Debuting in 1982, “Cane River” was an independent-film curio: a race and colorism-themed love story with an all-black cast, written and directed by a black filmmaker, financed by wealthy black backers. The filmmaker’s name was Horace B. Jenkins, who spent most of his career working in public television, and died of a heart attack at the age of 42, just a few months after “Cane River” premiered.
Largely financed by the Rhodes family of New Orleans (an African American family that has provided dignified burials for African Americans since the Civil War), “Cane River” was championed by Richard Pryor, but disappeared for decades after Jenkins’ sudden death.
It was mostly unknown until 2013, when an Academy Film Archive team selected the film’s original negative as part of a large group of materials brought from the vault of DuArt Film & Video.
After some preliminary research, including a discussion with the film’s editor Debi Moore,...

File this one under "How the Hell Is This News?" You know, no one understands the allure of a mysterious woman in black more than I do, but people in Winchester, Virginia, are taking this bit of not-so-paranormal catnip to a much higher level.
Winchester residents have come across a mysterious woman dressed in black, known now as "The Woman in Black," walking about their town, and they've gone so far as to track her appearances and even created an official Woman in Black Facebook Sighting Page to keep tabs on her for... well... who knows why.
Even weirder, The Woman in Black's story made the local news.
PIX11 reports that the mysterious woman has been spotted wearing all black and traveling on foot with black luggage through several states, but now police are asking the public to leave her alone.
The woman, identified as 50-year-old Elizabeth Poles, caught...

On July 4th, 2006, Dread Central opened its doors, and for nearly a decade now we've been bringing you constant horror content every day since. No holidays. No days off. We're always here, and we are always happy to do so. So it's with great pride that we wish you, our readers, a happy anniversary!
Being a writer in the web business is not easy. There are so many bumps along the way that it gets hard to remember the smoother patches. One thing that doesn't change, though, is how absolutely worth it it all is.
You guys give us a platform, and we do our best to honor that gift. We've made each other laugh, screamed over our disagreements (complete with Caps Lock On), and have learned so much from one another. Every day that we get to do this is a blessing, and in an industry where so many websites comes and go,...

It's hard to believe seven years have passed since Dread Central opened its doors on July 4th, 2006, declaring our independence from those who were holding us back, but alas... it is so. This past year has been stranger than most, but truth be told, that's how we like it.
Each year I personally take this time to acknowledge staffers past and present so please allow me my usual time to indulge myself. First, our foundation ... The Foywonder, Andrew Kasch, Buz Wallick, Scott Johnson, Mr. Dark, and Nomad. These cats have been here since Day One and helped build this nuthouse brick by brick. I don't care whether they contribute a lot or a little. The simple fact that they've stood by us so long always makes me realize how truly lucky and blessed we are. Gracias for your never-ending loyalty.
A special shout-out to the following DC soldiers that have...

Six years ago Dread Central opened its doors on July 4th, declaring our independence from those who were holding us back, and the lunatics have been running the asylum ever since. The road thus far has been winding and unpredictable, and we wouldn't want it any other way.

Words alone cannot express how lucky we are to have each and every one of you. Your loyalty and support are proof positive it takes more than just blood to become family.

We're pleased to announce that Dread Central is home to the online premiere of one of our favorite indie filmmakers' new short, "Now That You're Dead!" Writer/director Patrick Rea was kind enough to provide DC with access to his latest venture, which he describes as "a dark-humored battle between a cheating husband, a mistress, and a murderous wife with a supernatural twist."
"Now That You're Dead" is a SenoReality / Free State Studios production that was shot in the Lawrence, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, area. The cast includes Jennifer Plas, who also appeared in Rea's debut feature length film, The Empty Acre (review), Meagan Flynn, and Aaron Laue.
Currently Rea is working on getting the balance of funding together for his sophomore feature, Nail Biter, and promises more news on that front shortly. In the meantime, dig on "Now That You're Dead," and keep it here for updates.

How ironic that the first I hear about a new Barbie doll based on Tippi Hedren's character in the classic The Birds comes from gossip site Defamer of all places.
But who cares about the source? This Melanie Daniels doll rocks!
In honor of Hitchcock's film's 45th anniversary, "this incredible collector's doll features our heroine being attacked by a trio of fine feathered foes, just like in the movie." With online prices ranging from about $40-$45, The Birds Barbie is a definite must-have for every fan of the film. Take a look at these features:
Includes real fake birds! High-quality head looks scared and has awesome hair! The Birds is the first movie that ever really scared me as a kid, so you can be sure this Woman has already pre-ordered hers!
