Pride started early in 2024 with the SXSW premiere of “Sense8” actor Brian J. Smith’s debut documentary “A House Is Not a Disco,” a kaleidoscopic look at the LGBT past and present of Fire Island. Part fly-on-the-wall immersion — Smith invokes Frederick Wiseman when talking about it — part introductory guide for newbies who maybe knew a bit on how Fire Island Pines is a gay mecca but don’t really know what all the fuss is about, it’s an exuberant, colorful, many-faceted view of a place where many gay men first felt fully free to be themselves completely uninhibited. Or as Smith puts it, it was where he “learned how to be a gay man.”
Still seeking distribution, “A House Is Not a Disco” is remarkable for capturing that Fire Island Pines is a place where joy is currency — but far from the only emotion to be experienced there. Smith...

It’s a legendary place, a place so talked-about in LGBTQ+ circles for so long that to those who haven’t been there in person it seems like a dream, but Fire Island Pines has never been captured on film like this before. Even if you’ve been a regular there, you might not recognise it as first presented: off-season, a haze of drizzle in the air, the streets empty, under a blanket of silence. It’s so cold in winter, says Brian J Smith’s first interviewee, that even the deer leave.
Screened as part of 2024’s South by Southwest, Smith’s film is an insider portrait of the place and a love letter composed on behalf of the community to which it has meant so much. “I’ve been here almost continually since 1968,” says that first contributor. “Everywhere I look I see stories.” He and his partners are...

The Pines on Fire Island is a legendary place, a place which has meant the world to generations of gay men in the US – a refuge, a place of discovery and transformation, and the site of fabulous parties. Screened as part of SXSW 2024, Brian J Smith’s documentary explores it in film. It’s a deeply personal project for the first time director, as he explained when we met just before the festival. It was also a challenging thing to take on, but something he was ready for.
“I've been an actor for 20 years. A lot of my stuff has been on television, and I feel like I've been on set most of my adult life. You pick up things and you learn how the sausage gets made. And to be honest, I think I've always been a little bit more interested in this side of the process.

Netflix will continue helping people look for love — as long as they don’t see their potential partner.
The streamer has ordered two more seasons of its unscripted series Love Is Blind, which will take the show through its seventh installment. Netflix has also set a premiere date of Feb. 14 — Valentine’s Day — for season six.
The renewal is something of a no-brainer for Netflix, as Love Is Blind is consistently one of its more popular unscripted shows. Season five, which premiered in September, spent five weeks on Netflix’s worldwide top 10 list; the show has also made Nielsen’s streaming top 10 a dozen times in 2023, amassing 9.6 billion minutes of viewing time in those weeks.

Netflix has renewed reality dating series “Love Is Blind” for its sixth and seventh seasons, with Season 6 set for a Valentine’s Day premiere.
The series follows singles who want to be loved for who they are, who have signed up for a less conventional approach to modern dating, and will choose someone to marry without ever seeing them based on a series of conversations through a wall. Over several weeks, the newly engaged couples will move in together, plan their weddings and find out if their physical connections match the strong emotional bonds developed in the pods. The arrival of their wedding dates tests whether the realities of external factors will push them apart or they’ll marry the person they fell blindly in love with.
Nick and Vanessa Lachey host the series, which hails from Kinetic Content. Executive producers include creator Chris Coelen, Ally Simpson, Brent Gauches, Eric Detwiler and Brian Smith.

FX‘s Class of ’09 is taking the FBI genre to another level on Hulu, presenting a story spanning three distinctive points in time. Centering around a young class of FBI agents, the series tracks their journey through the system and the changing U.S. criminal justice system which is altered by artificial intelligence. Poet (Kate Mara) and Hour (Sepideh Moafi) are among those agents. Classmates and roommates, Poet and Hour’s bond is explored in the three timelines, beginning in 2009, in present-day 2023, and in the future. “I was intrigued by exploring the three different time periods in a person’s life,” Mara tells TV Insider. Admittedly, the actress says, “When I read the first couple of episodes, Brian Tyree [Henry] was already attached, so I was really excited to get the chance to work with him.” Along with Henry, Brian J. Smith features beside Mara and Moafi. (Credit: Richard Ducree...

Hulu and FX’s newest release in the sci-fi/thriller genre is a fresh take on a group of FBI trainees who grow up to move to separate paths in life, only to be brought back together because of a common problem. Created by Tom Rob Smith, who also authored the story Class of ’09, it centers around FBI graduates, each of whom has separate interests in life, but nobody is willing to lay down their cards, at least not this early in the series. The show stars Kate Mara, Brian Tyree Henry, Brian Smith, and Sepideh Moafi, among others, and although it’s too early to give a decisive verdict, some of the actors are doing justice to their roles. Here’s what happens in the first two episodes:

Before we even meet the class of 2009 in “Class of ’09,” we’re in the year 2034 being introduced to Tayo Michaels (Brian Tyree Henry), who — according to a news chyron — is the director of the FBI. Soon after, when we’re in what the show’s chyrons repeatedly call “The Past,” we learn Tayo is, surprise surprise, a member of the titular class, and he’s struggling to pass a physical at Quantico — a physical he must complete in order to become an FBI agent.
So… are we meant to think the future FBI Director really isn’t going to graduate? Should we be wondering if he only made it into the Bureau because of special treatment? Or, assuming the flash-forward is meant to steer attention away from if he graduates and toward how he graduates, should we be focused on the casual discrimination he faces from one of his fellow students?...

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.
It was also, however, extremely confusing.

The premise of the limited series “Class of ‘09” is a familiar form of dystopia: in the near future, law enforcement has come to rely on technology that skirts the line between police work and a police state. “Class of ‘09” shares a blueprint with classics like “Minority Report,” then adds a timely twist. The FX show’s Orwellian innovation is an algorithm powered by artificial intelligence, the kind of tool now at the center of all kinds of public anxiety, including the ongoing writers strike.
“Class of ‘09” is created and written by Tom Rob Smith, the British scribe best known to Americans as the force behind “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the second installment of Ryan Murphy anthology “American Crime Story.” That season, an underrated masterpiece, scrambled the typical chronology of true crime, beginning with the titular murder and winding backwards through Andrew Cunanan’s serial killing spree.

At times you may think you’re watching a reboot of ABC’s Quantico (2015-18). Then you’re suddenly thrust into a futuristic Minority Report-style sci-fi allegory. Scribe Tom Rob Smith’s (London Spy) intriguingly cluttered thriller Class of ’09, the latest provocative FX drama to go straight to streaming on Hulu, ambitiously toggles between three time periods, when perhaps one would have sufficed. In 2009, we meet an FBI training class, including former nurse and underdog champion Poet (House of Cards’ soulful Kate Mara), disillusioned insurance agent Tayo (Atlanta’s brooding Brian Tyree Henry), Iranian immigrant offspring Hour (Sepidah Moafi) and a few slices of generic and underwritten beefcake played by such familiar faces as Brian J. Smith and Jake McDorman. They’re all put through the physical and psychological wringer, as we’ve seen many times before. The present-day storyline, set in 2023, finds these now-seasoned agents well ...

Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

A timely drama that contemplates AI-era criminal justice, FX on Hulu’s “Class of ‘09” sounds like must-watch TV for admirers of futuristic realism. The subgenre, also referred to as lo-fi sci-fi, swaps hyper-mechanized cornucopias with the grounded, gradually evolved settings of “After Yang,” “Her” and “Ex Machina.”
Created by novelist Tom Rob Smith, who earned a name for himself at FX (and an Emmy nomination) writing “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” the show cuts between three timelines and explores an ethical realm similar to “Minority Report’s.” Emmy nominees Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara lead a cast that includes Sepideh Moafi (“Black Bird”), Jon Jon Briones (“Acs: The Assassination of Gianni Versace”), Rosalind Eleazar (“Slow Horses”), Jake McDorman (“Limitless”), Brian J. A proper law enforcement show features high-octane scenes, a fast pace, and a few twists and turns here and there.
It becomes much more special if the characters stand out uniquely or develop a bond akin to a chosen family.
Class of '09 is a show set inside the FBI that follows a group of unique characters whose journey to the FBI is not typical. These characters had lived another life before joining the Bureau, which is supposed to make them different from others.
Sometimes, we talk about something taking off before it crashes and burns. But rarely do we talk about something igniting, failing to take off, and disintegrating at an excruciatingly slow pace.
Class of '09 is not breaking new ground, with some excellent FBI shows having been broadcast in the last ten years.
Based on the setting, it might be compared to Quantico, starring Priyanka Chopra. But...

As the WGA strike continues to unfold, one of the key issues at its center has to do with artificial intelligence. While AI may be a relatively new concern for many in Hollywood, it’s old hat to Tom Rob Smith and Joe Robert Cole, two of the executive producers behind FX’s upcoming drama “Class of ’09.” Though their new series examines the dangers of law enforcement relying too heavily on AI, Smith isn’t concerned that AI in its modern form will fully replace writers.
“I’m less worried than other people are right now on the story creation, but I could be just naive about that right now,” Smith, who previously served as an executive producer and writer for “The Assassination of Gianna Versace: American Crime Story,” told TheWrap.

Plot: Spanning multiple decades and told across interweaving timelines, the series examines the nature of justice, humanity and the choices we make that ultimately define our lives and legacy.
Review: Legal thrillers and series about law enforcement are staples of the small screen and rarely get the chance to play with the conventions of the genre. The new limited series Class of ’09 tries to upend expectations by using now-familiar narrative devices like flashbacks and flash-forwards to give us a series set in three distinct eras. Following a group of FBI agents in 2009, 2023, and 2034, we can see how these individuals change and grow closer and apart over four decades. Class of ’09 also uses the divisive concept of artificial intelligence to tell a prescient story that is not quite as thrilling as it should be. Anchored by another standout performance from Brian Tyree Henry, Class of ’09 is intriguing but uneven.

FX has released the trailer for their upcoming limited series “Class of ‘09,” a suspense thriller about a class of FBI agents dealing with the rise of artificial intelligence within the U.S. government. The eight-episode show, starring Brian Tyree Henry and Kate Mara, will premiere May 10 on Hulu.

“Claim to Fame” is a different type of series for Kinetic Content, a company best known for “Love Is Blind” and “The Ultimatum,” both on Netflix. But the lighthearted competition show — which premieres Monday on ABC — couldn’t have come at a better time.
“It’s an idea that makes you smile and taps into a pop culture confection: celebrity, mystery and gameplay. It’s a really fun show to watch and to play along with,” executive producer and Kinetic CEO Chris Coelen tells Variety.
The series, hosted by Kevin and Frankie Jonas, follows 12 celebrity relatives living under one roof and attempting to conceal their famous family. They will compete in challenges and form alliances while trying to avoid elimination and win the coveted 100,000 prize.
Coelen, Eric Detwiler and Scott Teti serve as executive producers. Paul Osborne serves as the showrunner and executive producer, while Brian Smith serves as director and executive producer.
