A documentary on Irish racing driver Tommy Byrne gives an insight into the sport but is strictly for fans
This documentary about the rise and fall of Tommy Byrne, a talented but troubled also-ran on the motor racing circuit, is most interesting for the insight it gives into the ugly, elitist attitudes in Formula One. But unlike Asif Kapadia’s Senna, there’s not much here to recommend the film to non-fans of the sport.

Chances are you won’t have heard of the mercurial Tommy Byrne. Born in the Republic of Ireland in 1958, Tommy Byrne could, and really should, have had a glittering career in Formula One. Tommy was brash, he was cocky, he liked a drink, he liked the girls, and he ruffled feathers in the establishment, but there was no denying his incredible talent. Maybe Tommy was destined to be a racing driver – after all, he was born in the back of a car speeding its way to the hospital. Crash and Burn is a film about Tommy’s life and career....read more...

Tommy Byrne was compared to Senna before his hot temper landed him in trouble. This fascinating film does justice to the legend that nearly was
There’s a fascination and poignancy to this gripping sports documentary, about someone who deserves a kind of legendary status for the way he didn’t become a legend. This is motor racing’s bad boy Tommy Byrne, who rose from humble beginnings in Dundalk in Ireland to be one of the hottest prospects of early 1980s Formula One, mentioned in the same breath as Ayrton Senna. An interviewee says he could have been the George Best or Alex Higgins of the racing world, but somehow Byrne only did the Best downfall without the preceding success.
The film shows he was a brilliant, instinctive, aggressive driver who terrified everyone on the youth circuits (“I learned my craft by crashing”) but also cocky, mouthy and out...

Recently, I had a very indepth and fascinating chat with Tom Byrne from Sony Pictures Ireland about The Industry Trust and movie experiences worth paying for, on the radio show. Tom had plenty to say about piracy, ultraviolet lockers and how much piracy has impacted the industry in Ireland, let alone anywhere else as well as plenty more. I felt he was quite upfront and honest about what he had to say and certainly backed up his points. London, Nov 11: A retired priest reportedly bit off a clergyman's ear in a brawl over a parking spot in Perth, Australia.
According to police, Father Thomas Byrne, 80, told Father Thomas Smith, 81, to pick the flesh up off the ground and put it in his pocket after the fight, the Daily Mail reported.
It was only when Smith returned to his retirement flat and pulled it out of his pocket that he realized that it was his right ear.
Smith wrapped it in a tea towel and drove to a local medical centre, where staff called for an ambulance and police.
It appeared that Byrne had also suffered a bruising in the fight, as he appeared.

You know what they say: After the party comes the afterparty. And at this Sunday's SAG Awards, the attendees will not be disappointed.
People magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation are joining forces once again to celebrate the efforts of charitable actors and this year's outstanding performances in film and TV. And to get this party started, they have transformed the back lot of the Shrine Auditorium into a chic Hollywood lounge for everyone, not just the celebs.
Does that mean we can go? Probably not. By "everyone" we mean everyone who attended the show, but it would be nice!
After the show, partygoers are greeted at the door with a cocktail provided by Grey Goose Vodka, followed by a delicious food menu from food guru Tom Byrne of La Cuisine. The meal selection includes all kinds of comfort food, such as lobster, quesadillas, mac-and-cheese and shrimp tartlets.
