Exclusive: Paul Davidson, former head of The Orchard and Idw Entertainment, has launched development on a series adaptation of I Think We’ve Been Here Before, a new novel from bestselling author Suzy Krause.
Slated for global release via Lake Union Publishing and Radiant Press in Canada on September 24, the book is described as an inspiring and quirky family drama with a fantastical genre twist. It tells the story of the Jorgensen clan, watching as they prepare for the inevitable, after an official NASA announcement comes through indicating that a cosmic blast is set to render humanity extinct within a matter of months. As the planet holds its collective breath to see what happens next, this family proves determined to live every chaotic, emotional, hopeful and loving moment as if it’s their last.

Exclusive: Jim Hosking, the award-winning British filmmaker behind idiosyncratic Sundance titles The Greasy Strangler and An Evening with Beverly Luff Lin, has been tapped to direct Gleek, a sports action comedy that has Tim Heidecker and Dave Kneebone of renowned comedy-focused production company Abso Lutely amongst its producers.
Also produced by former Orchard and Idw Entertainment head Paul Davidson (upcoming Electric Dreams remake) and screenwriter Fabian Marquez (Better Luck Tomorrow), who together penned the script, the film tells the story of a hapless young man who discovers that his overactive salivary glands qualify him to compete in a secret, underground competition that holds the key to restoring his family’s good name.
In a statement on the project, Hosking shared that his mission in setting out to make a new film is “to take viewers on a trip they’ve never taken the likes of before,...

Netflix has been a boon to many in these uncertain times of furloughing and isolation, and its regular cycling of fresh content today brings us a pair of new movies and the second season of a sitcom.
An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn is a bizarre comedy from The Greasy Strangler writer-director Jim Hosking. The story centers on Lulu Danger, a small town waitress working in a coffee shop managed by her insecure husband, who attends the titular event due to its star attraction being a man she has an at-first unexplained history with. Prior to this, a series of convoluted interpersonal encounters play out, performed by a cast studded with talented actors known for comedy, including Aubrey Plaza, Craig Robinson, Jermaine Clement and Matt Berry, who manage to elevate material that is at times a little too surreal for its own good.

When director Jim Hosking came out with his film The Greasy Strangler in 2016, I was intrigued by the Bad Boy Bubby feel that the trailer showed me, and the odd-ball obscurity of the tone. I didn’t end up liking the film, though. It annoyed me too often for me to enjoy it and I felt like it went the “let’s make a bad movie so people make a fuss about it” route. So, scroll forward to last year, 2018, and the release of Hosking’s An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, written by both Hosking himself and David Wike (Out There). It wasn’t on my radar. We go behind the scenes with the creators responsible for Adult Swim’s surreal, uncomfortable, deafening new cop show.
Adult Swim’s tendency to eschew expectations and swing for the fences is practically the norm. In spite of over a decade’s worth of alternative series, Tropical Cop Tales is without a doubt one of the strangest things to ever grace the network. At its surface level the show lampoons basic cop procedurals, but it operates with such an exaggerated, unnerving tone. It’s as if a Tommy Bahama set up a location within David Lynch’s Black Lodge. It’s this extreme, uncomfortable energy that’s become a trademark of the show’s creators, Jim Hosking and Toby Harvard.
Hosking and Harvard have proven to be some of the most unusual emerging filmmakers of today. Their film, The Greasy Strangler is a uniquely strange endeavor, but...

Now that the industry is past its beginning-of-the-year overviews (check out IndieWire’s Most Anticipated TV Shows of 2019), February is upon us. As the film world remains focused on last year in the lead up to the Oscars, there’s still plenty of new series on the TV side worthy of attention. As always seems to be the case when looking at the upcoming calendar for a given month, there is a wide range of offerings across streaming, broadcast, and cable. These also traverse different genres, covering both scripted and unscripted shows.

One year ago, the Sundance Film Festival opened its doors to independent television. In the same way Robert Redford’s Park City playground built bridges between Hollywood’s longstanding studio world and the open-air, burgeoning indie film space, so too did the festival want to connect a booming television industry with the creative minds operating outside of it.
“Last year was such an experiment,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro told Indiewire. “It was [set up] to see what worked and what made sense.”
Like any first trial, the inaugural Indie Episodic Section had its successes and slip-ups. Sundance operated as it should: connecting fresh talent with eager buyers, but the atmosphere around television was far different from the one for film. Multiple TV projects sold to vaunted distribution platforms (like Starz and FX), while attendance issues created a conflicting in-the-room perception of the screenings’ overall impact.

Writer-director Jim Hosking doesn’t think like a regular filmmaker, or, at least, in the narratively conventional sense. What is most important to Hosking, who first gained attention for his film “The Greasy Strangler,” is to create a world only he can conceive. His films are filled with the kind of unique characters that you have never seen before in cinema. And because of this, the filmmaker has his fair share of detractors, but the fact that Hosking has managed to find a way to break out of the mold with such a unique brand of filmmaking is something to celebrate.

Three words: Not. Greasy. Enough. For those whom such brevity does not suffice (such as the Screen Anarchy editors), I'll elaborate. An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn represents the sophomore effort of The Greasy Strangler helmer Jim Hosking. The relative success of that first film, seems to have attracted the attention of some honest-to-goodness professional actors. But the mere presence of Aubrey Plaza, Jermaine Clement, Craig Robinson, and Matt Berry does not a successful comedy make. Not that they don't acquit themselves admirably, because they do. It's just... this is a Jim Hosking film -- can I say that after only one other film? And for the most part these capable thespians have been...

So what exactly is the plot to “An Evening With Beverly Luff Lin?” Good question. In fact, when we spoke with star Aubrey Plaza back at the film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, she had the same question, saying that the offbeat comedy was one of the craziest things she’s ever made.
“It’s really hard for me to explain why, but it’s kind of like a wild ride,” Plaza told TheWrap. “You just have to strap in and let go.”
Indeed, the film is incredibly weird and, as is repeated in the its trailer, “magical.” Director Jim Hosking, who directed the equally bizarre horror comedy “The Greasy Strangler,” was originally asked to make the weirdest film ever, only to find out he had made it too weird. From there, they came up with the character and story to “An Evening With Beverly Luff...

After being part of Fantastic Fest 2018, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, British director Jim Hosking’s second feature after The Greasy Strangler, is now in theaters, on VOD and Digital HD. In the film, Emile Hirsch is Shane, the temperamental manager of a coffee shop who prefers to lay off his own wife, Lulu (Aubrey Plaza), rather than one of his other cashiers. That inherent rarity of Hirsch's character leads him to commit a robbery simply because his wife -- now always bored with no work or a good TV set at home -- told him that his brother of Indian origin (played by Sam Dissanayake) had more money than him. Eventually, and almost by chance, Lulu meets Colin (Jemaine Clement), who has been hired...

An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn (Jim Hosking)
Writer-director Jim Hosking seems determined to entertain–and divide. From a segment in The ABCs of Death 2 to his feature debut The Greasy Strangler, it was made crystal clear that Hosking has a fascination for deviants and dark comedy. With An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn, he lands on a sort of strange hybrid between David Lynch and Napoleon Dynamite. Incorporating the uncanny valley of the former and the indie ineptitude of the latter, the result is an off-kilter, at times hilarious film that nevertheless loses some of its impact as it stumbles through its own delirium. – Mike M.

If you’re not familiar with filmmaker Jim Hosking’s first feature film, “The Greasy Strangler,” then you’re missing out on one of the most interesting, unique, and hilarious films of the last 5 years. In 2016, Jim Hosking introduced us to The Greasy Strangler, and now he’s returned with another unique and unforgettable comedy, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn. Featuring a cavalcade of comedy, the film stars Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement, Craig Robinson, Emile Hirsch, Matt Berry, and Sky Elobar (who also co-starred in The Greasy Stranger). Beverly Luff Linn follows an unsatisfied married woman (Plaza) who is on a journey to reunite with her enigmatic ex (Robinson), all while an awkward hitman (Clement) tags along, and her husband (Hirsch) is hot on her trail.

After his debut feature The Greasy Strangler, a sort of mix between quirky romantic/comedy indie cinema and exploitation/B movies, British director Jim Hosking is back with An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, stepping away from horror but maintaining a general sense of total extravagance, with humorous moments, and adding a halo of mystery to the plot. Over the course of its eight-day run, Fantastic Fest 2018 played host to over 100 feature and short films, and Daily Dead had the opportunity to screen numerous titles while in Austin for all the festivities. Here are my thoughts on three wildly different films I had the opportunity of seeing: Jeremy Saulnier’s Hold the Dark, Luz from up-and-coming director Tilman Singer, and the latest from The Greasy Strangler’s Jim Hosking, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn.
Hold the Dark: For his latest movie, Jeremy Saulnier re-teams with Macon Blair to bring William Giraldi’s novel Hold the Dark to life, and while the adaptation features strong performances, stunning cinematography, and perfectly showcases Saulnier’s keen abilities as a storyteller who never shies away from provocative and challenging material, as a whole, I just never really connected with Hold the Dark as a viewer, and its rumination on the...

After the grossest of gross-out comedies, The Greasy Strangler, writer-director Jim Hosking returned to the Sundance Film Festival this year for his follow-up, with quite a bigger cast. Following a strange night surrounding a “magical” event, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, starring Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch, and Craig Robinson, continues Hoskings’ peculiar brand of comedy, albeit in a slightly more palatable form. Ahead of an October release, the first trailer has now arrived.
“I think it’s strange that I do make these kinds of films when I don’t watch anything remotely like them,” Hosking tells Film4. “I don’t watch comedies, I watch serious stuff and emotional films and sad films, I’m much more drawn to sad, human kinds of films. Maybe that’s just how I am as a person, and then when I make stuff, I need to have a release, so...

It is a case of better late than never, letting you know that there is a new poster and trailer for Jim Hosking`s next feature film An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn. Hosking's made many kinds of impressions a couple years ago with the very absurd and slippery Greasy Strangler, He looks to be in form top with the absurdisms once again. For those of you who were not fond of the lubed up willy wonka from Greasy Strangler will be pleased to know that there appears to be none of that in this new film. Rest assured you can watch the trailer below, with limited ick factor, and not be grossed out. Lulu Danger's unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the...

Want to see a weird, wild and wacky movie trailer? Well, below you'll find the trailer for a little film called An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn. The movie has a great cast that includes Aubrey Plaza, Emile Hirsch, and Jemaine Clement and it was directed by Jim Hosking, who previously directed The Greasy Strangler. This new movie looks a lot more fun than The Greasy Strangler. It definitely looks like a fun screwball movie and you get a taste of that in the synopsis and trailer below:
After getting fired by her scheming husband Shane Danger (Emile Hirsch) from his cappuccino shop, dissatisfied Lulu Danger (Aubrey Plaza) is stunned when a TV commercial for “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn For One Magical Night Only” reveals a mysterious man from her past (Craig Robinson). When Shane and his bumbling cohorts steal the cashbox from Lulu’s adopted vegan brother...

I defy you to name me a stranger, more irreverent modern comedy than 2016’s The Greasy Strangler. Go ahead, I'll wait. The only movie that may have a shot at meeting such a high bar is director Jim Hosking’s follow-up, An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn starring Aubrey Plaza. "Although I don't know quite what's going on, I'm having a great time, Lulu." Universal + Content Group have unveiled the first official trailer for a bizarre, funky, indie comedy titled An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, then also played at the Rotterdam and Galway Film Festivals. This is the second film by Jim Hosking and the follow-up to his uber-weird The Greasy Strangler from a few years ago. Aubrey Plaza stars as Lulu Danger, whose unsatisfying marriage takes a turn for the worse when a mysterious man from her past comes to town to perform an event called "An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn; For One Magical Night Only." The eccentric cast includes Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch, Craig Robinson, Matt Berry, Maria Bamford, Sky Elobar, and Jacob Wysocki. This is all just way too weird for me, but I...

Now it’s time for “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn.”
It’s heartening to see a daring, unconventional indie filmmaker go from nothing to a director who quickly lands on the radar and finds talent that responds to their film. Take filmmaker Jim Hosking, he made a big splash with “The Greasy Strangler” at Sundance in 2016, a polarizing film that a lot of people actually didn’t like and many fell into “genuine provocateurs and many would-be shock purveyors” camp of cinema.

“Legion” dance partners Aubrey Plaza and Jemaine Clement transition to big-screen scene partners with “An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn.” Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for comedy, which debuted in the Next section at January’s Sundance Film Festival. That was British director and co-writer Jim Hosking’s second consecutive trip to Park City with a project; he premiered his feature foray, “The Greasy Strangler,” there in 2016.

Entering its 14th year as one of the country’s leading genre festivals, Fantastic Fest announced its first round of titles, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. The Austin-based festival will host the world premieres of World War II horror-thriller “Overlord,” produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, as well as “The Raid” director Gareth Evans’ gothic horror “Apostle,” starring Dan Stevens and Michael Sheen. Another alum from “The Raid,” Iko Uwais, leads “The Night Comes for Us,” a thrilling bone-cruncher from “V/H/S/2” scribe Timo Tjahjanto.
After a highly successful premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning” will play the festival ahead of its theatrical release later this year. Fantastic Fest will also shine a light on two rarely-screened South Korean films; “Ban Geum-ryeon,” from one of Park Chan-Wook’s directing idols Kim Ki-Young, and Park Nou-Sik’s “Quit Your Life.”

To shape the visual language of “Sorry to Bother You,” production designer Jason Kisvarday familiarized himself with the history of Oakland, Calif., where the story is set and the film was shot — and where writer-director Boots Riley grew up.
“He’s more or less the unofficial mayor there. I absorbed all I could about his experiences and then translated them for my designs,” says Kisvarday, whose credits include “Swiss Army Man” and director Jim Hosking’s upcoming “An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn.”
“Sorry,” an Annapurna Pictures release and a Grand Jury Prize nominee at Sundance, casts Lakeith Stanfield of “Atlanta” fame as Cassius Green, an impecunious black man who finds success as a telemarketer when he mimics a white accent.
Kisvarday transitioned the color palettes in the character’s environments to parallel his journey. At the start, avocado greens, wood grains and orange carpeting dominate his apartment, a makeshift...

U.S. cable network IFC and British broadcaster Channel 4 have ordered Year of the Rabbit, a six-part comedy starring Toast of London’s Matt Berry. The two broadcasters have commissioned the show from All3Media-backed Objective Fiction after it was piloted by C4 last year.
The news was announced today at the Atx Television Festival in Austin.
The series follows a group of Victorian detectives; Berry, who stars in Jim Hosking’s An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn and Matt Groening’s Netflix animation Disenchantment, plays Detective Inspector Rabbitt, a hardened booze-hound who’s seen it all, and his new, hapless, by-the-books partner, played by Parade End’s Freddie Fox. Guessing what The Greasy Strangler director Jim Hosking had in mind for a follow-up was always a bit of a poser. Whether he would slip into A Straight Story style deviation or lounge in that oily (dis)comfort zone he fashioned so well with Tgs, was anybody’s guess. As it turns out, An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn seems like a room tone re-hash in terms of kitsch/chic bravura and character types. At times it’s so similar to his bombastic debut, Aewbll could be seen as a waddling appendage. The same kind of gluey, translucent pink opening credits lights up the cinema like a disco brothel bingo hall while Andrew Hung’s synth stabs flower into robot fart fusing grooves.
The story starts in a crusty back street similar to where Big Ron and son repeatedly barked “bullshit artist!” at each other. Aewbll then introduces us to the wonky,...

In 2016, writer/director Jim Hosking burst his way onto the Sundance scene with The Greasy Strangler. His feature-film debut shocked and rocked Midnight audiences with its unique blend of grotesque imagery and gauche comedy. It was a film that will be burned forever in the minds of the audiences that were subjected to it, and has left many people wondering where Hosking could possible go from here.
With his new film, An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn, Hosking takes his embryonic brand of comedy that he established Greasy Strangler, and expands upon it with exuberant success. The plot of the film circles around the players in a small-time heist, and a mysterious and magical being known only as, Beverly Luff Linn (Craig Robinson). It’s a MacGuffin-riddled narrative that ensures that the audience is never one step ahead of the story.
