Seasoned actor Tinna Hrafnsdóttir has joined Icelandic counterparts Aníta Briem and Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir, successful female actors who have made with panache the leap to screenwriting, sharing the distinction of a nomination for best screenplay of a Nordic drama series.
Flying Iceland’s flag at this year’s Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize, to be handed out Jan. 30 at Göteborg’s TV Drama Vision, Hrafnsdóttir is competing with her six-part family drama “Descendants,” co-written by Ottó Geir Borg (“The Valhalla Murders”) and Tyrfingur Tyrfingsson (“Wild Game”).
The TV show is her first experience as a long-form scripted director, following her feature film debut “Quake” which screened at multiple festivals and was acquired by Juno Films for North America and the UK.

Aníta Briem creates and stars in “As Long as We Live,” an upcoming miniseries about a new mother – and once promising musician – suffocating in her marriage. But things change when a young man, her new nanny, starts giving the couple little “assignments” to do.
“This boy is like Mary Poppins! He brings this new, sexy element into their home that neither of them can control. He helps them rediscover each other,” explains Briem.
“Beta has an 18-month-old child, she is in the midst of postnatal depression, but at the same time her body is becoming her own once again. I use sexuality as a representation for her awakening. She has this whole world locked away inside of her head and a big part of her journey is to bring it all out.”
She drew on her own life for inspiration, she says.

Writer-director Tinna Hrafnsdóttir’s critically acclaimed Icelandic psychological-mystery drama “Quake” has sold to Juno Films for North America and the U.K. as well as to Njuta Films for Sweden.
British-French production, distribution and sales company Alief is presenting the film at the upcoming Cannes Marché du Film.
Anita Briem stars as Saga, a single mother fighting to keep her young son while trying to piece together her life after losing her memory. Afraid of being considered unable to take care of her child, Saga attempts to hide her state from others as she searches for answers and recovers long repressed memories.
“‘Quake’ is a taut mystery-thriller that masterfully spirals toward a cathartic, emotionally satisfying resolution,” said Elizabeth Sheldon, Juno Films’ president and CEO. “The stunning cinematography reflects a barren cold landscape that in turn reflects the emotionally frigid familial relationships in a film that keeps you guessing — until the very end — what is true.

For his sophomore feature, “Beautiful Beings,” playing in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama, Icelandic helmer-writer Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson returns to the subject of his prize-winning first feature “Heartstone” (2016): fraught adolescent friendships and difficult family lives. In “Beautiful Beings,” a horrendously bullied youth forms a tentative rapport with a trio of tough outsiders. Together, the boys experiment with aggression and violence, but also learn about loyalty and love.
The action is captured with a shooting style that blends naturalism and lyricism, using mostly first-time young actors. To find his characters, Gudmundsson put out an open casting call across the country. “We wanted to get every kid in Iceland that has a dream of being in a film to show up. A lot of kids auditioned and we managed to find our main cast,” he says.
But creating the performances he wanted required work, Gudmundsson admits. “The rehearsal period was long.

"The drone is controlling itself!" Another one of these and it looks so, so awful. The first official trailer has debuted for an indie horror comedy titled The Drone, which is premiering at the Slamdance Film Festival later this month. The horror film is about a newlywed couple that's terrorized by a consumer drone that has become sentient with the consciousness of a deranged serial killer. Rolling you eyes now? Yeah. We've seen a number of killer drone films recently: Hover from SyFy, and the short film Donny the Drone. So this isn't original, nor is it clever or funny or anything like that. The Drone stars John Brotherton, Alex Essoe, Anita Briem, Neil Sandilands, and Simon Rex. I really couldn't care any less about this film. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer for Jordan Rubin's The Drone, direct from YouTube: A cornered serial killer transfers his consciousness into a drone,...

Exclusive: Jordan Rubin will ring in 2019 by returning to the big screen with The Drone, the follow-up to his 2014 cult horror comedy Zombeavers about a weekend lake-cabin outing fantastically undone by undead Castor canadensis. Deadline has the exclusive teaser trailer for The Drone to start your new year off right.
The new pic, which as you will have hoped is directly in Zombeaver‘s loopy flight path, revolves around a drone that has become sentient with the consciousness of a deranged serial killer. It then flies off to terrorize newlyweds Rachel (Alex Essoe) and Chris (John Brotherton), who must fight to stop the insidious device before it destroys them both. Anita Briem, Neil Sandilands, Rex Linn, Simon Rex, Sam Adegoke and Christopher Matthew Cook co-star.

If there’s one actor out there I couldn’t be happier about getting larger roles in the last decade, it’s Michael Shannon. The reality is that he’s always been a great actor. He’s always been adept at playing “the weird guy” but he’s so much more than that and has proved it time and time again. His latest film, Salt and Fire looks like its gonna be a good one. The film stars Shannon, Gael García Bernal, and Anita Briem, and is directed by Werner Herzog. It’s rare that you get a trailer with zero dialogue but this one executes perfectly.

Werner Herzog with Michael Shannon should be enough of a pitch to garner ticket purchases — two talented, wildly strange talents, both of whom have established names for themselves on their own terms, in their own way. So comes the French trailer for Herzog’s latest work of fiction, the thriller Salt and Fire, which sees Shannon pondering the nature of perspective and differing realities over images of heavily-geared gunmen and and lots of sand. While it seems destined to divide people, could we really ask anything else of Herzog?

When nine partygoers find themselves trapped 50 floors above Manhattan with a bomb, they are forced to set aside their differences and learn to cooperate. But resentments run deep, and each character has a motive that could doom the survival of all. With issues of racism, greed, war, politics and infidelity converging in one tiny space, Elevator offers a new perspective on terrorism, and raises questions about who the real criminals are in a world where financial markets can be so easily manipulated by a powerful few. The message is powerful, and the suspense unbearable. How far would you go to survive?...

Director: Kevin Munroe. Writers: Thomas Dean Donnelly Joshua Oppenheimer, and Tiziano Sclavi. Cast: Brandon Routh, Anita Briem and Sam Huntington. Brandon Routh is one of those actors who shot up the ladder of fame thanks to Superman Returns. In Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, he's a sleuth, another comic-book hero, who tries to be slicker than oil. But he is hardly Dick Tracy as far as how this movie goes. Some fun can be found with this product, especially with the effects work, but these monsters do not try to stand out. The movie is just as good as The Spirit, and both are catering to a very select market. The colours used on the hero's costume makes for some simple motifs, but unlike previous films, it is not used to great effect. Instead, it is just a schtick, like how Clark Kent wore his clothes in "Smallville." At the same time,...

Vanessa Hudgens looked dazzling when she arrived on the red carpet of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" premiere on Sunday, January 15. The 23-year-old actress, who played Kailani in the movie, was seen showing off her toned legs at the event, which was held at Village Cinemas Jam Factory in Melbourne, Australia.
Vanessa rocked a gold one-shouldered Zaeem Jamal mini dress, completed her pretty look with a pair of red heels, and wore her hair down. Playfully blowing a kiss to the camera, she was joined by her co-star, Josh Hutcherson. The Sean Anderson depicter opted for a green suit with a gold tie and a pair of sneakers.
When being interviewed by Herald Sun, Vanessa said that she "love Australia so much." She additionally said during on-the-spot chat, "My best friend is actually from here, and I really love the place. It was a great cast, and we had so much fun.

Release Date: Jan. 17, 2012
Price: Blu-ray $44.95
Studio: Warner Home Video
Journey to the Center of the Earth was released in 3D in theaters and on anaglyph 3D (with those lovely red/green glasses) on Blu-ray and DVD back in 2008, but this release is for the better Blu-ray 3D.
Based on the novel by Jules Verne, the 2008 science-fiction movie stars Brendan Fraser (Furry Vengeance) as a scientist who, with his nephew (Josh Hutcherson, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant), traces the last journey of his missing brother. They travel to Iceland and find a guide (Anita Briem, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night), but after getting trapped in a cave, they fall into a hole that leads them to a lost world in — you guessed it — the center of the Earth.
Directed by Eric Brevig (Yogi Bear), the PG-rated action adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth grossed $101.7 million when it was in theaters.

A private investigator who chases cheating spouses, is brought back into the world of the paranormal after abandoning it when he takes on a client whose father was murdered by a creature of the night.
A pleasant, if not particularly distinguished or memorable, diversion. The word that singularly best describes Dylan Dog is “almost”. The proceedings are amusing , but if the pacing had been tighter Dylan Dog would have been much more exciting and fun. Brandon Routh makes for an alright hero, but he is never really given all that much to do. Routh gets to engage in plenty of action, but is never given any action sequences that really showcase him well. He is never given that big emotional scene that makes it so that his character resonates with viewers.

The adventure of the popular supernatural Italian comic hero tries to make a film franchise for a second time. and fails. The result is rather bland and that.s odd considering its more colorful sounding source material which is still being published in Italy. Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh) is a private investigator doing the usual jobs of being a P.I. However, he has a more colorful past since he had been involved in many supernatural relations until a tragedy made him turn his back on the unnatural world. That is until Elizabeth (Anita Briem) shows up and all that changes. His partner Marcus (Sam Huntington) is killed but that can.t keep a good man down as he is...

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is probably one of the most lazy films of 2010. I make fun of terrible low-budget horror and action films all the time, but these films did not have the advantages of Brandon Routh or Taye Diggs in leading roles. Most of these movies went straight to DVD and never expected audiences to shell out $12 for a ticket. Dylan Dog: Dead of Night had the advantages of a known property and fairly big-name leading actors, but the product they turned out would be more at home on the SyFy channel than in movie theaters.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night follows the “one last case” of supernatural investigator Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh). Dylan used to be a mediator between supernatural beings and humans, and if there was a crime where one side crossed the line, he was brought in to clean things up. He retired after his girlfriend was murdered by vampires,...

I think most of us can agree that, judging by the trailers for Dylan Dog and the poor box office turnout, viewing this silly monster murder mystery was probably best saved for DVD. The DVD was released last week and it was time to see if it could be better than I thought. I remained optimistic. I believed that, just maybe, Brandon Routh could be involved in an entertaining film and redeem himself after the unfortunate Superman reboot.
I wondered if this might be an action horror film in major release that rises above what it seems. What it seemed like was a silly noir detective story with a big budget gloss and monsters thrown in for good measure. Low and behold that is exactly what it is. It's not as bad as the universal panning by critics or the huge box office bomb would suggest, but...

I first encountered the legend of Dylan Dog back when I was trying to cover foreign comics while at Comics Scene and then wrote about the film adaptation a while back over at Famous Monster of Filmland. A Pi in the world of things that go bump in the night sounded like a lot of fun. That the Italian comic has been running for decades also spoke to its creative spark and the genius of Tiziano Sclavi. Then I saw that this was going to Brandon Routh’s third film based on a comic book and figured he was 1 for 2 so far (entertaining in Scott Pilgrim, not served well by Superman Return’s lousy script) and might improve his average. He had certainly improved as an actor, as witnessed by Fear Itself and his recurring role on Chuck.

I have never seen a Blu-ray with zero special features before. This bare bones release of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night just goes to show how much faith was lost in the product after its meager showing with audiences ($1.2 million domestic gross) and critics (a 3% Rotten Tomatoes score). They only even bothered attaching one trailer (Season of the Witch) to the Blu-ray, yet we still get one of those digital copy promos -- on a disc that doesn't even come with a digital copy. Explain that one to me. "Well this movie failed, so we didn't even bother. But there's a 95% chance you'll get one the next time you drop $20 on a Blu-ray. Thanks for the purchase!"
Truth be told, the film was never given much of a chance to succeed after it was dumped into less than 1,000 theaters with hardly any marketing. Want to know how far the film flew under the radar?...

No chance this summer would be short on the eye-candy after Jon Favreau's hottie-packed Iron Man 2 last year (Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Leslie Bibb, et al). That model combined with a record 10 comic-based movies has, ahem, fleshed out the summer quite nicely, you could say — too nicely, in fact. That's why we decided to narrow this year's list, and even then we couldn't keep it to a top 10.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is an unfortunate misread in the recent slew of comic book adaptations. For those unfamiliar with the character, this Italian series (hugely successful from the ’80s to present day in its home country) follows the exploits of a private investigator specializing in gruesome cases involving nightmarish monsters.
Altering the setting from eerie, cobble-stoned European villages to the vampire rave clubs of New Orleans, this tale begins with Dylan Dog (Brandon Routh) retired from those jobs involving the abnormal. But after turning down a supernatural murder case from the mysterious Elizabeth (Anita Briem), Dylan’s best friend Marcus (Sam Huntington) is killed. Returning as an unusually verbose zombie, the two pals become determined to solve the puzzle and, in the process, wind up in the middle of an ongoing conflict between a gang of vampires (led by Taye Diggs) and werewolves (including Peter Stormare and WWE wrestler Kurt Angle).

It's gotta suck ass playing Superman. It's the Madden curse of the comic-book superhero world. George Reeves, the original Man of Steel, decided to swallow some prompting the very first unoriginal meme tackiness of making "faster than a speeding bullet" jokes, a tragedy only to be surpassed by the agonizing demise of Christopher Reeve. While Dean Cain hasn't quite suffered physical "slings and arrows," metaphorically, his career has been wallowing in ignominy. Granted, our man Clark's been working steady -- but in the likes of the made for TV Gentle Ben movie and its sequel and the forthcoming Halloween Dog. The latest Ka-Lel (with due respect to Henry Cavill who has yet to don the S) is Brandon Routh, and honestly, I wouldn't know what to do with his career either. After the excreble Superman Returns, Routh's been kind of bobbing aimlessly adrift, popping up in "Chuck" or the occasional...

Missed opportunity. I don’t think a more fitting phrase could be used to sum up the film that is Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. With the exception of reading a small synopsis, I tried to learn as little as possible about this cinematic release before watching it. From what I gathered the source material is an ultra popular comic franchise that deals with a quasi detective (think Kolchak, only more of a keeper of the peace between the undead) specializing in the supernatural, it features zombies, werewolves, vampires, and is set in the city of New Orleans. How could the film makers possibly screw this up? Well they sure found a way, read on to find out how.

The creators of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, the long-delayed big screen version of the popular Italian comic, have attempted to translate its pulpy noir feel to the big screen. So they’ve got that going for them. And that’s about it. Kevin Munroe’s flick is otherwise a chore to sit through, a choppily edited festival of hastily conjoined pop cultural archetypes. With terrible acting, a narrative on autopilot and chaotic blurs passing for action scenes, it’s a direct-to-dvd caliber sojourn through the dregs of comic book adaptation. Brandon Routh, the fallen Superman, plays New Orleans-based ex-supernatural investigator Dylan Dog, who’s drawn back in the game when a werewolf kills the father of beautiful client Elizabeth Ryan (Anita Briem). With his wisecracking zombie sidekick (Sam Huntington), Dog traverses the Crescent City’s criminal underworld in an attempt to unwrap the conspiracy behind the murder. A dark place populated by werewolves, zombies...

Woof. Where to begin with this one? Well, at the risk of my review becoming a complete movie-bash session let me begin by saying that I am very impressed that Dylan Dog: Dead of Night managed to earn a theatrical release.
