Over the past weekend (or Halloweekend, as many horror fans lovingly refer to as that final Friday through Sunday of October), over 110,000 fans descended upon the Nos Events Center in San Bernardino to celebrate the electronic music scene and everything we love about Halloween.
During the festival, Escape’s stages hosted over 60 live acts performing for thousands of attendees on four stages, including the likes of Kaskade, Benny Benassi, Tiesto, The Chainsmokers, Duke Dumont, Joyride, Tchami, Firebeatz, Yellow Claw, and Claude VonStroke (who opened with a killer mix of John Carpenter’s Halloween theme—the perfect way to celebrate the season).
The entire Nos Events Center grounds were decked out to the nines for Halloween, complete with a circus midway that brought a small-town feeling into the center of the sprawling festival, featuring a tented area where oddities and other entertainers performed throughout both evenings, with Psycho Circus actors posing for pictures with fans.

Friday was a day to remember for Brian Smith and Alexis Adams, two high school seniors with autism. Saw writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan have been hired to write the feature film adaptation of the comic book, The Stuff of Legend. They wrote seven of the eight Saw movies that were made. Pete Candeland will director the film, which is planned to blend both live action and CGI.
The comic was created by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith and illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III. Here's the official description of the project, and it sounds like it will make for a great movie!
The year is 1944. An allied force advances along a war-torn beach in a strange land, outnumbered and far from home. Together, they fight the greatest evil they have ever known. Never ending waves of exotic enemies come crashing down on them, but they will not rest. Thousands of miles away, the world is on the brink of destruction. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the duo behind the “Feast” franchise, before parlaying that success into installments of the “Saw” franchise, then launching their own “The Collector” franchise, will now be putting all that dark, horror stuff behind them to work on Disney’s “The Stuff of Legend”. Well, sort of. The writing duo have just been tapped by Disney to do a draft on “The Stuff of Legend”, based on the comic book of the same name by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith (and drawn by Charles Paul Wilson III), about “a band of toys that journeys into a dark realm to rescue their owner from the infamous Boogeyman.” Shawn Christensen wrote the previous draft. My guess is, the studio finally got around to watching Christensen’s “Abduction”, and realized it’s probably a good idea to get someone else in there. Besides “Feast”, “Saw”, and “The Collector”, Melton...

ABC Family is ready to get into the reality-show game. On Wednesday (Feb. 13), network president Michael Riley announced the pick-up of two new reality series, "Dancing Fools" and "The Vineyard." Both series will go into production this spring and will air during the summer of 2013.
"Dancing Fools," hosted by Melissa Peterman ("Baby Daddy," "Bet on Your Baby"), is a half-hour, unscripted comedy. ABC Family didn't announce any other details, but we can guess that this probably involves a dance competition of some sort.
Phil Gurin ("The Singing Bee," "Oh Sit") created and will executive-produce the show.
"The Vineyard" is described as a "dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap." The program will follow a group of 20-somethings working on Martha's Vineyard for the summer. Mischief and romance are expected when the group shares a house and the youths work and play together. It might be something like "Jersey Shore" in this way, only colder and less orange.

ABC Family has ordered two reality series: Dancing Fools, which will be hosted by Melissa Peterman, star of the network’s hit comedy series Baby Daddy, and docu-soap The Vineyard (working title). Production on both series will begin this spring. ABC Family’s most recent unscripted effort, series Beverly Hills Nannies, aired last summer. It did not go to a second season. Dancing Fools is a half-hour unscripted comedy created and executive produced by Phil Gurin (The Singing Bee, Oh Sit) and produced by the Gurin Co. ABC Family is keeping details about the premise under wraps, but judging by Gurin’s track record of turning karaoke and musical chairs into reality series, this may again be a take on a party game. In addition to Dancing Fools, Peterman also is hosting the upcoming ABC reality series Bet On Your Baby. The Vineyard is a dramatic coming-of-age docu-soap, which follows...

I don't know how many people really saw this coming, but in a way, it makes a lot of sense. Although it initially seemed like a bit of a long shot, after picking up a slew of awards over the past month, Argo has very quickly overtaken Steven Spielberg's Lincoln as the film to beat at this year's Academy Awards. The movie won Best Drama at the Golden Globes and then went on to pick up top prizes from the Screen Actors Guild, Producers Guild and now the Directors Guild. Under normal circumstances, Ben Affleck's DGA win would make him a shoo-in to take Best Director at the Oscars, if only for one thing: he wasn't even nominated. Still, he's not letting that little oversight spoil his mood. Here's what he had to say during his DGA acceptance speech yesterday: "The four folks here who are nominated I consider my betters.

The Directors Guild Awards has been an extremely reliable predictor of the Oscar winner for best director over the years. It won't be this year, though.
Ben Affleck, who isn't nominated for a directing Oscar for "Argo," won the DGA Award for feature films Saturday night (Feb. 2). He beat out fellow nominees Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables"), Ang Lee ("Life of Pi") and Steven Spielberg ("Lincoln").
Affleck's Oscar snub is looking ever more curious as he's now won the DGA Award, a Golden Globe and a Critics' Choice Award for his direction of "Argo."

Los Angeles — Ben Affleck has won the top film honor from the Directors Guild of America for his CIA thriller "Argo," further sealing its status as best-picture front-runner at the Academy Awards.
Saturday's prize also normally would make Affleck a near shoo-in to win best-director at the Feb. 24 Oscars, since the Directors Guild recipient nearly always goes on to claim the same prize at Hollywood's biggest night.
But Affleck surprisingly missed out on an Oscar directing nomination, along with several other key favorites, including fellow Directors Guild contenders Kathryn Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty" and Tom Hooper for "Les Miserables."
Affleck's Oscar snub has not hurt "Argo" and may even have earned it some favor among awards voters as an underdog favorite. "Argo" has dominated other awards since the Oscar nominations.

Coming across like a mash up of Toy Story and The Chronicles of Narnia, The Stuff Of Legend is a comic book mini series written by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith, with art by Charles Paul Wilson III. Set in 1944, it see's a young abducted by the Boogeyman and brought to a realm called The Dark, which resides in the boy's closet. A small group of the boy's toys, led by a toy soldier and a teddy bear, enter The Dark on a rescue mission, becoming real life version of themselves and coming into conflict with The Boogeyman's similarly changed army, comprised of toys stored in the closet. Pete Candeland, co-director on Gorillaz music videos such as 'Clint Eastwood' and '19-2000', has signed onto direct a script by Shawn Christensen (Abduction). The plan is to make a live-action film set in a CGI world, similar to Alice In Wonderland.

Once in the closet, each of those toys become menacingly large and agile creatures who engage in a war with the Boogeyman’s forces. Those armies are comprised of the...

It’s a little hard to read the logline for Disney’s latest venture, a live-action/CGI adaptation of the comic book “The Stuff of Legend” without immediately thinking “Toy Story”. A darker, grittier, more violent version of “Toy Story”, anyway. But, you know, live action-ish. Based on the comic book of the same name by Mike Raicht and Brian Smith (with art by Charles Paul Wilson III), “The Stuff of Legend” has been snatched up by Disney as a directing gig for commercial director Pete Candeland. So what’s it all about? A young boy in 1944 is abducted by the Boogeyman, dragged by the ankles into the closet realm known as The Dark. The boy’s puppy rallies his toys to follow his master in a rescue mission. Once in the closet, each of those toys become menacingly large and agile creatures who engage in a war with the Boogeyman’s forces.

Exclusive: Disney has just made a pre-emptive pitch deal for Stuff Of Legend, with Pete Candeland attached to direct and Abduction‘s Shawn Christensen writing the script. It’s the second recent Disney deal for Candeland, an accomplished commercials and video director best known for his work with animation and for creating and directing the music videos for The Gorillaz and for working with Paul McCartney to create a cinematic opening to The Beatles Rock Band for Harmonix. Candeland recently made a deal to turn the Disney theme-park ride Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride into a live-action feature. Stuff Of Legend, a graphic novel written by Mike Raicht & Brian Smith and illustrated by Charles Paul Wilson III, has a bit of Toy Story and The Chronicles Of Narnia in it. A young boy in 1944 is abducted by the Boogeyman, dragged by the ankles into the closet realm known as The Dark.

One of the things we pride ourselves on here at Dread Central is that many of our staff members have spread their wings and tried their hands at other things besides giving you the best news and review coverage we can. That being said, it's with great pleasure that we debut the first (and supposedly only) directorial effort from our own Heather Wixson, her short film Paper Rock, Scissors.
Starring Aaron Pruner ("Vr Troopers") and Corbett Tuck (Insidious), Paper Rock, Scissors was directed by Wixson and written by Bryan Ryan (The Guest, Tresspasser). The short film was shot and edited by Brian Smith with original music by Dwayne Cathey and special make-up effects by Kelsey Boutte.
"I'm incredibly proud of everyone's work on Paper Rock, Scissors, and I can't think of a better short film debut for me than this," said Wixson. "Growing up, I had two loves - horror...

With the Rfu in turmoil, the future of Martin Johnson seems to rest on the flipping of a coin, and more importantly who is doing the flipping.

This writer and Dread Central's The Horror Starlets took part this past Sunday, October 23rd, in the seventh annual non-profit Bowling for Boobies Los Angeles breast cancer charity event, and we wish to thank those in the horror community and beyond who so generously donated to this wonderful cause. We couldn’t do it every year without you!
Culminating at Jillian’s Hi-Life at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles, California, with a pink carpet, a night of bowling, and the paparazzi snapping away (see our photo gallery by Geza Decsy below), the charity - run by founder Stephanie Lahart of the Busted Foundation - raised over $100,000 with our team (who received an award this year for ‘Biggest Balls’ for ‘Most Money Raised the Fastest’) contributing nearly $14K of that total. As they do each year, the proceeds will directly benefit local Los Angeles women battling breast cancer.

Twins, again? By the second time T.R. Knight's rape suspect, Gabriel Thomas, declared his innocence in "Double Strands," I was ready for Amaro to figure out that Thomas must have a twin. Granted the title of tonight's episode did sort of spoil the surprise of the detective's big discovery, but it's not like we haven't seen this before.
As I mentioned last week, with such a long run on television, it can be hard to keep the storylines fresh. This episode really reminded me of the season 6 episode "Identity." Luke and Logan (formerly Lindsay) Stanton perform the perfect murder through a clever use of a movie-theater alibi and twin DNA. But now in season 13, the "evil" twin, Brian Smith (also played by Knight of course), uses their identical DNA to set up his brother.
His deception is pretty clever, and extensive, as it involves following his brother on all...

The Stuff of Legend will return for a third volume from Th3rd World Studios. The New York Times bestselling comic from the small independent publisher became a surprise hit following its debut on Free Comic Book Day in 2009. Co-written by Brian Smith and Mike Raicht, the third volume 'A Jester's Tale' continues the adventures of the World War II-era toys that strike out into the wild to rescue their young owner from the Boogeyman. "A Jester's Tale" will focus a lot on Jester and a quest he feels compelled to go on," Raicht told Newsarama. "I don't want to give too much away yet, but if you know Jester, he is always a character who follows his heart and that is (more)...

Dread Central readers, it’s hard to put into words just how amazing and inspiring it has been for this writer to be on hand for the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, over the last several days. It’s been exhausting, challenging, and ultimately one of the best experiences I’ve ever had as a reporter.
So, while I’m busy putting together an insane amount of video coverage from SXSW with our video producer, Brian Smith, we thought we’d give you a look at something cool Dread Central was able to be a part of at the fest.
This past Saturday, March 12, DC Business Manager and Co-Founder Kw Low hosted the panel "Zombies Must Eat: How Genre Communities Make Money" alongside Skot Leach, Co-Founder of LostZombies.com, and yours truly, who was filling in for a very ill Drew Daywalt (who we’re happy to report is feeling much better now!

Dread Central has dubbed March, 2011 "Indie Horror Month", and one such filmmaker that we've been keeping an eye on is Bryan Ryan. No doubt you will be, too, after checking out his short film "The Guest", which has debuted online and we, of course, have right here!
"The Guest" was an official selection at several festivals last year, was shot by the amazing Will Barratt (Hatchet 1&2, Frozen), and features the talented Alyshia Ochse and Robert Seay. The film's co-stars include Andre Bolourchi, Brandi Price, Jessica Whitaker, and Suzanne Quast. The producers are Mel House, Bryan Ryan, Robert Victor Galluzzo, Courtney Daniels, Katie Floyd, and Heather Wixson with editing duties handled by Brian Smith.
Synopsis:
A lonely woman and a mysterious intruder get more than they bargained for when a quiet evening proves to be deadlier than either of them could have imagined.

While we love covering horror movies of all shapes and sizes, the staff at Dread Central has always fostered a deep-rooted appreciation for the independent horror movement that has been alive and kicking for over 90 years now.
In recognition of that desire for making great genre films against the odds, yours truly (Dread Central’s own Heather Wixson, aka “The Horror Chick”) is taking the entire month of March to celebrate the movies that often challenged the system, sometimes broke the rules, and came with great professional risk for everyone involved but persevered and went on to capture our respect and admiration through the ages.
Starting March 1st, check back with DC every day for our extensive coverage of all things related to indie horror, including a look back at the milestones through the ages, interviews with some of independent horror’s veterans as well as some up-and-coming filmmakers, and so much more!

It’s no secret I love action flicks and any project featuring Jason Statham is like catnip for me, which is why I loved the balls-out Paul W.S. Anderson remake Death Race when it hit theaters in 2008. And even though many love to hate on it because it was a remake of a cult classic, there's no denying that there was something pretty badass about Statham’s character, Frankenstein.
Universal Pictures must have agreed as they put together one of the best direct-to-dvd action films I’ve ever experienced with Death Race 2, which hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves this week. Directed by Roel Reiné, Death Race 2 stars Luke Goss (Hellboy 2), Danny Trejo (Machete), Ving Rhames (Dawn of the Dead remake), Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings), Tanit Phoenix (Lost Boys: The Thirst), and Robin Shou (Mortal Kombat).
