Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren was slammed over the weekend for remarks she made about immigrants.
“You don’t just come into this country with low skills, low education, not understanding the language and come into our country because someone says it makes them feel nice,” she said during a segment on “Watters’ World” Saturday. “That’s not what this country is based on.”
Lahren’s observation is at odds with the country’s history of immigration and the words of the poem engraved on the Statue of Liberty, which literally reads: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

A Fox News tweet lauding Lahren’s position on the issue was quickly seized upon by critics who raked the contributor over the coals.
“I’d trade Xenophobic Rage Barbie for a hard working immigrant any day of the week and twice on Sundays,” said former Office of Government Ethics director Walter Shaub. “Contributing less than nothing to this country, she exists only to make lazy white supremacists ‘with low skills, low education, [barely] understanding the language’ feel nice.”

50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)

Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC after the drum beat failed to die down after he apologized on air for having suggested, on air, that someone might defecate in Sarah Palin’s mouth. “Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation,” Bashir said in an email first posted by Mediaite today. “It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments.” Meanwhile, MSNBC president Phil Griffin, whose weeks-long silence on the subject of Bashir has been deafening, said today in a statement: “Martin Bashir resigned today, effective immediately. But just as MSNBC is free to audition his possible replacements, isn't it unfair that Shuster is penalized for looking out for his own future?...

As rumored yesterday, MSNBC has indefinitely suspended renowned provocateur MSNBC Live host David Shuster. Yesterday the Internet at large guessed as much after it was reported that MSNBC president Phil Griffin “ripped Shuster a new one” in response to the host’s alleged filming of a pilot for CNN. We now honor the memory of “MSNBC’s David Shuster” (2002–2010) with this: an anthology of videos commemorating his greatest hits.

A spokesperson for MSNBC confirmed the suspension, but declined to comment on the details.

Does MSNBC’s David Shuster have the biggest self-destructive streak on cable news or its biggest set of cojones?
Good Friday became Interesting Friday for the net’s 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. anchor and his employer. That morning, the New York Observer reported that Shuster had recently hosted a series pilot for CNN. While apparently under contract to MSNBC until December. And allegedly without the latter’s knowledge. That day, a blindsided and embarrassed Ms...

Although we here at Vf Daily were delighted to hear of David Shuster’s possible new CNN show—featuring rumored cameo by jurisprudence dreamboat Jeffrey Toobin!—MSNBC, Shuster’s current network, was not. According to Mediabistro, MSNBC president Phil Griffin “ripped [him] a new one over the phone.” Shuster did not appear on-air Friday, and the Huffington Post predicts that he “may be be off-air indefinitely.” Neither CNN nor MSNBC have commented about the incident on record, and Shuster, when reached by Mediabistro via phone, would only say that he “can’t talk about it.” This makes two communications mediums and counting from which Shuster has allegedly been barred.

MSNBC’s David Shuster, unrestrained Tweeting antagonist, might be getting his very own show on CNN, according to Felix Gillette at The New York Observer. Gillette reports that Shuster and Michel Martin of NPR recently filmed a pilot for the network that “featured medical and opinion segments, and included appearances by several current CNN contributors, including Chrystia Freeland, the U.S. managing editor for the Financial Times and Jeffrey Toobin of The New Yorker.” This rumor comes after a disastrous first quarter for CNN. According to The New York Times, the network’s “main hosts [lost] almost half their viewers in a year.” There may be hope yet in this potential new Shuster-Martin project, the wonkiness of which sounds like it would rival that of the tragically under-appreciated Fareed Zakaria G.P.S., which has, in the past, featured Steve Coll, Rory Stewart, and Vanity Fair’s own Michael Lewis as guests,...

Luke Russert was paneling with David Shuster earlier today, in what may have been the most shameless (and yes, sadly, entertaining) moments on cable news thus far this week. Taking off on a Daily Beast feature ranking the top political sex scandals in recent history, Russert took a decidedly sporty style to analyzing what makes a political sex scandal interesting and who has suffered the most political shame: Democrats or Republicans. Video of the sophomoric and salacious video below:...

MSNBC anchor David Shuster, while not technically on the "White House beat," has lots of experience covering the White House both from within and without. In the balance of our interview, he offers insights into the process that differ significantly from what we've heard in other Inside the White House Press Corps interviews. As promised, here is my full interview with Shuster, in which he discusses covering the White House, lazy reporters, interviewing space aliens, plus the first two parts.

MSNBC's David Shuster has been absent from Twitter for a little over a month after taking heat from MSNBC for unloading on costume journalist James O'Keefe. In this second preview from my interview with Shuster, I asked him how he feels about the "Free David Shuster" campaign, and Twitter in general.
Since it was fresh in my mind, I also asked him about the interruption-filled Brett Baier interview of President Obama.

MSNBC's David Shuster made an appearance at yesterday's White House briefing, and afterward, sat down for an interview for Mediaite. While not a regular presence in the briefing room, Shuster is more than qualified to render an opinion on the journalism being practiced there, and that distance allows him to make fresh observations. In this preview of our interview, I asked Shuster for his take on the position of people like Andrew Breitbart, Matt Drudge, and James O'Keefe in journalism. His response was rather surprising.

It’s looking like MSNBC management has indeed forbidden reporter David Shuster from Tweeting, or so suggest illicit Tweets emanating from the embattled Twitter page in question. Recall that Shuster’s Twitter went dark for three weeks following the journalist’s apparently inappropriate @-reply to the felonious James O’Keefe, in which Shuster predicted that the prison-bound O’Keefe will indeed be sent to prison. Shuster’s silence was rumored to be the result of a mandatory Twitter embargo—a theory that was all but confirmed by the reappearance—and immediate deletion—of his sudden Tweets, captured by Mediaite and pictured above. As of the writing of this blog post, Shuster’s feed remains quiet—louder in its silence than whatever equally poignant sound some Tweets harassing James O'Keefe would make.

I haven't watched MSNBC since my cable company took it off the basic digital package I have, and between the bizarre Keith Olbermann/Chris Matthews feuds and stuff like the video below, I might have to upgrade. It's from yesterday, when David Shuster and Tamron Hall were interviewed by a New York reporter about a story she wrote. It gets very odd. If she couldn't hear them, how did she answer so quickly? And if she was reading the screen and answering some questions, why not answer the others?

Following the presser via Twitter today, and The Donald's backing of Sister Carrie as beauty pageant queen, despite semi-nude shots and rightwing chat, was no doubt more fun than on TV. Here is a selection of favorite tweets as it was going down. Btw, I am @GregMitch. Garry Trudeau @Roland_Hedley: Minutes away: Trump to rule on moral fitness of semi-nude ditz to stay in cheesy contest. Could cut suspense w. chainsaw. At issue: Moral difference between semi-nude posing for sleazy photographer and semi-nude posing for tacky judges. David Shuster @shuster1600: Everybody involved in this story - from Prejean to Terrell to pageant officials to Trump, - everybody involved makes me want to vomit. Trudeau: He's "reviewed the pictures very carefully"! Done his homework! Pictures are "fine"! (On account of this being the 21st century.) Yaaaaaaaaay! "Carrie will remain Miss California!" A...

The secretive hiring of Ed Schultz by MSNBC executives has thrown the cable channel into a panic.
On Wednesday, Keith Olbermann announced on his show that Schultz would be getting his own liberal, "politically oriented show" in the 6 p.m. time slot -- bumping David Shuster's "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" to the 3-to-5 p.m. slot. The move forced "MSNBC Live," hosted by the net's chief Washington correspondent, Norah O'Donnell, out of the 3 p.m. position.

New York -- MSNBC named David Shuster as the anchor of "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," the nightly news program on politics and Washington news.
Shuster will replace David Gregory, who left the show created earlier this year when he became moderator of "Meet the Press."
Shuster has been an anchor at MSNBC for six years, although he ran into trouble earlier this year for a "pimped out" comment regarding Chelsea Clinton's role in her mother's presidential campaign. Shuster apologized and was suspended.
In addition to "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," Schuster will be an anchor and reporter on the news channel. He joined MSNBC in 2002 from Fox News Channel. Before that, he was political reporter for Katv in Little Rock, Ark., and began his career for CNN as an assignment editor and field producer.

New York -- Whether it was the constant on-air feuding between the anchors or the Gop's protests that it was getting a raw deal, MSNBC moved closer to the journalistic center over the weekend with news that Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann would no longer be anchoring Election Night programming.
That duty will pass to David Gregory, the chief White House correspondent who is being groomed for a possible MSNBC primetime slot and/or the moderator job on "Meet the Press." Matthews and Olbermann will remain as analysts, but Gregory will anchor the remaining primetime telecasts for the four presidential and vice presidential debates as well as Election Night.
MSNBC president Phil Griffin told The Hollywood Reporter that the channel made the decision Thursday night after re-evaluating the wisdom of having the two of them anchoring the coverage while at the same time giving opinions. He said the network decided...

Animosity among MSNBC anchors has reached a mile-high peak at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, with on-air squabbling between such big egos as Joe Scarborough, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and David Shuster.
Scarborough, who served in Congress as a Republican representative from Florida, seems to be particularly touchy being the only host who isn't openly pro-Democratic.
Yesterday, after Shuster referred to "your party, the Republican Party," Scarborough went off, sparking a seven-minute exchange.
"I will let you know that 'my party,' my party loathes...
