If a pair of talented actors go toe to toe and no one is around to watch, did it really happen? That’s a silly question, but it’s the type of thing you ponder while watching The Quarry, a well acted yet narratively inert picture that wastes Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham. The filmmakers may have thought that they were making the next No Country for Old Men or another modern neo western, but instead, they just took two skilled actors and marooned them within an obvious plot that takes forever to go where you know it needs to go. Shannan and Whigham do their best to make you ignore that, but it’s a bridge too far. The movie is a real slow burn, full of crime and mystery, but surprisingly little intrigue. A traveling preacher named David Martin (Bruno Bichir) picks up a drifter (Whigham) on the...

Steeple People: Teems Gets Spiritual in Rough-hewn Sophomore Film
It’s been over a decade since director Scott Teems delivered his warmly received debut, That Evening Sun (2009) an odyssey of Southern dysfunction which featured a stellar Hal Holbrook and took home major prizes at the SXSW Film Festival. Teems was set to return there with his sophomore film The Quarry before the cancellation of the 2020 festival. Perhaps this was a stroke of providence for Teems, whose long-awaited return falters precariously on familiarity and poorly conceived Mexican American composites with this adaptation of a 1995 novel by Damon Galgut.
Teems and co-writer Andrew Brotzman relocate the setting from post-apartheid South Africa to contemporary rural Texas in an effort to universalize Galgut’s specific racial divides.…...

Reverend David Martín’s (Bruno Bichir) fate wasn’t set in stone while driving down a Texas highway with a bottle of wine in his hand. He still had choices. Should he stop to assist a man (Shea Whigham) found face down in the dirt? Should he offer a ride to the place that will serve as his own new beginning? Should he confront him about a dark truth his conscience won’t ignore? You might say that being a man of God did seal his fate since it instilled a duty that guaranteed he would help this fallen soul back to his feet, but you’d be wrong. God didn’t speak to him, his guilt and sins did. Helping that drifter at his own peril was a voluntary act of penance.
David did so, however, because he had already confronted those sins and was hoping to walk out...

Laura D. Smith (It Follows), Kristin Mann (Midnight Special) produced.
International Film Trust (Ift) has picked up international rights to SXSW 2020 selection The Quarry starring Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham and begins talks with Efm buyers this week.
Shannon plays a small town Texas police chief who becomes suspicious when a mysterious preacher (Whigham) arrives to take over the local church. As the congregation is drawn to the newcomer’s unorthodox sermons, it is not long before the two men are locked in a game of cat and mouse.
The cast includes Catalina Sandino Moreno from Maria Full Of Grace and TV series The Affair.

Described as shades of Steinbeck and Faulkner, That Evening Sun helmer Scott Teems will see Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham reteam on his sophomore feature, The Quarry. A book to film adaptation of Damon Galgut’s novel (not a remake of the 1998 film of the same name), Deadline reports that production began in New Orleans with vet producer Laura D. Smith and Kristin Mann (To the Stars) producing in partnership with Rockhill Studios, Metalwork Pictures and Gold Star Films. Nor’easter helmer Andrew Brotzman wrote the screenplay.

The Bradford International Film Festival is typically an underground-friendly fest. This year appears to be no exception with two very special experimental film retrospectives, as well as a few modern underground-type flicks.
The 19th annual Biff will roll on April 11-21 at several locations around Bradford and Leeds in England, including the National Media Museum, Hebden Bridge Picture House, Hyde Park Picture House and other venues.
Biff is hosting a tribute to Stan Brakhage this year by screening the prolific filmmaker’s magnum opus, Dog Star Man, as well as a selection of his short films, from 1963′s legendary Mothlight to 1994′s Black Ice. There’s also going to be an epic-sized tribute/retrospective of experimental films from Austria, a country with a proud avant-garde filmmaking tradition that’s typically overlooked.
