Exclusive: UK industry veterans Richard Kondal and Patrick Fischer, founders of financier Creativity Capital, have formed a new co-production company dubbed Big Safari.
The banner marks the latest edition to the duo’s portfolio, which also includes shareholdings in sales agent Architect, VFX house Koala FX as well as Creativity Capital.
Big Safari was born off the back of the Simon West-directed 2022 television series Boundless, which Kondal and Fischer produced while at Fulwell 73 with Mono Films and Amazon. The strategy for the new outfit, said the duo, is to set up co-productions that help close finance for international producers, whether through accessing soft money in European co-productions as they did for Svalta or finding a cost-effective co-producer further afield like they did with UK-Philippines co-production The Bayou. It will also look to help European films access UK talent and locations.

Everything about The Twin‘s premise teases more of the same. Director and co-writer Taneli Mustonen (Lake Bodom) aims to subvert that formula by infusing it with folk horror and a few narrative sharp turns. But it’s so fixated on […]

Finland has responded to a spike in demand for its content with a slew of new series. As revealed by Laura Kuulasmaa, executive director at Audiovisual Producers Finland (Apfi), over 30 will be released this year alone, a 20% uptick on 2018.
“Compared to eight, ten years ago, when there were maybe only five scripted series per year, the increase has been huge,” she tells Variety ahead of French TV festival Series Mania’s “Focus on Finland” showcase.
The Film in Finland cash rebate has facilitated international investments and growth of the budgets, she notes.
Matti Paunio, head of production at the Finnish Film Foundation, adds:
“I think the biggest trend overall is the diversification of subjects and points of view. Scripts and series are more courageous, they take on different genres more often than ever. Production is booming, but apart from the quantity, we are also providing quality.”

As the end of the first decade of the Finnish Film Affair nears, the industry event’s director, Maria Pirkkalainen, who also heads Nordic Flair, notes its phenomenal growth, with more than 200 Finnish film projects showcased, more than 500 international guests brought to Helsinki, and the establishment of a major platform and networking forum for locals.

AMC’s Shudder took rights to the film in North America, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and Nordisk took Scandinavian rights ahead of the market.

Taneli Mustonen’s much-anticipated horror and Tania Moilanen’s documentary The Mission were crowned the winners at Finland’s biggest film-industry event. The industry sidebar of the Helsinki Film Festival Love & Anarchy, the Finnish Film Affair, showcased nearly 50 Finnish films during its hybrid ninth edition – as well as the Nordic titles Superposition, Knocking, Quake and Ninjababy, for the first time in the event’s history. As stated by the organisers, the event welcomed nearly 400 film-industry professionals from 27 different countries, this time tuning in online due to the pandemic. The Twin, produced by Don Films and pitched by Taneli Mustonen and his producer and co-writer Aleksi Hyvärinen, was given the Best Fiction Award. “This elevated horror piece also speaks to a bigger thematic with its exploration of grief, giving a unique twist to the genre,” observed jurors Sarah Lutton, Sophie Green and Cineuropa’s own Vassilis Economou. “The Twin is a.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month we’re talking to Nolan McBride, founder of the Dead Ringers podcast. On Dead Ringers, McBride brings together a panel of co-hosts to dissect “horror movie double features that share similar DNA, yet still have distinct personalities.” Past pairings have included May/Eyes Without a Face, Starry Eyes/The Neon Demon, Halloween/The Terminator, and other films that have some similar narrative elements, but take very different approaches to their respective material (they had a particularly charismatic guest for an episode that covered Bug/A Dark Song).
For our discussion, McBride nominated Taneli Mustonen’s 2016 slasher movie Lake Bodom. The film follows four teens as they return to the site of the real-life 1960 Lake Bodom murders, where a group of campers were brutally attacked, leaving only one survivor. Of all the many sub-genres in horror, the slasher is probably my favorite. There aren’t many good ones, but even the bad ones tend to deliver exactly what we want from the formula. They’re horror movie comfort food, and Shudder is offering an entire buffet this October.
Black Christmas (1973, dir. Bob Clark) In many ways the first modern slasher film, Bob Clark’s holiday horror movie is, to this day, a genre masterpiece. From its chilly Canadian atmosphere to the disturbing obscene phone calls being made to a sorority house, Black Christmas is brilliantly constructed and hugely influential. It’s not just one of my favorite slasher movies, but one of my favorite horror movies of any type, full stop.
Blood Rage (1987, dir. Bruce Rubin) There are slasher movies that are tense and scary and stylish. Blood Rage is not one of them. Shot in 1983 but not released...

Someone seeks to reheat a killer cold case in Lake Bodom, a new Finnish horror film that's now streaming on Shudder following a well-received tour on the festival circuit.
"Lake Bodom- a Finnish modern twist on old school slashers- is now streaming exclusively on Shudder!
About Lake Bodom: Every camper’s worst nightmare came true at Lake Bodom in 1960 when four teenagers were stabbed to death while sleeping in their tent. As the years passed and the case grew cold, the unsolved mystery turned into an urban legend, a creepy campfire story passed from generation to generation. Now, a group of teenagers arrives at the same campsite, hoping to solve the murder by reconstructing it minute by minute. As night falls, turns out not all of them are there to play."
Directed by Taneli Mustonen, Lake Bodom stars Nelly Hirst-Gee, Mimosa Willamo, Mikael Gabriel, and Santeri Mäntylä Helinheimo.

Tagline: "No Happy Campers Here..." Director: Taneli Mustonen. Writers: Aleksi Hyvärinen and Taneli Mustonen. Cast: Mimosa Willamo, Nelly Hirst-Gee, Mikael Gabriel and Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä. Before Lake Bodom, there has only been one Finnish slasher film ever made. And, outside of 2008's Dark Floors and Tero Molin's Skeleton Crew (2009), there have only been a half dozen Finnish horror films ever created. Now, Lake Bodom can be added to both of these short lists! In the film, an ancient murder is revisited, in which three campers were killed and one person survived. Hmm, this critic has an idea as to who the killer was. But, director Taneli Mustonen and writer Aleksi Hyvärinen have their own ideas as to the killer's identity. And, there are a few twists and turns, to experience, before finding out who that is. Reminiscent of another film, Awakening the Zodiac, a killer is brought back to life,...

Going on a remote and bucolic holiday can be a risky business if you’re a movie teen feeling the first throws of love and, let’s be honest here, just plain thirsty. Sooner or later, that young and supple flesh will attract the unwanted attention of a hulking masked serial killer, and sure as eggs are eggs, by hook or machete, adolescent blood will be spilt by the gallon. Until one blue-eyed, blonde and always celibate girl is left standing, half-naked and traumatised. It is a gory and titillating premise hacked into the teen slasher genre, which had its heyday in American cinema in the early 1970s with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, ending in the mid-1980s with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. They, and imitators alike grossed billions and billions of dollars at the box office.

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”

This year’s South by Southwest lineup was surprisingly vacant of scare-focused horror – Midnighters selection included – but Lake Bodom lessened the sting of such programming. Taneli Mustonen’s Finnish thriller is an old-school slasher turned upside-down, happily defying perceptions that drive generic genre constructs. It’s based on an actual 1960s cold-case, where four campers were carved up in their tent (three died, one lived) – yet this is no retelling. Mustonen and co-writer Aleksi Hyvärinen adopt one of many floated media theories as fact, and mold a hellish camping trip around the discussed hypothesis. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not. That doesn’t make Lake Bodom any less interesting.
It all starts as many teenage slashers do. Two boys – Elias (Mikael Gabriel) and Atte (Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä) – and two attractive females – Nora (Mimosa Willamo) and Ida (Nelly Hirst-Gee) – head off on a weekend getaway. The girls think they...
