The initial exuberance and relief following Bob Iger’s return as Disney CEO has been replaced by anxiety as speculation about a pending corporate restructuring is intensifying — and with it, rumors about the layoffs that are likely to follow.
Rumblings of a new org-chart unveiling are growing louder amid mounting pressure on the company (including from activist investor Nelson Peltz) to stage a rebound with Iger back at the controls. Details on the restructuring moves, which could potentially include some sort of consolidation within the company’s marketing operations as well as at Disney Television Studios, are likely to emerge soon and could coincide with the company’s next quarterly earnings report February 8, sources tell Deadline.
And then there is the future of the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution executive ranks.

In Dana Walden’s first personnel move since being upped to Chairman of Disney General Entertainment three months ago, she has promoted three executives: Eric Schrier, who is taking on a new, larger role, as well as Craig Erwich and Shannon Ryan, who are expanding their current responsibilities.

Erwich has been promoted to president, ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals. Ryan has been upped to President, Marketing, Disney General Entertainment.

Family Guy‘s entire catalog of past seasons soon will be available only on Disney-owned networks and platforms. Beginning on Sept. 20, comedy-focused Fxx and corporate sibling Freeform will become the exclusive cable homes to the series’ reruns from Seasons 1-19. Hulu continues to be the exclusive Family Guy streaming platform.
In a competitive situation, FX Networks in 2019 landed off-network rights to Family Guy, starting with its 16th (2017-18) season, also shared with Freeform. At the time, the older seasons of Seth Macfarlane’s animated hit remained on Adult Swim/TBS. The show now will permanently leave its longtime cable home on the Turner networks.
Additionally, as part of the ongoing efforts to bring the libraries of all signature Disney-produced series under the Disney umbrella, Fxx has nabbed non-exclusive rights to animated series Futurama, which will join the network in November. (It is unclear whether Futurama will leave Syfy at that...

On the surface, Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment seem to be two studios heading in opposite directions when it comes to business strategy.
Disney is investing huge sums of money and resources into building direct-to-consumer streaming platforms. Sony Pictures has vowed to stay on its traditional studio path, dealing high-end content to the highest bidders. But the two companies found common ground in a massive U.S. movie licensing deal that was more than a year in the making for Sony.
News of the agreement cheered Marvel fans, as it promises to make Sony’s Marvel titles — including various “Spider-Man” movies — available alongside Disney’s Marvel vault on the Disney Plus platform. For industry insiders, the real news is how Disney and Sony rearranged the traditional post-theatrical map for movies on their path to profitability through a maze of TV exhibition windows.

The Walt Disney Company and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced a multi-year content licensing agreement for U.S. streaming and TV rights to Sony Pictures’ new theatrical releases across Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution’s vast portfolio of platforms including its streaming services Disney+ and Hulu, as well as linear entertainment networks including ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic. The deal covers theatrical releases from 2022-2026 and begins for each film following its Pay 1 TV window. The agreement builds upon the companies’ prior arrangement which saw Spe movies licensed to FX in the post-Pay 1 TV window.
The deal also grants rights to a significant number of Spe’s iconic library titles, ranging from the “Jumanji” and “Hotel Transylvania” franchises to Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters films, including Spider-Man.
This gives Disney enormous programming potential across its platforms and makes them key destinations for a robust collection of Spider-Man films.

Disney and Sony Pictures on Wednesday announced a major licensing agreement that will bring both library and upcoming film and TV titles to Disney+, Hulu, ABC, and FX and other Disney-owned cable channels. The pact, which covers everything from “Spider-Man” to “Jumanji,” is as sure a sign as ever that Sony will not be launching its own streaming service.

Disney and Sony have reached a multi-year deal for the post-pay-1 release window, a pact that will make Spider-Man and other major franchises eligible to stream on Disney+ for the first time.
The flagship streaming service and Hulu are among many platforms covered by the agreement, which the official announcement called “unprecedented.” A host of platforms under the Disney tent are involved, including ABC, FX, Freeform. No specific plans for Disney+ have yet been finalized, but Marvel fans had been wondering when Spidey and others would appear alongside the rest of the streaming stable. For complicated legal reasons, the franchise has not been a full-fledged member of the Disney-controlled Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney has set a massive movie licensing pact with Sony Pictures for the U.S. that promises to bring Spider-Man and other Marvel properties to Disney Plus starting with Sony’s 2022 release slate.
The wide-ranging deal, which runs through Sony’s 2026 theatrical slate, also calls for Sony titles to run across Disney’s array of streaming and linear platforms, making it unprecedented in scope as it covers Disney Plus, Hulu, FX Networks, ABC, Disney Channels and Freeform. It also includes a significant number of library titles that will be spread among various outlets. Hulu will gain access to what Disney described as “a significant number” of library titles starting in June.

Upcoming Sony movies will head to Disney platforms after they stream on Netflix
Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment have agreed to a multiyear licensing deal that will grant Disney rights to Sony’s upcoming films following their streaming run on Netflix.
Earlier this month, Sony and Netflix agreed to a streaming deal that sees Netflix replace Starz as the place for Sony films to premiere after their theatrical and home entertainment runs. Disney has access to Sony’s films following Netflix’s exclusive window; so-called “Pay-1 windows” typically last for 18 months.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Newly knighted Sir Sam Mendes mixed with onscreen sovereigns (from “The Crown” and “Game of Thrones”) and Hollywood royalty at the 20th annual AFI Awards, presented Jan. 4 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

FX is known for its edge and unpredictability. But one of the secrets to the brand’s success over the past 25 years has been management stability.
Under the leadership of FX Networks and FX Prods. chairman John Landgraf, the company has coalesced into a tight-knit group of seasoned pros in programming, marketing, production, research, business affairs, distribution and the myriad other disciplines that drive a linear cable network. Key Landgraf lieutenants — including entertainment president Eric Schrier, original programming president Nick Grad, marketing chief Stephanie Gibbons, program strategy president Chuck Saftler and communications chief John Solberg — have tenures of 15 years or more. All but Gibbons have been with FX since before Landgraf arrived in 2004. When Landgraf was promoted the following year to president, it marked his first experience at the top of a sizable organization.
“I thought I needed to be smart and know everything,” Landgraf recalls. In short order he learned a crucial lesson.

But now that the euphoria over the blockbuster pact is beginning to subside, questions are re-emerging about the practical side of integrating the Fox assets and executives into the Disney portfolio and team. As one observer put it, “the honeymoon is over.”
