Masahiro Sakurai, the director for Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. franchise, has confirmed that next week’s E3 2013 Nintendo Direct presentation will include debut footage for the next game in the popular series.
Sakurai made the announcement on his Twitter account, (translation via NeoGAF) saying:
“I have an announcement. During the Nintendo Direct to be broadcast from 11Pm on the night of June 11th, the first trailer of the new entry in the ‘Super Smash Bros.” series will be broadcast. For the first time, simultaneously across the world! Do not miss it.”
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata first announced the Wii U/3Ds Super Smash Bros. two years ago at E3 2011 — apparently, he did so without even telling Masahiro Sakurai about it beforehand — but very little is known about the game itself.
The only things we know for sure is that the new Super Smash Bros. will be a crossover title...

You know a game company is coming out swinging when they hold a 22 minute long product showcase less than three weeks after E3, but that's exactly what Nintendo did last night. Courtesy of another Nintendo Direct internet broadcast, Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Amie, was accompanied by members of the Tree House and Nintendo staff to show off new hardware and software for the 3Ds as well as updates about games for the Wii and Wii U. Basically, if you thought something was missing from Nintendo at E3, they covered it last night.
The stream started off with Fils-Amie introducing the 3Ds Xl, an upgraded version of their current portable the 3Ds. The redesigned hardware featured screens that were 90% bigger (4.88 inches on the top and 4.18 inches on the bottom) than the ones on the 3Ds along with extended battery life (going from 3 – 5 up to 3.5 – 6.5). One of the other things that...

Super Smash Bros may be undergoing a major facelift – at least on the development side. Nintendo of America announced that Namco Bandai would be taking over the development from Hal Laboratory.
This could be a major move by Nintendo in the wake of Sony’s Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, which features similar gameplay to past Super Smash Bros titles, but features Sony’s character roster instead.
Kid Icarus team Sora will be partnered on development, which will continue to be spearheaded by creator Masahiro Sakurai. Yoshito Higuchi will serve as the game director.

During Nintendo’s Direct press conference, president Satoru Iwata gave us a first glimpse at the next Super Smash Bros. game. The latest game in the series is currently in the works for both the 3Ds and the Wii U, and has some serious heavy hitters involved in its development, as Namco Bandai has signed on to aid the project.
Masahiro Sakurai still seems to be the lead developer, but producer Kobayashi and Yoshito Higuchi, the director of the Tales series, are also contributing.
We’re still a long way out from seeing how this is going to play out, but any news regarding Super Smash Bros. is good news, right?
This shouldn’t cause too much alarm. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was co-developed by Monolith Soft (Xenoblade Chronicles, Xenosaga), Paon (Dk King of Swing,) and Game Arts (Grandia series, Lunar series).
