Update: The White House has weighed in on the SAG-AFTRA strike, a prospect that will lead to the shutdown of much of the entertainment business.
“The President believes all workers – including actors – deserve fair pay and benefits. The President supports workers’ right to strike and hopes the parties can reach a mutually beneficial agreement,” said Robyn Patterson, a White House spokesperson.
In May, President Joe Biden called for striking members of the Writers Guild of America to get “a fair deal they deserve as soon as possible.”
In the meantime, other members of the California delegation in Congress are commenting on the actors’ walkout.
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-ca) said, “Every worker deserves a good wage and working conditions. I urge both sides to come to a fair agreement that reflects the changes across the industry.”

Updated, 9:16 Am: Nury Martinez said that she is taking a leave of absence from her Los Angeles City Council position after the disclosure of an audio recording in which she made racist remarks in conversation with three others.
Martinez notably did not resign from the council, despite widespread calls from Democratic leaders that she do so.
“This has been one of the most difficult times of my life and I recognize this is entirely of my own making,” Martinez said in a statement. “At this moment, I need to take a leave of absence and take some time to have an honest and heartfelt conversation with my family, my constituents and community leaders.”

Washington, Sep 15 (Ians) The US Senate Homeland Security Committee grilled executives from Meta, TikTok, YouTube and Twitter over privacy and moderation failures on their respective platforms in recent years, saying that they “keep avoiding sharing really very important information with us”.
TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas, Twitter General Manager of Consumer and Revenue, Jay Sullivan, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox and YouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan testified before the panel late on Wednesday.
“I’ll be honest, I’m frustrated that all of you (who) have a prominent seat at the table when these business decisions are made were not more prepared to speak to specifics about your product development process, even when you are specifically asked if you would bring specific numbers to us today,” lamented committee Chair Senator Gary Peters.

Sen. Corey Booker (D-n.J.) delivered an impassioned speech Wednesday during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for Ketanji Brown Jackson, eliciting a visibly emotional response from the Supreme Court nominee who is poised to become the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.
Throughout his speech, Booker repeatedly emphasized the significance of Jackson’s nomination, invoking the achievements and struggles of Black Americans — both famous and otherwise — that paved the way for the federal judge’s bid for the Supreme Court.
“You did not get there because of some left-wing agenda.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti faced a relatively brisk confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday for his nomination as U.S. ambassador to India, and responded to one question over allegations that he was aware that one of his top advisers engaged in a pattern of sexual harassment but did not take action to stop it.
Last year, a Los Angeles Police Department officer sued the city, alleging that the mayor witnessed the harassment on the part of Rick Jacobs, yet did not take action. New York magazine ran an extensive piece earlier this month in which four people who worked with Garcetti and Jacobs alleged that the mayor was aware of his adviser’s behavior.
Jacobs has denied the claims, and Garcetti has previously denied that he witnessed harassment.
At Tuesday’s hearing, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-nh) said that she had “some concern” over the allegations, and “I...

I started writing these words on Jan. 20, 2021, a day of historical firsts: Kamala Harris was the first African American woman to be sworn in as Vice President of the United States of America.
One of the first orders of business for VP Harris, also of South Asian descent (another first) was to swear in the state of Georgia’s first African American and Jewish senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively; giving Georgia two Democratic Senators for the first time since 1992. Finally, VP Harris swore in California’s first Latino senator, Alex Padilla.
Senator Warnock, speaking about the personal significance of the day for him (it would have been his father’s 104th birthday), spoke of a “Covenant we share as Americans.”
That word, covenant, resonated very strongly with me. Why? As a noun, a covenant is “an agreement; contract; compact; or a protocol,” for example. As a verb, a “vow or pledge.

A decade ago, the crowds attending Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s first inauguration were so great that a flood of ticketholders got stuck throughout the ceremony in a Capitol Hill tunnel, a snafu that was dubbed the Purple Tunnel of Hell.
This time around, save for Capitol Hill police and National Guard troops, there wasn’t an attendee to be found around that tunnel.
There were, in fact, relatively few people at all at Wednesday’s inaugural swearing-in ceremony (in the low thousands), given the mandates of Covid-19 and the threats following the Capitol siege. Inside a vast security perimeter that surrounds the Capitol, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were sworn in at a ceremony that seemed designed to inspire a sense of relief more than anything.
That’s despite all of the anxieties leading up to the moment: Washington, D.

Democrats took control of the Senate for the first time since 2015, as Vice President Kamala Harris swore in her appointed successor, Alex Padilla, as well as Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, who won their races in Georgia this month.
“I need to catch my breath, so much is happening,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-ny), who now is the new majority leader.
The Senate split is 50-50 now, but Democrats will have the edge because Harris has a tie-breaking vote. That might be needed, as President Joe Biden tries to usher through a series of legislative priorities, including a $1.9 trillion Covid relief package and immigration reform.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-vt) will be the president pro tem of the Senate, which is third in line for the presidency following the vice president and speaker of the House.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he is appointing Alex Padilla to fill Kamala Harris’ Senate seat.
Padilla, who has been California’s secretary of state, will be the first Latino senator to represent the Golden State.
“Through his tenacity, integrity, smarts and grit, California is gaining a tested fighter in their corner who will be a fierce ally in D.C., lifting up our state’s values and making sure we secure the critical resources to emerge stronger from this pandemic,” Newsom said in a statement. “He will be a senator for all Californians.”
Newsom posted a video, taken on Monday evening, in which he asked Padilla whether he wanted to take the post.
“You serious?” Padilla says in the video.
“This is the official, this is the ask, brother,” Newsom says.
Near tears, Padilla says, “I’m honored, man, and I am humbled.”
His appointment will make history.

Hollywood politicos are keeping a close watch on California Gov. Gavin Newsom as he assembles a short list for filling the Senate seat about to be vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.

Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia is also said to have expressed his interest in the post. The most recent in a series of missteps hit California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday.
Mistakes by California officials have delayed data to the state’s coronavirus reporting system. Newsom’s administration has seen the recent resignation of top officials after the data reporting errors and an an ethics complaint about a $1 billion state deal.
After the data delays, Newsom held a press conference at which he said plainly, “I’m Governor. The buck stops with me.”
But now the Sacramento Bee reported that Newsom — who promised to cut his own pay as he ordered state workers’ checks to be cut by 10 percent — has been drawing his full monthly salary of $17,479.
That, with Californians suffering after Newsom closed all but essential businesses in March, shuttering film and TV production in the state. Newsom’s Plumpjack winery, however, was open until early July. PlumpJack, received a loan worth between $150,000 and $350,000 from the Paycheck Protection Program,...

The California Supreme Court today blocked a proposal that would split the state into three from reaching the November ballot, according to multiple sources.
The state’s high court said the measure, Proposition 9, shouldn’t be on the ballot because of the “substantial” questions raised about its validity. The court issued a brief order saying it intervened because the potential harm from permitting the measure to remain on the ballot outweighs any possible damage caused by delaying the measure for a future election.
The Planning and Conservation League filed a lawsuit arguing that the proposition amounted to a change to the state’s Constitution. As such, it requires a two-thirds vote of both legislative chambers before the matter could be put to voters.
Backed by billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper, Proposition 9 would carve the state into thirds: Northern California, encompassing San Francisco and 39 other counties; California, sweeping in Los Angeles...
