) celebrity clients.
While the series was officially canceled in February of 2020, the follow-up film was announced a year later.

For seven seasons, Liev Schreiber played the titular role of Ray Donovan on Showtime.
It was canceled without much fanfare, let alone a proper goodbye to the show that scored awards and viewers for the network.
Thankfully, something is going to be done about that.
Despite Schreiber's pleas for an eighth season of the fan-favorite Showtime drama, the request fell on deaf ears, going so far as to end the beloved show on a cliffhanger.
Not surprisingly, it resulted in some serious blowback against the network.
At the time of its cancellation, Showtime's co-head of entertainment, Gary Levine, said that he always thought the show would go seven or eight seasons before calling it quits.
The same couldn't be said of its star or its showrunner, David Hollander, who said the news blindsided him.
Fans have long memories, and they've remained vocal about the less-than-stellar treatment of the lasting drama.

Ray Donovan’s time fixing other people’s problems may be coming to a close as Showtime’s Gary Levine admits that the drama is “nearing the end of its run”.
Showtime’s Co-President of Entertainment Levine told Deadline that it is expected to make a decision on the future of the Liev Schreiber-fronted show “in the next few weeks” and hinted that it is set to return for an eighth and final season.

“I think Ray Donovan is nearing the end of its run. We always talked about seven or eight seasons. Nothing has been decided yet but it’s fair to say it is nearing the end,” Levine said.

Ray Donovan season 7 will stay in a New York frame of mind.
Ray Donovan is not the kind of guy you fire. More than a few of his friends have woken up to a dead body next to them, and even more than that count themselves lucky to wake up at all. Showtime knows this as Ray Donovan season 7 got the go-ahead, will according to Deadline.
The series, which stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee Liev Schreiber as Ray Donovan, saw its setting change from Los Angeles to New York state in season 6. Season 7 will remain in New York.
Donovan moved to New York after his life was saved by a Staten Island cop named Mac, played by Domenick Lombardozzi. The former Boston mobster stayed for the pizza, and got friendly with media mogul Sam Winslow (Susan Sarandon), who wants Anita Novak (Lola Glaudini) to be the next mayor.

Showtime’s Ray Donovan returns for its sixth season on Sunday, October 28 at 9 pm Et/Pt, and judging by the trailer released today during the network’s TCA presentation, the Liev Schreiber fixer drama has lost none of its punch – or its Susan Sarandon, who is back as a series regular.
“I wanted it all to stop,” narrates Schreiber’s Ray at the start of the trailer, after moving from L.A. to New York City and just before he takes what looks to be an end-it-all plunge into the East River. Within milliseconds, though, he’s rescued by one of New York’s finest, who Ray then tries to knock silly, try being the operative word.
The Season 6 premiere date was announced today by David Nevins, President and CEO of Showtime Networks Inc. The 12-episode season is currently in production in New York.
