With John Travolta, Gregory Nava and a host of other luminaries lighting it up, the 12th Panama International Film Festival wrapped Sunday on a high note, with general attendance exceeding expectations.
Speaking at the closing ceremony held at the Canal Museum, Pituka Ortega-Heilbron, Iff Panama Board President, hailed this latest edition as a vibrant rebirth for the festival.
“We were hit by the phenomenon of the pandemic, and we certainly don’t want to complain or victimize ourselves because to fight is synonymous with living, but this festival has fought tirelessly for the last four years to thrive.”
“There’s still much ground to cover. We must work together – government, community groups, and businesses – to understand how important cultural and creative industries are for our country’s economy and society to grow,” declared Culture Minister Giselle González Villarué, who later told Variety that a delayed feasibility study that would explore...

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas is the latest star to receive a coveted honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Lucas will be feted with the honor during the festival’s closing ceremony May 25, as announced by the festival. While the closing night feature has yet to be announced, the 2024 festival opens with Quentin Dupieux’s comedy “Le Deuxième Acte” (“The Second Act”) on May 14. Greta Gerwig oversees the jury board.
Lucas’ first feature “Thx-1138” debuted at Cannes in the Directors’ Fortnight program in 1971. The sci-fi film was co-written and directed by Lucas, with Francis Ford Coppola producing. Robert Duvall starred in the film about a dystopian future where people are monitored by android police officers and are force-fed drugs to negate emotions.

Running April 4-7, the Iff Panama brings to this year’s edition a rich mix of standout director driven titles from Europe, the Spanish-speaking world and beyond, spangled by highlights from Central America, including Panama:
“Bila Burba,” (Duiren Wagua, Panama)
Documentary. Wagua’s debut feature. The Gunadule nation’s ties with the Panamanian government were fraught with territorial and cultural disputes. In 1925, leaders Simral Colman and Nele Kantule, inspired by their warrior ancestors, joined forces to unite their communities in the ‘Dule Revolution’ against police brutality. Today, their descendants honor this legacy through street theater, transforming community streets into stages to commemorate their ancestors’ struggle.
Bila Burba
“Brown,” (Ricardo Aguilar, Panama)
Penned by Aguilar’s regular collaborator, Manolito Rodríguez, the story centers on Teófilo Alfonso, also known as “Panamá Al” Brown, the first Latin American World Boxing Champion. After a fixed fight costs him his title, he retires to Paris.

Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain has to chase directors for movie roles - because they fear they won't be able to "afford" her.The 46-year-old actress won an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for 2021's 'The Eyes of Tammy Faye' and has starred in blockbusters including 'The Help', 'Zero Dark Thirty', 'Interstellar', 'The Martian' and 'Molly's Game'.However, that doesn't mean she is inundated with work offers - quite the opposite. She told Radio Times magazine: "I think that you reach a level of success where the very interesting filmmakers stop calling. Because they are like, 'I'm going to wait for ever for an answer. They're going to string me along, they'll sign up, and then they'll ditch it at the last minute for something else that makes them more money.' So the weird thing is that now it's more me seeking them out.

All of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
There are many films about the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis, but very few that grapple with the loneliness of those left behind or came of age as it began to make headlines. Through supernatural metaphor, Andrew Haigh’s latest––and best––film tackles the existential displacement of a gay man (Andrew Scott) fast approaching middle age, his isolation only underlined by the near-abandoned tower block in which he lives. His friends have long moved out of the city, he has to maneuver a generational divide with a new, younger romantic partner (Paul Mescal) whose adolescence was far different to his, and he feels a longing to return to his childhood and come out to...

Plot: After attending a high school reunion, a woman (Jessica Chastain) is followed home by a man (Peter Sarsgaard) with whom she has a history. Initially upset and thinking he’s a stalker, she learns that he has dementia and that if they have a history together, he can’t remember it.
Review: Michel Franco is a director whose work has grown steadily in stature over the last few years. I became aware of him after watching his class warfare drama New Order in 2020 and then his dark 2021 Tim Roth drama, Sundown. Both of those films were grim, and one might assume Memory, which deals with early onset dementia, sexual assault, and alcoholism, might be the same. While heavy, Franco’s made a profoundly empathetic and unlikely love story brilliantly acted by stars Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard.

The prospect of working with Jessica Chastain under the direction of Michel Franco was enough to pique Peter Sarsgaard’s interest in Memory, but what really sealed the deal was how Franco had written his character, Saul. Since Franco rarely defines the character on the page, Sarsgaard was given the freedom to create a personal portrait of a man just beginning to struggle with a debilitating illness. Here, he explains how was influenced by a family member with early onset dementia, and why he chose to focus on the joy and humor in the character’s life, rather than the disease.
Deadline: How did you get involved with making Memory?
Peter Sarsgaard: The usual way. My agents called me and said that there was this project they thought I’d be interested in, which is how they preface anything that they think I should do. I heard who was...

Memory, the latest film by Mexican writer/director Michel Franco, is a performance- and character-driven relationship drama that also doubles as a family drama, with hints of the melodrama and thriller genres. Sylvia (Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain), a 40-something care worker and recovering substance abuser, and Saul, a middle-aged man suffering from early onset dementia, meet under the most inauspicious and inappropriate of circumstances: He follows her home after making eye contact with her at a school reunion. She, in turn, rejects his advances and leaves the unwanted visitor outside her door to fend for himself. He doesn’t. She finds him the next morning outside her doorstep, still waiting...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
In all honesty, the films of 2023 should take a backseat to the images we are seeing every day in Gaza, where journalists and average citizens have been recording and documenting a daily assault on their homes and livelihoods by the Idf. Whatever fakery we watched and enjoyed in the cinema this year should always be kept in perspective in importance with images that are real and actually happening right now. The Palestinians who have documented these important images have been targeted and killed with intent and purpose to silence what their photos and videos are showing and saying.
List of journalists who have been killed.

Fans of Jessica Chastain and Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” are in for another disappointment: The Oscar winner confirmed there is “zero possibility” she will star in the film adaptation.
Netflix first announced a feature film version of the 2017 novel — about a fictional Old Hollywood movie star who gives her final interview — back in 2022. Writer Liz Tigelaar (who’s worked on “Brothers & Sisters” and created the CW series “Life Unexpected”) was attached to pen the script, with Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll” co-creator and “The Acoylte” showrunner) attached to direct.
“I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain told E! News in a recent interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”

Ketchup Entertainment opens Memory on solid $36,500 from three theatres; two top 10 arrivals from India.
December 25 Update: Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom opened top of the North American charts on a lacklustre confirmed $27.7m over the three-day Christmas weekend and a projected $40m over four days, adding further fuel to the superhero fatigue theory as audiences overall seemed more interested in gift shopping than going to the cinema.
Elsewhere there were two top 10 debuts by films from India as well as A24’s The Iron Claw, and Ketchup Entertainment opened Michel Franco’s Memory in limited release to solid numbers.

Two Indian films Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire and Dunki buoyed the North American box office on a relatively quiet holiday weekend as Searchlight Pictures’ All Of Us Strangers had a solid per-screen openings and Poor Things a nice expansion.
From Tollywood to Bollywood, this was a one-two-punch illustrating the key role of Indian films at the U.S. box office, especially this weekend as Christmas shopping and Christmas Eve slowed theater traffic.
Telugu film Salaar Part 1 – Ceasefire opened at $5.48 million on 802 screens to a no. 5 spot in North America. Distributed in the U.S. by Moksha Movies and Pathyangira Cinemas. The action pic directed by Prashanth Neel stars Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu.
And Dunki from Yas Raj Films, starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Raju Hirani, grossed an estimated $3.59 million on 686 screens for the no. ten spot. The estimate through Sunday is $4.8 million.

‘Twas the weekend before Christmas, and not much at the box office was stirring.
The addition of three new wide openings on December 25, plus the usual surge that starts on the holiday and lasts through January 1, will decidedly improve things. But at this point, this season looks to be disappointing.
Compared to that, the specialized world, with the strongest lineup of December releases in recent memory, continues to show promise. Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight) is the most recent title to have a strong platform debut.
The lead up included four new wide studio titles, led by DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (WB) at $28 million for three days. With Monday projected at $12 million, that gets to $40 million. Disney’s “The Marvels” opened to $46 million its first three days, ending at less than $90 million domestic. “Aquaman” will do better, but, similarly, these results spell trouble for its fantasy universe.

Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire saw $2.5 million in Thursday previews as the Telugu action thriller opens in about 800 locations in North America. Bollywood superstar Shah Ruhk Kan toplines drama Dunki, his third film of the year after Pathaan and Jawan, both in the top ten of India’s highest-grossing films.
Presented by Moksha Movies/Pathyangira Cinemas, Salaar directed by Prashanth Neel, stars Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the story of a gang leader who makes a promise to a dying friend.
Indian films are a mainstay at the specialty box office, some weekends more than others. This is a big one. Key indie openings include Searchlight Pictures’ much-nominated All Of Us Strangers by Andrew Haigh; Michel Franco’s Memory from Ketchup Entertainment; Freud’s Last Session from Sony Pictures Classics’ and Music Box Pictures’ The Crime Is Mine, all in limited release.

In nearly all of his eight narrative features, Mexican director Michel Franco has worn his appetite for the most distressed and tormented of human dramas on his sleeve. His characters have vascillated between acts of abject cruelty and silent, practically stoic indifference to their own behaviors, as well as the rueful consequences of their often misguided choices. With each new entry in Franco’s body of work, his approach displays a deft hand for framing and a keen eye for the subtleties of the human condition. Remembrance of Things Past: Franco Bargains for Benevolence in Purgative Love Story
“Memory is something so complex that no list of all its attributes could define the totality of the impressions through which it affects us,” asserted Andrei Tarkovsky, concluding it is a ‘spiritual concept.’ Such are the subtle underpinnings of the aptly titled Memory, the latest from perennial provocateur Michel Franco. Michel Franco’s particular brand of austere fatalism often hinges on the abrupt punishment of his characters. The Mexican shock auteur’s latest, Memory, certainly begins as if it’s setting audiences up for a similar sucker punch. Sitting sullenly by her lonesome at her high school reunion, Sylvia (Jessica Chastain), a social worker and single mother, is approached by Saul (Peter Sarsgaard), who had been eyeing her intently from across the room. At this, Sylvia hastily gets up and leaves, only for Saul to follow her all the way to her home. It’s a journey that Franco’s camera tracks in an unsettlingly placid manner. With little-to-no knowledge of who these two people are, we await the worst to happen.
When Sylvia wakes up the next morning to find Saul outside her Sunset Park apartment in a confused haze after sleeping on the rain-soaked sidewalk, Memory begins to...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Michel Franco’s Memory, the thoughtful drama that won Peter Sarsgaard the Best Actor Volpi Cup in Venice earlier this year. Franco directs and wrote the movie that also stars Jessica Chastain.

This is blown open when Saul (Sarsgaard), who suffers from bouts of dementia, follows her home from their high school reunion. In Venice, Franco told the press corps, “My biggest fear is losing my mind, which is what brought me to (the subject of) dementia. If you don’t know who you are, are you still yourself? It triggers many questions for a scriptwriter.”

It’s the final month of the year, which means much of our attention will be turned to sharing various best-of-2023 rundowns throughout December. The month also brings many of the year’s most noteworthy films, which we’ve rounded up before––some of which will be opening in a more limited capacity and expanding next month.
We should also note some top November picks like The Boy and the Heron and May December are finally getting in front of wider audiences, with the former getting a wide release on December 8 and the latter arriving on Netflix this Friday. For this round-up we’re also not including films getting limited one-week-only runs this month, such as Noora Niasari’s Shayda on December 1 and Ava DuVernay’s Origin and Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera on December 8.

Jessica Chastain doesn’t want to be constrained.
“I’m quite rebellious,” she says from the Marrakech Film Festival, where the star is serving as jury president. “[Whenever] the industry and the world starts seeing me as one kind of actress, I will push against it. [I need] to show that no one’s in charge of me except for me.”
And so, once 2011’s one-two-three punch of Jeff Nichols’ “Take Shelter,” Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” and Tate Taylor’s “The Help” launched the actress into sudden, megawatt stardom – shining on her a glow of festival and auterist prestige, with an Oscar nomination to boot – Chastain immediately signed on to Andy Muschietti’s “Mama,” a horror gem that was never destined for the festival and awards circuit.

As the year comes to a close, studios are getting into the mix, still releasing some last-minute titles into the fray (see Michel Franco’s “Memory” with Jessica Chastain). Another late entry in the 2023 films sweepstakes is “The End From Where We Start,” a new ecological disaster drama starring Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”) and the directorial debut from director Mahalia Belo, a BAFTA TV Award winner for the 2017 TV film, “Ellen” and a 2019 BAFTA TV Award nominee for 2019’s mini-series “The Long Song.”

The independent drama Memory – starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Saarsgard – has been making waves on the festival circuit. Catch your first look here.
Memory, Jessica Chastain’s new drama, sees her play a social worker living a simple life. That is until she’s followed home from a high school reunion by an old classmate.
The movie received an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA so that its stars could promote it at Toronto International Film Festival where the film picked up something of a buzz. Also, Chastain and director Michel Franco have apparently worked together again on Dreams – the filming on which is reportedly already complete.
Just to be clear, this isn’t the film called Memory where Liam Neeson hits people and breaks a toilet. (We don’t want you to be disappointed.) You can find that trailer here. Memory will be Franco’s second English language film after 2015’s Chronic,...

Ketchup Entertainment has released the first trailer for Michel Franco’s Memory, a gut-wrenching drama starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard. If you’ve dealt with dementia in your own family, it certainly hits home.
Jessica Chastain stars as Sylvia, a social worker whose simple and structured life is “blown open when Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door to the past.” Although the trailer for Memory is rather heavy at times, dealing with early-onset dementia, sexual assault, and alcoholism, it has all the makings of an excellent drama, with brilliant performances by the two leads.

Jessica Chastain is a caretaker with demons in Michel Franco’s “Memory,” the most touching and sensitive film in the career of the director of apocalyptic nightmares like “New Order” and the school bullying revenge drama “After Lucia.”
Chastain stars as Sylvia, a decade-sober alcoholic and social worker now taking care of Saul, a former high-school classmate played by Peter Sarsgaard, under strange circumstances. Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup (the equivalent of Best Actor) at the Venice Film Festival for his performance as a man rattled by dementia, who follows Sylvia home from a class reunion. They’re across boroughs in New York City, but form an unlikely spark around their traumas, past and present. Sylvia lives with her daughter, played by Brooke Timber, and not far from a nosy but caring sister, played by Merritt Wever, but is chained to awful memories revolving around her mother, played by “Suspiria” icon Jessica Harper.
