- In December 2007, Gibbs was just weeks away from giving birth when she first noticed a lump in her breast. Two doctors told her it was no cause for concern and probably just a blocked milk duct. But just months after having baby Gigi and after pushing for further treatment because she felt something was wrong, the actress was told she had a particularly aggressive cancer. She was given the five year all-clear in April 2013. She said she was "really content" to have reached the milestone but in August she had a seizure while on holiday in Devon. She was taken to hospital and was diagnosed with two brain tumours. She died in the early hours of Tuesday 11th November 2014 at The Hospice in the Weald, Kent, with family by her side. She was 41.
- Gave birth to her only child at age 34, a daughter Gigi Pitman on January 30, 2008. Child's father is her boyfriend (now widowed husband), Ashley Pitman.
- (September 17, 2012) Married her longtime boyfriend & father of her 4-year-old daughter, Gigi, Ashley Pitman.
- From the day I first visited my GP with a lump in my breast, to the moment I was finally diagnosed with breast cancer, three long months elapsed. In that times I was misdiagnosed twice, had given birth to my daughter Gigi and was unwittingly breast feeding. When I was eventually diagnosed with breast cancer, the tumour had already spread to my lymph nodes. To this day I have no idea if those months made the difference between my cancer spreading. But I can't help but wonder.
- On the day I started to lose my hair from the chemo, I was changing (my daughter's) nappy and she reached up and stroked my head. She gave me such strength through the toughest of times.
