Blackout.I had saved my question about Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) until the last possible minute. Larry Fessenden, a disarmingly amiable man with an edge to his self-deprecating humor I recognized only too well, has a new werewolf movie out. If you know Larry’s movies—No Telling (1991), Habit (1995), Wendigo (2001), The Last Winter (2006), Beneath (2013), Depraved (2019), and now Blackout (2023)—you know it’s never just a matter of a monster. As we dug into its story of a lycanthropic curse doubling as a metaphor for an artist’s alcoholism and a town’s despair at a recent solar eclipse, I could see Larry the filmmaker turn into Larry the eager, devoted student and fan under the half-light of the black sun.Fessenden appears in the final minutes of Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), like a harbinger of the future’s unforgiving gaze, as an actor on the mid-century...

The career of Larry Fessenden and Glass Eye Pix, names synomonous with independent genre film, will be celebrated at MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) from the end of March through to April 19th. One of my all-time favorite horror events was experiencing a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale at the Overlook Film Festival in 2016. Such an incredible amount of work is put into these horror audio dramas from the cast, sound engineer, and especially series creators Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid. If they announce any new live performances, it's absolutely worth your time to make a trip to see it, but they're giving horror fans the ability to listen to new horror audio dramas from the comfort of their home every week.
Today, we have details on the launch of a a weekly Tales from Beyond the Pale podcast that will see a mix of new stories with content from their archives, featuring an impressive cast of horror talent. As we pass another marker on our way to subterranean forevers and/or meeting our makers (my money’s on Xenu), let’s lay on the brakes for a bit and count our horror blessings, shall we? 2018 was another great year, from the page to the screen and everything in between. Here are some of my favorite things that inundated my ears and eyeholes throughout the year:
Favorite Books
Chasing around two grandkids put a major cramp on my reading this year, unless I can include The Gingerbread Man on my list. However, I did squeeze in one earlier this year, and made a mad dash to finish another as it was a Christmas gift and I kind of figured it would make my list. P.S. I did read other books this year, but they were older and aged, much like myself.

Holiday horror was an under-appreciated horror sub-genre in past decades, but that's all changed in recent years with more Christmas-themed horror coming out than ever before. To satisfy your holiday horror thirst this Christmas, Beck Underwood and Glass Eye Pix have teamed up for The Creepy Christmas Film Festival, an online film festival that will serve as a digital advent calendar, providing horror fans with a new short every day in December:
New York City, 26 November 2018 — In 2008, filmmaker and animator Beck Underwood and NYC-based production company Glass Eye Pix attempted the unthinkable - creating a digital advent calendar that offered genre fans a new Christmas-themed horror short every day from December 1st through December 25th. Dubbed "The Creepy Christmas Film Festival", it was a resounding success, featuring a host of contributors including Mary Harron, Sara Driver, Jim Mickle, and Ti West.

Shudder’s new original series Deadwax is so darn good that parent network AMC might just steal it from them. Written and directed by Graham Reznick, starring Hannah Gross (Mindhunter), Evan Gamble (Hap and Leonard), Chester Rushing (Stranger Things) and Ted Raimi (Ash vs. Evil Dead), and after four episodes watched for review ahead of our interview with Reznick, Deadwax needs to be on your radar. Someone at AMC should grab this one to spool out into a longer format TV drama, as they enjoyed critically acclaimed success with The Terror this past summer. For those who might be unaware, Shudder […]

Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

College student Lucy (Brittany Snow: Pitch Perfect 2) comes up out of the New York City subway to find that all hell has broken loose: there’s gunfire and explosions everywhere, fires burning, mysterious troopers — terrorists? — in black rounding up residents (or killing them), no signs of NYPD or any other legitimate authorities. Terrified, baffled, and on the verge of becoming a victim of the sudden lawlessness, Lucy teams up with reluctant veteran Stupe (Dave Bautista: Blade Runner 2049) as they both attempt to get to safety… if such a place exists. Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (Cooties), this pacey U.S. invasion thriller picks up points for its premise, performances and photography, but the script passes up the chance for some political commentary.
The film’s extremely strong opening has college student Lucy (Brittany Snow) getting off the subway in Bushwick, New York and suddenly finding herself in the middle of a war zone, with armed militia on the streets. Dodging the hails of gunfire, Lucy is rescued by hulking ex-Marine Stupe (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Dave Bautista), who agrees to help her make it to her grandmother’s house, a few blocks away. In Bushwick, New York City resembles a militaristic wasteland. We’re to believe Texas has formed a Southern pact and is leading a new Civil War in the name of secession. It’s a scary reality that brings to light recent current events driven by unjust animosity. A made-up Brooklyn invasion and actual Dallas sniper shooting are horrifyingly similar topics, so you’d think Nick Damici and Graham Reznick’s script would be fueled with warnings, or anger, or revelations. You’d think there’d be something more to raging fires and black-suited militants. You would think – but that’s not the case. Crumbling skylines and Red-Dawn-meets-Purge vibes can only get you so far.
Events kickstart when Lucy (Brittany Snow) arrives in Bushwick with her presumed boyfriend (Arturo Castro). As they walk the subway platform, all train usage is suspended; their station oddly empty. Mr. Boyfriend goes above ground to take a peek,...

Hot off their classroom-zombie opus Cooties, directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott conceived Bushwick and turned scripting duties over to a couple of New York indie-filmmaking fixtures: Nick Damici (Stake Land) and Graham Reznick. Their combined forces resulted in a thriller that almost never stops moving, with Brittany Snow ably conveying Lucy’s discovery of her survival instinct and Dave Bautista diverges from his iconic wisecracking Drax to a more taciturn, surprisingly affecting but still kick-ass hero.
A trip to Grandma’s place has never been as dangerous as it turns out to be for Lucy (Brittany Snow), who’s bringing her new boyfriend to meet the family in her old neighbourhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. The couple is suddenly, violently separated as helicopter-borne, machine-gun-wielding attackers overrun the streets, shooting anyone they see. If you've ever wanted to see how you would fare playing through a slasher scenario rather than watching one, then the horror video game Until Dawn will be right up your alley. If you haven't had a chance to play the 2015 game yet and you have a PlayStation Plus membership, you're in luck, because Until Dawn is coming to the subscription service this July.

"Eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat, and they aren’t alone. Gripped by dread, with tensions running high, they must fight through their fear if they all hope to make through the night in one piece.

On the official PlayStation blog, Nik Bowen, one of the Game Directors at Supermassive Games, shared some insights into what gamers can expect from The Inpatient:
"The Inpatient is a horror game with psychological elements. It places you in the role of a patient with amnesia and is set in the Blackwood Sanatorium, over 60 years prior to the award-winning Until Dawn.
Anyone familiar with Until Dawn will recognize the imposing sanatorium but this time you’ll see everything as it was during its 1950s heyday.

AMC's horror streaming service Shudder has entered the original content game with a series of six planned "Shudder Originals", the first of which is Rodney Ascher's (Room 237) latest, Primal Screen. Primal Screen explores how individuals are simultaneously attracted to and repelled by what scares them most. Like Ascher's last film, The Nightmare, the film is a hybrid of documentary and horror and explores the pop-culture artifacts that traumatized individuals in their youth and the effects it has had on their lives. In addition to Primal Screen, Shudder is developing the following projects: Deadwax - A short form series about the hunt for a mysterious record that drives its owners mad... and kills anyone who dares to play it. From Graham Reznick, co-writer of Until...

Bushwick, an urban invasion thriller directed by Cooties' Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, played tonight at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight Features program. Yesterday, Collider debuted three new teaser posters, running with the colors of American patriotism. You will find them below, each a slight variant from the other apart from the color scheme. Bushwick stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Angelic Zambrana (Precious), and Jeremie Harris ("Legion"). The chilling and poignant tale was written by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick; so long ago they come across as damned prophets now that Bushwick is coming to U.S. cinemas, VOD and Digital HD on August 27th. When Lucy (Brittany Snow) steps off the subway, she walks into an utter bloodbath...

While at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, I had the opportunity to check out a few films that were just a bit outside the horror realm, including Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott’s sociopolitical actioner Bushwick, Marianna Palka’s bleak comedy Bitch, and David Lowery’s unforgettable A Ghost Story, and you can read my reviews for these on-the-fringe-of-horror titles right here in one place.
Bushwick: You couldn’t ask for a bigger departure from Milott and Murnion’s previous film, Cooties, than their most recent effort, Bushwick. Their frantically-paced actioner stars Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow as two residents of the New York borough who must fend off an invasion after several red states decide to declare a new civil war on the rest of the country. By giving us very little information on just what is happening throughout Bushwick, co-writers Nick Damici and Graham Reznick keep viewers firmly...

Rlj Entertainment has purchased the U.S. rights to the action-thriller “Bushwick,” which premiered on January 21 in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. The deal for the film was in the seven figures, according to a statement.
Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, “Bushwick” is also currently being pursued by major studio distributor for a multi-territory distribution deal. The film centers on a woman named Lucy who emerges from a Brooklyn subway to find that her neighborhood is under attack by black-clad military soldiers. An ex-Marine corpsman, Stupe, reluctantly helps her fight for survival through a civil war, as Texas attempts to secede from the United States of America. “Bushwick” stars Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow.
“With a great cast and a very timely story, we feel this is a film that will resonate with audiences all across the country,” Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer of Rlj Entertainment said in a statement.

Sometimes the only possible way to guarantee safety during difficult situations is to ally with the unlikeliest of accomplices. That’s certainly true for Brittany Snow’s character in the upcoming action movie, ‘Bushwick,’ as she’s forced to rely on an ex-Marine corpsman, who’s apprehensive about helping her secure her survival. In conjunction with the recent announcement that the drama will have its World Premiere at next month’s Sundance Film Festival, three new images from the movie have been released. Nick Damici and Graham Reznick co-penned the script for ‘Bushwick,’ which was directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Developers: Supermassive Games and Sony Computer Entertainment. Director: Will Byles. Writers: Graham Reznick, Larry Fessenden, Justin Villiers, Will Byles and Pete Samuels. This writer and gamer is continuing to catch-up on some of the exclusive releases on the PS4. Until Dawn, a horror survival game, was originally released just over a year ago (August 25th, '15). Developed by Supermassive Games and Sony Computer Entertainment, the game plays out much like a horror film as you control up to eight characters. Your decisions decide on whether each character survives. This game also allowed this player to use "motion controls" for the first time. This experience had its highs and lows. As well, the game introduces you to a psychoanalyst. He will question you and out your fears. The more you tell him, the scarier the game becomes. Meanwhile, you will need to search under every rock, to determine what happened to...

Despite my voracious thirst for horror, and Ti West’s reputation for such films, surprisingly, In A Valley Of Violence might just be my favorite effort from the director to date. Actually, no – I do, in fact, Know that In A Valley Of Violence is West’s highest achievement yet, as he channels an old-school western vibe that’s equal parts ruthless violence and gun-slinging comedy (gallows humor at its best). This buddy-cowboy hootenanny shies away from the darkness and embraces a highly entertaining light, even after acknowledging the sobering sadness instilled through one, cruel scene. Think John Wick meets Old West – a double-barreled blast of excitement told with conviction.
Ethan Hawke stars as Paul, a tortured ex-militant who’s running away from his ghastly past. His only friend in the world is a lovable pooch named Abby, and his only goal is to reach Mexico’s border. But when...

Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick wouldn't have been obvious choices to pen the biggest horror game of the year. From its announcement in 2011, "Until Dawn" was pushed as an interactive story, a cinematic choose-your-own-adventure of a bloody and violent variety: play the victims of a horror movie, and do your best to survive the night. It was a game that would live or die on its narrative, so a compelling story was not optional. Entrusting such a vital part of the project to names unfamiliar to many video game players would seem, on first glance, a risky move. But Fessenden and Reznick are hardly unknowns. A staple of the indie horror world as a writer, director, producer, Fessenden is also master of the short-lived cameo. Even if you haven't heard his name, anyone from horror fans to genre dabblers have likely watched him meet a grisly end — there are a...

I’ve been gaming for years, for longer than I have been a horror fan in fact. From the ZX81 through the Acorn Electron, Commodore 64, Nes, Snes, Megadrive and beyond, and even back in the early days there were attempts to meld video games and movies. Be it cinematic style games like It Came From the Desert to the huge push into full motion video games like Mad Dog McCree. There have even been horror video games based on the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, though both of those games never made it to UK shores because, back then, games were for “kids” only.
Of course we’ve had games like the Trilobyte-produced PC games The 7th Guest and 11th Hour, which captured the scares perfectly and then there’s the controversial Night Trap on the Mega CD – a game which was one of...

Sony and Supermassive Games have announced an August 25th release date for the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, third-person interactive horror title "Until Dawn".
Set at an isolated mountain lodge, eight friends try to stay alive with a killer on the loose. Players define the relationships between the characters through dialogue and experience the night from their unique point of view. Branching story lines mean that no two stories will be the same with every decision shaping each player’s unique story.
Famed horror writer/directors Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick wrote the game which utilises a new version of the "Killzone Shadowfall" engine. The DualShock 4 motion sensor functionality will track how still you can be whilst in hiding from the game's fearsome terrors.
The camera will capture player scares as they happen to share with friends. Along with the release date, a new trailer for the game has also gone online:...

Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn hasn’t had the most traditional paths to development. Initially revealed for PlayStation 3 back in August 2012 — a time when the title was built with the Move controller in mind — the studio’s shlock horror experience drew interest and suspicion in equal measure for its eclectic approach to storytelling.
Fast forward to 2014 and now Supermassive’s adventure is barreling down on its release for PlayStation 4, and the company unveiled an all-new look at Until Dawn during Sony’s Psx event.
Placing a heavy emphasis on player choice within its moment-to-moment gameplay, the footage follows Hayden Panettiere’s character, Sam, as she scurries away from the marauding psychopath. Each of these decisions are said to play a part in the final outcome of the narrative, with Supermassive claiming that any of the group can live or die based on your own actions. No pressure, right?
